Gafford should come off the bench because he is the more aggressive scorer and feasts against backup squads. Lively also the better overall defender.

Mavs have a bitt of a Gafford dilema. Can thery afford his next contract if he is a back up . I wonder what kind of offers Nico got for him.

Mavericks are slowly getting healthy, Dante Exum is now doubtful so he will be back soon and I think luka returns in February

Gafford comes off the bench because Lively is foul-trouble prone. But Lively has been an insane defender in some clutch moments, but Gafford deserves his flowers. He's been playing insane lately.
It doesn't matter but Gafford should be the starter no doubt. Lively is great but Gafford is just a Vet but on the other hand you can't go wrong if you swap em out that's why they're the Twin Towers!
Regarding your question about whether Lively or Gafford should start when Lively returns, it depends on when Lively actually returns, if he actually returns this season. Since he probably won’t return before the playoffs, I would expect Gafford to start most of the playoff games even if Lively is available, if the team even makes it to the playoffs. At the pace they’re on now, half the team might be hospitalized or dead before the season ends.
The Mavericks were in 4th place at 19-10 before the Christmas day game when they lost Luka to a calf strain. They are 7-12 since Luka’s been out. The team has also been without multiple other guys for stretches since Xmas. Luckily for them, the rest of the West hasn’t run off and left them. They’re currently only 1.5 games out of 5th and 2.5 games out of 4th. While Lively and Kleber are likely out for the rest of the regular season and perhaps even the playoffs, hopefully Luka will be back around the All-Star break, and Dante Exum is close to returning from his offseason wrist surgery. If they can manage to stay within 2 or 3 games of 5th until Luka returns, I like their chances to finish the season relatively strong and finish in the top 5, barring any additional major injuries.
DLive is the better all around defensive player as he is switchable on the perimiter to some extent and he coordinates the defensive plays much like Dorian Finney Smith used to do. DGaff is a more dominating inside pressence and more polished offensively. Neither of them have too much of a disadvantage over the other. It just depends on what the Mavs need situationally. I believe DLive will remain first choice in closing games though because of the defensive team play and basketball IQ.
Unfortunately Lively is going to be out another couple months most likely but when he's back I think he should start. Not even because he's necessarily better but because Gafford absolutely feasts on 2nd units which is a big reason why the team has been so good when fully healthy. The 1-2 punch of Lively's lob chemistry with Luka and Gafford dominating the opposing team's bench units was really nice at the start of the season

Lively probably won’t be back during the regular season, so Gaff will 100% be the starter if they make the playoffs.

Every since Gafford thought he was going to be traded he's really stepped up his game. This Gafford does more than Lively. But Lively is a better passer in the short roll and pick and roll.

Nah we saw why Dlive is better last year when it mattered in the playoffs. We couldn’t even play gaff against Boston which is why lively always closed the games
I really hope dlive develops to be an average shooter if so I believe they could potentially play together at that point but until that happens I’d say we keep gaff starting while he’s in rhythm and probably dlive back to starting next season
Lively is much more impactful with Luka. And gafford for some reason wasn’t as good in the advanced stats… especially defensively for some reason which is why lively was starting before he got hurt.
technically the Kyrie, Luka, Klay, PJ and Lively lineup is the best statistically. they're 6-1 with that lineup which is the best. but they have barely all played together this year with ALL the INJURIES.
Luka is coming back. Lively… gonna be rough. They also lost Kleber for the year most likely. So they have 1 center and 1 PF in the roster right now, tough without trades

I think the which centre starts question should always be match up based to see what type of centre gives them grief because derrick is long and quick for his size letting him defend most positions at a ok level but struggles against strong more traditional match ups and lets gafford switch in both are incredible and I wouldnt be mad at either starting
Let gaff start. I think lively plays just as hard off the bench. Gaff plays better when he starts. I think it means more to him.
And the gap between their short roll passing is much smaller than it used to be. Gaff has been making those reads correctly and moving the ball.
