Jalen Williams Proposes a Major Change to the DPOY Award

Our guest this week is Jalen Williams of the Oklahoma City Thunder. The OKC guard talks about all the roles he’s played this year and how crazy it is that Lu Dort has never made an All-Defense team. Finally he proposes a couple rule changes to the All-Defense teams and the Defensive Player of the Year award previously won by a lot of centers like Rudy Gobert or Jaren Jackson Jr.

  1. Man I love this guy.

Glad Young Man and the Three is keeping good content rolling, and J Dub keeps making his appearance.

  2. he'll being asking to change the mvp award if shai doesn't win this year 😂😂😂 bro wants participation awards handed out now

  3. The thing about Lu Dort could be said about Bam Adebayo and Anthony Davis too. JDub was just naming past DPOYs and with Rudy and JJJ he also mentioned Bam who's never won it. His point is fair, but people (media, fans and players) do not care as much about defensive stats and the fact that he makes about defensive players being taken for granted to then mention Bam as a DPOY just shows that he took that for granted, which is kinda contradictory

  4. Stop taking in account rebounds problem fixed
Should be Blocks , Steals, Pnr defense and shot contest percentage

  5. It is difficult to judge how good a defensive player is especially when defensive duties vary by position. When awarding an offensive player you can just look at points, assists and to some extent team wins. But a player like Anthony Davis who literally anchors his team defensively, never comes up in these DPOY conversations. Bam has never won the DPOY (although him and the Heat are having a down year this season, but he has 'deserved' it in the past). Jrue Holiday is arguably the best guard defender in the league and has been for the past decade, yet he has non DPOYs whereas Marcus Smart does (not saying Smart did not deserve it the year he won it but if you were to pick a defender out of the 2 you would pick Jrue, especially when you factor in longevity and impact to winning).
Last few years the voters just been looking at the team and individual defensive ratings and that determined the winner. This year is probably going to be Wemby because of the narrative. I do wish they figure out how improve the way a DPOY is selected, but I do not know how they will do that. Finally Marc Gasol won a DPOY and made second team All NBA, that should have gone to LeBron!

  6. The thing is defense can’t be measured solely on steals and blocks
There’s being in help, rotationing, denying the ball, taking charges +more
It doesn’t show up in the stat sheets

  7. I think they should divide the DPOY into 2 teams of 5 players each that incorporate frontcourt and backcourt position

  8. Isn't it natural that DPOY goes to the best defensive center? It's like in football, if DPOY was a thing, the best Center Back would win it although defensive midfielders also play defense. Rim protection has the biggest impact in defense. When you see Wemby in the paint, you think twice or thrice to take the shot and you eventually change your "ideal" shot. I respect JDub a lot and he's really a great defender but his impact in defense can't be as much as Wemby's. I think only generational defensive guards should be considered better than the best rim protectors. It's not about block numbers. Good rim protectors affect how the offense against them operates.

  9. good idea but what should we do to players like draymond? or AD? players who can protect the rim but also excel on the perimeter, and you cant say well only players less than a certain height can get it cause that just becomes to specific.

  10. Brilliant. Wholeheartedly agree. The awards are outdated. We want a progressive Association, which means honoring history but being intentional about the future. J-Dub makes a sound argument and, no disrespect to @YOUNGMANANDTHREE , but there is a great deal discontent with awards (e.g., there is no OPOY, MVP is effectively OPOY but more of this weird popularity contest crossed with some wild subjectiveness of comparing MVP candidates to previous winners) and I think we do need to rethink them. Personally, I would like some sort of objective measures for some awards and some with a formula of objective measures and subjective opinions that aren't captured by the metrics.

But, J-Dub's first proposal of a third D-team is not radical whatsoever and takes little-to-no effort on the Association's part to implement. Let's do it! The interior & perimeter awards might be a bit more difficult, but I 100% like the thinking behind it and think it's a great way to start thinking about making the awards more meaningful. It really resonated with me when he argued that the big w/the most blocks gets it every year: I really dislike this, as it doesn't capture what we want out of the DPOY award. Thanks J-Dub!!!

  11. IMO I disagree with the 2x DPoY awards – if going down the big/small or interior/perimeter this belittles the big role as there is less contenders (2 positions vs 3) and how do you define big (small ball 4s?).

    All-Def 3 – absolutely.
I would also add in All [Most] Improved, and All Sixth Man/Reserve.

I would also suggest that voters have to have their selections/votes plus honorable mentions for all awards made public (could be to their name or anonymous?)
HOWEVER they must also give reasoning for all of the selections including why they picked A over B etc.

I also think the players salary should be split into at least two components – a base salary (counts toward team salary cap) and an NBA paid component that is paid to award winners/players selected for All teams (does not count toward team salary caps and is ONLY paid in the year a player win/is selected).

The additional teams Most Improved; 6th Man/Reserve plus three offensive and defensive teams, 2 rookies, provide reasonable incentive across a broad range of players.

Stop paying players for an All-NBA selection up to 7 years after the fact.

  12. Jrue is a perfect example of a guard who has never been close to winning DPOY but guys like Dame, KD consider him the best perimeter defender in the league
