Celtics trailing in the series for the first time since 2023. Let’s look back at how that happened. Jason Tatum got off to a hot start. He scored 13 of his 23 in the first quarter. Smith, you see him running the floor getting an easy finish. Then Tatum again inside the arc. Yeah, I thought tonight what might have been a 30 40 piece tonight, but he slowed down in that second half and give Carl Anthony Towns that was a difficult shot. made look easy. Sixth man of the year, Peyton Pritchard by Mitchell Robinson. Boston up by three. Pritchard had 13 points. Derek White running the floor. And again, John, it’s the Celtics inside the arc scoring. Yeah, like they did it early in this first half. You know what I mean? Getting outlets, getting stops, attacking the basket switches. They wasn’t selling. They was getting to the paint, making plays with each other. It just seemed like the whole second half they just wanted all threes. Carl Anthony Town sitting on the bench because he had three fouls at the 9-minute mark in the second quarter. Celtics went on a 17 to five run up 16 at the half. Poured it on thick like syrup to start the third quarter. But hold on, OG in the house. OG Anobi helping to lead the comeback for the Knicks. They end the third quarter on a 20-3 run and make it just a two-possession game. Brunson pulling up, giving out some eye candy. It’s a 28-9 run going into the fourth quarter. Boston ice, frigid, cold from outside. Shot just 25% relying on a three. But OG here again, he made six of those. He was feeling it. Knicks within one. Then Brunson off the ball movement. Knicks tied up at 89. Then Brunson, another one. Your clutch player of the year. 29 points, 11 of those coming in the fourth. Peekaboo at it again. But you know what, John? Derek White comes up so big for the Boston Celtics. Yeah, he makes shots. He’s the guy that’s going to be right there. But they had so many of these good looks. He just made them right there to get the lead back. He made five threes. Celtics up by one. OG and Anobi. Another big shot. 29 points for OG. Jaylen Brown inside. Look at that. A bucket inside. More than that. As you can see, the Knicks totally different. pump fake. Two-point shots. Even though they missing it, they playing the game the right way. Derek White on the floor, like we said, doing everything for the Celtics. Tied at 100. What do you think of this shot selection, Smitty? Oh, I didn’t like it. I thought you look at the time on the clock, you got to drive that one hard, get to the rim, make a play, try to get foul. John, what about this look for the Knicks? Good look. You I mean, Drew Hall did did a great job. Like we said, we didn’t know why he was taking the ball out. Drew denied him. He hit it back door. Lucky Albert was there to give a the test on the shot, but Jaylen Brunson would probably want that one back, but he’s fine with it cuz they got the win at the end of the day. 6 on the clock. Celtics try to get one off. I don’t know what that was. Not really a shot attempt by Jason Tatum. So, we go to overtime in the extra session. Jaylen Brunson doesn’t score for the Knicks. Sweetie, how impressive is it that he doesn’t score and other guys get involved? Well, you can see those guys with confidence. Bridges OG Anovi did a nice job. He did his job in that fourth quarter and got some help from his teammates. That’s a big one from Jaylen Brown. That’s his only made three. John, what about this foul? Why was it that continuation and three free throws for Brown? Well, it was close cuz right there he should have just grabbed him. He wanted to act like he was going for the ball and grabbing so he don’t even have an opportunity and he lucky the call just didn’t go his way where they could have said it was three-point shots and then that’s a big steal from Muel Bridges there. MueL Bridges 51 minutes played had eight points, seven assists, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks. And really, you know, John, it’s the three steals and two blocks in those 51 minutes that prove crucial for the New York Knicks. Well, when they got Mel Bridg, you know, I mean, he was with Phoenix, he wasn’t a guy you looked at to be a score. He was a guy that was a defender, a slasher, do the little things for you. Then he worked on his game, got to start making mid-ranges and open threes. Then he had opportunity in Brooklyn where he got to be free. But with the Knicks, this is the type of guy they need. Make the big shots in the corner form, defend the best players, and do the little things as they dirty work to help Josh Hart out. You know, Smitty, take us into what that locker room must be like for the Celtics, right? This is a group won a championship together, same coach, same guys. Uh Chris Porzingis did not come back after halftime with an uh illness. But what what do you imagine those guys are talking about in this moment? Well, I think right now just uh taking tough threes, taking contested threes, just playing around the three-point line. And nothing wrong with shooting threes because they’re one of the best teams to ever shoot threes in the history of the game. But there’s a time where you got to get your feet in the paint. Now, if you want to spread it out for a three, but you got to break down the defense first. I think there’s some opportunities off the bounce. I think there’s some opportunities when Brunson is switching on Al Horford. Just get some straight post ups instead of the home run throwing it. You know, we all learn this, John. You making an entry pass from the three-point line at the top of the key all the way into the basket, get it to the wing, let Al post up, let the defense collapse. But I also want to give a credit to Miles McBride. I thought he gave the Knicks uh when there was Brunson when Brunson was out, I thought he gave them a big lift. Yeah. Uh 11 points off the br off the bench for Miles McBride. Also hit three three-pointers. And John, if you flip that, that’s exactly what the Celtics needed. A little bit of a spark from a guy hitting from outside. Miles McBride provided that for Yeah, I think he and he also balanced Payton Pitcher, you know, I mean 11 points pitcher had 13, but he played those big minutes at the same time when they took Brunson out at the end. They put McBride in because he’s a great defender. So, he does other little things. I also think the Celtics, you know, I mean, they lost when Pzingles is out. Usually when they go on that run and they not making threes, they got somebody that can go to the post and score for them. So I think at times like Smitty said, Jaylen Brown, I mean Jay Jaylen Brown or J Jason Tatum should go to the post a little bit when they get those mid matches just to get a touch in there. Then you can kick out for your threes. And that’s what you usually see when they get stagnant when they’re not making threes. They would go to Pzing in the mid post.
