‘Resilient’ Knicks beat Celtics in Game 1, Can New York win the series? | NBA | BREAKFAST BALL

So, is it time for the Celtics to hit the panic button? Yes, you bet [Laughter] your gave up homecourt advantage. Couldn’t hold on to a 20point lead and now you answer to us. It’s the Knicks series to lose. That’s why Eddie House isn’t here. Yeah. All right. Celtics are panicking. You could smell it. Now, NBA champ Eddie House does join the program on Breakfast Ball. Eddie, welcome to the program, man. It’s great to have you, buddy. Thanks for having me. You got it. All right, let’s start with that one, Eddie. I just want to finish the job. Brick. Brick. Brick. Brick. I got 40 more to go. Brick. Brick. I mean, you guys built a couple condos in downtown Boston last night. 45 bricks. All right. Well, Eddie, let me show you the uh let me show you the highlights as the Knicks and Celtics started off with a bang. Jaylen Brunson led the Knicks on the comeback with 11 points in the fourth quarter. He missed that gamewinning opportunity despite having a great look from Cat. It was an unbelievable inbounds play. Here it is right here. Going back, cutting to the hoop, but missing the floater right there. Then Muel Bridges took over with his defense, including ripping the ball from Jaylen Brown as time expired and the Knicks steal one in Boston. So Eddie House, did the Knicks prove they can win this series? No, they didn’t prove they can win that series, but they proved to me that they’re resilient. They showed me that they won’t quit. They got fight. They got dog in them. And you got to put them to sleep. You cannot allow them to linger around because they do have the Jaylen Brunsons of the world where at any moment he could just go off and carry this team to a victory. I thought that my my key to the game was the role players. You can’t couldn’t let OG get off. You couldn’t let McBride get off. You couldn’t let Male Bridges get off. It was like let Cat and Jaylen Brunson do their thing and you’ll be able to win that basketball game. But besides that, I I’ll I’ll just look back at what how the Celtics played, right? How the Celtics they took they missed 45 threes. I understand that if they make half half of the ones that they miss, they win this basketball game easily. But it just wasn’t no adjustment. And that’s the one thing that I look at. We didn’t play with pace. We played a lot of one-on-one basketball. We got caught up in how the Knicks play instead of playing how the Celtics play. And I think I I think I have a graphic. If they could throw that graphic up there, I could show you something real quick. Okay, so 25 plus assists this season. They’re 42 and5. They have 30 plus, they’re 23-1. 31 or more assists, 18-0. That’s the recipe for success for the Boston Celtics. We didn’t get any of that last night. We only had 18 assists. And I’m not going to blame that solely on the Knicks defense. I’m going to blame that on we just were walking in mud. We walked the ball up. We didn’t play with pace. And it was just one action. It wasn’t multiple actions. Paint touch, kick out. Another paint touch, kick out, and getting easy threes. We had took a lot of contested threes. You know what it seemed like to me when they went up 20 and they it seemed like they thought the game was a wrap and the Knicks didn’t have any fight left and they weren’t going to, you know, crawl their way back and they just stopped playing basketball, you know, and Joe Missoula did nothing to change what was happening. Although, and it was like a slow burn, you know, the Knicks scored nine in a row, get it down to 11. Celtics got it back to 14. Knicks make it three. It’s 11 again. Then they got it to single digits and by the time we got into the fourth quarter, all the momentum was on the Knicks side and the Celtics had no answer for it. And the answer to me was simple. Drive. Like because as much as we have fun with each other, busting chops back and forth in the first half, we all learned another valuable lesson. Tatum can beat everybody off the dribble, but when you’re standing 30 feet from the goal and the shots just not falling, you bring your talent level down to everybody else’s. And I thought it was a real bad mistake on the Celtics part to just keep jacking up threes when the Knicks started their run. Well, that was the thing. Like, so just they’re up 20 and listen, I I played high school wreck league basketball, but if you’re missing your shot, Yeah. you want to see one go through, it’ be nice. You want you want to make a free throw, you want to see a layup, whatever the case may be. To only have six free throw attempts in the last 23 minutes of a basketball game when in theory the other team needs to foul to get back into the game just shows a lack of aggression. and Tatum in particular, like you said, he can beat everybody off the dribble. This it’s 100100, end of regulation. Shot clock is winding down, but not like there’s six seconds on the shot clock there when he gets the ball. There’s plenty of time. Drive to the basket against Mitchell Robinson. There there’s really no reason to shoot a three in a tie game with less than 10 seconds left, Eddie. And then Jaylen Brown at the end of the game like says the exact right thing. So, they knew what they were doing, but they didn’t actually do it during the game. And I have no explanation as to why. Yeah, but if you look at that, look at the Knicks defenses set. They on the elbows right there. There’s really nowhere to drive for Jason Tatum, right? And he’s going to have to drive and kick to a guy that’s going to shoot a three. And that we call that, you know, throwing a guy a grenade right there. So, he would end up having to throw Derek White a grenade and hope that he makes that shot. What I I thought that the adjustment that could have been made was we get a rip screen where Jason Tatum is coming off the opposite elbow going down to the opposite block and you give him the ball on the post and then you let him go to work. If they send a double team now you got them in rotation. We didn’t ever get them in rotation in that second half. All we did, we stood still. We played one-on-one basketball. Took side step threes, took step back threes, one pass shot threes. And that’s not the way we play. I just showed you that graphic to where when we move the basketball, we’re damn near unbeatable basketball team. But none of that happened last