Kyrie Irving is set to be a free agent if he opts out of his player option for the 2025-26 NBA season, while Spencer Dinwiddie and Dante Exum are free agents with their contracts expiring. Mavs GM Nico Harrison will have a lot of work to do to re-gain the trust of Mavericks fans, but given the Mavs’ roster construction it will be difficult for him to do anything of significance. Someone will pay Spence more than the Mavericks will, I think he's gone. Mav's will probably re-sign Exum, he's a nice player and I doubt there's much of a market for him. I'd be surprised is Ky doesn't take off, he's proven himself and there's just too much drama around here. It shouldn't be hard to find a better situation than the Mavericks. Nico screwed himself and the Mav's by blindsiding Luka, it's just not good business to do what he did.
That roster of Mavs point guards is woeful except for Kyrie. 2025-26 is looking to be a rebuilding season. If Kyrie does come back and is some percentage of what he has shown in "23, '24 and '25 the Mavs might be a top six team.
Nico has really screwed the pooch here since he got only one draft pick which is years away. The tradeable assets we have are Gafford, Lively, Washington, Christie and Davis. Only Lively of that group shows enough upside to bring a big return. Losing any of these players will mean that our "defense wins championships" will suffer.
