this is a win for the fans and, more importantly, the city. Josh Harris and so many other owners don’t care about the community who patron their teams, instead looking at them like business ventures. While this move is still 100% beneficial to Harris, it will not displace thousands of Philadelphians for the prospect of increased revenue.
This will never happen because the leagues and owners have too much to lose, but there should be two requirements for sports owners: 1. An owner should not be allowed to own franchises in multiple cities where there is competition (i.e. Josh Harris owning the Commanders and Sixers while the Eagles and Wizards exist). 2. Owners should have to be residents of the surrounding area and liable for any tax increases that they may propose to fund a stadium.
This arena was a terrible idea from every angle. It would displace people and businesses and a unique culture, create bottleneck traffic, over burden public transit, hurt established infrastructure and business already in the South Philly sports complex area by leaving. It was just dumb and this change is the right thing for the city and the team.
