Sacramento Kings Trade Candidates: Trae Young

Sacramento Kings Trade Candidates: Trae Young

Alan Styles. You can join the show by texting 916339140 on Sack Town Sports. It’s that time. It’s trade time. Or is it Trey time? Trey Young is our target of the day. Our trade target of the day for the Sacramento Kings. And this is a guy who it’s come up before. You want to be a part of the conversation. You want Trey Young. 916 3339140. It’s come up before with Trey Young. Are you interested in what he could bring to the table and what it is going to cost to acquire somebody like Trey Young? Now, we know defensively definitely not going to make the Kings better, but most point guards aren’t. C. Can we just start there with that? Most elite point guards aren’t going to make you better defensively. So, if you are in the market for an elite point guard, you need to make up for that somewhere else as long as that player is elite enough to handle it. Trey Young, fourtime NBA Allstar, has not won a playoff series since the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals run, which feels like a really long time ago, but I did not think it was 2021. I thought that was more it was more recent than that. Four years ago was the last time they won a playoff series. Most assists in the NBA since 2020 or 2018 2019. Trey Young leads with number one. Uh Nico by a lot by about Yeah. Almost 400 more than Nicole Joic. Right. So he’s at 371 more than the second person Nicole Joic. James Harden nearly 600 more than him at number three. And at number four, nearly a thousand more than Russell Westbrook. The contract, he is owed 45.9 million next season. Okay. And after that, he has a 48.9 million player option. I feel like he’ll opt into that. That’s just my initial feeling. I go the other way. I think he’s definitely going to opt out of that. By the way, you think everybody’s going to opt out? Do you think he’s going to get a fiveyear max or a four-year max from someone? I mean, you gotta and that’s probably an argument to not go to Sacramento to be completely honest with you because even though they haven’t done anything in the playoffs, might be easy easier sell if I’m if I’m Trey Young. Easier to make an all-star in the East now that it’s it’s not his choice if he gets traded, but easier to make an all-star in the East, easier to make the playoffs in the East. So when you’re looking at a a max contract, that type of stuff is easier to sell versus being in the West, especially if you’re on the Kings and you know, not playing with another superstar. You are the superstar. This and this is the same conversation as De’aran Fox. To me, he is more prone to elite passing Trey Young. Dear Fox is better defensively, obviously. Trey Young better three-point shooter, but I don’t know that Trey Young for what he’s going to cost, I don’t know that Trey Young is going to take you to that level. Again, I got to know who else is on the squad. He’s 26 years old. He’s about to turn 27 in September. Okay, this season he played 76 games, so great chunk of games. 24 points per game, 3.1 rebounds per game to This was a really weird season to me for Trey Young. It felt like I don’t want to say he was padding, but it did feel like he was assist hunting. He had some crazy assist numbers. He averaged 11.6 assists this season. And it’s just not winning basketball is my issue. Is it you trying to get your uh assist numbers up or are you actually playing basketball the correct way and making the right decisions? Kind of cost him as far as a three-point percent. Let’s not forget he was supposed to be a a Steph Curry variant. He isn’t really that. He can shoot from the logo. 41% from the field, 34% from three, which is 1% 1.2 less than his career average. 87% from free throw land. I like Trey Young, but you know, here’s the thing, Kyle. You think that he’s going to opt out? Okay. Uh, it could go both ways. I just crunched the numbers. So, if he does opt out, then you again made those moves for a a rental because he’s opted out and you’ve lost whatever you’ve lost to make that money work for a rental or he opts in. And again, now you’re paying what? At that point, and I know we have some trade packages that we’re going to to look at, but at that point, I I mean, again, it all and I feel so bad, but this all just comes back to Zack Lavine. You cannot pay 40 mil $40 million to Zack. That that that to me is the is the biggest issue with this whole thing. And I don’t think Scott Perry would do it. And I’d like and I’d like to think that he wouldn’t do it. You can’t pay 45 or more million dollars to a trio of Damonte Sabonis, Trey Young, and Zack Lavine. It would be 135 of your 165 million on the Who is that scaring? And then you don’t because you’re paying those guys that type of money. you. Okay. So, it’s Keegan on whatever on whatever extension, assuming you keep and your fifth player is Valentunis. Starting? Probably not. Dorian Finny Smith. It’s Keon Ellis for one season and then we’ll figure it out. I don’t think you can afford Cam Johnson at that point. Well, I mean, without going into the first apron. So, and that’s okay. And that’s the other thing. So, I have to go into the first apron. Not because of the guys I’m paying because because of the guys I’m paying, but really because I need to I need to bring in