This detailed film breakdown & scouting report explores the defense of Amen Thompson and Tari Eason for the Houston Rockets elite defense. Specifically, the way they work as a tandem to pressure the ball, (over) help in the paint and force turnovers to discombobulate opposing offenses.

  1. Honestly its the first time Ive ever seen a 'No-Look Steal'. Im very impressed that they are THIS GOOD at their current ages. Hopefully injuries and off coirt stuff doesnt stop them in the future.

  2. Bout time somebody showing these two some love. Neither one of them are averaging 30 mins played a game. Imagine what rebounding, steals and block numbers they would put up.

  3. Had the pleasure of watching Amen play live against the Nuggets last week. He’s easily a top 5 athlete in the NBA at this point. Covers so much ground in so little time. Desperately needed on a team that doesn’t have a true rim protecting center.

  4. Thanks to share this analysis about a team no one barely talk about ! This show us the ingredients of the Rockets succes and team identity this year. Super cool !

  5. A small oversight – Ausar is technically "a touch bigger" than Amen, which is backed up by the NBA combine anthro measurements. Detroit is one of the few teams still submitting barefoot measurements to the NBA. Houston is not.

  6. If you can find full game footage, the Lindsey Hunter/Mike James combo for Detroit in the 1st round of the 2004 playoffs against Milwaukee would be a fun video like this. I don't think I've ever seen another pair of backups just destroy the other team's confidence through forcing turnovers.

  7. Love these. Dyson Daniels next? I'd love to see the breakdown on how he's managing to average a full steal more than anyone else in the league.

  8. I know its not nba but would you ever consider doing film on overseas hoops? A guy in Australia is on a historical offensive tear and has had four 40 point games and a 59 piece – Bryce Cotton.

  9. Houston is just the defense capital of the world lol. Houston Rockets, Houston MBB, and The Texans are all elite on defense.

  10. Ok im 1:30 in and u noticed that this dude has INSANE hip mobility. Amen rotates and dips his hips so quickly with amazing mechanics. This reduces his foot movement so that he can plant, pivot, and explode which is how he recovers so friggen fast

Dude looks like an elite cornerback on the NBA court

  11. Need an all defense team with Dort, Thompson twins, Mobley and wemby. Idk who else to put at point but Dort just the best guard defender.

  12. Between Houston and OKC, it seems like the new meta for defence is athletic guards/wings who can guard 1-4. You don't even need an elite rim protector with those.

  13. When explosive athleticism meets iq and creativity, This is what u get. It’s like a mix of pippen, Payton, and jordan’s gifts one defense all at once. The athleticism. The versatility. The timing. The agility. The motor and effort. The risk taking and the fundamentals.

  14. that extra tiny step pointed out looks like the run up volleyball players use to maximize jump power

  15. Getting the occasional fighting game reference is always such a treat. The Hundred Hand Honda Slaps also made me think Amen’s blocks are a bit of a shoryuken reversal in a way. 😁

Thinking Basketball videos(and the pod) often end up being one of the most enjoyable highlights of the week. Still reeling from just how much fun it was to hear the dive into the Grizzlies offense. Such thoughtful analysis and inspection to detail, while being charming and down-to-earth, it’s just, mwah. Chefs kiss! 👌

  16. Both Thompson Twins remind me of Ron Artest now called Meta World Peace…… Eason reminds me of Tayshawn Prince…… Nothing New Under the Sun…..

  17. that's Warriors basketball for you, just long stretches where their offense goes back to the stone age
