Are De’Aaron Fox and the Sacramento Kings headed for a messy breakup?

Are De’Aaron Fox and the Sacramento Kings headed for a messy breakup?

Fox 40’s Sean Cunningham, Brenden Nunes from the Kings Pulse Podcast and The Kings Beat’s James Ham join forces for coverage of the Sacramento Kings.

Topics include a wild day in Sacramento as De’Aaron Fox’s future with the team became murky. Can the Kings save the marriage between the franchise and it’s best player? Who is to blame for the situation unraveling? There is plenty to discuss as the Kings are thrown into chaos days before the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline.

Thanks for joining us on this adventure! Big shoutout to Paul Jinkerson (@paulitition) for creating a new intro and outro for the podcast and to Brenden for creating our new overlay for the podcast.

  1. If it’s Houston? I want Sengun. That might be a lot. But that’s what I want. Amir Thompson would be nice as well….

  2. No way Houston gives up that much
It’d be either green and picks or Jabari and picks
We’re not getting both of them

  3. The Kings need to upgrade their length, but what wing could they get that's going to start over DeRozan or Keegs? A backup 4 won't move the needle. Maybe they could trade Fox for some yet-unkown marquee wing that could allow us to bring DeRozan off the bench and save him for the playoffs. I think that would actually make us better, even if we had to lose Fox in the process.

  4. The Kings don't control their pick in a stacked draft if they make the play-in. Is making the play-in or first round only to get bounced or swept out is worth losing a lottery pick in a stacked draft?!? This is why the Kings and the Bulls are stuck in purgatory… and will continue to be.

  5. Castle, Vassell, and Sochan ?!?!?! 😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣. It's Fox not Giannis! Oh man does Ham ham it up!!! Pop and R.C. would rather BURN the house down then do that deal and THEY WON'T because that's what dumb franchises do. The Spurs base LOVES Castle, and many think he has a chance to be a lot better than Fox is now, certainly on the defensive side, you know, the one that actually wins games in the playoffs. Certainly Castle already has more in his trophy case at this stage of his career than Fox ever did. The sort of trade Ham is proposing is what the Kings would do, the sort of personnel moves that got them into this mess in the first place. Yikes. Delusional much? Vassell and picks — at best! Either that or satisfy yourselves with whatever package of Tari Eason and Reed Sheppard you get this summer from Houston. Zach LaVine — good luck winning games with that. Kings gotta King…

  6. I understand gauging fox’s value and going to his people directly so they aren’t blindsided but this was just bad timing. The team has been playing well under Doug, the vibes are back, and guys are locked in but now this just adds avoidable adversity. Unless the kings got a godfather offer for fox and could not pass on it—which does not appear to be the case, then it’s just incompetence at the top

  7. News Flash: Rich Paul will propagate an image that he is looking out for both sides, but I feel the real truth is the majority of his mindset, is about getting the best chance for his client to be happy and get him a supermax deal in the next few years so he can cash in with his commission! He is not very interested in helping the Kings get a win – win out of the deal.

  8. Someone should ask Fox if he thinks whatever team he wants to go to will have a better chance of winning than the Kings after giving up a lot young star talent to get him!

  9. If trading Fox is handled properly, the Kings can actually be a better team by acquiring multiple young players with star potential and getting the needed size and balancing this roster. By trading Fox, the chance of giving up the rest of the core is diminished.

  10. Monte is desperate right now because he knows he is gone this summer if he does not hit a home run before the Feb 6 deadline! As he should be, but that is dangerous…they need to get a haul for him if they pull the trigger!

  11. There's only one reason why Fox and his agent wants out, that is under Christie's sets he is relegated to a role player and as such he won't be able to showcase enough to get a max/supermax money.

  12. The only caveat in terms of the Kings getting max value is if Fox plays hard ball and states he will only sign an extension with the Spurs!

  13. People are talking about pleasing Rich Paul and Fox, like it is already done, talking about a trade to the Spurs. l say F&%K that! When the rockets call, ask for Jalen Green, Cam Whitmore and Jabari Smith and 2 first round picks! Tell them you are a friend of Danny Ainge! lol … I say start the bidding war and be hard nose about it!

  14. If trading Fox is handled properly, the Kings can actually be a better team by acquiring multiple young players with star potential and getting the needed size and balancing this roster. By trading Fox, the chance of giving up the rest of the core is diminished.

  15. I need vegas to get a team….I am so tired of being a kings fan…we should have kept Halibhrton

  16. At around the 18:00 minute mark, Sean and James discuss the Kings organization bringing/attempting to bring in "help" for Fox.

While I do understand that there were missteps and missed opportunities by the Kings organization, can we also not play Devil's advocate and count all of the help Fox really did receive?

Firstly, Kings traded for, then successfully managed to extend, one of the BEST centers in the NBA in Domantas Sabonis.

Secondly, the Kings signed, and successfully extended, Fox's close friend and dynamic scorer/playmaker Malik Monk. The Kings then also found a diamond in the rough in Keon Ellis, a solid defender and 3pt shooter that the team sorely needs. Keegan Murray was also drafted, who, despite not developing as quickly as we as fans had hoped, has still been a fantastic positive for the Kings with his defense and (albeit streaky) scoring.

The Kings also managed to extend Mlike Brown, prior to firing him, to help provide the consistency that Fox pleaded for from the organization. And lastly, the Kings ALSO attracted and signed future hall of famer and multi time all star Demar DeRozan.

Listen, I know the Kings roster has its weaknesses, but to say that the organization has been "attempting to help" and for Fox to go out and publicly say he wants help, despite him being surrounded by all that he has, seems a bit backwards. If Fox is the supermax guy that he wants to be, one would think he'd be able to string together more success with the team, especially if he's the guy, right? A supermax guy could likely look at the Kings for all their strengths and say, "I can work with this" and not "I still need more help"

  17. I think the trade talk is to test the waters and hear the offers so we know what may or may not be possible going forward. You trade in the off season when you know the value of the draft pick(s) if you can. Let the season playout. If you are going to trade Fox then getting to the postseason and showing you can compete in the postseason would be more profitable for both parties.

  18. I love Fox but I'm sick of the podcasts and drama and being held hostage by LeBron's agent. If Fox wants to go, let him go.
