What to Make of the Sacramento Kings After Heartbreaking Loss to Clippers? | Locked On Kings
[Music] ah I’ve been trying to make sense of this Sacramento Kings team really all season long and I’m afraid that these last two losses in particular tell us exactly what we need to know about this Kings team in this playoff race you’re listening to lock on Kings you are locked on Kings your daily Sacramento Kings podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day and now ladies and gentlemen it is that time time for another episode of Locked on Kings hello and welcome into locked on Kings your podcast hub for Sacramento Kings coverage all season long today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel right now new customers can get $200 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins my name is Matt George I have the privilege of being your host here I’m a Sacramento Sports Anchor and reporter for ABC 10 news and this is the second time in the last three games that I’m starting the long on Kings podcast with just this this stinging feeling in my gut right a a painful loss that is numbed a little bit by the fact that the Sacramento Kings did so many good things in this game and after the Denver Nuggets loss I told you I wasn’t I wasn’t too worried I wasn’t too concerned I wasn’t feeling too bad about that loss or I was able to still find the enjoyment and find the positive in that loss not that I’m one for Silver Linings and moral victories especially in the thick of a very tight playoff race in the home stretch of the season right but there was a lot from that Denver game that I walked away from feeling feeling pretty good even though the Kings had lost that game but here we are just a couple of nights later and it’s the exact same story and the fact that there was a win in between those two games but it was against a team that the kings are ahead of in the standings and ultim better then even with dearon Fox playing without Victor WN banama right that’s the Spurs season is is pretty much over and you look back to yes the Sacramento Kings are winning more than they’re losing Doug Christie has a pretty significant winning record since Taking Over Control of this team but a majority of those wins are against teams that are below them in the standings and I’m not trying to say that to undermine anything that Doug Christie has done or undermine anything that the Sacramento Kings has been doing tonight the defense was solid again I thought Keegan Murray had the best fourth quarter the best quarter period of his career we’ll talk about that Zack LaVine finding a way to score over 30 points while hitting just one three-pointer in this game Jake laravia playing really well Devin Carter having his best game of his career so far like there’s so much from this game positive that I want to talk about and I don’t want to take away from but here you are again against teams that are at the very very least at your level but in standings and and and the general belief is are are better than you there are teams that fit into that good to Great category that you have to compete against in order to make the playoffs you had full control and you blew it you blew it two losses against two playoff or at the very very very least high-end playin teams in the Clippers case in the west two games you’re in full control and you let them slip away like y’all this is put up or shut up time man like this is the time where if this were November and this group were starting to hit their stride together I’d be like okay all right this is this is exciting right and there’s absolutely a lot to be encouraged by with how this group is coming together and so like this new found defense that the Sacramento Kings are playing like it’s it’s it’s awesome it’s come out of nowhere this group is jelling and it’s great except it’s March not November and the Kings don’t have time for the growing pains and it’s great that everybody’s figuring each other out all of a sudden but is it becoming a case of too little too late right this is like you were up seven points with a minute 30 remaining and I know seven points is not a lot in the NBA but you’re up seven points with a minute 30 remaining in this game and you allowed it to go to overtime you stop moving the basketball there was a horrendous overturned call that we’ll talk about later on in this podcast that 100% changed the outcome of this Kings game and and caused the Kings to lose no ifs ANS or butts about it but besides putting blame on the officials the Sacramento Kings have to take blame upon themselves because again these are two games against teams that are better than them two games that the kings are trying to prove that they are at the same level or at a playoff level with these group The these teams and they do it for three and a half quarters and then just couldn’t close it out maybe it’s good that they’re learning these lessons and learning in real time and trial by fire together but again these are two games that if we if the Sacramento Kings finish exactly where they’re at right now ninth in the West for the second straight year in a much worse play in position than even just eighth we these are two games we’re going to look back at and go damn damn those kills and I’m afraid this is who this king’s team is I’m afraid that while it is a fantastic thing that the Kings have found ways to handle