Rebuilding the Dream: The Next Era of Houston Rockets Basketball – Episode 21
After an uninspiring home loss to the Brooklyn Nets, the Rockets began another 4 game road trip. As they prepared to face the New York Knicks in the world’s most famous arena, trade rumours were reaching a crescendo as the deadline for moving players was just 3 days away. Luka Doncic’s unexpected move from Dallas to LA had the basketball world wondering who would be the next big name star on the move.
Just 2 days before the 2025 NBA Trade Deadline the Houston Rockets played the Nets in Brooklyn after suffering their worst loss of the season to them over the past weekend in Houston. The trade deadline passed and the Houston Rockets stood pat. The franchise decided to wait and see what the young core were able to do this season despite some speculation that they could maximize their competitive edge by adding a go-to clutch-time scorer. After 4 straight losses, Ime Udoka was hoping his team could right the ship against Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves. For 3 and a half quarters the game was tightly contested but with just 5 minutes remaining the Rockets offense went cold. Cam Whitmore’s 3 pointer with 3 minutes remaining was the only field goal Houston would make during the games final stretch as Anthony Edwards powered the Timberwolves to a 13 point victory. The Rockets would head back to Texas, making one final stop in Dallas to close out the road trip. The Mavericks were looking to showcase the new face of their franchise, Anthony Davis, who they had acquired from the Lakers in the Luka Doncic trade.
He had a strong start to his first game as a Maverick and gave his new team the early advantage by outmuscling Houston’s defence, putting up 14 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists in the game’s first 12 minutes. Dallas maintained their lead going into the 2nd half but Ime Udoka, tired of seeing his team getting pushed around, began the 3rd with a double big line-up of Steven Adams and Alperen Sengun. The strategy appeared to be working as the Rockets slowly clawed their way back into the game. With 2 minutes left before the final quarter, Alperen Sengun drove to the rim and slammed down a ferocious dunk. Anthony Davis was clearly hurt after the play despite not getting any contact and would have to come out of the game. His dominant performance was brought to a premature end and reports following the game suggested he could be out for over a month.
The Rockets continued to push for the lead and got to within 4 with less than 3 minutes remaining but the Mavericks held the Rockets at bay to earn the win. It would do little to lift the spirits of fans who now faced the prospect of praying for Anthony Davis to remain healthy rather than cheering on a once in a generation talent in Luka Doncic.
