BOMBSHELL: Would Utah Jazz SNAG Ace Bailey over Dylan Harper? Locke thinks it is reasonable.
If the Utah Jazz don’t get the number one pick and don’t get Cooper flag, it’ll be okay cuz Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey are great. Next on Locked on Jazzum. Thank you so much for making Locked on Jazz your first listen to the day. We are free and available on all podcasting apps and on YouTube. To the everydayers, you’re the greatest. Thanks so much for making this show what it is and has become. Here’s what we’ve got for you today. Lategame watch. Oh my gosh, how did Cleveland lose that game? They had five different chances where they could have won that game. We’ll break it down. Look at some other interesting little notes on that one. I’m at the stage now where I am watching the draft prospects. So, I’m taking some time to watch the draft prospects. Let me be perfectly clear. I will give a bunch of thoughts. I will give a bunch of opinions. But there are people in the media like Jonathan Giovon at ESPN and Danny Chu and Kyle Mann at the Ringer and other people across the country who watch these guys all year long. Raphael Barlo, James Barlo, Leaf Tulene of Locked on NBA Big Board who are far better than me at any of this. Here’s what I do. somewhat self-justifying and self because of limited time. I watch against other NBA prospects. So if you have there’s a player in the top 30 preferably, but top 60 in the draft who’s going up against another player in the top 60 in the draft, I will watch that matchup. Those are the matchups that matter to me. I don’t really care, no offense to CJ McCullum, what somebody did against Lehi or Lafayette or Rick Majaras’s old favorite Cardinal Stretch or Morgan State. I don’t care. I want to watch Illinois Ruters, which is what I just watched because Illinois has two players who will be drafted in the top 10 that are guards and Ruters has Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper. I will watch Texas play Oklahoma to watch Jeremiah Fierce against Trey Johnson. I will watch Baylor play Oklahoma because FJ Edgecom will play Jeremiah Fierce and hopefully they’ll match up every now and then. So that’s the way I watch it. Sometimes I think that’s actually good enough and that you can get really lured or confused or believe something when watching a player against an inferior opponent to believe how great they are. That’s so that’s how I do it. Let me say this. I’ve watched three I’ve watched two games now. I’ve already seen so much more talent in this year’s draft than last year. last year, the whole game, the whole time was finding little tiny pieces that might turn into something. The only things I saw all year that I thought were NBA skills were Ryan Dunn’s defense last year, Reed Shepard shooting, and Zach Edi and Donovan Mitchell’s Donovan and Donovan Cllingon’s size and Isaiah Collier’s burst. Those were my five, but they like were little. But like Reed Shepard was too small and Ryan Dunn couldn’t shoot and Isaiah Collier couldn’t shoot. But they had these other little things and the big guys couldn’t move. Was terrible draft. Probably going to go down as one of the worst drafts in NBA history. This is different. I can feel it already because Will Riley out of Illinois, who probably is going to be on the board at 21st, frankly, did more things that I were impressive than any than anything I actually saw out of Cody Williams last year. And I liked Cody Williams by the time the draft came because you were trying to piece together things to make yourself believe that there was something there. But I saw more out of Will Riley in some ways, who’s a 19-year-old youngster and had some had something to his game than I saw in almost most of the guys I watched last year. But let’s get to the important thing of the day. I watched Dylan Harper and I watched Ace Bailey and I love them both. And here’s my strong take of the day. I might be the only one who believes this, but there is a part of me that would take Ace Bailey over Dylan Harper. Dylan Harper is outstanding and ready and mature and there, but I might just have to take 610 over 66. Ace Bailey at 610 with the potential he shows to me, if it all comes together, that’s something really special. Dylan Harper’s fabulous, but I might have to take 610 over 66. Let’s start with Dylan Harper. If the Jazz get the second pick of the draft, everyone in the world says you take Dylan Harper, except for I just said maybe not. I would really have to consider taking Ace Bailey. We’ll get to that in a moment. But Dylan Harper is 66. He’s in total control. The only thing that worries me about Dylan Harper is he looks like he has a 29year-old game at 19. And you wonder if he’s just so schooled with his dad being a former NBA player. He’s just so prepared. He’s just so much beyond everyone coaching and teaching wise that when he gets to the NBA, it’ll equalize. But he’s got the size. He’s got the hostage dribble. He’s playing the game at his pace. He’s the puppeteer moving everyone around. Every He is in control of everything that’s taking place. He reminds me, and let me take a pause and give credit to a bunch of people out there that are doing draft stuff. Namely, I’ll give is that we have a tendency to always comp everyone to like the greatest player you could imagine. Now, we are talking about the first, second, and third picks of the draft. So, you probably should be comping them. You know, Cooper Flag is being comped now most to Jason Tatum. Okay? And I’m about to do the opposite. I’m about to comp both Ace Bailey and K and Dylan Harper to really great players. And maybe frankly at one, two, and three in the draft, that is their comp. If you get drafted one, two, and three in the draft, there’s a real chance you’re going to the Hall of Fame. Dylan Harper to me is Kate Cunningham. He reminds me of exactly what we thought of Kate Cunningham when Kate Cunningham came out of Oklahoma State. 