night. At 18 assists, we had 13 assists in the first half. Think about that. So, we only had five in the second half. And that is a issue. That is a problem. Eddie, you have another issue, and that’s OG. I thought he was going to star in this series more on defense and offense cuz he’s done a great job in the four games they played against Tatum. He’s been the best man-to-man defender against Tatum in the league. But if OG’s going for 29 and he’s knocking down the three-point shot like he did, Celtics can’t win this series. You know that. If you don’t knock it off, you you think that’s sustainable? Yeah. You think that’s sustainable? Oie had no getting 29 points. You think that’s sustainable? Hey, by the way, let me say this. Hey, by the way, since you keep talking like that, you know, Jason Tatum averaged 33 against y’all this year. Not against Not against OG, didn’t he? He shot under 30% against Ojanovi this year. No, but against the Knicks. Yeah. Well, listen, you played one game and you lost it. And you know why? Because much like the Commodore sang back in 1967, she’s a house. Don’t do that, dude. to my team. Oh yeah. Don’t Why would you do that to me? Why would you do that to me? I told you guys I told y’all on the break by played that I went 0 for 16 one game and I had five points and they played that song. He’s a brick. I was so mad. So I go to the gym the next morning and then my next game against San Diego State I had 46. But it was uh you know what? Nobody in BYU remembers that 46. They remember that 0 for 16. Let me ask you remember it though. I logged it. I logged it. I do remember. Quick question for you. Uh and I don’t want to pry, but what’s the deal with Porzingis? What’s going on with him? I have no idea, man. I really I really was asking. I have no idea. See, and that’s the other thing, Craig. Let me tell you this. Y’all won by three by the skin of your teeth. Yep. We didn’t have Porzingis out there. He didn’t score a basket. Uh Pton Pritchard didn’t really do anything in the second half. So when when I look at it, I I’m not worried. I’m not worried. Now, if they’re able to get game two, then you got to start thinking about like, hey man, what kind of adjustments we got to make? Cuz don’t get the flip side of that, and you’re right, is that Carl Anthony Towns was a donut offensively for a good portion of the game. You had the one put back, which was about him. Yeah. And that’s weird because Carl Anthony Towns can score from anywhere on the court. But what I’m seeing more and more out of him, saw it against Detroit, saw it last night against Boston. All you have to do is make him put the ball on the floor and it’s a wrap. Make decisions. Yeah, it’s a wrap if he has to dribble. Uh it just I’ve never seen anything like it cuz he can dominate games and the putback was crucial late in the fourth quarter there. Uh it gave the Knicks a lead. But man, he is a problem if he’s got to put the ball on the on the floor. And I’ll say one other thing about the Knicks, and it’s being subjective. I’ll own that. What we talked about before the playoffs, Danny, Mark, and I, was that the Knicks were a collection of really good individual players, but for whatever the reason was, Tibido never got them to play team basketball the way we thought they would once they made the trade for Bridges and all that stuff, right? And there were glimpses last night in the second half where I saw team basketball. Now, yes, they went to Hero Ball late and not late. He’s the clutchest guy in the league. But there were moments there where the role players on the Knicks were playing their roles perfectly. I think especially on the defensive side, Eddie, in the second half, I thought the defensive adjustments, the way they played defense obviously was much better than it was in the first. I don’t think we made any offensive adjustments. That to me that was the the big issue. It was the offensive adjustments. We just kept doing the same thing over and over. We were sort of matchup hunting. And I don’t like when we matchup hunt because and that slows the game down um to to a point to where you’re not playing your regular game. That graphic I threw up earlier is we’re a team that move the basketball. We move our bodies, move the ball. And when we do that, we have success. But when we play that drag down, slow down game of, hey man, I’m on a matchup hunt. We looking for this particular guy. It doesn’t work. One one pass, one shot. You know, I don’t I don’t believe in that. I don’t believe that you got to make defense especially in the playoffs because you know everything that everybody’s doing. You get a big old now they probably got iPads but you used to get a big old binder old school trapper keeper and it will have everything in there letting you know about everybody’s tendencies every single play guys calling out plays why the why they’re calling out plays telling exactly what’s going to happen. But I just didn’t think that we played our brand of basketball. Yeah. But I tell I tell you what, if I’m a Celtic fan, I tell you what I saw that I did like and as a Nick fan, it does concern me. Getting Drew Holiday back. I’ve always loved his game, but Drew Holidayiday is a differencemaker. And there were glimpses. I know at the end he misses the shot in the corner and all that, but Drew Holiday played a good basketball game considering he missed the last three games of the first series against Orlando. He’s gonna play a role in this series at some point, and I’m afraid of him. But the one thing I’m not afraid of, I ain’t afraid at all of more bricks. House. Hey, so let me do this real quick for you. Let me do this real quick for you one time. When’s the last time y’all had one of these? You got to knock the dust off that thing. Was that an Apple Watch? No, no, no. It’s been a while. 1973. They got Yeah. Was you even born? Sadly, I was. Yeah, I was very much not. Listen, Eddie, man, all the best. We appreciate you so much. We appreciate you so much. 1. Would it surprise anyone if the Celts make 23 of 45 3s next game. Too early to pronounce the Celts dead.

  2. Props to Eddie House for facing the music and coming on this show after that game. Class act.

But he keeps saying we, is he a coach nor or exec for the Celtics? Or is he just a fan now? I know he won a chip with the Celtics, but he played on a ton of other teams too. So is he just a Celts fan now, or does he work for them?
