The Sacramento Kings Are Off to a Strong Start with Their New Staff! | Locked On Kings

The Sacramento Kings are off to a really strong start putting together their new coaching and front office staffs. On today’s show, we’ll run through the names that are reportedly joining Doug Christie and Scott Perry here in Sacramento. Some familiar names, some names that have been around the NBA a long time. It’s all right here on Locked on Kings. You are Locked on Kings, your daily Sacramento Kings podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. And now, ladies and gentlemen, it is that time. Time for another episode of Locked on Kings. Hello and welcome into Lockdown Kings, your podcast hub for Sacramento Kings coverage all season and offseason long. My name is Matt George. I have the privilege of being your host here. I’m a Sacramento sports anchor and reporter for ABC 10 News. And first and foremost, I want to uh apologize for the lack of uploads or the inconsistent uploads over the last week or so. Certainly not normal to our Locked on Kings content schedule. I’m taking a bit of a break. I’m taking a week off of my work duties at ABC10 just chilling kind of re uh recovering a little bit. It was been it’s been a crazy season to say the absolutely. So I hope you don’t mind the frequency of lockdown kings being a little bit on the lower end to start this season. At the end of the podcast, I’ll talk a little bit more about what’s coming, including still the fansonly week that I want to do here on Locked on Kings, where you, the listeners, take over uh the the podcast, and I’ll speak to a number of Sacramento Kings fans just about this season, their optimism or pessimism for the future of the team. That’s all coming uh later on in the show and later on in the offseason. But I want to make sure you understand that this is not how the offseason is going to be. One upload every handful of days, right? We’ll get back to our normal schedule as things start to pick up again. Um, but I hope you enjoyed my most recent episode, which was my interview uh with Doug Christie after his press conference inside the Kings practice facility. If you missed that, I spoke with him about 10 minutes. I primarily prioritized his relationship with Scott Perry. Like that was the main thing that I took away from their press conference that I wanted to talk about a lot. I understand you might want to get more into the X’s and O’s of basketball, how the Sacramento Kings are going to play, what this roster is going to look like, but in reality on a day like that, you’re not going to get much of that because they’ve barely started, right? They can talk to you about hypothetical things that they may or may not want to do, but they don’t want to get too far ahead of themselves. What they can talk about is what they’ve already experienced, which is working together, the conversations that they’ve had that ultimately got them to the point where Scott Perry hired Doug Christie as his head coach going forward. So, uh, we’ll talk more about their relationship and then, of course, we’ll get into the basketball side of things. We’re already going to dive into some of the basketball side of things today, uh, with the staffs that they’re put putting together, but go and check out that interview if you have missed it. But, let’s start with Doug Christiey’s coaching staff because we’ve had a lot of reports. Now, all of this is reportbased, right? Nothing has been officially announced yet, but understand that if there are reports coming out from the incredible sources like Sam Aik and Sean Cunningham and and others that I’ll reference here on the podcast here today, they’re pretty credible. It means that it’s more than more than likely going to happen, right? It just hasn’t been set in stone yet. But let’s talk about Doug Christiey’s coaching staff because we have three names in particular that we know are or reportedly going to be joining Doug here in Sacramento. One is actually a carryover from the last staff. Leandro Barbosa is reportedly staying with Doug Christie here. And and I do think that even with last season’s struggles, having some familiarity and carryover from last season is is a good thing, right? having someone who has been there in the trenches with Doug, who knows what Doug went through, right, and who was right there with him going through it. I think it’s fair to say that the the riding the wave, the roller coaster of the the 51 games, I think it was that Doug Christie was the the interim head coach of the Kings, riding that wave with him, I’m sure there was trust built and a relationship strengthened through that process between Doug Christie and Leandro Barbosa. Having someone that you can trust wholeheartedly on your roster or on your bench more than you need more than just one summon and we’ll get to that when we talk about Bobby Jackson, but having someone like that that went through that fire with you that there’s a there’s a b there’s a you’re battle tested together, right? I think that’s that’s important to have. It’s unclear specifically if Barbosa will have a more prominent coaching role with Doug, if he’ll be front of the bench or more back of the bench. He was very player development focused when he was brought in as part of Mike Brown’s staff. He he and Doug were more player developmentoriented. Doug actually had more responsibilities than LB did. Doug had a lot of