What are we talking about today? You can see on your screen you’re watching on YouTube, but if you’re not, we’re talking about Giannis and the Spurs. Yeah, there’s a lot of talk, chatter, you know, looking on social media. Oh, Spurs and Giannis are linked. Um, you know, the Greek freak next to Wimi sounds good, right? But ultimately, is this a fool’s errand? We’re going to be discussing how it could work. You know, kind of like the overview, thoughts on it, and then get into Yeah. the reality of it. Are there financial implications involved? What about just basic fit? What if it’s just the freaking dream and it’ll never happen? We’re going to be discussing that and more and then some NBA playoff talk to close out the show. Let’s go to bring in our guest. I think he’s ready. I can see him backstage there. Yeah, I I think he’s ready. He’s I think he’s Yeah, he’s getting ready to sit down, everybody. Let’s go to bring him in. He is James. Pleasure with San Antonio Sports Start. James, we’re wrapping up the week here lockdown spong because we got you on board, buddy. Thanks for taking time out of your uh busy schedule to join us. Of course, man. Always got time for you, my friend. By the way, looking fresh, dude. Look at that, man. Woo. I decided to bust out the p stripes today. So, yeah. Yeah. Me, I’m just wearing my Bellator t-shirt. That’s all. Yeah, I saw I saw Bellator in Connecticut a few years ago and um yeah, it’s not the same as the UFC, but hey, I’ll take it. I’m a big I’m a big uh you know, combat fighting sports guy. Yeah. Yeah, I that’s probably like my second favorite like boxing and MMA stuff like that. And you know, I’m just a child I’m a child of the 80s, man. I grew up playing Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, you know, karate kid, you know, Yeah, exactly. Makes sense. Uh make sure to follow Pleasure on X at I am Pledger again. He’s with San Antonio Sportsar, host of Extra Innings. He’ll talk about that and so much more. And uh yeah, so here we are. Pleasure. The offseason’s here and the let the chatter begin, right? Uh and a big chatter is Giannis and the Spurs. Yeah, the Greek freak in San Antonio. Could that happen? You know, before we I guess yeah, rain on the parade, let’s talk about just what it would be like having Giannis in a silver and black uniform will be tremendous. You know, next to you put Castle out there, you know, who knows whatever pieces you’re left over with in a deal with Milwaukee, but and you got Dear and Fox there. Just those four guys alone, wow, that that could really push the Spurs, dare I say, to the Western Conference Finals and beyond Pledger. Uh maybe it depends what you give up because you mentioned Castle’s name in that group with Giannis. You’re assuming you’d hang on to him because let’s face it, this isn’t Luca Donuch and the Lakers. They’re not doing this in the secret of the night. Like yeah, they’re g if if they decide to move Giannis, they’re going to let the entire NBA know so that they can get the best offer for themselves because they have to do that because it is not LA. It is not like they they are beholding like the the last superstar they had before Giannis was Kareem Abdul Jabar. Yeah. I mean you could count Michael Red I guess but Terry Cummings know and love the T Glen Big Dog Robinson Vin Baker. But seriously like they haven’t had a player like Giannis’s ilk since Kareem. And it is not easy for a small market to be able to do that. You have to be able to draft and develop that guy and then keep him there. And so they’re not just going to go ahead and say, “Yep, we’re done. This is it. Who whoever gives us the the worst offer can have them. That’s that’s not how this is going to work.” I imagine Milwaukee is gonna get max value for a Jianniso and you can bet your bottom dollar. They’re gonna want along with those draft picks a proven commodity in return. Absolutely. And you look at just what could be in San Antonio again instant title contenders. You have instant you know just devastating offense, devastating defense. you know, Wimi and Giannis. I mean, is anybody going to score on these guys with their length and size and athleticism? You have a Giannis that’s entering or in the midst of his prime right now. Let’s see what he just did this past regular season. So much more. He’s an international player. San Antonio, international guys, they seem to fit there. So, that’ll work. It It looks like on paper if something would happen, it would be good. But you talked about the cost. What? Castle, what multiple first round picks? I mean, it feels like that would just be the starting point for any deal with Milwaukee, James. Yeah. And I’ I’m I’ve read that with Houston, Raphael Stones always said when it comes to I guess whether it’s Booker or Durant or Giannis or whoever it may be, they’ve let it be known that Amen Thompson is deemed untouchable in their trade discussions. So you’re going to have to go one way or the other. You’re the Spurs are either going to be like there’s no player that we would bring in that is going to be worth the cost of a Stefon Castle Fox/Wimby or they’re going to be like we have to