66, total control, great, good shooter, all this, no explosion. And what’s interesting on Kate Cunningham is he’s really not, as we talked about throughout our late game watches in the Detroit, New York series, he’s not a very good isolation player and he’s not a very good rim finisher. Dylan Harper is an incredible elite collegiate rim finisher. We’ll see whether or not that translates. He does not have awesome elevation. He does not burst like a Jaylen Green with incredible pizzazz, but he has all the skills you want. You know, using Jaylen Green as an example, what Dylan Harper has that I love is Brandon Roy. So, Jaylen Green is I was actually with a buddy this weekend. We were watching the Houston Golden State game and he was like, “What do you think of Jaylen Green?” And Jayen Green made a play. And I was like, “Five guys in the world can do that.” And that’s what I think of Jaylen Green. Jaylen Green has the skills that five players in the world have. But until just recently on Jaylen Green, everything’s been at full speed all the time. And this league is about changing speeds. Brandon Roy came in the league out of the University of Washington and he played slow and calm and then he burst on you and somehow he got by you every single time with his big body even though he didn’t have electrifying Jaylen Greenesque athleticism. That’s what Dylan Harper has. The Dylan Harper has this hesitation. Slow down. Control the speed of the game. And then I’m going to burst by you. I’m going to come off the pick, hold it in its gap, totally in control. You’re on my back hip. I’m big enough. You can’t do anything about it. And then I’m going to go and reads the spaces and the gaps and all those plays marvelously. Marvelously. So, his burst isn’t this electrifying bam, but it is out of start and stop and hesitation and this and that. He can really shoot it. He plays hard. Both Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper play hard. It is the most satisfying thing to watch. I saw no red I’ve watched two games. I will continue to watch. I’ve not finished both of them. I will watch more both of them and I’ll watch more. I saw no red flags on either of them. I watched early games. I watched the Illinois game and I watched the Alabama game. And maybe as the year went on, those red flags emerged. I actually don’t care. I kind of feel like if you’re the number two and number three picks of a draft, a team that’s not winning much, at some point it’s actually smart to get into self-preservation, right? We’re not talking about $5 and $10. We’re talking about a hundred million. I would get into self-preservation, too. And if they did, if we do, if I do watch them in the second half of the season, they’re a little bit self-preservation. I actually think that’s fine. But Dylan Harper has all of it. He has all of it. He’s ready. He’ll start day one. He’ll play as many games as you need him to play. He’ll be in control. He won’t shoot well because rookies don’t shoot well their first year. But he’s in he’s to he’s completely established and ready and mature and 29 and 19year-old body’s game. Absolutely 100%. And I still might take Ace Bailey instead. That’s next on Locked on Jazz. Thanks so much for making Lockdown Jazz your first listen of the day. everydayers out there. Appreciate you immensely. So, if you’re wondering, my voice sounds a little funky. The reason is I actually have already recorded this show once today. Um, I did this whole show and then for whatever reason, the audio didn’t work. My computer I think is dying a little bit. Time to call my good friend Zach Lambert. Um, and so I’m on and then I actually started a second take and had no energy and no juice. So, this is take three of this show today. Hopefully we’re pulling it off. All right. Um the Ace Bailey. So on the second play of the game against Alabama, Ace Bailey grabs a rebound and goes 94 feet coast to coast with a dribble at 610 and finishes on the other side. against Illinois. Ace Bailey runs pick and rolls. He’s 610 running pick and rolls. He can shoot it pretty well. Not brilliant, not like world, but he’s good. There’s some discussion, rightfully so. He’s a little Bambi-esque. He’s a big huge tall long baby deer giraffe that’s body is probably not all put together yet at 610, 200 lb and 19 years old. and he gets knocked off and his thing and I think the Big 10 got into him pressure-wise