Bill was truly one of one. His kindness was unmatched and his positivity would spread to those around him.

one of my best friends grew up with a speech impediment. in elementary school he went to see bill walton at a book signing in la center, washington. coincidentally, bill spoke about how he, too, grew up with a speech impediment, which continued into young adulthood. bill said it made it hard to have confidence in himself, until he saw a speech therapist and started working toward improvement. well when my friend and his mom met bill for an autograph in la center, bill offered him personal words of encouragement. and that was what caused my friend to start seeing a speech therapist. today you would never know he ever struggled with it.
my father and i met bill walton at a book signing at powell's during the 2015-16 season. i asked him, "bill, how would your blazers have done against today's golden state warriors?" he said, "we'd take care of 'em." he made a huge long ranting chat with us, even though we were total strangers to him, and he went out of his way to highlight the relationship he recognized between me and my father. "happy father's day," he said (it was not father's day).
