Courtside with Cavs on SI: What Are the Cleveland Cavaliers’ FOCUS AREAS vs. the Indiana Pacers?
What’s up Cavs fans? Spencer German Spencer Davies with you for our latest episode of Courtzside with the Cavs on SI. [Music] Please like the channel, subscribe to it if you haven’t done so already, where you can find lots of Cleveland Cavaliers content with us here with the Cavaliers on SI. Um, all the postgame stuff, stuff from practice today that Spence got. So, a lot of good stuff over there. We’ll have you covered throughout the rest of the playoffs. But Spence, this is the first time I think we’ve done an episode sitting down together. How about that? Sitting down. Usually we’re at our computers. Usually we’re doing like our standups together, but we never like sat down and just like been able to do our podcast together. So, this is this is a turning over a little new leaf here. Maybe a sign of things to come. If we’re doing some of these on the road during the the rest of the playoffs, so we’ll see. Um, but certainly a lot to talk about as we get you ready for this Pacers series by the end of this episode. We will make a prediction for the series. Spence told me he’s already got his set, so we should be good to go. But um yeah, the Indiana Pacers obviously series starts on Sunday and there’s a lot to to talk about with this team and there’s been some things sort of said not from the Cavaliers but about the Pacers as a team which we’ll get into. But first and foremost, Spence, um, what are you just kind of expecting from this Pacers team that that plays a very fast pace, similar to the Cavs, um, but something that obviously you have to account for, and it was something that was talked about today after practice, but even the first two days here at practice, everyone has pointed to the fact that this team really is high octane. and they like to get up and down the floor and that their conditioning is going to have to be really really good to sort of hang with them on top of trying to defend that five out offense that they like to play up and down transition multiple ball handlers and you have the challenge too that a lot of people are forgetting Pascal Seakum is their leading scoreer everyone looks at Tyrese Hallebertton because he’s the allstar he’s the one that’s kind of the straw that stirs the drink but Pascal has been there done that he’s an NBA champion let’s not forget about Miles Turner too as well being the five out offense. He can spread the floor, but he can also attack off the dribble. And then defensively, we know he’s really a load to handle as rim protector. So, the Cavs have their hands full against this Indiana team that plays fast, but is also really sizable and has a lot of advantages that they can look to. Yeah. Um and and I, you know, you brought up some of the key, I think, players in this matchup for Indiana and and sort of what they bring to the table. I’m fascinated to see like I think Evan’s going to be so pivotal in this series just because of his ability. Obviously, he can defend all five positions, but he’s going to be matched up with Pascal Seakamlot. There’s probably going to be some stretches where he’s out there as the five matched up with with Miles Turner. So, he’s going to be asked to do a lot in in regards to you talk about defending that that five out offense. He’s gonna have to run out to to guard somebody on the outside and then sometimes crash in and guard somebody near the near the rim. And like we obviously this first series you we we talked about it like game one was the Tai Jerome show. Game two was Donovan Mitchell sort of saving you at the end. Games three and four was everybody sort of contributing to pull out the heat. This this is the ser the first series where it feels like certain individuals are going to have to sort of step their game up and play to the level that that you’re counting on and expecting in the playoffs. And it might sort of change hands night to night. It might be Donovan one night. It might be Evan Moy one night. But I think Moy is gonna play such an important role in this series. Whereas last series, not that he was taking a backseat, but I don’t think he was as crucial. Like you were gonna win that series with or without Evan Moy going off, I think is my point. Like this this round it feels like you’re going to need him on his agame, both ends of the floor, really doing his thing because this is a team that can sort of counter him on both ends of the floor with with Miles Turner’s presence, but also with Pascal Seakum being the scorer that he is. Yeah, I think Evan’s gonna have to rebound really well in this series just because of the amount of threes that are going to go up. Again, Indiana one of the top corner shooting three-point teams in the in the postseason so far. And there’s going to be a lot of long rebounds. So, the guards are obviously going to have to help and so is, you know, the Max Streuses and the Sam Arrows and Dean Wes. But, I feel like Evan and Jay have to set the tone on the boards and make sure that they’re doing the right things to get their team’s possessions. And when they get their teams possessions, that means that they’re going to be allowed to go out in transition. That’s what DeAndre Hunter talked about on day one was when they’re at their best, they’re running. They’re playing fast. And not that