What Pacers Paris trip reveals + should Jarace Walker actually lose minutes with Aaron Nesmith back?

The Indiana Pacers are back from Paris – what did the trip reveal about the team and the next portion of their season? Plus, should Jarace Walker (or someone else) lose minutes now that Aaron Nesmith is back? Host Tony East is joined by Jon Washburn — formerly of 8 Points, Second and The Fieldhouse — to break it all down.

  2. Tony you are much higher then most people I think on Shep. Everyone loves Shep but he is very 1 dimensional, he provides defense and his 3pt shooting isn't consistent enough to really call him a 3 & D. Jerace on the other hand you see much more with passing and steals which you don't get from Shep. Jerace has also made some incredible entry passes into the post that I have never seen from Shep. Shep seems more like a hand the ball to someone else to make a action and maybe he is the recipient of the action and gets a shot. I think Jerace is already better than Shep and he still have room to grow, where I think Sheps only real growth will be with being more consistent shooting wise.

  3. Ben Sheppard and Tony East would definitely be besties.Shep and Tony really half brothers same mom different dad

  4. Yeah shep as a 3 and D is not entirely accurate. Career 33% from 3. Less than 40% fg percentage as a whole. Walker I think has proven he’s the better shooter of the two. Shep might have a slight edge on defense. But Walker is better rebounder and passer. And can create for himself. We need Walker out there to develop because his development along with mathurin will determine whether or not we have a shot at a championship in the near future.

  5. Sorry, it's still Mathurin. He has the length, and has the ability to attack a mismatch.
Since he's proven to be a winning starter, you start him. The team's ceiling isn't going to be determined by 3 and D players.
Furthermore, Nesmith is the better defensive player but Mathurin fits the defense better. He's a much better rebounder and longer to disrupt passing lanes in the press.

  6. 31:38 I'll say this about the Mathurin situation whole career thing with Pacers as 6th man, from Mathurin"s Interviews he's stated he wants to be great and become an all-star….allstars don't sit on the bench and when its happened its very rare, he's really a SG but has shown the improvements to bring great effort on defense for it to not matter at SF but I would predict whenever Siakam leaves or there is a different strategy from coaching on two point guard lineups compared to another scorer like Benn in backcourt, and maybe having a point forward or whether its a new coach in the future or etc, many decisions that could determine his future…IF he is continuously getting better overall but lets say he's on the bench and/or not much change for him to shine going into next year or 2 I believe from his mentality he'll want out, UNLESS his mindset changes and is okay with the sixth man long term but idk I just feel that isn't the case because when lineup conversations were brought up in preseason practice interviews he sounded hesitant and deflecting from my perspective when talking about being on the bench and accepting it due to the playoff run conversation (even though I don't give that run a lot of weight due to playing teams without key star players…yes close games against Boston but would we have even got to Boston if Bucks and Knicks were fully healthy even if Mathurin was included?) but considering there has been a great balance in offense and defensive rating overall in the past 15 or so games Mathurin deserves the spot in my opinion

  7. Pacers need to move on fromTurner…really like when TB is in there…he plays his a…off! Turner not worth the $. TRADE him please!!!!

  8. Ben and Aaron have that real intangible factor!!! You know what you are getting and they both go after it!!! Jon spot on about most things…except his take on Walker….not a fan!

  9. Tony I get the long term phrase when it comes to Jarace compared to Shep win now but a strong case could be had that Jarace brings both to the table win now and long term, yes shep is more trusted but when thinking about players like what Jon said such as OG, Tatum, Brown, Cade, Paolo, etc 6'7 or taller with bulk skilled players, u need size sometimes to deflect shots have more wingspan to contest, be strong enough to take a hit to the chest or moved out the way and all those things I named Shep can't do better than Walker, hell we seen what Stephon Castle did to him, while Jarace isn't perfect I think he needs to be more prioritized because his abilities at his best can be more impactful in stopping runs or making runs that could change the chance of winning a game in the playoffs or any game compared losing (Unless Shep is hot from deep…in which is rare to see), with fluid convos coming from Rick I think it shouldn't be hard to take Jarace out when its too many mistakes and put Shep or someone else like Nesmith, etc in and somewhat have the same teaching moments like he's had with Mathurin

  10. Shep has been a swiss army knife for the team. The fact that his shots arent falling now dont change that.

  11. Hard disagree on Mathurin. He needs to keep starting. He’s a much bigger threat offensively and he’s been great defensively lately. And the “long term, he’ll be sixth man” take isn’t true, because he won’t stay with us if he’s gonna be sixth man. And he shouldn’t. He’s done everything he’s been asked and then some, and if you go by the metrics, our starting 5 is one of the very best in the whole league. If he gets rewarded for all of this by getting put back on the bench, he shouldn’t wanna be here anymore.

  12. I would love to see an alternative option regarding rotations.

    Tyrese
    Andrew
    Benn
    Pascal
    Myles

    TJ
    Ben
    Aaron
    Obi
    Jarace

Thomas has been awesome, but his contribution could be replicated. The switch-ability would be great with Jarace. The rim presence and rebounding changes, but the speed and play-making would be fantastic.

  13. Regarding the Paris trip, I think a lot of people are underestimating how special this was for the team. That’s something you really can’t take away from these players ever that they got to go to Paris as a team together and have this camaraderie in this moment that’s very special and that NBA basketball specifically playing for the patients allowed that to happen. Yes it might be disrupted for a little while and your biological clock, but the vibes are feeling very good players feel very special for a small market team to give an opportunity to these players to do that it’s a notch in our and every current players belt.