and he started turning the ball over and things like that as the year went on. You could kind of that’s what I’ve read and what you could see. Yeah, I’m not sure that that bothers me. I mean, I think it’s reasonable to be 19 years old, 610, 210, 200 lb and be a baby giraffe and be a little Bambi like Gumby, right? Like, yeah, his body seems to be going in every direction and like, yeah, when he gets stronger and he builds some core and he goes through some real real weight training, but the dude’s 610 and went coast to coast on a dribble. The dude’s 610 and can dribble. The dude’s 610 and played a pick and roll. And I think the most important thing that’s going to happen in the NBA in the next few years is secondary rim defense. And what I mean by this is it’s nice to have the Rudy Go Bears and the Jared Allens, but you’re watching in the playoffs. They do get pulled out. The Evan Mobleyes s defender who just won defensive player of the year is probably the future. We’re going to have every team have five guys who can shoot threes. And we’re going to have every guy on the floor being able to shoot 36% or better from threes here pretty soon. Unless we have a massive rule change in the league. But three-point shooting percentage continues to go up. Everything continues to get better. More threes are being shot. and you’re going to have to guard huge amounts of space. And so you might have your primary rim defender, but they’re going to get pulled out. And you’re going to need a secondary rim defender. Taylor Hendricks, if he gets healthy, is going to be able to do this, too. And Ace Bailey led the team in blocks, can be a secondary rim defender, because he can move. This is why I might have to go 610 over 66. Dylan Harper’s a better player right now, but I’m not sure who I think’s a better player in five years. And if it all comes together, if Ace Bailey gets a little bit more strength with that dribble and a pull up mid-range game and he can shoot the three and woo, there’s a lot of hands there. Honestly, I think he might be Chris Bosch. I know his downside is he’s Jabari Smith. I give credit to Leaf Tulene on NBA draft NBA big board who was talking about Jabari Smith when he was supposed to be the number one pick of the draft said I just don’t see him ever being a primary scorer primary go-to guy number one option he slid on draft day to three I think it was maybe four three and I think that’s turned out to be right I’m not sure Houston is super ecstatic with Jabari Smith in 15 minutes a night in the playoffs with that said that’s the downside is that Ace Bailey is a bonafide three-point good enough three-point shooter and a really good defender and can play and be a secondary rim defender. Might even be a really good defender. Like he can really move. He plays hard, too. This is the same the thing I saw in both these guys that I just loved is they both played hard. There’s You just the plays that he made the wow plays you just don’t see. So like is he going to develop an off the-bounce pullup jumper? Yeah, maybe. That’s can play mid-range and score when he needs to. Maybe in a way that at 610 other guys can’t. I I don’t shut the door on this. I know that there’s actually always people have VJ Edgecomb at three and other people have pushed Bailey and there supposedly was this big separation between Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey and my initial reaction having watched no college basketball year knowing nothing compared to most of the people out there that watch this all the time is that we are overthinking this when the year started it was a question of Ace Bailey or Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey was two and Dylan Harper was three and then Harper had this amazing college year and Bailey slid and I don’t give a crap what they did in college. I want to know what they’re going to do in the NBA. And I’m not convinced that Ace Bailey is not a better pick than Dylan Harper. All right, let me flip it for a second. Illinois was the one of the games I watched. This kid, Will Riley, is really interesting to me. He’s on the ringer board at like 24. I need to get the NBA draft. I need to get our locked on NBA big board. Um, and what their numbers are. Um, Riley’s at 25. He’s 681 195. I actually really liked him. Like he kind of had bursts and moments and there’s something to him. I I’m gonna go back and watch more of him, but I was impressed. I was not impressed by Casper Yokuchunis Yakunis. Uh I really didn’t see it. I know he’s supposed to be the 66 playmaker. He was gunning it from all over the floor and not making any shots. I think he had a particularly bad game against Ruckers, but I also think that’s interesting to me that he had a particularly bad game against a bunch of really good athletes. Um, he only shot 32% from three for the season, which the game I watched, the ball didn’t go in a lot. I did not see an isolation burst where I saw him beating people off the bounce. I saw a college player who has the ball in his hands a lot who did not show me a lot of elite wow skills and that would make me super nervous if that was a top 10 pick for me. I know there were times when he was