build this team around Wimi. nothing outside of him and probably Fox who we just traded for are off the table. And the only thing that you can hope to do is supplement talent for capital, right? And but even then, if I’m a Milwaukee, I want something I want something to sell my fans other than, you know, a draft pick that’s likely going to be in the late 20s, right? Yeah, exactly. Yeah, the Spurs definitely could afford the sticker price of whatever Milwaukee were to throw out there. Yeah, it it would be steep. Uh and we’re talking about pretty much mortgaging the Spurs future, aren’t we, James? I don’t know if you’re mortgaging the future, but whatever you think the foundation of this team is, you’re talking about altering it. I mean, we all think that C Stefon Castle is him, Wimby, and Fox. Yeah. As your pillars that you are building upon with this franchise. If you move one of those pillars, obviously you’re replacing with another pillar in Janessa Kmpo, but it changes the dynamic a little bit as well too. Your pillar went from being 20 years old to 30 something years old, 30 I believe. And all of a sudden, you’ve altered the the dynamic of the window that this this group is going to be effective and for how long. You’ve changed the dynamic from being a 10-year window to maybe a 5year window with these three in place. Yeah, absolutely. And again, if the Spurs were to make a deal with Milwaukee and pay, you know, pony up with the prices, that’s definitely sending a message to Wimbeam, hey, we’re bringing you a star player. We’re going to try to get this uh playoff play in drought over with. We’re going to make a push to playoffs now. Now, that’s skipping steps, James. I thought they don’t skip steps. steps. Yeah, exactly. I thought skipped steps, but but by the way, quick aside, I think they have been skipping steps. I just want to say, you know, you trade for Dear Fox, that’s a huge skipping steps there moment. Answer it, though. Yeah, I think it is. Yeah, I think it is. What did they give up? What do you mean? Well, it doesn’t matter what they gave up. It’s what they brought in to help get out of the rebuild faster. But if I bring something in, I’m adding to it. I haven’t skipped a step. I I’ve just added to the base that I put in place. Um, skipping a step would be like going and trading. Yeah. For y like where you’re giving up multiple assets that are actually would have been deemed to be a part of the future of this franchise. Yeah. To skip past them developing and getting a readymade piece in place. That’s skipping steps. That’s where you’re you’re swapping out the potential for the finished product and now you’ve skipped the steps of developing the guys that are that you’re bringing up in terms of bringing in the ready-made piece. All right. Well, you know, on paper again, it’s great. You know, Giannis in San Antonio, one two punch, one, two, three, four punch to wherever is left over from the deal. The point is it would be great. Offense, defense, ticket sales, prime time TV, deep playoff runs, right? All good, right? Spurs should do it. But should we pump the breaks? Yeah, we’re going to talk about that in just a few seconds with James Pledger of San Antonio Sports Star. Yeah, we’re going to be asking, you know, like is this just really a fool’s errand? Is this just really just chatter and that’s it? Uh, we’re going to do that and more right here on Lockdown Sports. Once again, we’re joined by James Pledger following on X on X at I am pleasure. Hey, this is Hot Rod and I’m RC from Cybertron Springs and you’re listening to Lock on Spurs with Jeff Garcia. And we’re back right here on Lock Doll Spurs with the man, the legend himself, James Pledger of San Antonio Sportsar, host of Extra Innings. He’ll be bragging about the star, why he should be tuning in uh right like right after this episode of Lotto Sports. Then you go to San Antonio Sportsar, check out all the lineup they got there for you. Uh, quick aside, James, are you ready for Thunderbolts? I am. I’ve heard really good reviews about it. They say it’s one of the better uh MCU projects in a while. So, I am pretty pretty pumped about Thunderbolts and what it could potentially bring. Although, sending this group of people against uh Century, it’s like suicide. Yeah, it it really is. Yeah, I’m looking forward to uh checking it out. I live downtown, so I can go to the theater, the River Center Mall, check it out there. Hopefully, it’s playing, but I I I’m definitely anxious for it. I hope it is because when it comes to the big screen, I think Marvel needs to beef it up a little bit. Uh kind of been more misses than hits lately. Although, I think the small screen TV, they’ve been doing okay. Daredevil Reborn is just phenomenal. So, Oh, so good. Yeah. So good. All right. What are we talking about right now? We’re talking about Giannis and the Spurs. Um, and at this juncture of our conversation, we got to be asking a bigger question, right? Sounds good, right? Silver, black, Giannis, Wimi, Fox, absolutely left over. But again, is it just really a fool’s errand? Is all this really for nothing? Jay, before we hit record, you really