you want to get into a track meet with the Pacers, but you want to be able to do what they do and get up and down the floor and match that effort. Why do you think because this has been an interesting topic of conversation. I I I I don’t know. And the Cavaliers players have downplayed it. Like they haven’t they haven’t like given any they haven’t accepted it as a take. They haven’t even given it any credence whatsoever. They they’ve very much downplayed this narrative that’s out there about how Tyrese Hallebertton was voted the the the most overrated player in the NBA, I guess, by his own peers. Donovan made the joke yesterday I saw where he was like, “I didn’t vote in Kenny Atinson, I think, said the same thing.” Like, I don’t know who voted on this, but it wasn’t me. Um, and clearly they’re trying to make sure they’re not giving any extra bulletin board material to that team. They’ve got respect for him for sure. They got respect for this team in general. But where does that come from? Like where where is this narrative all of a sudden? Because I’ve never I’ve never heard this either. Like I’ve never heard this really talked about up until this like last week where all of a sudden like yeah, Tyresese Hallebertton isn’t as good as we think. Like I’ve always thought he he’s a damn good player. He’s a he’s a allstar like you mentioned and the Cavaliers clearly have that same respect for him. I like where where was this birthed and why is this a topic all of a sudden? I just think, you know, certain outlets put out a poll and probably talked to 12 to 15 players and that was representative as the of the league as a whole and this is how you end up down this road. And unfortunately, it’s just kind of where our business is sometimes. Yeah. But I I know that they have a ton of respect for Tyrese. the way that he’s able to to to work the pick and roll game with with Miles and in some sets obviously um you know the other bigs and not to mention the way that he runs the floor and is an outlet passer as soon as he gets a rebound skip pass up the floor um get guys moving and and automat he’s a lot to do with what the Pacers do up and down the floor like he is a very big part of that and what’s really impressive to me is that Tyrese does not turn the ball over I think he can get loose with his handle sometimes times, but he’s really solid and taking care of it and he’s never going to beat himself. Yeah. And I think that that’s a really big part of this, too. And then the the fact the sheer fact that he’s got the crossover that he does, but he’s also got, as I mentioned, by the way, he got Giannis with that crossover the other night to win the game. And and and listen, Giannis is one of the best defenders in this league, like maybe of all time. And sometimes you just get got he got he got on that one. That was a nasty crossover left to right and then flew right by. Right. And then that the threat of having that crossover to get to the lane. He can also do the little toe tap and then step back and and shoot a three with that really elongated form that we’re going to see in this series. And he’s going to have a really good game multiple times I think for the Cavs. I said on another show, I think that the Cavs strategy defensively should be, “Hey, Tyrese, you know what? go out and get 40. As long as Pascal is not their leading scoreer, as long as Aaron Nesmith isn’t burning us from long range, as long as Miles Turner is not involved in taking too many shots, Tyrese go out and take 30 shots if you have to because when Tyrese has everybody else working, I feel like once he gets his teammates involved, that gets him going and then you’re down to the the worst of two worlds. I, you know, it’s funny like we bring up the this narrative that he somehow is overrated um in the in the eyes of his peers. I think what’s underrated for sure about Terry Hallebertton is the fact that he is such a good distributor. Like when he’s assisting on on plays and getting his his teammates looks and getting opportunities for them when he draws that extra attention, that’s when he’s at his best is when he’s able to kick out and guys knock down shots or he’s able to sort of pass it under the basket on those back cuts and and they can make they can sort of make the shots in close. Like those are the things that make him to me so effective is when he’s able to do all of that. And so to your point on Yeah. Like I I think that is probably a pretty solid strategy on him is if they try to take the others away and say, “All right, fine. If you if you want to try to beat us as as it’s almost like what you brought up with with Tyler Hero in the first round, right? Like you and what army? This time he has an army. But if you take the army away and you make him just have to do it and Tyrese Hallebertton puts it all on his shoulders to try to be the primary scorer and do too much on the offensive end, then maybe that’s a a solid strategy at least to start the series to to try to like lull them into a situation where they don’t want to be in and then you can maybe win win win the series and have an advantage in this one. So I I like that thought process from you. We’ll call that scheme the oneman band scheme. Okay. So we had you in what army with Tyler Hero. Now we’re going to make Tyrese Hallebertton a oneman band. You got slogans for everything. You