Mavericks Draft Rumors Before 2025 NBA Lottery ft. Kon Knueppel, Derik Queen & Noa Essengue
The NBA draft lottery is just one week away and the future of the Dallas Mavericks hinges a lot on the pingpong balls that will fall next Monday. Welcome in to Mavericks today by chat sports. I’m Jeffrey Cooperstein. If you want the Mavericks to move up in the lottery, you need to pray because in the 45 year history of the Mavericks, it has never happened. So, I’ll ask you this to kick off today’s show. Will the Mavericks move up in the lottery? If you think they will and make history, type Y for yes. If you think they won’t, go ahead and type N for no. And without further ado, let’s hop right in to today’s show. You are watching Dallas Mavericks today by chat sports. I am Jeffrey Gubin. Appreciate you tuning in here on a Monday. We got second round action coming up tonight. Obviously, the Mavericks are not in it. So, we have some offseason things that we need to go and talk about. First, we can start with the NBA lottery odds. Let’s just take a look at those. We showed you this again. I just want to uh refresh everyone’s uh minds here. The odds for the Mavericks to get the top four picks are slim to none. 1.8% to get the number one, 2% to get number two, 2.2 to get number three, and two and a half to get number four for a combined percentage of 8.5% chance at a top four pick. They are much more likely to pick at either 11 or 12. The 11th where they’re currently slotted is at 77.6%. 12 12th is at 13.5 and then 13 and 14. It would take a miracle for the Mavericks to get there. But like I said, it wouldn’t shock me because the Mavericks always get banged in the lottery. And it would not shock me whatsoever if they were if they moved down in this thing given the prior history and luck of this team. and moving up, frankly, would be a miracle in my opinion. If they end up with the top four pick, that would be the basketball gods just kind of correcting course, so to speak, and giving the Mavericks some sort of a lifeline. But since I do think the Mavericks are going to be uh picking around the number 11 pick, I did want to introduce you to three guys who I think the Mavericks could take if they do have that number 11 pick. So, we’re not going to talk about the likes of Cooper Flag, of Ace Bailey, of Dylan Harper, of VJ Edgecomb today, but we are going to talk about some guys who I think are a little bit more realistic. Let’s start with Khan Canppel, the guard/forward out of Duke. If you watched Duke basketball throughout this season while you were trying to get a peek at Cooper Flag, the other guy on Duke was Conple and he might have caught your eye as he certainly did mine. He could be the best pure shooter in this draft is he has a deep shooting range from all around the three-point arc. And I do think that’s his differencemaking skill in the league here. When Duke needed a bucket, it was Cano that was that they would turn to more often than not. And while Cooper Flag was obviously the best player on Duke, you could argue that Khan was number two and he might have been just as important to that Duke team last year. Now, they obviously fell short in March Madness, but I think Canelo could have a long and prosperous career in the league as a guy who could score at a pretty damn high level. I think his ceiling is probably around 17 to 20 points a game. And if you’re getting that in a first round pick, you are really, really going to like it. Now, here are some of his player comps that I saw from some draft experts. One said Cam Johnson, which I don’t really see because Cam Johnson is a much bigger and better defender than Khan Canppel is. But as far as the offensive game goes and the shooting range, I could see that. Although Canipple is probably a better playmaker than Cam Johnson is. I do like the Buon Bogdanovich comparison though, as I think their games are pretty similar where Bogey is what I like to call a professional scorer of the basketball. He’s not going to wow you with his athleticism. He’s not going to wow you by jumping out of the gym. But I do think that Khan Canppel could project to be like a boyon Bdonovich and go get you 19 points a game on a team that can uh produce in the playoffs. So I really think Canelo if he were to fall to the Mavericks would be an excellent option at number 11. Now I’m not sure that he ends up falling that far. I think he’s going to be picked inside the top excuse me inside the top 10, but it wouldn’t shock me if he was able to fall to 11 and the Mavericks were able to draft him. I think it would be a fantastic pick. We will get to the other two guys here in just a few moments. But I do need to tell you guys about our sponsor, which of course is Price Pics, America’s number one daily fantasy sports app. Pric has over 10 million members and billions of dollars in awarded winnings, making daily fantasy sports accessible to all. And then I’ll take the less on male Bridges at 14.4. So you can copy my picks or make picks of your own. Just please make sure you do it with our friends over at Price. Noah Asen is another name that we need to start familiarizing ourselves with here at Mavericks today. The prospect out of France playing over in the uh main league over in Germany right now, but he is uh in the French national team setup as well. and is a guy who’s been playing pro for a couple of years now. So, let’s see what Jonathan Gavon, who is ESPN’s draft expert, had to say on Asen. He said he’s nearing the home stretch of his season with four games remaining until the BBL playoff start. He has been noticeably productive over the past six weeks, going 12 for 31 from three over the past 10 games, which is encouraging considering all the other ways he impacts the game. And he doesn’t turn 19 until December. As Sen creates matchup problems every time he steps on the floor, showing impressive speed, covering ground fluidly, getting off the floor floor quickly for dunks and offensive rebounds, and often being tasked with guarding point guards thanks to his quick feet and outstanding length. He draws fouls prolifically, finishes effectively around the rim despite his slight frame, and shows a good feel for cutting, leaking out in transition, and finding teammates with intelligent passes. And all of this put together makes me think is the type of guy that the Mavericks like. His versatility on the defensive end, being able to guard point guards, being a point of attack defender is something that the Mavericks highly value. And if can do that at playing the forward, I think that would certainly add to the possibility of the Mavericks drafting him as well. And it sounds like he’s starting to shoot the three a little bit better, which is something he struggled with there uh with ratio farm. So, it wouldn’t surprise me if Asen was a guy that the Mavericks looked at at 11. Now, according to some draft boards, 11 might be a bit of a reach for Asen’s range, but if the Mavs are looking for a guy who I think can probably impact right away, as could be someone that they certainly take a look at. And then finally, we need to talk about Derek Queen, the March Madness hero for the Maryland Terrapens. If you remember, he made that crazy turnaround jumper as time expired to give Maryland the buzzer beater victory. and Derek Queen again. Now, he’s not at necessarily at a position of need for the Mavericks, which where they have Anthony Davis, Derrick Lively, and Daniel Gaffford all playing in the four five along with PJ Washington and Naji Marshall. But if you get Derek Queen, who averaged almost 16 points and nine rebounds, two assists, and a block per game in his season at Maryland, I think you could do a lot worse. Now, and he also does, by the way, have great handles for his size. Now, I’m not saying he’s going to run like a point forward like Naji Marshall or anything like that, but I do think that he’s a guy that you can kind of use in a pick and roll situation. You can use him in dribble handoff situations where he can either fake the handoff and get to the hole or he can hand it off to the guard and then roll to the basket. So, I think he does give you versatility on the offensive end there. He’s not going to value with this three-point shooting either. But if the Mavericks are looking for a guy who is bigger with a little bit of size, some athleticism, can handle it from the fourth position, I do think that Derrick Queen is someone that they could look at. Like I said, it’s probably not the positional need that the Mavericks are looking for, I I would imagine they’re going for a bit of more of a guard/wing type. But if he’s the best player on on your board and he’s sitting there at number 11, I think you could do a lot worse than Derek Queen out of Maryland. I want you guys now I’ve told you about these three prospects that we covered. I want you to pick your favorite. If your favorite is Kon Caniple out of Duke, type one. If your favorite is Noah Asen out of France, type two. And if your favorite is Derek Queen out of Maryland, go ahead and type three down in the comment section for me. I’m curious to hear what you guys have to say. Like I said, we are about 7 days away from the NBA draft lottery.