wanted to go hard on something and that was about the financial aspect of it. Talk to us about that. Why should you be speaking right now and alerting Spurs fans that hey, sure the Spurs got a lot of cash on hand, but yeah, it may, excuse me, it may hurt them in the long run. I mean, technically they don’t have a lot of cash on hand. They’ve got 143 million on the books right now as you speak with all their contracts combined. They’re going to extend Dear Fox this upcoming off season. Giannis Antmpo is a 50 plus million dollar player. They hold 14.1 million available in cap space as we sit going into the off season after their two lottery pick draft cap holds. So yeah, they they don’t have a ton of wiggle room. You’d have to offload some some big contracts to bring him in. But remember, offloading contracts, cool. You offload two, three, four guys, you bring in one. You still have to supplement that. But all you did was change the dynamic of the money. Three players for one. You still have to build a team around these players. And that’s something that you saw at least in Los Angeles, uh, with the Lakers who just got eliminated. Sure. You’ve got Luca and you’ve got LeBron and you’ve got all this money tied up in them and then Austin Reeves uh is about to get receive a huge extension. What? You have no money to do anything else and they have no draft picks to be able to do anything else to supplement the rest of their roster. Minnesota has a complete roster. They have Rudy Gobber. They have Ant. They have Nazi Reed. They, you know, they have a bunch of players that fit very specific roles and they’re paid subsequently very well. They need, you know, perimeter shooting. They need a lock down wing defender. They need a big that can uh patrol the paint like maybe a Brook Brook Lopez would uh provide this off season. They just don’t have the financial space to be able to do stuff like that right now because they’ve got so much money tied up in other contracts. If you bring in a Giannis and Takoupo, you are doing what the Suns did. You’re like, I’m going to max out Booker. I’m going to max out KD. I’m going to bring in a Max in and Beal and I’m just going to figure it out with guys from the GLeague. That’s not a great way to build a team. That’s not a great way to build a roster. Like, it’s sexy. Yeah, it’s got all the headlines, but you need players around those players. We saw that this year that they they were missing very much three-point spacing and interior defensive presence and that manifested itself in a big way throughout the season. Mhm. Do you blow all of your available cap space to bring in one more superstar to pair or do you try and fill in the gaps around the edges with this team and see if Whim, Fox, and Castle are your future? Yeah. And and this factor too, the loyalty factor. Um you know, there’s that the Spurs would have to deal with. Uh will Giannis leave Milwaukee? He’s been very adamant that he loves the city, he loves the franchise, but we heard many superstars before him say the exact same thing and leave as Kawawaii Leonard in San Antonio. Um, there’s also too, will Milwaukee even want to deal with him, deal him away to begin with. He’s still under contract. They don’t have to trade him, James. If they want to just write out his contract, they can do it. The only way he can do it is just force himself out if he really wants out. But he’s never shown any history of doing this pledge. So, there’s that those factors as well. Yeah. I mean, to be fair, he could pull a deer in Fox and be like, I’m only going here or here, but I guarantee you he’s not going to screw over Milwaukee in that type of way. The the city’s been good to him. The fan base has been good to him. He may limit it to a handful of teams, three, four, whatever, but he’s going to make sure that like he’s not burning the franchise to the ground on his way out the door. Mhm. He he seems like way too good a person to do that. And you hear that with the how he handled the situation with Hallebertton’s dad and how he spoke about it afterwards. Like he he is a good dude at heart. And so I I do think he will allow Milwaukee to be able to set themselves up for future success as best they can when losing a NBA superstar in the process. Yeah, absolutely. And then you look at just kind of circling back to what you said to start the segment about the financial side of things. The Spurs historically don’t really go spend that type of cash. They’ve been historically known for being penny pinchers trying to fit things as best they can. Bill might get into that tax bracket when they were championship contenders, but it’s for ancillary pieces to bring back a Patty Mills, to add uh Steve Cerr, like to, you know, the pieces and parts that make championship teams, they’re willing to spend that extra million or two. Yeah. But not like completely wreck their salary cap. Yeah. So, there’s that. The Spurs financially never really go beyond, you know, uh, breaking the bank. I mean, they they rarely do that. Uh, so they’re not like the Lakers. I mean, they’re not in the big market even to do that. So, they can’t. So, there’s