just got, you know, you got to have something up your sleeve with these. But they that’s I think what their best strategy could be because the Pacers can shoot and the Pacers can score. They have multiple people who can score. And that’s something that’s a lot different than what the Cavs saw against Miami. So they’re going to have to take away the likes of the Seakums and the Miles Turners and even off the bench, the Benedict Matans of the world. Um, you know, Obie Toppin’s been giving them some goodness, too. Like Donovan talked about it. They play at a pace like that because they are also deep. I would still take the Cavs bench over theirs, but this is a thing where I think that there’s ultimate respect for the opponent and they’re going to have their hands full. This is going to be a different series and we’re going to get to the strategics of that, too, because five out is something that the Cavs have not really seen yet, too. I think along those lines, what are you anticipating adjustment wise from Kenny? And maybe it’s something that you have in your head as like a a lineup that he hasn’t tried or something he could try more. we talked about in the Miami series, they were able to go a lot smaller and he he that that pretty much worked throughout the entire series. So, there was no need to change things up. I don’t know how well that would work in in this series specifically, but what are you sort of anticipating that might look a little bit different? I’m not saying they’re not going to come out and play their game. I mean, their game has gotten them to this point, like right 64 wins, the a sweep in the first round of the playoffs. They’re going to be true to who they are, but what are some little quirks that you could see Kenny Atinson sort of using that you think could be an advantage in the series that we maybe didn’t see in the first round or maybe haven’t seen to this point in the season? Well, maybe you look at what your lineup was talking about, you know, like maybe because they go five out and they’re going a little bit smaller, maybe that they try a Dean Wade, Hunter, Mobly combo. Uh, I’m interested to see a lot of the talk this week has been about Jarrett in against a five out team. Can he keep up with the the guards and the quicker wings on the outside? Because he could be rendered not, you know, unaffective, but that is a big one. It’s also That is a big one. A true point though, like can he stay out there? Can he hang with those guys, but Kenny said Jarrett can also take advantage of that because you know that you can use him in the pick and roll game. he can be using his size inside because Miles Turner always hangs out on the perimeter a lot on both ends. Yeah. Um even though Miles is their rim protector, he’s also somebody that you can pull out. Uh so we’ll we’ll see what that way goes too. But uh I think that that’s interesting. And well it’s when you bring up Jared real quick too. I was going to say first of all we know he’s like the most unselfish guy there is on this team. I mean there’s others but like he he certainly does not mind when like there’s certain things that are called for in a game where he maybe isn’t part of it. And so yeah, like we saw late in the season at times Kenny went away from having Jared out there in the closing lineup. And that’s where I think you’re going to get some of these these, you know, lineup adjustments and some of the the the chess match of basketball is going to be late in games like, hey, what was working for us today? So I’m not saying Jarrett can’t be affected, but like you said, if Indiana if there’s a game where Indiana’s just like running him off the floor where it’s like, hey, he can’t keep up tonight. They might have he might have to get pulled out of that end lineup and have somebody else sort of swap in. And that’s okay because like I said, he’ll roll with it. And that’s the luxury that Kenny has is this this roster so deep that he can try different things and see different things and he might end the game with some different lineups than that don’t include Jarrett just because it might work better. So I that’s I think the key parts of the game where we’re going to see some of that the most. And I’m I’m definitely like you intrigued to see what types of things he pull he pulls out. And I think this also kind of segus into the next point about how big Evan Moi is gonna have to be because when I talk about Miles Turner being that major rim protector Yeah. for that team, pulling him out of the paint towards the perimeter to make sure that the drivers can get inside and and get, you know, attack the rim, get to the free throw line. I think that’s really important. So you look at Evan at the five. Now you got, you know, either DeAndre or Dean Way at the four. Maybe you have an Isaac in there. Um, I’m sure that Sam Merrell is still going to get a chance to see like what it looks like. Uh, so you you look at what Evan though brings to the table on both ends. He’s going to be playmaking. He’s going to be kind of being used in that dribble handoff mode. Um, and then defensively he’s going to have to he’s going to have to guard everybody really. He’s going to have to guard Hallebertton. He’s going to have to guard Pascal Seakum. And he’s also going to have to sure match up with Miles Turner in some senses. So, Evan’s going to