MAJOR Mavericks Trade Rumors On Daniel Gafford & PJ Washington + 2025 NBA Lottery Preview

What’s going on, guys? Welcome into Mavericks Today by Chat Sports. I’m Jeffrey Cooperstein. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there. Just wanted to get that out there as well. I wanted to come at you with the video here today because the lottery is tomorrow and there are some rumors floating out there that I wanted to address uh surrounding the Dallas Mavericks. First of all, I haven’t got a chance to talk to you guys since the announcement that Nico Harrison fired um fired Belton and Dion Calhoun from the training staff. And it’s yet another admission of the mistakes that Nico Harrison has made. In his roundt press conference, uh, you know, right before the end of the regular season, he remarked that his training staff was elite and the guys that he brought in were better. Well, Tim McMahon of ESPN wrote a whole expose basically on the training staff. And this guy, Belton, who they ended up firing, wasn’t even an NBA certified trainer. the Mavericks brought him in to try and be a part of the new age performance staff and he just didn’t work out. He was constantly clashing with other members of the performance staff and he was let go. Dion Calhoun who was with the Mavericks for a long time, I believe uh almost 20 years. He was promoted to head athletic trainer in 2019 when Casey Smith was promoted to director of player and health performance. And now Dion, who was part of the old guard, is no longer with the Mavericks team. And that kind of seems to be Nico Harrison’s MMO is if you were a part of the old guard of the Dallas Mavericks old regime, you will not be a part of this team going forward. And I think Nico used this failure of a season as an excuse to let Dion go. And it wouldn’t shock me whatsoever if the New York Knicks were to hire Dion Calhoun almost immediately. That’s where Casey Smith is. if you remember, he left the Mavericks, went to New York to go be with Jaylen Brunson, and it would not shock me whatsoever if Dion Calhoun went over there. So, yet again, another uh mishap, so to speak, from Nico Harrison after he uh viciously, I guess, defended his medical staff and then a couple weeks later, he lets go of two of the top people in that room. So, we’ll see what the Mavericks do in their medical department. It’s just another show of a of a situation from the Dallas Mavericks there. Man, if you’re fed up with the Mavericks and how this organization is being ran, let me know down in the comment section what you guys think. Hopefully the tide can turn tomorrow with the NBA lottery. Like I said, uh the Mavericks have an 8 1/2% chance of getting a top four pick, just above a 2% chance of getting that number one overall pick for the right to draft Cooper Flag or whoever the Mavericks want to select there. Look, if they get a top four pick, they’re going to find an impact player at the top of the draft. Whether it’s a Cooper Flag, whether it’s an Ace Bailey or Dylan Harper, both from Ruters, whether it’s a VJ Edgecom who played his college ball just down the road at Baylor. If they somehow get lucky for the first time in Maverick’s history and move up in the lottery, there is a player to be had there. If they stay at 11, I still think there are a few good players that they could end up getting. I really like Jeremiah Fears, but the more that I’m seeing of Fears, the less I believe he’s actually going to be available for the Mavericks to take there with the 11th overall pick as his draft stock is really rising. There are a couple of guys uh that are currently playing in the Euro League that I really like. Nolan Trayore, a guard who can kind of defend really well as well and distribute the ball at a pretty high level. Really like him. And then Noah Asen is a forward who we talked about earlier on the channel as well. Is a guy I like who’s playing over in Europe. I like Igor Demen out of BYU. Um he’s kind of a Luca-like passer. He really can’t shoot as well as Luca can, but he definitely has a full passing range. But I the Mavericks, whatever they do, they desperately are going to need some guard help here in the first half of the season, given Kyrie Irving probably isn’t going to return to this team until uh January at the absolute earliest. So, we’ll see what the Mavericks end up doing here in the draft, but it all starts tomorrow with the lottery. And again, another reminder, we will be live for that. So, another thing uh that Tim McMahon brought up over the weekend that I thought we had to address here on Mavericks Today is he thinks that Daniel Gaffford is going to want starter level money on his next contract. Now, Daniel Gaffford is going into the final year of his contract this season and that could be mean that the Mavericks might move him this off seasonason. I could absolutely see it. Uh if they don’t believe they don’t want to extend Gaffford and give him the 17 to$20 million a year that he’s probably seeking, which is basically the going rate for a starting center on the open market. I could see the Mavericks moving Daniel Gaffford this season. Now, I know the Mavericks love the depth that they have at center with the Derek Lively and Daniel Gaffford duo, followed by Dwight Pal as a break glass in case of emergency, and they want to try to keep that at all costs. But if the opportunity presents themselves for a deal that they can’t pass up, I could see them moving on from Daniel Gaffford. I love Gaffford. I love what he contributed, especially in the 2024 playoffs in route to the NBA Finals. But if he’s not going to sign an extension here with the Mavericks on a deal that makes sense for Dallas going forward. It wouldn’t shock me if Daniel Gaffford is no longer a part of this team come the middle of October when the Mavericks are tipping up. And that also leads to PJ Washington who is also on the final year of his contract. And with the Mavericks playing with Anthony Davis at the four, Derek Lively at the five. Again, if they want to keep Daniel Gaffford, they have Gaffford there as well. Washington at the three, while I really like it, it’s kind of you’re trying to fit a square peg into a round hole there. I think Washington is primarily a four in this league. And I know the Mavericks want to be like the biggest team in the NBA. play Klay Thompson at the two, Washington at the three, Davis at the four, and then a center, whether it be Gaffford or Lively at the five. But that’s probably not Washington’s best long-term role. I think his best long-term role is at the four position. But now that the Mavericks have Anthony Davis, who is locked in for the next three seasons, and they don’t want AD to play the five very often because that’s just not uh his best position. And when you play the five, you’re prone to more injury because you’re taking more contact there. So, it wouldn’t shock me if either of Daniel Gaffford or PJ Washington were moved this off season in any particular deals to try to upgrade this roster and try to make a different move, try to reshuffle the deck here, so to speak, for the Dallas Mavericks going forward. We love both of them. Look, I love PJ Washington to stand on business. He’s he loves Dallas. He’s a Dallas native. Went to high school here. I think he wants to be here long term. Um, but it doesn’t necessarily fit the Mavericks roster profile and exactly what they need. So, we’ll see what happens here in the coming weeks and months.