that. But all in all, you want to sum it up here. Sounds good on paper, James. We’ve been saying looks good, but we had to like put it on a weight scale here. Yeah. Is it just a fool’s errand ultimately for the San Antonio Spurs and Giannis? It might be like it it all comes down to cost. This is a cost sum total business and you have to figure out what the price is to acquire versus keep versus what it does to your future. And you have to weigh all of those factors in when when determining this because we’ve seen whether it was Brooklyn or Phoenix, you know, these big super teams really financially strap how you build around the key players that you bring in and max out. The Spurs are getting very close. They’re about to max one guy out with Dear Fox. If you bring in um GA Sensit all of a sudden there is a second Max guy. super guy all of a sudden and Wimi is going to be that. So, you’re you’re starting to really put the clamps on how you build around these guys and hoping that guys just want to come play with Wimby, which proven that is a thing. So maybe that’s something they can, you know, lure as a carrot like, hey, come win a ring with Wimi the same way they did in getting guys like David West and different Treny McGrady and different players to come towards the end of their career chasing a ring. Yeah, get T-Mac. Yeah, T-Mac. I forgot about that. Yeah, T-Mac. He got close, James. He got close to getting a title. He got close. Yeah, he got close. But yeah, by the way, sports fans or lock on sports fans, what a way to end the week, huh? raining on that Giannis parade here in San Antonio. This will be Fiesta week in San Antonio, James, and parades and here we are just pouring that. I’m not saying it’s out of the realm of possibility. I’m just saying there’s a cost benefit analysis that is going to have to come into account when you talk about the Spurs, how they run their finances, where the team is, and what you’re giving up in return because you’re talking about potentially potentially when you’re looking at it, four unprotected first round picks, maybe those Atlanta since they’ll be more valuable by the time you get Giannis Anticoup Castle and a combination of like Sohan, Vel or Kell like you’re talking about three to four players or maybe more. Four picks unprotected maybe more like that. You’re doing a lot of substantial damage to the rest of your roster. This isn’t like we’re just dropping Giannis in and goodbye Jeremy Sohan or whoever it may be. That’s not how this is going to work. And so there’s going to be significant regression on the roster to add someone of his caliber usually, unless he says, “I’m only going to San Antonio. Get what you can get.” Yeah, exactly. Well, maybe maybe hopefully that would happen. I I would love for that to happen there. Hey, let’s go talk to Michael Dell during the break. See how much money he can spare for Giannis and, you know, to fit it in financially. He is James Pledger with San Antonio Sports Star. Follow him on X at I ampledger. When we come back, we’re going to be discussing the NBA playoffs. Catch you up on what’s going on in the postseason with the Spurs were in the postseason. But hey, maybe next season. We’ll be talking about that and more right here on Locked on Spurs. I am Megatron. Do not fail me and subscribe to Locked On Spurs with Jeff Garcia. And we’re back right here on Lockdown’s Worth with James Pledge, San Antonio Sports Star’s very own host of Extra Innings. He’ll be talking about that in just a few minutes. Just going to wrap up today’s episode with some NBA playoffs talk. And you know, I got to talk about your Rockets here, but what’s going on with them? Is Is Mr. Green really the guy for them? Isn’t Sangon why, you know, why are they so jackal and hy right now? He uh Fletcher. Well, that’s uh that’s the one thing we all wondered going into the postseason as Rockets fan is when it comes down to it and you need a bucket, who’s the guy on this team? And I I I don’t know who that has been through the year. I mean, it’s a great team. It is a really good team, but when things slow down and you get in a pinch, who’s your guy? Who’s your Steph? Who’s your uh Giannis? Who who’s the guy you’re going to for a bucket? Yeah. When the buckets are starting to dry up. And I don’t know who that is for the Rockets. Maybe it should be Shingun. I It feels like they kind of want it to be green. Like these are all, you know, questions that were like when you saw the matchup with the Warriors, you were like that is the worst possible matchup because playoff experience, veteran leadership, and you know, a couple of of superstars along with Draymond Green being kind of the the down and dirty guy that can really kind of just throw a team, especially a young team, out of their mindset or out of a rhythm or, you know, just take their focus out of things by just being Draymond Green. You know, get some guys some technical fouls for just reacting. You know, that is what he does. This off season in the NBA is going to be insane. It because there is that dynamic. You look at what Oklahoma City’s done and and you talk about the Spurs and not skipping