be a huge piece of this. Yeah. and and and you know, Donovan talked about that at length yesterday about how big Evan Mobley is and also how where he’s getting to right now is exactly what is the difference between his number one seed in Utah and his number one seed here. Well, and that’s what we talked about at the top of the show is like how Evan in this series is going to stand out more so than he maybe even had to in the first series because of just how versatile he is. And he talked about that today. He knows he’s going to have a big responsibility with how this team plays and what he kind of brings to the table. He was locked in today, by the way, man. He he was extra work for 45 minutes. We were waiting to talk to him after Jared Allen walked in outside in the the hail and the rain coming through the side of the practice facility to come talk to us. And then meanwhile, Evans in there uh shirtless working out uh shooting threes and whatnot. So, it’s a pretty funny dynamic those two. Yeah, no doubt. Um yeah, so we’ll we’ll see what some of those things look like. Um, I do think this is going to be a series that tests Kenny’s, you know, coaching prowess more so than the first round did. Even though we thought the first round might have some some of that because it was spo the the Heat just didn’t have the dogs to kind of keep up with this team. And I I wasn’t terrified. I just say whenever you play the Heat, you always got to be mindful because the Heat are I I just feel like every time this team plays the Heat, it doesn’t ever go their way. But they clearly uh proved me wrong and that they didn’t prove me wrong because I still picked them to win at five. But um I you know I just there’s always a little bit of of of spo fear I guess to an extent. Uh but they put all that to bed. So that was the good news. We know that going into the series Darius Garland is still dealing with the toe injury that he suffered in the first series which made him miss the last two games of that one. Games three and four. He’s listed as questionable right now. Got a couple days before he actually would have to suit up. Do you think he’ll be ready yet for game one? And if he’s not, well, I guess that’s part two of the conversation, but if he’s not, like what is what do things look like for the Cavs? How how concerning is that for the start of the series if he’s not out there for this team? Well, I mean, day two of practice, didn’t see him out there. So, that’s one little sign. I think yesterday you saw him and he was doing individual work, but Kenny said that he had no contact. So, he went through everything, but no contact, making sure that that toe is okay. The great toe, as it is, it is called. It happened on a closeout. I thought it was less of a big deal than this, but clearly they’re being cautious about it. Kenny said he could have to deal with it for the rest of the playoffs. So, it’s just it seems like it’s like more of a pain tolerance thing where they’re trying to make sure it doesn’t become something bigger, right? Especially because Darius has always stopped go. You know, he’s somebody that that is on and off the way that his play style is. He is really shifty. He moves left to right. He moves up and down like and it’s very sudden movements. It’s planting and it’s, you know, all that stuff. So, that could be very painful for DG. So, it’s understandable why they’re taking this a little bit more seriously. Even if it isn’t an injury that that necessarily pops out to everybody, a toe if it’s your it’s your big toe. I mean, that that hurts. I’m going to guess and this is just a guess. I’m going to guess he tries to play Sunday. I think he tried to play game four in Miami and they still didn’t let him go. Well, and that made some sense because it was close out game. You were up three 0. You probably felt like you were fine without him. Um, like I I’d be hard I I I find it hard to believe that he’s not gonna try to play Sunday to start off a series on a good note. And then I just think it has to be one of those situations where Kenny is like constantly monitoring, right? And if he looks like he’s kind of out of whack or looks like it’s bothering him or whatever, get him out because, you know, you have a longer playoff run to sort of navigate through here potentially. Um, and you want to make sure that you can keep them as healthy as possible. So, I I think it’s just one of those things like you got to keep close attention to it, but I I like I I would imagine DG’s going to give it a go because that’s just who DG is. Like he wants to be out there and he knows he’s going to be judged like all these guys based on like what he does this time of year and he I’m sure was killing him. They didn’t get to play in game three and four. So, that’s just my guess on the situation. Um but I mean, I don’t know. Somebody else might feel differently about it. I feel differently about it. I actually think that I actually think he’s not going to play game one. I think they’re going to see game if they can hold up defensively the way they did the last couple games. Do they have another chance to to figure out different lineups, you know, without DG and knowing that you can bring him back a little bit later? And I think by that point it would have been like what a week and a half, two weeks since the last time he played a game. So