“Tyrese Haliburton is UNBELIEVABLE” – NBA Gametime on Indiana Pacers beat Cleveland Cavaliers in G2

[Music] 9 seconds. Steps back and hits. Tyrese Hallebertton trying to take Cleveland’s heart and it is over. The Indiana Pacers in a game two. Man, that was a stunning win for the Pacers. Welcome to Playoff Central Live and the Bill Criminal Alongside John Wall and Dennis Scott. We got complete postgame coverage coming up here on NBA TV. But man, listen, it’s a two- series. A lot can still happen. The Cavs can get healthy. I know you’re smiling here, John, but dude, that that is a gut punch. That finish right there when Cleveland played the way they did throughout the game. And for it to end like that, I mean, that’s a major gut punch. Well, you could see it going into the third quarter, end of third quarter, they almost cut the lead down, but the fourth quarter, you could just see them losing the rhythm, losing that pace. the guys that they bench presser Cleveland tried to play well and the role players did their thing, but the Pacers didn’t give up. They made those second effort plays they needed to make and then guys like Hallebert started to make shots, make some plays and you could tell those guys on the Cavs got a little fatigued. They got a little tired down the stretch and they gave itself a chance. John, I’ I’d be curious to want to know what Rick Carile said to the team, Leil, after the first quarter. When you look at the stat sheet, 32 to 15, you and I were looking at the game like what’s Indiana waiting on? Why? They’re down three rotational players, two starters. Why are they not putting a foot on their neck and really taking the game to them? And then you look at the rest of three quarters, they pretty much controlled the game outside of third quarter. So down the fourth quarter down the stretch, then they started to get greedy. Then they started to get the stops. Then they started attacking the paint. Then the ball was moving. Then they’re getting wide open shots. You’re saying to yourself, if they have started the game that way, it probably wouldn’t have been that close. So now you get down to the stretch and now Cleveland has let them in the ball game cuz they get off to a fast start. You called it out, right? How do you get up 20 knowing that you can have a team that you go and put them to sleep and you let them back in the ball game? Yeah. Like we said, we thought that the Pacers was going to come out. It’s either they going to go out and punch him in the mouth early or they going to sit back and say they three guys out. They might not play hard. They’re not going to play well, but they got other guys, like I said, they have opportunity. And Sam Sam Merrell, u Matt Strus, Jared Allen, those guys came in and played well early on and made big shots and they were defending at a high level. And I think later on, they didn’t have enough other guys in their rotation to help them in the fourth quarter. They got fatigued. The Pacers bench helped them a little bit and they got some more rhythm. And now in the fourth quarter, it’s free throw game. Guys are missing shots. Guys are are tired. And you look at it. Hallebertton goes one for two, get offensive rebound and makes a big shot. Yeah. Let’s go through that sequence if you can if you can pull it up here because I mean Tyresese Hallebertton uh is our that’s his second game winner now right in these playoffs and you called it as it was happening step back step back and that’s exactly what he did well you look at it if you’re a defender you know he wants to get to his right hand right but in this situation he’s going left you got to stay on that cuz he wants to step back he’s not a guy that’s going to really shoot it off a pullup going left the way his jump shot is so he got the step back and he made a big shot so he’s been that moment he want that opportunity a lot guy that’s saying he’s overrated. That’s two game winners in the playoffs. I guess people got to keep their mouths closed. Good call. And when they watch the film tomorrow, it’s the details. Why? How does the shooter get the rebound from a free throw? People at home for you high school kids like the small detail. Who you know is a is one of the point guard, two guard, which one you got to sher? You got to sh I got to shooter. You got the shooter. Those small detail at the end cost you the ball game because now Hallebertton doesn’t get that rebound. Now he doesn’t have the defense on their heels to go get to his patent step back and and you and you look at it go back a couple seconds before that N Smith got a tip dunk off a miss free throw. So one of like you said the point guard two guard one guys to box out the guy there the other get the free throw shooter. It happened twice and the second time costing the game. We got to talk about Donovan Mitchell’s performance in this game. 48 points. Obviously they needed him in a big way. Goes 15 to 30 to seven from three but was able to be aggressive get to the line. And I mean, when you saw Donovan Mitchell, what did you see? Uh, he was special. Like we said before the game, we want what what can he do? What can he do to help him make the right plays, do all the things. He did everything he could to help them, try to will him to a win. I just think in the fourth quarter, you could kind of see it. He was getting fatigued. He was getting tired trying to play at a high level, make all the right plays, get to the free throw line, make shots, but it just didn’t pan out for him. They should have won this game being up 20, but I think the fourth quarter those guys got fatigued, which is not an excuse. You have to still close it out. And unfortunately, as much as I love Ty Jerome and the season that he’s had. Yes. And in that conversation for six man of the year, one of 14 was a wrong time to have your off shooting night. He stayed aggressive. I thought he took good shots, but a bad time to have a cold night. Yeah, they had to pull him out of the game. Critical points in the game where he was that second ball handler for them. Uh let’s hear from Rick Carile after the stunning win as the Pacers are up 200. Well, um, hard to put all this into words, but, um, Cleveland hit us with a hellacious punch early in the game. Um, it was difficult to get the ball over half court, let alone score. Um, we played from behind the whole game. Uh, we made a little progress in the second quarter. um lost it in the