their business against the teams they’re better than and not just do not just win those games but win them comfortably win them soundly I know they lost to the New Orleans Pelicans in a in a heartbreaking loss at the hands of really CJ McCollum the game before the the All-Star break that one stings as well but for the most part since Doug Christie has taken over the Kings have done a great job really kicking the ass of the teams that they should be beating and that’s good but the teams that you got to be worried about in the playin playoff scenario are all teams that are going to be at the very least at your level most if not all of them are going to be above your level and the kings are showing that sure they can hang but when it matters most they can’t get the job done this is the start of what I’m calling the stretch of Doom right they got the New York Knicks tomorrow night sure Jaylen Brunson isn’t playing he’s out with an injury right now but that team still is dangerous they pretty much kick your ass every single year with the way that they play and they’re rested waiting for you in Sacramento while you’re coming off of a hard-fought game where the majority of your best players played over 40 minutes tonight right and that’s just I mean that that’s just the first of a few brutal back-to-backs over the stretch you got Cleveland coming in you got a back to back against Boston and OKC in Sacramento to round out this stretch of Doom these are games where this team is truly going to be tested and I’m sorry efforts like this efforts like the last two losses are good enough to give them a chance to beat the Clippers and to beat the Denver Nuggets who I don’t mean to be disrespectful but I feel they are one of the weaker playoff teams in the west just in my opinion OKC Boston Cleveland three very legitimate title contenders the New York Knicks who are proving they still are one the king’s got to play this good just to have a chance to maybe steal one I’m just I’m afraid what we’re seeing we are being told this team is showing us that they’re figuring things out maybe they’re on the right path but for right now for the goals that they’ve set for themselves they’re they’re going to fall just short again and look I know some of you are going Matt they’re missing Malik monk they’re missing damont sabonis give them a give them a break they’re down two starters missing two starters is a big a big deal of course and trust me I’m not trying to disparage the importance of those two players those of you who have listened to lockon Kings for the last handful of years know how big of a homer I am for Dam montis freaking sabonis you’re not going to see me all of a sudden turn on sabonis into a 180 and say oh like sabon is not playing didn’t matter in this game of course it freaking matters he’s arguably the best player on this king’s team certainly one of the most important but I think it is absolutely fair to question whether or not this level of defensive intensity and success that we have seen from the Sacramento Kings over the last handful of games but really over the last two weeks but especially in these last few games against Denver against the Clippers both games without Monk and without sabonis I think it is absolutely fair to question that when those guys come back and take back those starting caliber minutes that they are going to play whether or not the defense will be able to stay at the same level because if it drops off against these really good teams coming into town it’s going to hurt now maybe offensively if the Kings had been better tonight they would have won this game and and and overtime never would have mattered right the Kings only scored 110 points and they had the scratch and Claw for those 110 but at the same time like like I mean they didn’t score more than 26 points in a freaking quarter and still had a chance to win this game on the road that’s impressive in its own right but it’s because of how this team has been playing defensively and I’m sorry I’ve seen Malik Monk and I’ve seen damont sabonis I think de damont sabonis is dragged through the mud a little bit too much with his defense but yonas Valen chunis is a better defensive player than sabonis is not a tremendously better defensive player because he was having trouble against zubats all night long tonight the Clippers were going at valent unit with zubot and zubot had a fantastic game but I am very concerned that this level of defense that we’ve seen the the Kings have success with that they’re really hanging their hat on over these last at least the last week I’m concerned that that defense is going to drop off when those two do come back and even so like the Kings one can’t afford to wait for them to get back and and hopefully both of those guys are coming back soon number two the Kings certainly can’t wait for them to get re acclimated with this new group who’s developing chemistry together so I don’t like I I do I believe the Sacramento Kings would have would be and are better off with damont sabonis and Malik monk playing yes 100% but I need to see when they come back that this team is still capable of playing the same way or that them coming back is going to improve upon the way that the kings are playing right now I don’t necessarily fully 100% believe that’s what we’re going to see when those guys return this episode of the lockon Kings pass