more because if I’m the VC, I’m saying if I’m paying these three dudes that much money, I should not have to go into the luxury tax because they need additional help. If I’m paying those three guys that type of money, that’s my issue. All right. So, that was a good style espresso, by the way. I’m just That’s my issue. I’m still a bit warm. Still drinking. Yeah, that that was a pretty good one. So, here’s the the contract situation just to close a loop. So, let’s uh operate on the assumption that in this scenario, A, Trey Young gets traded and b he doesn’t make AllNBA in his one season with the Kings or whatever team he gets traded to. Let’s just assume he doesn’t make AllNBA. So he could opt out of the what was it 48.9 million and sign a 4-year $29 million max extension which would be 46.3 year 1 50.1 year 2 54.1 year 3 and 58.4 for year four, which if you’re the Kings, you want him to sign that. If you’re trading future draft picks and players to go get him, four years, $29 million extension. I I you know, and we had a caller earlier to talk about the 77 billion or whatever whatever it is. I understand the numbers are changing. That just still feels like a lot of money. Which, to your point, since the numbers are changing, he could opt in, try and make AllNBA in 2027, and then get a $340 million extension from someone. Exactly. And then again, these numbers sound crazy, but when guys are going to start making 60 whatever, that changes things. We have the 209 chiming in saying, “How is assisting your teammates not winning basketball?” That’s a crazy take. That’s from the 209. I would say this and I think some of it was I think some of it was unfair, but let’s go back to the Russell Westbrook MVP season. It’s it’s it’s very it’s very obvious. It’s called stat paddic. It’s it’s very obvious. Again, these team the the Hawks what were they in the Were they in the playin initially? I just think they’re always in the playin, right? Are you talking about this year? Yeah, the Hawks are the team that lost both games. They were the eight seed that lost both. Correct. Yes. This this year. Last year. This year. This year. Last year they were the 10 seed and they lost and they got the number one pick. Okay. So, they’re sitting in the playin. Right. Trey Young is averaging 11 11 assists per game. Okay. 11.6. Whatever. There was a game where he had 20, right? Trey Young again is on the eight seed in the East. He’s averaging 24 points, three point whatever rebounds, 11 assists. We There is documentation of Trey Young running around trying to purposely get an assist. Passing to one guy, that guy misses. Pass it to another guy, that guy misses. I I 209, you know, the game. Numbers numbers never lie, but they don’t always tell the whole story. Okay? And if I’m looking at a Trey Young who is just kicking it in the Eastern Conference playin with 11 point whatever assists per game, I’m wondering where how these assists are being attained. We do the same thing with rebounds when Russell Westbrook when when Stephen Adams were getting out of the way so Russell Westbrook could get rebounds. I don’t think we can look at that and I’m not saying that out of the 11 they’re all uh they’re all stat padding, right? yesterday. Okay. The or a couple days ago when the Warriors lost to to the the Timberwolves, I saw Julius Randall and you know might have had a buddy that was interested in Julius Randle’s points. Julius Randall wanted his first playoff triple double. Julius Randle every time he got the basketball was running running around and passing the basketball. It’s still a triple double and it’s legit. But you could easily say, especially if you’re like my buddy and had some American US dollars on him, that Julius Randle was hunting a triple double. You can hunt assists. It’s not that hard to do. And it’s even and I would even say Julius Randle isn’t as egregious cuz they’re in the middle of a and at that point it had kind of gotten out of hand, but they’re still playing. But you’re telling me in the regular season, you think that every assist that Trey Young had was meaningful? You can hunt a you can hunt any stat you want. Well, and I want to emphasize this point while also saying I do think they should try and trade for Trey Young if they can. But I do want to make this point of the elite offensive players in the league. He is the worst defender. Like I’m not I we can go to O LeBron D LeBron and all the nerd stats, but he the only one who finished worse than him this year is Devin Booker. And Devin Booker, you know, it was a weird situation in Phoenix, but of the quote unquote superstar offensive players or elite offensive players in the league, he is the worst defensive player in the league. He’s a traffic cone. He’s a traffic cone. So, you’d have to make up for that, which I think you would, right? And again, who else are you bringing in as we read off what the what the starting lineup probably would be, so you got to make up for that. And you’re paying them a lot of money. I’m really torn on this one. You know, you throw them in with the other the the other point guards. I can you get Trey Young type production at a cheaper rate? I’m torn, man. Help me. 916 339140

  1. Ah forget that – bad feet are…bad. I’d rather have Trae Young for what it’s worth – just having 3 more dudes at 40’mil !!!