third and then, you know, the fourth quarter we we just hung in. Um we’ve been in a lot of these situations this year and down the stretch of the season. You know, our our our group has a belief in one another and um you know, we just our thing is we just keep executing, we keep playing. Um did a really good job situationally at the end. Um, and obviously had to get lucky, but Tyrese hit another. So, uh, we’re very fortunate. We’ve asked you a version of this question, it seems like after dozens of close games in the last two months, but what is it about this group that makes these kind of wins possible? You know, it’s just a it’s a group of great guys. Um, you know, this environment tonight, uh, is a is a first for a few guys on our roster. You know, Matine’s never been in an environment like this. Um, you know, uh, Walker hasn’t. You know, Shepard was last year. He played in the playoffs from last year. Um, and so, you know, for some of our guys, the first half was really an adjustment period. I mean, you can’t be asking for calls, you know, when the other team is kicking your ass the way that they were. And so, um, halftime we we, uh, we gathered, um, together and and we just said we just got to stay with it. We got to keep trying to make it hard, keep trying to wear them down. Um, and you know, we got into some unusual substitution patterns, um, partially because of the situations, partially because of their size, um, partially because of who was playing well and those kinds of things. But, uh, Matine gave us a great lift. Um, you know, Nmith made some amazing plays down the stretch. loose ball plays, the the tip dunk on the missed free throw was obviously, you know, I mean, without that we got no chance. Um, and you know, Tyrese, you know, he he he came through again and um so we’re very fortunate. That first half, uh, Ty had like one assist the first half, maybe even two through the first three quarter. Seemed like they just made a effort to sort of cut off his passing. Um what’ you see uh from them defensively? They made an effort to cut off his blood flow. I mean really they they were making it hard and they were hitting him and they were you know they they were doing physical things and they had set a tone. Um and it was difficult to get assists. It was difficult to catch the ball let alone get assists or score. And so um give them a lot of credit for that. Uh we were able to change the leverage in the fourth quarter um you know a little bit in the third but but in in the fourth quarter and you know we we maintained enough energy to to get it done and give ourselves a chance and you know that’s a great credit to to our guys and uh so you know we’re we’re I don’t know how hey times I’m going to say we’re very fortunate. I mean just like how you know coaching for a while. How hard is that? Like you guys took the first game facing teams that are like almost happy to sort of, you know, go back home 1-1. Like you guys really, you know, stay throughout this game at that moment. We just we just got to stay in the present. We got to concentrate on what’s going on right now. You know, right now it’s, you know, I don’t know what time it is. I don’t know when the bus goes to the plane, but I’m thinking about when I got to be in the bus and then we’ll think about what time, you know, we’re going to get home and then, you know, it’s just a playoff series. you you can’t you can’t look forward and you got to be careful about how much you look back. you got to, you know, depending on your team, you got to do it the right way and uh so there’s there’s still a lot up in the air with health, um with a lot of things, but tonight demonstrated that, you know, particularly in the in the first two and a half quarters that doesn’t matter who’s on the floor. If if a team is playing with that level of force and connectivity and physicality and the crowd is behind them the way they were, um they’re going to kick your ass, you know, and they were they were kicking our ass for a long time. But I give our guys a lot of credit. They hung in. They kept executing. They kept fighting and somehow found a way. You mentioned substitution patterns. You obviously decided you don’t always do this to put in an all sub lineup after the end of the third. And at what point did you make that decision and just I don’t think they played all 12, but No, I mean I think you only played six guys for those 12. Yeah, it’s just look it’s, you know, well, I mean, you’re not always, you know, you chart out a, you know, a minutes thing, you know, on a minutes sheet or whatever you got. Um, it’s just it’s just a framework. It’s not it’s not anything edged in stone. And you I told Walker before the game tonight, I said I said, “You got to be ready for anything. There there are there are a lot of things that can determine a lot of situational things, you know, and he ended up in there in the first half and in the second half and in short minutes.” And, you know, that’s a real dose of reality for a young player, you know, in this environment when when they’re going as hard as they were. And it was um you know, we were I mean, swing upstream isn’t even the word. you know, we were we were trying to go into a hurricane that was coming at us and so but it’s a 48minute game, you know, and one thing that that we’ve continued to say is that Pacers basketball is 48 minutes and sometimes it’s 53 and sometimes it’s 58. You know, that’s that’s what we’ve seen in the last two and a half, three weeks. In terms of guys coming up screaming, Drew had eight turnovers tonight. He didn’t have eight turnovers in the game all year. Yeah, but each game a steal. I mean, just how Yeah, each game is each game’s a different thing, you know. It’s just it’s just a different thing. And then, you know, the next game they’re going to come out even harder, you know, and we’re and we’re home, but that doesn’t guarantee us anything, you know. So, you know, then you have all this stuff going on with with injuries and and and and nobody really knows what’s what’s happening. Um, you get hit with a haymaker the way they did for the majority of the game, but you find a way to hang in. So, you count your blessings and and we got to get ready for the next one. Coach, what do you think was the big [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Edit Foreign speech. Foreign speech. Foreign speech. Good day. Not you. Nice. You jump over again.