account terms apply visit door Dash to learn more all right let’s talk about that nonsense overturned uh foul on demard D rozan in the fourth quarter like I feel pretty confident in saying if that call had been confirmed or upheld like it absolutely should have been this game isn’t going into overtime demard Rosen is getting three free throws and he’s making bare minimum two right how in the world can you look at that call review that see the same thing we’re all seeing at home and say that that was not egregious contact or whatever the hell they said on dear’s wrist that was not dear’s hand it was dear’s wrist that is a foul by every letter of the freaking law you cannot convince me otherwise I’ve watched it back time and time again and I have tried as best as I can to take my purple glasses off and look at it from the most unb EST point of view that I can I don’t get it now if that were LeBron James NBA official the Twitter account would be tweeting about sleepless nights or some bull crap after something like that that call it’s not just that you didn’t get the you actually sorry you got the call right in real time then you review it cuz it’s challenged the whole point of the challenge and review system is to take the time to make sure you’re getting calls right right but you took the time wasted our time and turned something that is clearly obviously a foul and found a way to say it’s not one stupid unbelievably stupid now I’m not one for conspiracy theories or anything like that even though I grew up watching what happened with the 2002 Kings Lakers series I am not a believer in NBA conspiracy theories but it is crap like that that happens not just to the Kings but to a lot of teams around the league and it’s crap like that that makes people say the the fix is in right I thought that was atrocious to not just get the call wrong to change the correct call with a review system and then make it wrong and have it have that kind of impact just an absolute terrible terrible decision by the official review office or whatever in New Jersey whatever the hell I don’t know who they need to get their eyes checked because everybody on the planet watched that and knew that it was a foul except for the people that actually made the call if that’s not a foul then I need to go back in time and have three or four fouls on Keon Ellis taken off the board hell the Kings lost to the Denver Nuggets just two games ago and Keon Ellis fouled Jamal Murray almost in the exact same way in that game ended up costing the king with Murray going to the free throw line and knocking down the free throws now I’m not saying that wasn’t a foul on Keon Ellis in my opinion it very much was but if this one isn’t a foul tonight then that can’t be a foul against Keon Ellis is that what you’re telling me ridiculous absolutely ridiculous now after that no call or changed call demard rosan then had the ball went down and chucked a horrendous three right I know we’ve had this conversation before and dear hit some huge shots in this game so I’m this is not going to be a crap on Lamar Fest or dear Fest or anything like that I get how good of a clutch shot maker the Demar de rozan is and I’m like sometimes I wish you would pass the ball more but that particular play where you just pulled up for three really for no reason maybe you were feeling it I don’t know I’m not in dear’s head and I know Doug Christie is going to have his back and his teammates are going to have his back every single time but man you got the Clippers in foul trouble James freaking Harden is out there on the floor who doesn’t play a lick of Defense right like you you you’re you have to get at least try to get a better look than that or for God’s sakes tomarrow if you’re a mid-range Merchant freaking step in a couple more steps demard de R rozan man you talk about the king of the tow of toe on the line Kings would have won this game with two late buckets that dear did hit where he had toes on the line and I say this as a joke but it’s 100% true Demar de R rozan would be the worst R wide receiver ever because he would not be able to keep his toe inbounds with how much he has his foot on the line it is unbelievable how many times just this season in the one year that I’ve watched dear play basketball every single day as a member of the Sacramento Kings how many times he has knocked down one of those deep twos because his toe was on the line crazy to me DeMar rosen didn’t lose the Sacramento Kings the game by the way I’m just bringing that up because we were talking about uh dear and and that that foul call I actually did like and I’m glad that dear whether he was cool with this or not Doug Christie’s call or not I like that Zack LaVine got the last shot to try and win the game in regulation it was a tough shot it was off balance he didn’t get the bounce that kawhai Leonard got for kawai’s game I’m glad Zack took the shot I’m glad they gave it to Zack not that I didn’t trust dear in that spot hindsight’s 2020 maybe dear should have taken it I don’t care I’m glad they gave Zach the look even with Zach having as bad of a game that he was from three-point range but I really like that Zach was doing a phenomenal job attacking the basket really crafty finishing with his layups through traffic around the rim I like the fact that we saw LaVine who’s been scorching I mean’s shooting 62% from three-point range over the