EXCLUSIVE: Payton Pritchard Reacts to Magic Coach Comparing Him to Holiday | Full Interview

you know, given that you went out the last three games. Uh, I mean, I wasn’t necessarily trying to like u, you know, have his impact. It was just trying to play hard and obviously, you know, defensively Drew is unbelievable. So, somebody that can pick up the ball every time, just make it tough. And then, you know, we have so many stars offensively. You got to like, you know, you’re not going to have the ball at times, but when you do have it, you got to take advantage. You got to hit in key moments, stuff like that. So, just being efficient in your in your moments. What does it say to you that you’re very good defense? something I want to be known for. I’ve said that being a two-way player. I know people in the past want to say that like, you know, I’ve maybe been a liability, but that’s something that I’m trying to strive to overcome and be really like a a great on ball defender that can just, you know, take people out of the series. Your numbers are really good entering this game guarding Paulo and Fron. Was that something that you were you like focused on those match ups going into the series knowing that they were probably going to target you a little bit and just kind of pro? I kind of figured they were, but I was just always like, you know, where am I at? My best is ball pressure up high. Like that’s if I play them in into my game, then I have the advantage. But obviously, if I let them, you know, they catch it down to the block, they’re 610, that’s more their advantage. So if I can push the catches out, just make things tough every time, then I should be all right. And that’s kind of what I strive to do. And feel like I did a good job. Did you feel at one point that they no longer wanted to? Like it seemed like at one point they were not really hunting back. They stopped they stopped going to it. I think cuz it was just for them it was having to work extra just to even get down there and even if they didn’t having to think about dribbling every time and what moves. So, uh I think I did a good job in that area. How did you find the threes? Sure. Yeah. I mean their game plan was just after the first two was just not to let any more threes happen and they were going to let isolations happen. So obviously we went to Orlando and like we just the bench and stuff. We didn’t get any looks or shots which is okay. That’s their game plan. But eventually, you know, Water finds this level, start to make plays, and then it was like an avalanche in the second half. Was it hard to keep up the defensive intensity like when you weren’t scoring in games three and four? Obviously, like nobody wants to drop off, but did you feel like you were able to like suff, you know, overcome that mental hurdle? Uh, for sure. I mean, obviously, you want to score, but it’s just like it’s it’s not possible every game with the the people we have on our team. You know, they’re sometimes they take that load, and so how can you make an impact? And for me it was just like every game being ball pressure and just getting into the ball making it tough every time. So um I just try to leave my impact on stuff I can control. Sometimes I can’t control if I I’m going to get shots or have that I can control my effort defensively and trying to rebound. How challenging was this series? Uh just they’re they’re a really good team. Very physical. So that was a it was a physical challenge. Uh I thought defensively they’re probably the best team defensively we’ve seen uh at guarding the ball. So, uh, it was definitely a good challenge. Very physical. So, it was great.

  1. The greatest skill PP has is his ability to open the floor up for the rest of the team because he's earned a reputation all season as a knock down shooter from beyond the arc.

  2. I thought it was genius to recognize that putting Pritchard on Wagner at times (on purpose) could reap benefits. He really messed with Wagner's flow. For example, Wagner had figured out he could take KP off the dribble with success, but when PP got on him it required him to change tactics. Wagner never really made the adjustment. All of this is the kind of chess move over a long series that wears a team down. The comparison Coach Mosley made between Holiday and Pritchard was high praise, and spoke to the obvious: you can't pick on PP's defense with different matchups and switches when he is out there. In fact, PP may throw an entire team out of their game plan. Nice job Payton!

  3. Dude gives great interview. Just consistently doesn't say something dumb. The C's are very good at saying the right things, which says a lot about the completeness of the team culture.

  4. I think Pritchard has it in him to become a great defender. If he accomplishes that and becomes a 2 way player the league will have to take notice. I think this man should be starting PG on a different team because he's really like that.

  5. Defense was incredible this series. This guy guarded banchero who is 6โ€™10 and made it tough almost every possession. Hats off. Itโ€™s so cool cuz heโ€™s like my size. Breaking barriers

  6. I love this team so much. JT and JB both being elite and sharing the ball to get guys like Jru or Payton going. Jru being an elite defender. Payton, Sam H coming in a knocking down shots, and playing solid D. Derrick White is a stone cold killer. So much to love about this team but it's their connected ness on both ends that I especially appreciate. Loved the way they grinned it out against a tough, young Magic team.

  7. They comin to get ya PP.. whether they will or not, who knows.. But the magic are missing dudes that do you, so they have a list and im sure you are on it.
