Not a bad trade. There was no space for Laravia in the rotation anymore & Smart played like 30 total games for us in two seasons. We see what we have with our team this season & the rotation we have (which has put us 2nd in the West without Smart all season). We compete & hopefully make a deep playoff run. Resign JJJ to a Supermax in the summer & go all in to win if we don’t meet our playoff standard this offseason. JJJ will still be on the final year of his deal next year ($23 million) which will give us some flexibility to go for a win now move next season. I like the trade, we needed to get off of Smart’s salary since has hasn’t had the opportunity to really play for us due to all the injuries the past two seasons.
The Grizzlies have not paid the luxury tax since the ‘05-‘06 season. They are not going to start now. Other teams want Memphis to overpay. It’s not going to happen.
No big name player wants to be traded to Memphis. We are NOT a destination city for whatever reason.
Unless something happens that has not been accomplished before, win the Ship by developing from inside only, we will be a very good regular season team and once in a while, if things break right make it to the conference finals.
That’s the reality served cold. Sometimes the truth hurts.
This likely allows Memphis to sign Santi in addition to JJJ and maybe even keep kennard if they want. It seems like a plan to double down on themselves/

A lot of talent & well known players will be free agents this upcoming offseason. We rarely got to see Marcus play & Jake, as good of a season he is having, would be out of the rotation.
Marcus smart and Jake Laravia are not the reason why we’re 2nd in the West n they would not be the reason we go to the finals so get rid of em deadweight