up at four on people’s boards. I’m not sure I see that. I’ll have to watch more. But that to me was a little bit of a question mark there. We lottery next. We late game watch as well on how the possibly Cleveland lost to Indiana. The good news is when we lottery if we go one, two or three I think we got something awesome on Monday or next on Locked on Jazz. Thanks so much for tuning in to Locked on Jazz today, making your first listen. hopefully getting through this with me on this take three of the program. I believe my as the president of lockdown I have all sorts of chat things going on while I’m doing a show and I believe it is the Utah Mammoth has been announced officially and is officially out that we are it is now the Utah Mammoth. Oh, that’s pretty cool. I just saw the first jersey. That’s pretty awesome. By the way, um the um the hockey club had lottery luck and I’m all into the hockey team and I’m all for them. Doing great and I’m rooting for them every day and if they stole our lottery luck, I’m really pissed. That’s not okay. Wow, that logo looks really cool. Those uniforms are awesome. The mammoth is awesome. It’s gonna be great. All right, let’s do it. Let’s do a little Let’s do a little lottery. We didn’t do it yesterday. Here we go. The way this works, remember a few fun things on the lottery this year. If two teams behind Philadelphia at five jump and Philadelphia drops to seven or eight, drops Philadelphia drops to seven. Oklahoma City gets the pick. So, that’s a disaster. um because we don’t want to see that. All right, here we go. The first three we want to have be San Antonio, Atlanta, and Chicago. Then I’ll lead us through the rest of it. The lottery is underway. And the 14th pick is San Antonio. We want 13 to be Atlanta. It is. We want 12 to be Chicago. It is. We want 11 to be Dallas. It is. We want 10 to be Portland. It is. We want nine to be Houston. It is. We want eight to be San Antonio. Dear God, no. Yes, they’re number seven, Toronto. Everything going on form. Six to be Brooklyn. It is. Everything’s on form. Philadelphia at five. No. The Pelicans slide to five. Philadelphia goes up. Number four, the Jazz get the fourth pick. Washington three, Hornets two. Philadelphia gets Cooper Flag with the number one pick of the draft. And suddenly Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxi, Paul George, and Cooper Flag are all on the same team. And the Jazz draft fourth and we hope desperately, having not watched any of the other players that someone does something stupid and leaves Ace Bailey for the fourth pick for us since I’ve decided I love Ace Bailey, I’ll keep watching more of him. Uh, all right. Um, I had one other thing I want to keep. One thing we’re going to look at this week is is there something going on in the playoffs where we’re having these particularly bad outlying three-point shooting nights like Minnesota had last night. Feels like Boston just had one, Minnesota just had one. What’s going on that we’re having these incredible outlying three-point shooting bad nights? All right, lateg game watch last night. Cleveland, Indiana, stunner. Indiana’s up 20. Donovan was incredible in this game and then unfortunately in the final like minute and a half made a bunch of really poor plays. Um the some interesting things on this one. one, Rick Carla had Nemhardt running the offense a good deal with Miles Turner and pick and rolls and Tyresese Hallebertton playing off the ball showing some versatility there and that must be why Nehart’s not a particularly good shooter. Um, Okora was on Hallebertton, but that was an interesting one that Indiana was going to a good deal late. Donovan was really superhuman without Garland, without Moley, without Hunter, Donovan was just out of this world. Indiana wins this game despite going kind of against contrary three when to shoot threes and when to shoot twos. Donovan makes a game-winning pass. Incredible. Splits a double team backhanded right-hand pass to Max Truce for a three. That should have won the game. It would have been the ultimate of his performance. 117 110. They’re up with 106 left. Cleveland now makes five mistakes in the next minute and 6 seconds. If they had not made if they had done one of these things correctly, they win the game with 103 left, they no one gets available to inbound. No one even comes back for it. They have to call a timeout. It’s like they weren’t ready to inbound the ball after a made basket. Donovan didn’t make any effort. He was just pointing. Nobody did anything. So, they have to use a timeout. Then it’s 119 112. And I I said Donovan makes mistakes. He was amazing. But Aaron Nesmith makes one of the most incredible plays. He’s outside the three-point arc waiting on the free throw on the second free throw by Seakkum. Donovan standing next to him. Doesn’t screen him out at all. Kind of gra tries to grab him. And then Nith flies in, dunks it. Donovan actually gets crunched underneath it and it makes it 119 114. That game is over if Cleveland gets that rebound. Then they inbounded Donovan and they inbound it to him on the sideline when he’s pinned. He swings through on knee Smith and gets an offensive foul called