last like five or six games was 0 of six from three hit his first three-pointer in overtime and that got him above 30 points the fact that he had a 30-point game with one of seven or whatever it was from three I’m encouraged by that unfortunately the Kings lost one more of those threes goes in the Kings win but I’m I’m I actually liked LaVine taking that last shot and I I credit Doug and credit dear for for giving him the ball and letting him take that shot I was so ready to freaking and I’m still going to do it but I was ready to obnoxiously celebrate Keegan Murray tonight I thought this was one of Keegan Murray’s not just one of the best games of his career I thought the fourth quarter that Keegan Murray played was the best quarter of his career and yes I’m aware he had a 47-point game last season I thought this fourth quarter tonight was better than any other quarter that he’s had even when he was knocking down a billion threes in that 47o performance his def defense on Kawhi Leonard was fantastic all game long well first off here’s his stat line tonight 15 points six of 12 from the field six rebounds didn’t have a single block or a steal but outside of the box score Keegan was phenomenal defensively Kawhi Leonard I know he hit the gamewinner but he had 17 points on seven of 19 shooting he struggled and had a poor night all night long having to deal with Keegan and then there were a couple possessions where Keegan guarded James Harden absolutely put the clamps on James Harden in the fourth quarter hit a clutch three in the fourth quarter off of a great pass from DeMar de rozan who I think finished with nine assists he was doing a good job moving the basketball and then he turned to the Clippers bench and said something suddenly Keegan Murray’s talking you know what I’m here for it I it’s funny I asked dear and fox about Keegan and and if there was some friendly Trash Talk between the two of them when the Kings played fox in the Spurs the other night and and fox said that he heard Keegan talk trash for the first time ever Keegan turned to dear and fo and said uh like go get your Rook Fox after Keegan got an offensive rebound and was fouled by Stefan Castle right like Keegan talking smack I love it but some people were saying hey man Keegan after you put the clamps on kawhai or put the clamps on James Harden show a little motion right scream a little pound your chest I I feel the opposite if someone clamp if I’m as good as those guys are and someone puts the clamps on me like Keegan Murray dead did and then I look at them and they just have that dead pan just face staring back at me that’s going to piss me off more than if you’d scream in my face right I thought Keegan was excellent in this game and truth be told he played really good defense on kawh on that last possession kawhai made a really good move kind of spinning away to give himself enough space to get that shot up Jake laravia I think went over and helped yonas Valen chuna stepped up and helped kawh Leonard just hit a fantastic shot tip your freaking cap it’s not like the Kings blew their a assignment and and and kawhai was wide open or cooked the kings in that moment the Kings played good defense starting with Keegan Murray kawhai hit a very very difficult shot congratulations Kawai congratulations to the Clippers that’s a really really big win for them like I said at the top of the show today’s episode of the lockdown Kings podcast all tournament long I want to make sure that this doesn’t get brushed under the rug because it’s a king’s loss but I thought Devin Carter was impressive tonight I thought he played well I thought he played hard he had an impactful 12 minutes of action eight points three or four from the field three rebounds in 12 minutes he had that putback tip dunk where he he showed off his his vertical I think it’s what like a 42 inch vertical which is really really impressive right he showed that off in the like first or second quarter of this game and I just I like I loved the aggressiveness he he also took like a no hesitation Corner three that was well defended and knocked it down in the first half I liked Devin Carter’s aggressiveness I liked how he had a positive impact on this game I like that he took advantage of the defense not really I’m not going to say like disrespecting him but it was clear they were more concerned about other guys on the floor and willing to let Devin Carter try and beat them and Carter attacked right he went to the foul line I think four times only hit one of the four free throws so that’s got to improve of course but I like the aggressiveness I like that he made good use of that opportunity and and as long as those opportunities keep coming he’s out playing Marquel folz right now he’s getting those minutes and Marquel folz isn’t now when Malik monks uh comes back whenever that may be and that may be tomorrow who knows fairy sounds like he’s very close to a return from his sprain toe when monk comes back Carter’s minutes probably go bye-bye but while you have them make the most of them and I thought Devon Carter did a good job of that I wanted to talk about this too again I’m W I hope I was hoping that it would be after a king’s win suddenly the Sacramento Kings play like an old basketball team and I think that sounds insulting but I actually don’t intend it to be they’re really solid offensively in the half court which