rotational responsibilities on on Mike Brown’s staff. So, I’m I imagine we’re going to see LB taking on some sort of advanced responsibility. I don’t think he’ll be anywhere near like a lead assistant role. Um, but seeing LB back I think is is really really solid. The the thing that we’ve been talking about a lot though when it comes to Doug Christiey’s coaching staff is Doug’s lack of experience, right? And that’s not to say that he doesn’t know basketball. That’s that’s silly. That’s foolish. Doug is is a genius when it comes to the game of basketball. But when it comes to coaching the game of basketball, Doug might lack expertise. I think we saw at times, especially in the playing game, like Doug struggles at times with certain X’s and O’s, certain concepts, certain strategies, right? He lacks that experience. He’s a brilliant motivator. The players love him, but maybe there are other areas that he has weaknesses. We all have weaknesses. So, we’ve talked about the need for the Kings and for Doug to bring in a lead assistant that he can lean on. Like, Jriano is gone. Jay Triano is is is not returning. Doug leaned heavily on Jay and Jay being the professional that he is wrote it out with Doug and helped Doug as much as he could over the remainder of last season with after Doug uh Mike Brown was fired and Luke L departed. Right. But Doug needs his own J Triano. Doug needs his own established veteran coach that he can lean on that he chooses to bring in that he has some sort of relationship or familiarity with. So, according to significant reports, the Kings are targeting and more specifically are pretty much heavily favored to bring in Mike Woodson as a lead assistant to Doug Christie. Now, this is pretty significant. If you’re not familiar with Mike Woodson, he has been around the NBA for a very long time. He’s most recently he was the head coach of actually the uh at the University of Indiana, the Indiana Hooers. He he spent four seasons as their head coach. Coached them to an 82 and 53 record. They made the NCAA national tournament twice. Right now, we’re focusing more on the NBA things, but but he was leading Indiana. Had success in Indiana very very recently. He has 22 years of NBA coaching experience to some capacity. That’s both as a head coach and as an assistant coach. But let’s talk about his head coach stints. He’s had two of them. He was the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks from 2004 to 2010. He posted a 419 win percentage, not the best, below 500, 206 and 286 record, but he made the playoffs three out of those six years. Granted, it’s in the Eastern Conference, not in the Western Conference. He was the head coach the the last two years that he was head coach of Atlanta, those teams were really, really good. Especially the final year where remember that Hawks team that was 53 and 29, that super good Hawks team that won the East. He was the head coach of that team. They ultimately flamed out in the playoffs. I think they they were eliminated in the second round. So, he didn’t have that result necessarily, but we’ll get there, right? The Kings will get there. They’ll get to dealing with the disappointment of winning 53 games and losing in the second round of the playoffs. We’re not even close to there yet. So, not the most successful overall stint in Atlanta, but helped turn the Hawks into a a struggling team, into the best team in the East, at least during the regular season. Then he became the head coach of the New York Knicks after he was fired in Atlanta. He was the assistant coach in New York and then very quickly took over as the head coach of the New York Knicks in the uh from the 2011 2012 season to the 2013 2014 season. He had a lot of success in New York. Posted a 580 win percentage, meaning he won 58% of his games, 109 wins, a 70 and to 79 loss record. He in in the three seasons that he was there, he made the playoffs two times. In the mo his final season in New York, the 2013 2014 season, the Knicks went 37 and 45. They were very disappointing that year. They missed the playoffs. He was fired after that. Now, keep in mind, this was all in New York before Scott Perry was there. So, there’s not the, oh, Scott Perry and Mike Woodson, they probably know each other. Well, they do from NBA circles, but Mike Woodson wasn’t Scott Perry’s head coach when they were in New York. Scott Perry came after that. But regardless of Mike’s experience, Woodson brings a ton of or his past experiences, Woodson brings a ton of that experience to Doug Christiey’s staff that he can lean on. And I was doing some research and reading some articles and just trying to figure out like, hey, what are some like identity traits of Mike Woodson as a coach and the three most consistent ones that I found were very encouraging when it comes to fitting into Scott Perry and Doug Christiey’s vision. Here are the three most consistent. I found them multiple times over multiple different articles and and and things of that nature. Here are the three most consistent traits that I found brought up about Mike Woodson. One, accountability. This is a word and a trait we’ve directly heard from Scott Perry as to one of the seven identity traits that he wants here in Sacramento. So, that fits perfectly. Number two, shared responsibility. Saw this brought up a couple of times. It’s kind of a broad term for essentially while there are specialists and guys who excel