Does the Cleveland Cavaliers’ playoff struggles make you appreciate the LeBron James era even more?

Jay Crawford, Adam the Bull, Garrett Bush, Dustin Fox, Jason Lloyd, Tyus Powell, plusa da da da, you’re loving him, Mikey McNuggets, and so many big names, it would take me hours to say all of their names. The Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show starts now. Booyah. Hey, happy anniversary to the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show. 3 years on the air now. I’m Jay Crawford. Over the next 30 minutes, we’re going to talk about things Cleveland sports related. How about this? Are you missing LeBron James right about now after watching the Cavaliers struggle in the Eastern Conference semis? We’ll discuss Bull. I’m Adam the Bull. The Cleveland Guardians are just about at the quarter poll of the season. What do you trust most, good or bad, about what they’ve done so far this year? We’ll get to that. G, I’m G. Bush and we thought Dylan Gabriel was a reach. Can you imagine Drew Aller at number two this year? We’ll talk about it and what Dame Bugler had to say. Dustin. Hey, I’m Dustin Fox. There’s my camera right there. Hey, Cats are down 02. Is it over? We’ll tell you, we’ll make our predictions coming up next. Mikey, can’t believe it’s been three years, guys. Three years the day we launched this little project. And now we are sitting here every Friday on KYC talking all things Cleveland sports. And Jay, let’s dive into with what you started with. The Cavs are going through some playoff struggles now and in the second round of the playoffs, struggling was not something that was in the Cavs repertoire when LeBron was here. I’m just curious from your guys’ perspectives, does it make you appreciate the LeBron era a little more seeing now how hard it is for a team that even that won 64 games in the regular season to make its way to an NBA Finals? I would appreciate that era more if we had more than one title to show for it. That era was was an incredible time. Both eras, I mean, they he was here on two different occasions. Uh, lot of great basketball, a lot of meaningful basketball, a lot of trips to the conference finals, trips to the NBA finals, but one banner. For me to appreciate that arrow more, there’d have to be more. I I I still feel a little short changed by LeBron James 12 years here. I don’t know how many years did he play here. Total 11. Okay. Or 12. 12. It should The greatest player in the game should have led to more than one title. So, I I I love and cherish those years, but there’s something special about this team, and I’m not writing them off yet. Yeah, I wouldn’t write them off yet, but I I will say that the one of the things that you look at with the LeBron James era was the fact that you go to four straight finals, you’re playing against one of the greatest teams ever assembled in in the Golden State Warriors, historically good. Um, you come back from 3-1. And the thing that I I remember most about LeBron is not the the championships as as great as they played and Kyrie played coming back from 3-1. I think 2018 was his best work taking the cast of characters like Rodney Hood and Jordan Clarkson and Nance and guys to the to the finals to play the Golden State Warriors. And you look at the run that they had over the Pacers. Uh look at the run they had over the the uh you know they had the Toronto Raptors. They had to get by. Um, I think that was this most special that I’ve seen him play because he was doing things like we asked Donovan Mitchell to do. Come back from 3-1, come back and carry the team. And I think, you know, Donovan Mitchell was going to have to have one of those type games if the Cavs are going to stay extended series. I mean, listen, I I I appreciate when LeBron was here because you knew no matter what it was, regular season or or playoffs, like you’re you’re most likely going to win the game or win the series. And there was just just this like sense of relief, you know, knowing that he was on the team no matter what. And and we just don’t know if this team has that backbone, that player, that that top dog essentially that can carry us no matter what. Like right now, we’re down 0 and2. If we had LeBron James, we’d still be favored to win the series. That’s true. 100%. We’d still be favored to win the series. Why not? They’re favored tonight. They’re not. They’re they’re underdogs to win the series. But my point in saying that is they’re down 02. They’re I mean they’re minus 200 the Pacers to win the series. So they’re a slight favorite now. But I mean if the Cavs had LeBron they would be still favorites to win the series, right? And guys, I don’t know about you. I mean we’re going to make our picks here coming up. I’m confident they’re going to win this game tonight. I am. I do too. But I was confident they were going to win game two. And I was confident they were going to win game two until there were two seconds left in the game. Yeah. I I I think I mean I don’t know how you can’t appreciate LeBron’s time here. It’s the only championship the city’s won in over 60 years. No, we appreciate it, but appreciate it more. Yeah. I mean, I don’t know that this changes my appreciation. I really There was no correlation to me for this. Like I had with them being down 02, it didn’t make me think about LeBron. I mean, that summer was an amazing summer. It was so much fun for everybody here. Uh, so now