was something that this team really struggled with in years past halfcourt offense really they’re at their best they’re not as rely on The Fast Break although Doug Christie wants them to push and transition get out and fast break more and one of the things we’re seeing from this improved defense is more fast break opportunities which like Zack LaVine in particular I feel is really benefited from but the kings are comfortable in the half court they’re slower but by that I mean more patient and more methodical with the basketball on offense they’re like isolation and mid-range Merchants sometimes to a fault sometimes too much but they’ll dribble the ball for a handful of seconds you don’t have to swing the ball around the horn it’s certainly not like the the the greatest show on court basketball that we remember the Kings playing from the the late 90s and early 2000s right but it can be effective especially down the stretch they play through their bigs which they’ve always kind of done with deont sabonis this is a little different they play through yonas valent chunis they play through Deon sabonis High picking roles things of that nature and then on the defensive end like something’s just clicked they figured it out I don’t know if the communication is suddenly way better like Doug Christie talks a lot about his philosophy as team defense right there are much better individual Defenders on this team talked about how great defensive uh defensively Keegan Murray was right Jake aravia has been really really solid defensively for the Kings since they they went out and acquired him we already know how great of an individual Defender Keon Ellis is even Devon Carter doing good things individually defensively yonas Valen chunis has good moments individ defensively but this the the the success of the Sacramento Kings defensively was going to turn around or come as a team that’s Doug Christie’s philosophy and this team has figured something out again I’m a little concerned that that will be able to continue when both de D sabonis and Malik monk come back and and take control of of high level minutes or or high uh High total high volume of minutes but this team defensively has figured something out it’s really really good to see it’s really encouraging and this is the right time to do it down the stretch when you’re trying to make it to the playoffs where defense is even more important in the playoffs it’s good to see that this team is is capable of showing it all right let’s look at the the the standings update for the Sacramento Kings the Kings they haven’t moved they’re just now more firmly in ninth place they’re now a game and a half back of the Clippers in eighth again eighth and Ninth are colossal differences nth or 10th you’re still in on the playin for sure but 9th or 10th you have to win two playin games to get into the playoffs seventh or eighth you only have to win one and even if you lose the first one you get another shot in seventh or eighth it’s what the kings dealt with last season as the ninth playin team when they got to host the first game which was fun but then they lost to New Orleans who was the eighth seed so being in eighth is a big difference the kings are a game and a half back of that eighth spot and unfortunately even though they play the LA Clippers one more time this season they’re 0 and three against the Clippers which means no tiebreaker right so now if they want to Leap Frog the Clippers who may end up eighth they may end up seventh they may end up sixth like they they’re I they’re they’re more than capable of being higher than the spot that they’re in right now and of course the race is super tight but if the Kings want to Leap Frog the Clippers in any capacity in the standings push them down to ninth and and take that eighth spot away they have to do it outright they have to beat them in the win loss column they can’t just tie them at the end of 82 games the Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors are currently in seventh and sixth but they’re tied they’re two and a half games ahead of the Kings and of course the Kings play I don’t think they have the tiebreaker against the Timberwolves I could be wrong and they play the Golden State Warriors on Thursday this week at Golden State a really big game because if the Kings win that game then they have the tiebreaker over the Warriors which will be a big deal if the Kings want to make any kind of run of trying to take a top six spot so that’s where the kings are at now I want to hear from you how you feeling are you concerned are you still able to pull more of the positives than the negatives out of this game God I wish I could I wish I could feel the same way after than that I did after that Denver Nuggets game but having two of these losses against two of these caliber of teams in the last three games it’s it’s it’s tough to tough to find the silver lining in this one but I want to hear from you at Matt Georg sack on Twitter email me Matt Georg Sports atgmailcom you of course can leave your thoughts in the YouTube comment section down below if you’re watching on YouTube appreciate Props to Kings fans in the heez, shouting "light the beam" until the weeen showed up
last season was worse losing to hornets and the likes in march was worse than this
Being a Kings fan is to be the sacrificial lamb. We suffer so other teams can thrive. This is us!
