Inside the NBA on Gregg Popovich Stepping Down as Spurs Head Coach
Man, we hit the motherload. We got another game seven tomorrow night as the Warriors and Rockets play in Houston. That is right after the Pacers and Cavs open up their series in Cleveland. Well, a legendary coaching career came to a close on Friday. Greg Papovic stepped down at the age of 76, but will stay with the Spurs as team president. He missed most of the season after suffering a mild stroke. His resume is without equal. Uh 29 seasons with the Spurs, most career wins, five championships, and three times the coach of the year, though it could have been more than that. Um, wow. What I mean, he was he was amazing. And and Shaq, what did you what did you know you were getting when you were facing a Greg Papovich coach team? Well, we know he’s going to be facing a team that was well disciplined. You know, we we used to call it the program, but you know, I love the man for a different reason. Growing up in San Antonio, mom and dad didn’t have a lot money for shoes. So, pair of my shoes is raggly and somebody told my father that somebody on the Spurs wore a size 22. I think it was Chuck Nepet. So, my father reached out to the Spurs. You know, Pop being military, him being military, they hit it off. Pop gave us a, you know, couple pair of shoes. Uh, never wanted anything. So, I’ve always had admiration and respect for him and playing against him all those years. You know, we we we know we had to either go through Sacramento or San Antonio to get to the championship. And when we weren’t winning, the Spurs are winning. So, like you said, a legendary career, but, you know, just just a better man. And, uh, I’m sad we’re not going to be seeing him on the court, but Pop, thank you, brother. Appreciate you very much. still has a great passion for the game and that will be in evidence as as he remains as the president. Well, number one, I just want to say thank you for his service. Um, anybody who’s in the service, I have great admiration and respect for them. Uh, I mean, to think about an NBA coach being a veteran, like that’s kind of crazy to even think about, but it just shows you the type of person he was. I just want to say thank you for your service and thank you for everything he did for the game. Uh, I’ve been blessed to get to know coach a little bit. Not great, but but just thank you what he did because in the NBA we are a family. Everybody is in this thing together. The coaches, the players, the medical staff, the fans, everybody’s part of this amazing life that we’ve had. I mean, I’m I’m 62. I’ve been a Because of that stupid little ball. Hey, because of that stupid little ball, I have lived the greatest life ever. I can’t believe how lucky and blessed I’ve been. Thank you for what you did for the game, Coach Pop. Indeed. Thank Thank you, Coach Pop. One of my favorite pictures in my office is with Coach Pop and Coach John Thompson when we had All-Star weekend together. So, that’s one of my favorite pictures I have. You know, Coach Papovich, you know, is not the Spurs. He’s the NBA. You look at his coaching tree and all the guys that are in the NBA that are coaching that are head coaches around the league is probably more than 15 16. You look at general managers and and it’s the same thing. So, everyone used to just cherrypick off of all of his coaching staff and actually their their executive staff. It’s not a what do I have office for? Cuz I I have businesses, bro. It’s not a it’s not a coaching tree when it comes to pop. It’s It’s a force. Only thing you do is talk about TV. Meanwhile, how about this? Oh, this was great. In 2008 after they had hacked Shaq during the playoffs. Here we are. Opening night, opening tip. Look on your face. Check it. Should you see this? No, cuz I said I said whoever utilizes the hacker jackets, a clown will just That’s That’s tremendous. That is tremendous. We will come back. We will wrap things up in just a second. Where is your office, Ken? Where’s your office, Kenny? What’s in there? In my mansion. Coloring books. It’s in my mansion. Coloring books in there. It’s in my mansion. the color room.

The nba looks like how it does because of pop
End of an era. Been a lifelong Spurs fan since I was 7. The fifth championship came when I was 10. Thank you Pop 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Other than starting load management, he did everything right.
Kenny as always with the stupidest take
Who doesn’t love Greg Popovich ?
Great guy!
How the f can you have great human beings like Pop in America and yet have a pos like Trump as president?
Pop should gotten 6 rings for the spurs if Ray Allen didn’t hit the game tying 3 points shot to send it to overtime.
Thanks for the amazing career Pop, nobody other than Americans cares about veterans tho
Thank you Pop for always representing San Antonio the right way 🖤 210 🤍 🐐
Luv ya POP !!! Go Spurs !!!
“Coach pop isn’t the spurs,” Kenny said.
But the spurs are coach pop. Everything the spurs has done good in my lifetime, one man has been behind it all, Pop. There’s no way i can ever think about the spurs and not also think of Pop in someway & somehow.
It’s hard to think of another coach who’s had such great success, stretched out over such a long career. Surviving 29 yrs as a hc in 1 of the 3 major professional sports league in the US, is a hof worthy accomplishment in its own.
But to reach the pinnacle of coaching success with essentially three different teams, in three different decades, thru out his 29hr tenure, proves his genius to coaching basketball withstood the nba test of time & evolutionary periods.
My coach :(. The end of an era.
poor pop he can take his woke politics with him. i wont miss this fool at all
It's a good thing Lakers played San Antonio, I know Shaq didn't want to go against Brad Miller 😂
Maybe he can hang out with Bobby De Niro and cry to each other about Russiagate.
chuck still calls pop tanking for tim duncan "CHEATING"
Oh captain, my captain
Welcome to Spurs Doc Rivers
Pat and Pop are the greatest to ever do it.
Pop "The Legend"