that it’s brought up, you think of it fondly. So, you know, no doubt about it. That parade that day. Does anyone else feel a little short changed though that we only got one? I mean, like all the trip Yeah. I I know it’s the only one that we’ve had almost in 60 years in Cleveland. But to me, I do think that as the further we get removed from it, Yeah. the more I look at it and say, you know, it was nice, but just one, but the one but the one sort of counts as like seven, it feels like because being down 3-1 against the team that they beat, I mean, like he he never I mean, they never lost as a favorite like I thought they easily could have won. I thought they should have won it in 17. Well, well, you got to think about it. When when by the time they got to, you know, getting Kevin Durant, that was that was different. like Kevin Durant and I say it all the time. Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, that was the best team I’ve ever seen assemble as as far as talent. There’s nothing you could do. You got three guys shooting 40% from three guys. If you touch them, they’re shooting 90% from the free throw line and you got the defensive player of the year. They could switch everything. I mean, they were just awesome. Kyrie, I will say this, if Kyrie Irving stays, I always think what if if they could how many would they eventually got one after Durant got hurt? I appreciate that time. I would just would look back on it even more fondly if there would have been more than one because we had the best player in the game and we had a really nice supporting cast for a number of years and and one was great, but two would have been a whole lot better. Three would be even greater. All right. Uh let’s make our picks for tonight. I don’t I’m going to be shocked if anybody picks the Cavs to lose. Do we have anybody here? I am. I’m picking the Cavs to lose. I don’t feel good about the team. I think they’ve shown no toughness and no no grit. I’m not as convinced as everybody else is that all three guys are going to play. I hope I’m wrong. I certainly hope I’m wrong about picking them to lose. But I I I got the Pacers in in a close game at home. Okay. That’s the best news I’ve heard all day is because you are the big you you you can you you become like this homer sometimes with the Cavs and I feel like you’re frustrated with them right now. I am. And so that makes me think they’re going to win. Cavs win by by double digits tonight. Uh I listen I I got the I got the Cavs. Um all three of the guys have to play. I’m sorry. Um you know do what you ever what you have to do right now. You know your heart’s on the line because you won 64 games or how many games you won. You’re the best team in the league. If you telling me that you can’t go get a win on the road and and you had singledigit losses for most of the year, I I’m questioning what you’re doing. I think Donovan Mitchell comes back, he rallies the troops. We need a game from uh Darius Garland. We need whatever Hunter and Mobley can give them. I I get if they get this win, the series is a different series going into game four. They’re going to win because they have to win. I mean, it’s not a it’s not a must-win. I hate when people say that. I I say that sometimes. Oh, this a must-win. Nope. The only thing that’s a must-win is an elimination game. Well, Jay, is it is it a can’t lose? No, it’s not a must win. I mean, what is it must win? To me, you’re just parsing words. It’s the same thing. If you can’t lose, well, you can lose it cuz you there’s a scenario that exists. If they lose this game and they win the series, no team has ever come back from 3, correct in the NBA basketball? No. No. No team has ever done it. And baseball, obviously, the the Yankees blew a three-0 lead. The Red Sox, but I don’t think in the NBA any team has ever come back from a 3 0. Does that mean that it can’t happen? It could. It could happen. 7% of the teams in the NBA that lose the first two games in the series come back and win. Only six times in the history of the NBA, including the Denver series a week ago, has a team lost the first two games at home and come back to win the series. This Cavaliers team, if healthy, is 100% capable of doing that. They will win tonight because they have to win tonight. And I I think it’s going to be I I agree with you, Dustin. I think it’s going to be a rather comfortable lead. Not to say that Indie won’t make it close late cuz that’s what they do. But I think the Cavs learned a lot from game two, and I think they’re going to make the appropriate adjustments. Kenny Atkinson is a better coach than he showed in this series. The Cavs were winning both games one and two. Yeah. In the fourth quarter, a 20-point lead in game two. Well, but G game one, Indiana was the better team in game one. They closed out better in both games. And this is where games are won in the NBA, closeouts. In both games, I give Indiana an A+ and I give the Cavs an F in both games. Yeah. And that a lot of that I know the Patriots shot nearly 60% from three. The Cavs shot like 22% from three and they still had the lead in the fourth. But my point is the Cavs are the better team in the series. They we they stole two games from us. They did because they were better in the closeout situation and not just a little better. They were head and shoulders. They put on a clinic on how to close games and we put on a clinic on how to blow