in certain areas offensively, defensively uh as as point guards or floor generals or rim protectors, whatever. Everybody shares the responsibility though of executing the game plan of being on the same page, right? They they they have their job and they emphasize that job and they do that job correctly and and share that responsibility for the team. So, there’s that. And then the final one, which is the main thing, and I saw this multiple times when it comes to Mike Woodson’s offense, the a share the ball mentality, right? Mike has a very like modern view of the offense. And this is the main area that I feel that Mike is going to be of the the biggest help to Doug Christie. Right? If I were to forecast or guess like what’s Mike Woodson’s responsibility primarily going to be here in Sacramento, I think it’s going to be with the offense, right? Not that Doug Christie isn’t doesn’t have a good grasp on the offense or anything like that, please. He was a piece of the greatest show on court offensively that loved to share and move the basketball, but Doug we know is always been a very defensive minded, defensive first kind of guy. And the Kings have a very defensive first identity or they want to be known for how they play on the defensive end of the floor. That doesn’t mean you can’t not prioritize offense and can’t not score, right? So Mike, I believe, will come in and be to put it like into football terms, the offensive coordinator for the Kings. The same way Jay Triano was responsible for the offense under Mike Brown and helping Doug Christie. That’s what Mike Woodson is going to be, I believe, here in Sacramento. Again, we haven’t talked to him yet. We don’t know the specifics yet. There hasn’t been an official announcement yet, but if I were guessing, Mike Woodson and his offense and moving the basketball and and and and that style that he has, that strength that he has is what the Kings are really going to heavily lean on in addition to his experience with his time here in Sacramento. But there’s another coach, another name that we’ve been talking about that’s been floated about really since the idea of Doug Christie being the head coach of the Sacramento Kings was a thing. That’s Bobby Jackson. We’ll talk about Bobby plus Scott Perry’s new assistant GM. That’s all still to come here on Locked on Kings. As expected and first reported by KC3’s now Sean Cunningham, Bobby Jackson is expected to return to Sacramento and be a part of Doug Christiey’s coaching staff. Now, I think there are going to be some people that naturally roll their eyes and go, “Here we go. It’s just a continuation of the early 2000 Kings. They just keep doing this trend. Here’s another one. When’s Brad Miller joining the staff? Right. I kind of understand that to some extent, but this this goes beyond that. Like, don’t don’t use that easy kind of lowhanging fruit to disregard how good of a coach Bobby Jackson is because he’s more than paid his dues to work himself to this spot. Bobby has spent seven seasons as an assistant coach in the NBA, some here in Sacramento, most recently the last two seasons in a prominent assistant coaching role with Nick Nurse in Philadelphia with the 76ers. Of course, he had tons of success here as the head coach of the Stockton Kings before taking that lead assistant job in Philly. And I think he’s ready for a prominent role with Doug. Now, I don’t think it’ll be as prominent as Mike Woodson necessarily, but Bobby is someone that Doug knows that he can trust. Bobby is someone who in a different sense has been through the trenches with Doug, right, as players. So, there’s a very established understanding, very similar to what I talked about with Leandro Barbosa and how there’s a trust between the two because Doug and LB went through the fire of last season together. Well, Doug and and and Doug Bobby Jackson have gone through war together as basketball players, as NBA players here uh in Sacramento. So, there’s definitely going to be I I expect Bobby Jackson to have a pretty significant responsibility here in Sacramento. I don’t know if it’ll be to the coordinator status of like a Mike Woodson, but Bobby should be a front of the bench coach. He will be someone for Doug Christie to trust in and heavily lean on. And I think Bobb’s ready for this, right? He was ready for his opportunity that he got in Philadelphia with Nick Nurse. And regardless of of how things have played out there in Philly, that certainly had nothing to do with Bobby Jackson. So don’t use the disaster of the season that Philly just had as a reason to undermine Bobby. It’s silly. It’s foolish. Has everything to do with Joel Embiid’s health and bad decisions by the front office. And if anything is on the coach, it’s on Nick Nurse. Certainly not Bobby Jackson or Nick’s coaching staff. So don’t let that cloud your judgment any kind of way. Bobby has earned this opportunity. He’s very very of course familiar with Sacramento, this Kings team, this organization. He gives Doug Christie quite literally a brother. Well, you know what I mean. Basically a brother to to to work with every single day uh on that coaching staff. So, I think this is a completely expected, nothing surprising, but very, very good hire for Doug Christie. So, those are the names that we know so far when it comes to Doug Christiey’s coaching staff. But what about the front office staff? Now, from what I understand, I have not been