it would give him a little bit more time to to to nurse that injury. Um I think you’re right, he’s going to try to give it a go. I just think that they might look at it and say, you know, let’s let’s give this a little bit longer of a heal. And the thing is, too, this isn’t something about them thinking DG is any less than. This is about them making sure that the fans might feel that way, but the team certainly does. Yeah. Which is a whole crazy conversation. We already got into that the last pod episode. So, let’s not get into it now. If you want to go back and watch though, you can find it on this channel. Cleveland Cavaliers on SI. You sure can. I was very emphatic that that the takes out there about DG are are very very wrong. And interestingly enough, Kenny Atinson comes out and says, you know, I think we’re better with our all-star point guard and that was his only thing. He’s like, he’s going to leave it at that. So, it’s it I don’t know. That’s the easiest way to sum it up. I should have just said that in the pop and that would have been good for for entertainment value. Would not have been. Um, so I I want to sort of shift ahead as again we’ll the DG part of this is going to continue to be a conversation. Um, something to monitor. We’ll see if he’s out there game one or not. Maybe to I know Kenny Atinson’s going to speak on Saturday. Uh you might watch this on Saturday, so we’ll know by then if Kenny has any further comment on it. I’m sure they’ll sort of list as like questionable up until game time and then they’ll make a game time decision. Um but we’ll we’ll obviously keep monitoring that. Let’s get more into the specifics of the series. We’ll make our predictions here coming up as well. But Spence, like what do you think is the biggest key for Cleveland to win this series against the Indiana Pacers that again they’re going to get challenged? Really high scoring offense. They like to run. Um what do you think is going to be the biggest key to sort of limiting that damage that they can provide and getting out of this series and advancing on to the Eastern Conference Finals? Rebounding, man. Because five out, this is your this is your go-to. I was gonna say rebounding because if they’re playing five out, that means that they don’t have many people in position and the Cavs have very strong rebounding players. Uh, and I think that they got better at it as the Heat series went on. But this is completely different schematically. They’re going to have to come out and pursue the ball. They’re not going to be able to ball watch. And then offensively, I just think you have to find a way to neutralize Miles Turner. And I’m going to have a clip coming out on that, too, um, on my my my ex account. But I I think that Miles is very very tough to beat inside because he’s so privy to being able to alter shots and block shots. They have to find a way to get him out of the paint or if they found a way to shoot the floaters, right? And you can’t get too deep against Miles because he’s going to make you pay. He’ll pin it against the ground. Uh pin it against the uh the board. So I I think that is a very big point of emphasis. And you know, it’s kind of cliche, but make shots. They’re going to have to make shots because the Pacers are a team that can keep up with them scoring wise. So, they got to continue to make shots. The rebounding is a good answer that I wish I would have used. Um, and it’s I mean, it’s it’s a great point that you mentioned it, too, because that was largely what I mean, I know you asked a lot of the questions about the rebounding, too, but you know, Evan talked about that on on Friday. JA talked about that on Friday, how important that is when you’re playing that five out like you mentioned being able to sort of do both things like close out but then also get in there to get the rebounds and they they they sort of know that’s been a point of emphasis for them and something that they need to continue to work on. So, um you know, we’ll see what that looks like. I agree with you. I think it got better as the Miami series went on, but we’ve been talking about the rebounding for several months now. So, I know it’s it’s something they’ve harped on, but certainly something that matters, especially this time of year and in a series like this with the way that Indiana plays. I can give you one if you want if I took yours. No, no, you didn’t take my I’m saying I wish I would have another one that I thought of too. My my key my biggest key I think is going to be the controlling the pace because you know Indiana wants to control the pace and the playoffs naturally slow down a little bit anyway. But really for the Cavaliers to kind of control and play at their tempo, do what they want to do. I think that’s going to set the tone. And part of doing what they do is like you said, we’re going to sort of share one here. making those shots, but especially making threes because this Indiana team has done a pretty good job throughout the season that the numbers suggest this of limiting the damage from three from their opponents. And so being a if if they can do that against the the Cavs, we know this is a team that when they’re making those threes, they are extremely hard to beat. That is when they’re at their best. And that’s going to be such an important part of their game and what they bring to the