games. Must you need to see desperation? You have to be desperate. Guys need to be on the floor. Guys need to be gutting it out. Uh you got to do whatever you need. Fight, claw, steal, grab, whatever you need to do to get a win. And that’s the only thing that matters. Go up uh or win this game and make it 2-1 and then anything happens in game four and we’ve got a series at that point. They always say a series, an NBA series doesn’t begin until a road team wins. Well, in this situation, maybe the series doesn’t begin until a home team wins. Yeah, we don’t know. Let’s hold off on the home team winning for at least two more games. But yeah, I hope so. Shams on Sports Center just a minute ago said after going through pregame workouts, the expectation is Darius is going to play. Great. Wonderful. What about the other guys? Who said that on Sports Center? Shams. What about the other two? It I didn’t see the reporting of the other two. I’m looking online right now. I think those two quickly I I know we’ve got to go. Who would you guys say is the most important of the three? If you only have one of the three. See, I think it’s Garland. Garland. I I Mobly is Mobly is the defensive player of the year. I know. But man, Garland to me the things that they were killing us on at the end of the game are Garland strengths. You know, getting open, inbounding the ball, getting What about rebounding on a free throw though? Anybody can do that. Put a body on somebody. It certainly helps with moy. I agree. I agree. Both guys I would love to have, but at this point, if I only could have one, I’m going to take Moy. All right, we’ll see. All right, we’re taking a break. When we come back, this was one of the craziest reports I’ve seen in a long time from Dane Bugler. He is one of the best draft analysts in all of media. He has a report out there that the Browns would have with the second pick in the draft taken Penn State quarterback Drew Aller. What? We’ll discuss when we come back. Welcome back to the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show. We want to take you to a recent uh clip from Scoop City, Diane Rini’s podcast, Dane Winkler, uh friend of the show. We’ve had him on. He’s really knows what he’s talking about when it comes to the NFL draft. Listen to what he said the Browns were prepared to do if one quarterback that didn’t come out would have. When you look back on it, how are you going to look back at the 25 draft? The Travis Hunter trade. Like I think that um is going to be my lasting uh memory of this class is Jaguars being bold, getting someone that’s going to help them on offense and defense, and then what does this mean for the Browns moving forward? It’s a pretty exciting quarterback class next year. I don’t there’s not like a a Caleb Williams or Drake May where it’s like oh there’s a obvious uh number one guy but there’s a lot of talent at quarterback and it’s funny if Drew Aller is one of them from Penn State. If Drew Aller would have declared he probably would have been the number two pick to his hometown Browns but he goes back to Penn State and now we’ll be talking about him. We’ll be talking about Arch Manning. We’ll see what happens this year with the two rookies and all that. But the Browns next year going into that draft will be so pivotal for them and for all the jobs in that building. I I watch a different Drew Aller than everybody else. I don’t know that he was necessarily saying he had some info inside information. I think he was just saying he’d have been the next quarterback. He would have been the next quarterback taken and the Browns, you know. Yeah. I don’t know. I mean, listen, I when I saw him play, he didn’t look that good. That was the consensus. Drew would have been told that by the myriad of people he asked before he made the decision. stayed in that that was a report other than just an opinion that he would have second quarterback taken and the Browns like you said would have taken a quarterback if they needed. Does anybody else think that they would have taken Drew Aller? I don’t I don’t understand what he’s looking at. I don’t either. I watched the Notre Dame game and they were begging him to make any throws possible to win the Ohio State game. Go Ohio State Go watch SMU. Go watch the the Oregon game. I mean, he hasn’t thrown. We’re the 300 yard games. You go go look at his timetable and you’re like 171 right here. A cut 125. Gee, is it this? It’s He’s got the prototypical NFL quarterback body. Like when you look at him, you’re like, “Okay, he looks the part.” He reminds me of Christian Hackenberg. Remember Christian Hackenberg was that guy? You the Jets draft him like the he has the prototypical size and the arm and he looks the part and I get it. But I mean, I’m looking very hard at it and I’m just looking at it. I I just don’t see it. Now, not to say that the kid can’t come out next year and light it up and and do something and, you know, make his stock go up, but from what I saw in in the college football playoffs, I I didn’t see the number two pick out on the field. I didn’t see that. I think it’s more based off of the raw potential for the kid. Like, he he went back for another year because he needs more time to play and and like you saw what Notre Dame did. They took advantage of the fact that he was not ready for the moment, you know, like they they were like, “Go beat us.” and he he couldn’t. So, I think it’s smart for