to him. Then Hallebertton lays it up and in. And then again they can’t get it inbounds and they don’t seem to have any plan. They have to bury another timeout to get it inbound. Then they throw the inbound away where they So there’s a new school of thought on inbounds that you put two guys in the front court and you put two guys in the back court. Eric Sper was kind of the first to do this. We talked about this a lot of late game watch this year. If you’ve been listening to the show all year, it’s pretty interesting. So, two guys in the front court, two guys in the back court. The two guys in the front court give these two guys in the back court space to get open, but they also allow you to bring one guy to the ball if you need to, right? You can run a little action with them and one guy’s coming to the ball. They had four guys in the back court inbounding or four guys in the front court inbounding in the front court. Two of them went to the back court to create space and then Donovan comes to the ball. He’s not available and the other guy was just standing still and Max Struce really has no place to throw it and throws it away. Didn’t have a did not have a good like outlet, second option, anything. I think Strus just got kind of lobbs up there. And because they didn’t inbound the ball on either of those other two times out of the timeouts, they don’t have another timeout to bury or to use to get out of it. So they really are screwed. Like this is just now compounding on them. So they throw it over. Then Hallebertton gets fouled. And then Hallebertton gets his own free throw miss, walks back out, hits the three to win it. So they inbound the ball the first time. If Donovan screens out, if Donovan’s offensive foul doesn’t happen, if they get it in the next time, if they grab the offensive rebound, if they don’t throw the six different things, if they do one of them right, they win that game. Few interesting notes on these two games as we kind of like I like to look at these notes on Indiana Cleveland. Shot quality of the two teams is the exact same in this game. Um, Cleveland went shot 28% from three, 11 of 39. another bad shooting three-point game. The Indiana threw 308 passes. They are really moving it. The one question on Cleveland coming in is how would they do on dribble drive defense? They’re not great in this series. Now Garland’s not playing and that was a lot of the question there. Um Cleveland ran almost a 100 pick and rolls in this game. They are literally just running pick and roll. They also may not have a lot else. And Cleveland, probably because Donovan’s tired, is playing almost entirely in the half court. The roll game to Jared Allen is not yielding anything for Cleveland, which is interesting. Ty Jerome had ran 20 pick and rolls with Jared Allen 6 points. You think they missed Darius Garland? I still think Cleveland can win this series if they get healthy. That last number is the big one right there. Ty Jerome pick and roll with Jared Allen 6 points. Garland and Jared Allen. One of the best combos in the NBA. Minnesota goes five of 29 from three. But the biggest one to me in this game is Minnesota only gets 29 threes and only gets 19 rim shots. Minnesota ends up taking 27 floaters and 11 long twos. 40 38 40 nonrestricted area twos. That’s their shot distribution got completely blown up by Golden State’s defense. Golden State threw 358 passes in this game. Minnesota threw 269. Passes don’t yield. They just tell you how someone’s playing. The other one that’s interesting is this. Without Steph Curry, Golden State’s isolation game against Minnesota’s defense, which is supposed to be so vaunted, was absolutely outstanding. They are 1.3 points per isolation. They had zero pick and roll game, which they never did. Minnesota on the other hand had very little pick and roll game also probably because of Draymond. Their best pick and roll game was Mike Connley and Rudy Goar but that’s not exactly where they want to go. So that will be interesting to see how that plays out without Steph Curry. I can’t imagine Golden State can win that series. First time ever in NBA history that all four road teams won the first games of the conference finals. Maybe the best two game day sequence in NBA history of quality of finishes and games and drama. Really incredible. That is Locked on Jazz today. I’ll watch some guys on the flight to Chicago. I'm so sick of "comps". They're so shortsighted and inaccurate. Who was Chris Bosh before he was Chris Bosh?
This draft is Cooper and Dylan according to most pundits. After that it's a crap shoot.
The team workouts are going to be huge for Edgecomb. He was not a great shooter early in the year. But dramatcally improved. Also how tall is he, people say he is actually 6'3", but he has more athletic ability than Donavan Mitchell who is under 6'2". We would take Mitchell at if he was available today.
Welcome David Locke to the Ace Bailey hype train. I truly do believe for the Jazz specifically Cooper Flagg and Ace Bailey should be the priority then Dylan Harper. Even though i think Dylan is elite, i think there are other good PGs in the draft especially when we have 4 picks and isaiah collier.
