BYU Basketball is Now the BEST Team in Big 12 As We Approach March Madness, But Aside From Houston?

BYU Basketball is Now the BEST Team in Big 12 As We Approach March Madness, But Aside From Houston?

BYU basketball’s resurgence this season has been a breath of fresh air for Cougar fans. While they’ve had good moments in recent years, this season feels different, with a blend of talent, coaching, and a bit of “something special” propelling them forward. Here’s a breakdown of what’s fueling their strong performance:

Balanced Attack: This year’s team isn’t relying on just one or two players. They have a balanced scoring attack, with multiple players contributing consistently. This makes them harder to defend and less predictable for opponents. Different players step up on different nights, making them a tough scout.

Defensive Intensity: BYU has shown a renewed commitment to defense. They’re playing with more intensity and focus on that end of the floor, disrupting opponents’ rhythm and forcing turnovers. Their defensive effort has been a key factor in their wins.

Strong Guard Play: Their guards have been excellent, controlling the tempo, making smart decisions, and hitting clutch shots. Good guard play is essential for any successful team, and BYU’s guards have been a real strength.

Coaching and Chemistry: The coaching staff has done a great job of developing the players and fostering a strong team chemistry. The players seem to be playing with confidence and trust in each other, which is translating into success on the court. They look like they are having fun and playing for each other.

Home-Court Advantage: The Marriott Center has been rocking this year. The energy from the home crowd has given the Cougars a boost, making it a tough place for opponents to play. The home-court advantage has definitely played a role in their success.

Resilience: They’ve shown resilience in close games, finding ways to win even when things aren’t going their way. This toughness and ability to close out games is a sign of a mature and confident team.

Big 12 Proving Ground: The Big 12 is a tough conference, and BYU is proving they belong. Their performance against quality competition has validated their strong start and shown they can compete with the best.

  1. BYU is having possibly its best season ever, and certainly peaking at the right time, but saying they’re currently the best in the league is some top tier clickbait

  2. No, Houston is. BYU is awesome, and when they are clicking can hang with almost anyone, especially at home. Nobody would feel relieved to draw BYU in a tournament, but Houston is still the best in the league. Signed, big-time BYU fan.

  3. BYU fan here, I say no way. UH is best, Iowa state also better. even AZ is up there with BYU despite byu beating them once.
byu has always been "dangerous' sometimes when they are hot they are unbeatable. but those days are hit and miss. but over all they seem to be getting better.. hopefully.

  4. While I agree that BYU had their best week in the past 50 years, I totally disagree with the assertion as "most dangerous." Houston is far and away the most dangerous. Iowa State, Texas Tech, and Arizona are noticeably better than BYU. However, BYU has closed the gap and are likely the team no one would want to play in a conference tournament.

  5. I bleed blue……They are not the best team in the Big12….they seam to be peeking……If they win out, they are looking good to probably be seated high in the NCAA Tourney which would give them a good chance to go the sweet 16. You live by the 3 – you die by the 3. They have to keep their shooting confidence up but that is hard to do. Look at the first Utah matchup when they went ice cold. You have to bring the defense in the Tourney or YOU LOSE!

  6. This level of optimism about BYU makes me really nervous. I love it, but I am bracing for heartbreaking letdown. I prefer the role of disrespected underdog.

  7. Okay ISU guy — PLEASE do us Cougars a favor & cool us off next week! Please. 😉 Can't wait for that match. You guys are great & I wish we coulda had a home-n-home with ya.

  8. BYU had some teams way back in the day (when the NIT was the premier post season tourney) that had better success, but this team is the most talented since the 1980s. Those 1980s teams had Danny Ainge, Fred Roberts, Greg Kite (all of which played for those dynasty Celtics teams).

  9. As a BYU fan, I have been fascinated by Drake's bromance with BYU! 😂 Midway through conference play I thought that Texas Tech had a chance to overtake Houston for the top team but Houston has proven to be the best team, especially amidst a slide by TTech. But, the second best team is certainly wide open among Texas Tech, Arizona, Iowa State and BYU. BYU has the most momentum, though. Still lots of good basketball left!

  10. Houston is the best and are head and shoulders better than everyone else. BYU is playing great ball now, the Houston game made BYU learn how to play against very physical teams. So now they will compete against Houston…but still lose by 12 pnts.

  11. 😂😂 One win against the top 5 teams in the conference and you are considered them the most dangerous team in the XII. Ridiculous!!! 😂😂😂

  12. BYU relies a lot on the three. As long as we're hitting threes, we're dangerous. If the threes fail us, I don't know if we have a sufficient inside game to compensate. But, as a team, they are growing and gelling together.

  13. BYU grad here. We're certainly on a role. But the correct answer is Houston. They decimated us. Only game this season that I turned off at halftime. But I do feel great about our shoet and longterm trajectory.