I dont want Sabonis back…ever. I HOPE the Kings trade him this offseason
fucken refs!
Game was rigged.Derozen was fouled on that 3.Kings should file a complaint to the NBA.
Haven't been this mad over a Kings loss in years- that overturned Derozen 3 point foul call was Terrible! The game was stolen- plain and simple. Kings played great without two of their starters.
How many times will the refs screw us over like dam man
Any time i see Tyler Ford, i just know there's 0% chance the Kings win. He made up a rule today that him and his associates will never use again. "In the hand area" so not the hand? What a crock of shit
Nights like these is why you would want a KD instead of a DeRozen. Onto the next 💪
I love these losses, it’s building experience for this group, when play in and playoff time come, they’ll be able to look back at games like this and the one against Denver to understand what they need to execute in order to go home with a W. This is a new group and they are playing very well with little experience and familiarity with each other. They’ll be fine.
Him trash talking probably fueled the clippers😂
Refs rigged the game. It was blatantly obvious from the calls. Keegan Murray was charged into, shot clock malfunction for free timeout, no delay of game call on clippers, took 3 free throws from deebo, "long 2's" etc.. NBA has no shame. I'm not surprised Vivek doesn't do anything about it and doesn't complain to the league.
I still believe that the kings will make top 6 in the west playoffs. They are playing good basketball and just need to keep playing better and better. Lets go kings we will get top 6 I fully believe in this squad. Matt George I always look forward to your podcast after every win or loss. Go kings
The NBA is fixed.
Gotta love Matt George and his bleeps!
Horrible overturne foul call? It wasnt a foul 😂 1 ball was out of his hands 2 the contact happened on the hand 3 the defender didnt invade the offensive player space…
Two games Sacramento in "full control"? I saw these games (against the Nuggets and Clippers) differently. That Sacramento v Denver game reminds me of the Shaq and Kobe Lakers where that team is just cruising along until when it matters in the 4th quarter. Same in tonight's game, the Clippers are just cruising along until it matters in the 4th and OT with layups and dunks. While Sacramento is content with jump shots in crunch time – with 90 seconds left in regulation, Valanciunas offensive foul, DeRozan missed jump shot, DeRozan missed jump shot, LaVine missed jump shot. Sacramento is a jump shooting team, understandable. It's nice when it's going in but…
That’s why nobody sees the all star game anymore . Karma is real . I believe the NBA is going even more down . Adam Silver is a chump for letting this happen
Jersey Suckcockcus again…Beep. No PG13 rating😂 Highly question why Demar took an early contested three to begin with?
Your opening was spot on!
I can get people being upset about last game but its not a tragedy. I am just happy to see this team compete after everything that happened this year.
I think there isnt much hope about this year but future isnt that dark as it looked 3 weeks ago.
Lavine is playing better and better, JV fits perfectly. And we are decent without sabonis and monk!
This group has room to improve.
When do Refs suffer any kind of consequences for their absolutely Rigged Profession in the NBA…or is this actually by design, how far up does this go?
Let me just throw this out there, if that was Lebron that got fouled, he gets that call, prove me wrong!
It goes without saying, the Kings are looking like a playoff team now, but they are now playing 5 on 6, 7 or 8 as was the case In Denver.
I am sick of this BS…
After tonight’s game, I’m done with the NBA! The NBA has shown their bias against the Kings since 2002. I’ve been an NBA Fan for 25 years, but no more. I’m sick and tired of the NBA takin away wins from this organization. This game against the Clippers has officially become the final NBA game I will ever watch. No more NBA games. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!!
The kings keep slamming their heads on the ceiling. The mid tier talent signings of guys like Lavine and Sabonis make them a team that just exists. That’s it. They’re just there.
I think any time the king's lose this guy's hairline goes further back 😂