him to go back to school. I think the skill set’s there uh in terms of his his physical traits. I think it’s upstairs he’s got to got to work through some work through some things if I could spit it out. And it’s to me similar to Josh Allen. Like if you watch Josh Allen’s college tape, you’d be like, “Hey, this guy, yeah, that guy.” I mean, I’m not saying he’s Josh Allen, but like there’s similarities in terms of like you look at a guy big, strong, big arm. Yeah. He passes the look test. There’s no doubt. I’ve rooted against him in the games that I’ve watched him play because I’m a Buckeye fan, but I actually was rooting for him against Notre Dame. And I kept asking the question, what does everybody see in this guy? I want him to play well right now and and the moment is there and he did not rise to the occasion at all. You know, I the whole thing about quarterbacks, it listen, it’s a crapshoot. um we are where we are right now because of the fact that you know we don’t have a quarterback and you know the Browns last week came out and said they had Dylan Gabriel as their number like the number two quarterback like on their board like it just goes to show well David Zigura said it that the Browns didn’t say yeah but he’s getting it from someone in the no right but after the draft it’s easy to say that because yeah you almost have to say that we got our guy we’re happy but you know that that just goes to show you how wild evaluations can be from team to team, people to people, person to person. And I always would say back one day, a couple years ago, remember when Matt Barkley was a guy or or or uh Jake Locker or Matt Liner, we always got a guy that’s supposed to be great. This year was Carson Beck. Who knows who it’ll be. Um but hopefully we we’ll see. Brown’s got two draft picks. They’ll figure it out. Three uh all four the four best quarterbacks in the NFL were all first round picks, but only one of them was the first overall pick. Mahomes, uh, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen were all not the first quarterback taken in their draft. So, correct. Who do you have as the fourth? That’s in the FJO top four. I mean, who else would you put ahead of him? I don’t know. I mean, I think he’s in the top four. Yeah, but you’re right. He’s the only one that was the number one over. And that was one of those rare drafts full. Yeah. Where there was no question. I mean, he was For me, there wasn’t. There were some people saying talking about Tua after the year he had at LSU. I’ve never seen a year like that in my life. Like a college year like Yeah. Joe Burrow, they talk about Joe Burrow being a fifth, sixth round pick and I’ve never seen somebody just just do what he did that year. Now granted, you go back and look at his receivers, Jamar James and Justin Jefferson on the same squad. Uh Clyde, he delivered. He didn’t Edwards Hillair who’s another first round pick. I mean, they were literally Well, he’s been a bust in the NFL. Yes. But I will say um yeah, Joe Burrow, he came I don’t know. He came out of nowhere that year. Maybe maybe there’s a guy who comes out of nowhere this year in the draft and becomes That’s the thing there. You know, we we can make a list now of the guys that we think will be the best available quarterbacks next year. That’s an effort in futility that I mean, we don’t know what’s going to happen. That’s right. Somebody will emerge. You’re right. And with NIL, there’s less pressure for the guys to to leave college early. Sure. Because they’re getting paid, you know. Yeah. I I will say one of yours wishes he was back at Texas. That’s or somewhere else. He would have transferred and got an NIL like 8 million or something. Yeah. And I don’t there’s no guarantee Arch Manning is coming out. I’ll just let you guys know. There’s no guarant new new deal. Viori, he’s sweet and he does not need the money and he can manipulate things. He can look and see who are the teams at the top of the draft. Oh wow. I don’t want to go there. Maybe we’ll roll the dice and see what’s available next year. He’s going to be the number one pick then. Anyhow. Yeah. Yeah. All right. We’re taking a break. When we come back, the Guardians have reached the quarter poll. They’ve actually put together a nice start to the season even though they’re two and a half games out of first place in the AL Central. Of all elements, Cleveland Guardians, what are what’s the one thing you are most sure about? And it can be anything. We’ll discuss that when we come back. Welcome back to the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show. Let’s talk Cleveland Guardians. Not bad really when you consider everything considering the injuries and the slow start by some of their uh normal cogs. Live shot there at Progressive Field. Listen, if you’re a baseball fan, uh try to make it out to the ballpark this weekend cuz we’re supposed to have beautiful weather. Yeah. And attendance is down and it’s down considerably from last year. Yeah. So, uh they can use your support. They’re 22 and 15. Not great, but but seven games over 500. Seven games over 500. The quarter poll. I think it’s the what third or fourth best record in the American League right now. Third best in the American League. Now the shocker is the Detroit Tigers have the best record in the American League and they’re two and a half games. I don’t know. I’m not finding it shocking anymore. I listen I I picked