table in this one. So like they have to be able to knock down the shots on the outside. And part of that I think does sort of build off of being able to control the pace because if they’re doing what they want to do and they’re able to make those shots, they’re controlling the pace anyway. But yeah, I Indiana is going to give them a challenge on on the perimeter in terms of limiting that damage and they’re going to have to sort of overcome that and be able to knock those down and springing off of that. If you’re not making shots, get back in transition because that is really key because the Pacers, as we were talking about before, they’re fast. They make you pay in the open floor. Ja mentioned that. He mentioned that too, like that was something he said was they’re a really good transition team, one of the best in the NBA. And so they got to be on their their P’s and Q’s when it comes to slowing them down and make and again going back to controlling the pace of play. If you can slow them down in transition, that’d be huge. And that’s where I think somebody like Bobi comes into play because he’s somebody who can run the floor, be that rim protector, but also defend on the outside if it’s like a quick transition bucket. So um yeah, it’s those are the things that I’m kind of harped on. We both kind of shared the shot making one, but I think rebounding and controlling the pace are two other cool ones. You got to make sure that you don’t let them be comfortable for sure. That’s the other thing, too. Yeah. Like cuz if they can get into their offensive flow, then it’s really hard to stop them. And their best defenders, too. Nmith is going to give them a lot of problems. You’re going to see TJ McConnell when they go to him be an absolute pest picking up full court. So, look out for those guys. Andrew Nemhard is a really underrated player both ways. Uh this is going to be a battle. Yeah, it is. And speaking of that, Spence, this is the perfect segue for us to get out of here with our predictions for the series. We were talking to our buddy Ethan Sans earlier. He said, “If you’re not taking the Cavs in five or in seven and you’re splitting the difference, that you’re a coward.” Is basically what he said. He He It was something along those lines. He was like, “You got to be bullish. You either got to say Cavs in five or Cavs in seven.” Spence, what are you who are you taking in the series? How many games? And what’s your reasoning? Cavs and six. So, I’m splitting the difference. Chief Coward. Sorry. Hey, he he thinks a lot of things about me, but no, I I think that they get it done, but I feel like Indiana will win one home game and one away game. Okay. And I think one of them maybe it’ll be 3-1 Cavs. What’s the What is the series going to be after the first two here in Cleveland? Two. I think it’s two Cleveland. Okay. I think it’s two Cleveland because I think that’s going to be obviously that’s going to set the tone for the series, but I I was some people earlier were saying they think that they’re going to split at home. They think it’s going to be 1-1 going to Indiana, which I thought was kind of interesting. because then the pressure is on you, right? You go to their building a lot of times that game three, they’re energized by their home crowd. Role players play a little bit better. Um, so yeah, I I I I So I’m going to go different here because I already shared I shared the exact same prediction you did on another platform. No, he’s But I have But come on, we got to we got to make it fun here. We got to do some things differently. So I’ll follow the Ethan Sans playbook and say Cavs and five. I’m going to say Cavs and five. I I said Cavs and five against Miami. I’ll say Kasm 5 again here for this series. I I think that Cleveland now I will say the Darius Finan injury is there a little bit of a wrinkle that I you know you don’t account for in the playoffs start and so depending on what that looks like throughout the series like that could make it tougher where it does go six or seven games. Um because I do think like Kenny Atinson said they’re better with their all-star point guard. Um so missing him would be a big blow but I I think the Cavs will be able to navigate this and weather the storm at least a little bit without him. um especially feeding off that home crowd on Sunday when the series opens up. I think they’ll take the first two. I think Indiana will get one at home and they’ll come back to Cleveland and they’ll close it out in game five at home. Um and I I just feel like this team is rolling right now. I think they will find a way to control that pace. I think the shotmaking will continue and they’ll continue to get sparks off the bench from guys like DeAndre Hunter and and and Ty Jerome and, you know, limit the damage from what is a very good Indiana team offensively and they’ll be able to get out of here in five and and move on to the Eastern Conference Finals for whoever awaits them there. I’m not going to make any bold predictions about that yet, but I think we all know which way I’m leaning on the other side, too. Bold claims. Bold claims, Mr. German. Had to change it up a little bit for the sake of the podcast. But guys, we appreciate you hanging out with us for this mini episode of Courts Out with the Cavs on SI as we preview the conference semi-final matchup with the Indiana Pacers.