steps and Sam Prey coming from this tree and all that stuff and you’re like, “Yeah, it makes sense.” Like sometimes they have to go through these learning trials and tribulations to take that next step. Yeah. And so to me, that’s very very important for the the the future development. And when it comes to the Houston Rockets, do they need that extra year? Yeah, they were the two seed if they lose to Golden State, is that reason to blow it up or do you give it one more year? Because much like with these coaches like Malone and Jacob, like you’re not going to have Giannis and KD and Booker like available every year to you potentially in the trade. like those are kind of, you know, this off season this group of guys is available kind of thing or these kind of guys are forcing their moves. It doesn’t happen every offseason and maybe next year’s off season you don’t have the same level of player available to you after you sat and waited this out to see if this group could take the next step. So, it’s a really cool psychological dynamic that, you know, organizations take with teams and whether it plays out or not, it’s just to me it’s fascinating. It’s one of the the underrated aspects of sports that I love. Yeah. Also, this weekend we got the uh Nuggets and Clippers. If the Clippers lose this series, it’s on them, man. They had every opportunity to close out Denver from game one 20. What was that? 20 plus turnovers. leads. So, you know, again, if the Clippers lose this one, it’s on them. Uh, but Denver, you know, you got Murray scoring player for player, player for player, if you if I was just lining up the teams. Yeah. First overall pick is who of the two teams. Yeah. Oh, uh, Joker. Okay. Second overall pick is Kawaii. Okay. Third overall pick is Murray. Fourth overall pick, Harden. Harden. Yeah. Right. And then then what where are you going with it? There’s going to be a lot of Nuggets names call. You’re going to talk about Eron Goran. You’re going to talk about Michael Porter Jr. You’re going to talk about uh Christian Braun. Like Well, he’s going to bring up uh Zubot as the next pick. Oh, okay. Yeah. But like like the Clippers get pretty thin after that, right? like and so there is more depth to that Nuggets team which when you’ve got the best player and you know the the the depth on top of that it’s really hard for me to write that team off in a playoff series and I know a lot of people got eye on the Clippers really late they’re playing really well at the end of the year Kawhai’s healthy Kawhai being Kawhai that’s great Like it’s still James Harden in the playoffs, too. It is. Yeah. Yeah. And he’s It looks like he’s showing his age already there a little bit. I mean, I think that’s been there for a couple of years. It’s just progressively Yeah. getting more. Yeah. Apparent. Yeah. Very apparent. Yeah. He is James Pledger with San Antonio Sportsar. Follow him on X at I am Pledger. From Extra Innings to the Blitz. So many more shows on y’all’s broadcast there. The Bucks will probably demand Castle on top of the other rotational players and a slew of 1st round picks. I'm not really keen on this move at all given that the Spurs will still have problems taking and making consistent 3 point shots.
Spur fan don't know what they want …. If one of the greatest players says i want to go to San Antonio you make it happen….. Gezzz
Kd will be much cheaper I like that better
He is 37 π.
Ill trade vassel, barnes and champagni plus some draft picks .
Try to keep fox , castle , keldon jeremy wemby .
I dont mind outting castle in there. If they demand it .
And if there is some cap spqfe sign dennis Schroeder as the backup pg
If Spurs get Giannis they aiming the ring not the playoffs. Giannis is an MVP player.
with yannis you dont skip only one step….you skipping a decade……πππ
there is no 10 year window you would have to change and make moves every time
Heya Jeff are you Flipino or Latino?
Donβt wager the future. Take the pillars and build on them like we always have.
Man yall smoking crack if u spurs fans think bucks trading Giannis to yall fohπππ
Us Spurs fans always get so attracted to our own players that we never want to take a chance on something that looks awesome visually but we love the development aspect of our franchise. But we don't have Duncan anymore to allow these guys to develop like that. Wemby is great, but has yet to be as impactful in winning so far.
"Skipping steps"πππ
If you get chance to get Giannis, you fecking get him
Yawnus isnβt a Spurs player. The Spurs only add prima donna players to the team once there is a championship framework in place and the prima donnas figure out they better play team ball if they want a(nother) ring. Other than Kawhine, no Prima Donna Spurs players have won anything, and his win was a one time rental job. Howβve the Clips been doing the last few years? π
If I were the Spurs I'd give the Bucks Castle and a #1 pick for Giannis.
Wth? They mention Vin Baker but not Ray Allen?? π
No I don't think it's a fool's errand but what I do think is the price that is being bandied about to get him is a little too much I would not give up Castle nor the draft picks..