Detroit to win the division and I’m going to stick with that. I think they’ve got a wonderful team. Yeah. Okay. So, there’s been some surprises, good and bad. Um there have been some injuries. Uh, of all of the things that you guys have seen so far this year through at the quarter pool, what’s the one thing Bold that you’re most certain is going to continue for the whole season? Uh, to me it’s the bullpen. I mean, the bullpen for the most part has been great. Emanuel Claus struggled early. Uh, but he’s I he to me feels like he’s back on track. I mean, he’s only had that one bad appearance in Pittsburgh that Sunday. Before that, he had three or four straight good appearances. Since then, he’s been really good. Uh, the rest of the bullpen for the most part has been great. I know Kate Smith had a rare bad day the other day, but besides that, he’s been lights out. Hunter Gatis has been lights out. Tim Heron after some struggles early has been great. Joey Canillo for the most part’s done a great job out of that pen. U, so across the board. And they got more guys coming off the injured list down in the minor. So the bullpen is what I trust the most. Okay. And they’ve done for the most part delivered this year. Yeah, my guy is uh I’m just going with Steven Quan is a five tool player. I I mean, and I know the Homer thing, you know, you’re not you’re not thinking of Steven Quan as a power guy. I think he’s going to hit 20 this year. I do. I think when the weather warms up, he’s going to start hitting for more power to me. And this is a pleasant surprise cuz I’ve loved him as a player since he’s come up, but he is a Gold Glove winner. He’s now hitting over 330. Um, which is puts him at the top, really near the top of the list as the best batting average in baseball. He runs the bases at a plus. He drives in runs even though he’s leading off. And the 7, eight, nine hitters typically in this lineup have been absolute garbage. Yeah. But, uh, he has emerged to me as a legitimate star in the game. And it’s scary to me that we’re gonna most likely lose him because we didn’t lock him up when we should have and he’s wanted nothing to do with that. He’s betting on himself and I don’t blame him. He is a tremendous talent and we’re lucky to have him. Listen, I’m going with Manardo. I I finally seen what I like to see out of him. I think he’s setting himself up for not this year, but next year being a guy who could you could say legitimately maybe the best hitter on the team. I’m Yeah, that’s where I’m going with. Listen, he’s giving you the home runs. That’s the what I like the most. He’ll get the batting average and the OPS and he’ll go up when when he gets more at bats, but I like the power at eight right now. Um, listen, I I got him at 25 home runs this year. I think he’s trending in the right direction and he’s he’s part of the reason that I kind of have to go overall with the Guardians. They just continue to do Guardians things. I had him coming in third in this division. They’re in second right now. And the Royals are right on their heels. They’re right on their heels. I I have picked the Royals to be ahead of them and they would be fighting with the Twins uh for fourth position in the division, but I will say the Guardians and the AL Central, they just they they they beat AO Central teams and I think they got a good outside chance of making the playoffs again even though they let guys go in the offseason and the pitching isn’t where they they would like it to be. Guardians just just show up and win, you know, like I I didn’t think this is going to be a great year for the Guardians. However, here we are. They’re 20 seven games above 500 right now and and we’re just starting May. Like they’re going to be a playoff team, I think. Uh and and that’s all you can ask for. It’s like I don’t know. We we’ve got good players. The pitching is has been solid. Class I was worried about. It’s nice to see he’s pitching a little bit better as of late, but uh no, this team’s they’re nondescript per us. Yeah, they are. Like you got Jose, their best player hasn’t exploded, right? and they’ve got Shane Bieber sitting there waiting to come back. They’ve got David Fry waiting to come back. Uh if those if those guys can come back around the All-Star break, then there’s a legitimate chance that they can win the division and catch Detroit and and hold them off. Detroit’s legit. Um I felt that last year after the playoff series with them. I I I was spending some time with a bunch of Tigers fans after the last game here in Cleveland and I told them, “You guys aren’t going away anytime soon. I like you’re going to be back and you’re going to be better and you’re going to be a real contender for this division for a while. They’re young. Their their pitching has been tremendous. Um Bull, is there one thing the mo the thing you’re most concerned about? Cuz I with I was most concerned about I’ve sort of put that to bed. I’m concerned about about Joy and I it feels weird to say that. Yeah. I I don’t know. I I mean, yes, there is some concern because he’s been terrible for the last Well, yeah. I mean, he’s been terrible for about a month now. I’m worried about injury when he he plays through every injury and so I’m a little worried about that. But just in general, I don’t have a lot of faith in the in the lineup and there’s not uh any replacements coming. We got to go. Have a great weekend. Peace. Later.

