This series is a perfect example why we got to stop using hypotheticals for arguments because they don’t always work. When it came to this year’s MVP race, all year we had to hear, “Oh my god, the Nuggets are so bad. Jokic is carrying them.” I mean, Aaron Gordon, Jamal Murray, MPJ, Russell Westbrook, they’re so bad. Whereas the Thunder, oh my god, they’re such a good team. SGA, if he wasn’t on that team, they’d still be a really good team. They have Aaron Wiggins, JDub, Chad, all these different players. They’re such a great team. And just to be clear, I’m not saying that Joic isn’t more important to the Nuggets than Shay is to the Thunder. Like, he probably is. He’s probably the most important player in the league. But my main point is that you can’t use these hypotheticals that, oh, if you took Joic off the Nuggets, how good would they be? If you took Shay off the Thunder, how good would they be? Like, you can’t use those, especially when awarding the MVP. And the reason you shouldn’t use these hypotheticals for something like the MVP race is because you don’t actually know. And as we’ve seen in these playoffs, the Nugget supporting cast isn’t actually that bad. Russ is having a really good postseason. Jamal Murray’s a really good player. Aaron Gordon’s been great. MPJ’s coming up clutch. Christian Brown’s a good player. They have good players. I mean, Joic had one of his worst games of the year. It‘s not really hypotheticals. The Nuggets were -10 per 100 possessions without Jokic, while the Thunder were still +4 without Shai per 100.

MVP is a season award, postseason has nothing to do with it. The supporting cast for the Nuggets were either out with injuries or just playing like ass for most of the regular season. Jokic was the most valuable player because he was not only balling but actually available enough to carry the Nuggets to a top seed
