Jayson Tatum on Game 1 Loss | Celtics Knicks Postgame Interview

Obviously, the big story is the the collapse after 75 55. Your offense completely disappeared. Your three-point volume went way way up. What What happened? What were you guys seeing on the floor that led to that many three-pointers? Uh, you know, probably some some times that we settled. I think for myself, uh, you know, I could have put more pressure on the rim. Uh but you know a lot of times we felt like we got some really really good looks and uh we just couldn’t convert. There’s always when we talk about three-point volume like this, there’s the balance between good looks or going good to great. Did you guys feel like you passed up good to great? Did you Were you guys maybe going for a knockout punch, going for a kill instead of continuing what you guys were successful with? Yeah. Uh, I mean, it’s like I said, it’s a lot of shots that we, uh, you know, we want certain guys taking and, you know, felt like we got some good looks. Um, obviously in hindsight, you know, if we could go back, we probably would drive the ball a little bit more. Um, because we missed a lot of shots tonight. Uh, but, you know, there’s a balance. Sometimes, you know, it’s a make or mislead. Um, and then there sometimes where, you know, you can get a better shot. Jason, usually when you cross match hunt, you can kind of get deep enough into the paint to like really draw over rotation. What were they able to do to kind of not get all the way shifted? And how good are their weak side guys at really closing out off of that? Uh, I mean, yeah, you got to give them credit. They’re really talented team on both ends of the floor, well connected. Um, you know, and they make it tough. So, you just got to be really intentional about what you’re trying to do and u you know who you’re trying to attack or what action we want in those moments. Jack, Jason, when you guys were going through that stretch where the threes aren’t falling and then they’re coming back and making all those shots, how much do you think that momentum improved their confidence? And how difficult is it for you guys or any team really to combat when a team, you know, gets going like that in the momentum? Uh, I mean, you know, those it’s a really good team. They It’s a game of runs. Uh, you know, they made some plays. They hit some shots. Uh, and, you know, we responded. We gave oursel a chance. Um, but, you know, we just got to we got to be better in in in the margins. Jason, your looks in particular, did you like your three-point looks? They left you open. They let you you get some. Um, and how are defenses defending you at the three? Are they are they giving you certain shots you you just don’t think you can pass up? Like how has kind of the defensive method against you this year, especially in the last few weeks, been in terms of shooting a three? Uh, I mean, yeah, I like a lot of the looks I took tonight. Um, some I settled. Uh, you know, just I got to be better in some of those moments. Um, you know, just be a little more intentional. And in terms of how do you not let your frustrating with lack of calls prevent you from attacking if you don’t think you’re going to get a call? Is that does that is that connected at all? No, that don’t connect. I mean, it’s the playoffs. Like, you know, we probably should just play without the refs. Like, we it’s how physical it is. Uh, so, you know, that don’t really cross cross my mind at all. Bobby, Drew had 16 points and really made life difficult for Brunson at the defensive end. Just what did you see from him overall and the impact he had in his return? Um, yeah, I mean Drew Drew was being Drew Holidayiday. Um, you know, the Swiss Army knife, the guy that does every a little bit of everything for us. Uh, you know, we I was excited, everybody was excited that uh, you know, he’s back and uh was able to to play tonight. J, you thought you said that times were were the two switches late in regulation some of those times? Um, and then when you get Brunson and I think it was Robinson on the other one, what are you looking to get there? What what are you trying to accomplish there in those matchups? Uh, yeah. I mean, just make the right read. Um, whatever that may be. Uh, you know, you know, a shot for me, a good shot for me might be different than for somebody else. Um, you know, and like I said, man, it’s a you can always go back and and look and see what you should have done differently. And that’s the case for, you know, a lot of times. And a lot of shots that felt good that just didn’t go in. Um, and you know, that’s part of it. Last question, Jason. Um the Celtics lead the MA uh lead the Knicks uh 20 points at the third quarter and this situation happened at the last game when you’re playing Magic like uh what are some differences when you feel when you’re playing those two teams? Uh I mean yeah it’s a new series, different team, different matchups. Uh you know we just focus on the Knicks right now. to um you know just get better and uh watch some filming and get ready for next game.

BOSTON — The Boston Celtics lost game 1 to the New York Knicks 108-105 in overtime on Monday night. The Celtics allowed a 20 Point lead slip away and let the Knicks steal game 1 in Boston.

Jayson Tatum had 23 Points and grabbed 16 Rebounds in the game 1 loss. Tatum spoke to the media following the loss and was asked how to not let frustration with lack of calls prevent him from attacking:

“It’s the playoffs. We probably should just play without the refs. That’s how physical it is.”