there. I have not seen it. Uh, I did not attend the first round of NBA draft workouts that the Kings held earlier this week because I’ve been taking my week off and apparently a lot of the old regime of the Kings front office was there. Now, I’m not talking about massive decision makers like we know Monty McNair and those guy and West will cox and those main guys are gone, but we’re talking about guys that were in the scouting department, guys that were in the analytics department. It’s not that Scott Perry is completely taking the old regime and plugging it in. He’s going to add his own guys, his own names, but it’s not completely unheard of to come in and and help or or or or it’s like a boss taking over a manager taking over a staff. He doesn’t just completely clean house and hire his complete own crew. You inherit that former workforce and try and identify guys that you want to work with, guys that you can’t work with, guys that you agree with. So, it sounds like Perry at the very least is giving a good portion of this front office staff opportunity to continue in their roles, which I think is a good thing, but he does need a main guy. He does need a lead assistant GM. Well, he’s gone out and brought in, according to reports, BJ Armstrong. This was first reported by Shams Shirania of uh ESPN. BJ Armstrong as his assistant general manager. Now, first off, yay that Scott Perry hired his own guy, the guy that he wanted and not a guy that was forced upon him by ownership because that person lost the job to Scott Perry. He’s a former NBA guard, including an NBA champion. He was in the back court next to Michael Jordan. So, if that helps and does anything for you, he has that NBA experience. Most recently, he’s worked as an agent for players since 2006. Worked for the same group that was the agent to like Derek Rose and and and and names like that. U so has that agent background which is more than a good thing when working as a front office and how specifically and intensely you work with agents. He is also shout out podcast hosts. He’s a co-host of the Hoop Genius podcast or was. I had doubt that’s going to continue now that he has his new role. But hey, see podcasters, we can we can do our thing too. Podcasta podcasters can you don’t want me as your general manager, assistant general manager, coach, or anything remotely to do with the organization. But shout out podcasters. Um, and the Hoop Genius podcast. I’ve listened to it a number of times. BJ is really good on that podcast. In fact, I’m going to play for you a clip from this p his podcast. This was discovered by longtime Sacramento Kings fan, active on Kings social media, Drew. And this is BJ talking about the state of the Sacramento Kings very recently, right? And I act you’ll hear this clip and then we’ll talk about it on the other side of my takeaways from this clip on the other side. But what direction should the Kings go in here? They’re kind of in in in a tough situation right now. And here’s why. They’ve made these trades. They picked up D Rozan in in a you know free agency. Then they make the trade for Zack Lavine. Then they move off of De’aran Fox. Malik Monk gets hurt. Right. He gets hurt. Correct. So, they’re kind of in this odd scenario where two or three out of the, you know, their top four players, I I don’t know what happened to Keegan Murray. Like, he’s just kind of I don’t know what happened. you know, he had a terrific rookie season and then all of a sudden they get rid of uh Harrison Barnes and then suddenly they fire their coach and now they’re in this I I don’t know where they’re at. It’s kind of like they have a combination of players but they don’t seem to fit right. Sabonis was hurt comes back. Darren Fox is out. They trade for Valenunis as well. traded for Valenunis. So, they have this mixture of players, but it doesn’t look like a team. It looks it just look like a a collection of like really talented players. They’ve got great assets is that’s the word that people use now. But like Keegan Murray, he shot 41% as a rookie from three. This season, he’s shooting 43 34%. You know, he’s trending downwards. Yeah, I feel like offense with a dear Fox is easier for a player like Keegan Murray to fit into compared to when the offense is a guy like D Roseine. Yeah, it’s again then I I don’t know. I I’m I’m just looking at their collection of players. What’s their identity or what’s the identity of this team? Are they a defensive team? Are they a fast break or you know five out team? All right. What What’s Are they big? Are they small? I I don’t know. So, you know, we’ll see. We’ll I guess we’ll I guess we’ll find out something after the what, you know, after the season’s over with. And then, well, in 8 minutes time. Yeah, we’ll begin we’ll get we’ll begin to see what’s going on here because it it doesn’t it doesn’t feel right to me, you know? The their season doesn’t I mean, their their team doesn’t feel right. Yeah. Yeah. I mean on paper. All right. Well, we we’ll we’ll stop it there. Um so that’s the that’s BJ Armstrong. Um the like the only thing from that clip that I just kind of roll my eyes at or disregard is he was talking about Keegan Marie a little bit. Not that I’m like just captain defender Keegan here, but sounded like an uncomplete or an incomplete thought. I I think he was talking about it from the standpoint that that Keegan Maria suddenly regressed into not being a very