Trading prime 25yo Luka for post prime AD is like trading prime 25yo Larry Bird for post prime Bill Walton. Makes absolutely no sense unless it was forced by Adam Silver to save the League as a whole in the ratings. The Mavs got robbed with the biggest heist any team has ever been robbed with. Luka is second all time playoff performer only slightly behind Jordan ! We are talking about a GOAT level player everybody knows that. Only Nico is gaslighting everyone that somehow his thinking makes sense thats utter nonsense this is obviously a higher level trade.

They had a Top 3 Defense with DJJ(head of the snake).
Nico didn't say Defense Wins when he let him walk. He in fact said he was a (Offensive only) Klay Away from beating the Celtics.
Why would you low ball your top Defensive player who helped you get a top defense and yeah he got klay but we (any with sense) knew that Klay needed to be a 6th microwave man and that we were fine on D with those 3 guys behind Luka and KY.
Replacing DJJ with a Offensive only Guard with those other two sub/avg defending guards was the very key to having a Defense with a gaping hole.
In fact front court wasn't a defensive problem(4/5). Max does help them now with guards. but they had a top 3 defense last year and couldn't do it. They needed to fill in a few holes and keep that Defense and of course keep the guy that is gonna get you 30 (and more if healthy) every game in the playoffs. If anything you trade Ky away and get a better two way guard.
But I think they would have been absolutely fine if Nico didn't go cheap on DJJ and that really didn't stop all those other moves they made. Add Naji(too big to be a POA defender but a good defensive forward that adds to a great defense) Klay as the Microwave and a back up line up wth Grimes as the 2 is a incredible Defense. He's not perfect but he was like a more decisive Josh Green that Nico gave 12.5 too.
I think they had it in the palm of their hands. Now they are gonna try to win with Defense in a Now Offensive League.
It's not really worth wasting my time to wait and see a future that should already be known.

The Owner wants a TEAM, not individually great players. Luka is lazy. He doesn't play defense. The reason he has energy to score is because he only plays one half of the court. The owner is right to say that Luka does not contribute to team culture the way so that a Championship team can develop. Comments that "the fans don't like it" and things like this are dumb statements. The fans don't know what happens within the team. The owner is the owner, and fans do not coach or manage the Mavs. The team will be fine once everyone gets used to playing together.