  1. No I don't appreciate the lebron era cause he didn't appreciate cleveland. Why even discuss someone that not even thinking about you. He wanted gone, he got gone, let him be gone.

  2. Why should you? He left you twice and made sure you didn't get anything for him because he was thinking about his legacy. You won the lottery 3 or 4 times in the LeBron era! That Cavs team had 4 or 5 players picked top 5.

  3. That was 2016, 2025 our struggles are few and far between.

Cup is still half full. Atkinson is now 5-2 in the playoffs and this version of Prime D. Mitch is doing something special now! All due respect and all love for the 2016 gang, shoutout to the Champs, but it's time to Let Em Know and let em go (LBJ)

  4. Please please, what is your name G? Okay, the only person that is worth listening to is Mickey. Sorry! Can't listen to this.

  5. The best player went against the best team. I appreciate our one banner! Like the warriors went and got KD! What the hell was LeBron supposed to do?! Be happy we won one because nobody else in the league could beat the best team ever assembled.

  6. Listen all you Cavs be honest and keep it real for once you know DAMN WELL that the referees contribute most of your success in game 3 lets just get it out the way now go watch the 4th quarter and count How many times Donovan Mitchell receive Free throws

  7. The disrespect from his own hometown after all he did for the city and finally winning the championship for cavs and also entire Cleveland sports is just pathetic and unbelievable. If go outside of USA and tell them you are from Cleveland, they will immediately say Lebron james hometown, thats how famous he made Cleveland around the world. Donovon deserves his plaudits and the rest of the team are doing very well and lets appreciate them without disrespecting Lebron.

  8. I appreciate LeBron and the era but I knew at the time that I was witnessing something special. I was happy to see us win one. Especially the way in which we won it. I will never forget where I was when Kyrie hit the shot and when LeBron hit the block. He ran into a legit super team after that, and he did all he could do by himself. I was happy for him to win one in LA, and hope he gets one more.

  9. this team is better than the 2016 team….im glad lebron is gone. let him run from team to team .he is a benedict arnold when it comes to northeast ohio.

  10. Struggles??? They’re 5-2 in the playoffs. They are taking on a team that knows what it takes to go to the ECF. Cavs need to adjust on a physical level. Adjust or go fishing. GO CAVS!!!😊😊😊