good or very successful player. I think very Keegan’s regression I think is very circumstantial. Now, is Keegan going to live up to the potential all-star expectations that the Kings had when they drafted him? probably not at this point, but I think we all believe Keegan can be significantly better and probably will be significantly better offensively than he was last season when this team has some sort of semblance. And that that kind of brings me to the rest of this clip. I actually like I’m encouraged by everything that BJ said there in that clip because if he were coming in and there was a clip of services and he was saying, “You know what? I actually like the Kings team. The Kings The Kings are pretty close, right? Like I think the Kings will get there. Then I would have been like, “Oh crap.” Like here, here we go. Like, yes, everything he said there is true. It It is a collection of talent. It is not cohesive. It does not work, right? Like, we know it does not work. We don’t know what their identity is. We don’t know where they’re going. It does not work. The fact that he recognizes that and is talking about that before getting the job makes me believe that he knows he’s taking a position and inheriting a situation that does not work. Now, he’s still going to assist Scott Perry, but at least that’s going to be a voice in the room with Scott that’s saying, “Hey, Scott, what the former regime did, this mess that we’ve inherited, it’s a lot of talent, but it isn’t cohesive. We need to do something about it.” So, I like the hire of PJ Armstrong. That clip was actually very encouraging to me. I’m curious your thoughts on that. All right. So, like I said earlier on in the podcast, I will be getting back very soon to a more regular Lockdown Kings upload schedule. I’m still going to be taking my time here this week. I had to get you something though because it’s been it’s been too long in my opinion. I’m starting to get like the the the the PTSD or the FOMO or or whatever of just not putting out an episode for you guys. Um, so as more information comes out about the coaching staff, the front office staff, of course, pre-draft workouts, things of that nature, uh, we’ll still have more podcasts on that. had a lot of great guests coming for you here on the Lock on Kings podcast. And like I talked about around a month ago now, I am doing a fansonly week. I am doing I’ve already reached out to uh five different groups of Kings fans that reached out expressing interest in being on the show. If you are one of them listening to this podcast right now, expect an email shortly about when I’m going to schedule a time to interview your group because I do want to have a week where we just talk to Kings fans about the state of this team, how they feel about this team going forward, how they feel about last season. That is all coming on a fans only week. I’m not saying that’s going to be next week, but that’s coming in the very near future. So, keep an eye out for that. Appreciate your patience with me. Uh, while the content has gone down, I think I although I think we all could use a little bit of a break from the Sacramento Kings based off of how this season has gone, you want to share your thoughts on any of these coaching hires, the front office hire of BJ Armstrong, what BJ had to say in that clip, feel free to share that with me, matte sack on Twitter, email me, matte [email protected], leave your thoughts in the YouTube comment section down below. Appreciate your support. Can’t wait to have you join me on the next episode of Locked on KKings. Until then, my name is Matt George. You’ve been listening to the Lock on Kings podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network.

Matt George breaks down the early reports of names joining Doug Christie’s coaching staff and Scott Perry’s front office staff in Sacramento.

  1. Bobby Jackson part of Christie’s staff! Jackson was killing it back in the days against lakers. One hell of a 6th man that year 2002

  2. It’s all about if they’re assertive and making moves to improve the team you can hire all these guys from the early 2000s but that doesn’t guarantee wins, Kings need to higher they’re expectations.
Also with Coach Doug I’d like to see more play calls, better substitutions when team is on a 0-6 run etc, Less motivational speeches.

  3. Dont be fooled people. Doug coming back was NOT perry's decision. It was vivek and were probably gonna be in the same situation if not worse because for the most part, were running this squad back

  4. I am encouraged by seeing BJ Armstrong in the Front Office. I like seeing Mike Woodson and Bobby Jackson on the bench as well. I am glad that Leandro Barbosa is staying. My hope is that any further ass. coaches would come from places like Boston, Cleveland and Denver. Places that know how to win. They have the assistants to establish the culture. What they need to do is get the guys who have experience winning to reinforce that culture.

  5. I am glad Leandro is staying. You could see he had an active role with Doug. I think once Brown was terminated, a lot of those coaches were lame ducks waiting for their next gig.

  6. I'm actually excited about the Hirings…. I'm a Kings Fan Ride or Die.. Changing the Culture and Mindset of the Team may hurt in the turnover with players but in the long run…. It's needed and will Work!! Kings will surprise folks Next year no doubt!!!!
