BREAKING NEWS: Cleveland Cavaliers trade for De’Andre Hunter

Welcome to Cleveland, De’Andre Hunter.

Koby Altman pulled off a trade that sends Caris Levert, Georges Niang and a plethora of 2nd round picks to the Atlanta Hawks for De’Andre Hunter.

The NBA Trade deadline has come & gone and now it’s time to reevaluate where the Cleveland Cavaliers stack up against the rest of the NBA.

Did Koby Atlman make the right decision or should he have gone in another direction at the NBA’s trade deadline?

Only time will tell for sure, but let’s spend a few minutes breaking down what happened and why or why not it puts the Cavs in the best position moving forward.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have remained quiet with the NBA trade deadline approaching, and it is very possible that they will end up passing on adding a big name.

That would be just fine, considering that the Cavaliers own the best record in basketball and have looked fantastic with their current setup.

But here’s the problem: Cleveland is currently a shade over the luxury tax, and it could result in some big penalties within a couple of years.

Now, if the Cavs shed some money to get under the tax, it would pay major dividends financially. Of course, that means the Cavaliers would have to cut payroll now, which could mean actually making some frustrating moves before Feb. 6.

Jason Lloyd of The Athletic not only feels this is a possibility, but thinks it would be the correct avenue for Cleveland to pursue.

“The players are smart. If the Cavs start shedding money before Thursday, they will know why. It isn’t a great message to send to a team trying to compete for a championship now,” Lloyd wrote. “Nevertheless, I still believe it’s absolutely the right move to make. The reality is the owners made a terrible deal in the latest collective bargaining agreement. The restrictions on second-apron teams and repeat-offender status are so crippling now that it punishes teams like the Boston Celtics and, eventually, the Cavs and the Oklahoma City Thunder.”

Lloyd goes as far to say the the Cavaliers’ current financial situation is “untenable” long term, meaning that Cleveland will have to start trimming the fat at some point to avoid a massive bill.

It obviously won’t be anyone’s favorite solution, but this strategy may be the most sensible path forward for the Cavs.

  1. Absolutely love this deal for the Cavs. Not only got the guy they needed but took him from a team they may play in the first round.

  2. Seeing as Hunter is Tye Jerome's best friend and played with him in College, i would bring him off the bench to play with someone he already has some chemistry with.

  3. I dont know warriors first championship depth was insane. Barbosa, Livingston, Lee, Speights and so on

  4. The Cav's should find a way to bring Niang back into the franchise. I suspect he will have future success in basketball in whatever he chooses. I met him at a meet and greet, and he just seems to be a good guy.

  5. I like this lineup for about 12-15 minutes a game- Mitchell, struss, hunter, wade and Mobley. You have 4 shooters, 2 rebounders, 1 creator and decent size(pause) all around .

  6. Really good trade, also Deandre was a champion in college, that is good experience know one talks about. Him and Ty Jerome were teammates.

  7. Cleeeevvvvelannddddd this is for you! This as the perfect guy to add and we didn’t have to give up anything useful. Get to move strus wade and okoro down a spot just makes us even deeper love it

  8. Can’t believe Koby did it
I’ve been saying this for months now

Hunter is the perfect fit for them aside from Herb Jones.

  9. Trading Georges is a mistake. Cavs need big men and who they have aren't that good. Mobley will get push around in the playoffs due to his frail size. Wade is a joke. Who else do they have at power forward?!?!

  10. There are also two 1st round pick swaps involved but it just means we get the least favorable of Utah, Atlanta and the Cavs so basically we don’t swap cuz we’ll be better than both teams.

But I too hope Niang gets bought out and comes back

  11. This might sound crazy but I think if Ty Jerome were given starter minutes consistently he'd be an all star. I get Luka vibes from him.

  12. I'm not an NBA expert, but if Ben Simmons Is cut could he be added as a defensive force off the bench? I know his offensive game is non existent but at one point he was a great defensive player.
