Heat. Heat. N. Hello everybody and welcome to Amateur Hour Sports for tonight’s NBA draft lottery watch along. Yes, finally we waited. We suffered through so much time. We suffered through a so many months, so many games, a long season. Today, today we find out not if it was worth it, but how worth it it was. How worth it was it for the Raptors? Because let’s be honest, even if the Raptors end up in their most likely spot, which is actually eighth after the lottery, despite the fact that they’re the seventh best odds, the first overall pick, the most likely outcome is uh the the eighth pick. I I’d still be worth it to me. But how worth it can the Raptors jump into the top four? They can’t be fifth or sixth. They can’t cannot happen. They can be top four. That’s what we know. They can end up in the top four. They can end up, as we know, with the first overall pick. It’s a seven and a half% chance. So we can dream. That’s it. We can dream. It’s out of our hands. You know, there’s no predictions. There’s there’s nothing we can do here. You there’s no analysis. It’s just it is what it is. Whatever will be will be. That’s it. May the lottery gods bless us. They kind of blessed us quite a few years ago now when the Raptors landed the fourth overall pick from the same position, the same amount of odds and they selected Scotty Barnes. Hence why Scotty Barnes is the feature jersey up on my wall for today. And I got to tell you guys, um I’m a little nervous. I am I am a little nervous. you know, um, days like today, th this has the chance to completely and utterly alter the trajectory of the franchise. A and that is and that is putting it lightly. Today is a day that could completely reshape the outlook of your franchise for for for decades. It honestly could. you find a you get a superstar in this draft, you get an absolute superstar that might set you up for 10 years that might put your team in a position to to just build an an unbelievable culture, set the standard, and who knows where it can take you, but this is a franchise altering day potentially. Now, for a lot of teams, this day won’t do much. you know, the team trajectory will stay relatively the same. And and honestly, that is the most likely outcome of today, but again, can a man dream? I did advertise that um uh I did advertise that I was going to be uh live 30 minutes before the draw takes place. However, um I don’t know if the draw will the draw is not going to take place at exactly 7, but uh that’s when the coverage starts. So, we’re here 6:30. Uh we’re just going to, you know, hang out, answer some questions. You know, we can see what’s up. We’re going to go through the pick arge. We’re going to go through the scenarios for the Raptors. and we’re going to go through, you know, maybe a little bit of what the Raptors could be looking for in each of the positions. So we got a while until that takes place. Reed Wensky joining us saying, “My stress level is the same as if I’m about to do a make orb breakak exam.” Uh, I’m at the level I have the stress level of an exam that I’ve studied for and I’m ready for. Like I’m nervous, but I know I got it. And I’m not saying I got, but like I know what’s going down today. I know our chances. I know the odds. I’m still nervous, but it’s not like one where I’m thinking I’m not going to pass the exam type of thing. Five Adams is common uh common Malawash potential draft target for the Raptors if they end in the seventh or eighth range of the draft which is the most likely outcome. Um certainly somebody they could look to get but obviously the aim well you know aim is as uh hopefully as is as as high as possible. Yeah indeed. All right. The draft is two days. So so June 26 would be the second day of the draft. Uh Mr. CJ Lance capture the flag. Quote, we will win again. End quote. Messiah Yuri. Messiah Jiri. By the way, I don’t know if you guys have seen Messiahi will be present and representing the Raptors at today’s draft lottery. Uh he’s done in the past, not for a while, but typically they’ll they’ll a lot lot of teams will be sending a player. Uh Scotty Barnes I believe represented the Raptors last year even though they didn’t end up getting one of their picks. But uh yeah uh well some of these are head coach like Jordy Fernandez is here. Charles Lee is here from the Hornets. Uh Mitch Johnson from the the San Antonio Spurs. Ashley Smith coowner of the Jazz is here. And then some teams of players like Keon why is Keon Ellis? Keon Ellis is there for the Kings. Bob Carrington there for the Wizards. Jared McCain for the Sixers. Wow. They got they got Zion Williamson to show up here. Is there like a is there a buffet for the for the people attending or something? Zion Williamson. I didn’t expect Zion to be have any desire to attend, but okay. Go off Zion. Hakee the Dream in the building for the Rockets. Uh Rolando Blackman here for the Mavericks. Uh Matas Buzzelis here for the Bulls. And uh as we can see for the Toronto Raptors, vice chairman and president Messiah Yajiri. So not the most high-profile member of staff uh present because Ashley Smith, the co-owner of the Utah Jazz is there, but pretty high up. Uh Messiah means some business here. Some people question that this is the last draft lottery Messiah will be able to attend for the Raptors. Number one, because Messiah’s going to be in the last year of his contract. number two, you know, hopefully make the playoffs. We’re not in the lottery next year. You know what I mean? Um, Michael Bolan says, “Ran the tankathon and kept getting the eighth.” Uh, you know, I’ll sim it once, but like like I said in one of the streams last in the stream last week, we know every possible percentage of chance. So, there’s the people who run like I simulated the lottery 100 times. Here’s how many times the Raptors ended up first. Yeah. Like there’s a seven and a half percent chance they get the first pick. So the more you run the sim, the more likely you are to get a number of 7 and a half% of the time they end up first. So the people who have wasted time doing that, I find it pretty funny because we know all the percentages. And we’ll go through those in just a second, guys. But sure, let’s give it a sim here. One of our sims here. So this would be a pretty disastrous outcome. Not just because the Raptors fall to nine, because Philly get number one. And I think that’s that’s a nightmare situation. We drop and Philly get the first pick. No thank you to that. No dream scenario. Philly fall to seventh and uh lose their pick to the Thunder. That would be that would be the dream. Um the draft lottery is taking place on Sportsnet. I have uh Sportsnet queued up for uh for watching. Kira, I don’t know if it’s also on Sportsnet, but uh it’s on TS. I’m on TSN. I’m on TSN. Uh Ray Reos says, “I’m going to let the lottery return my happiness tonight.” Look, whatever happens, you know, there’s better outcomes than other. We’ll be okay. You know, we end up with a ninth pick. We will be okay. We’ll get a good player. It’ll be disappointing, but don’t let it dictate your happiness, you know. Uh it starts coverage starts at seven. But I’m not sure exactly when the lottery itself takes place, but coverage starts at 7 on TSN here in Canada in uh in my region at least in downtown Toronto. Uh okay, more from the chat here. Derek Rose, Chicago had 13th pick enter the lottery. That is like it’s not impossible, but the 13th they have a 0.8% chance. The lotteryy’s odds are weighted a bit differently, I think, now than they used to be. But that that’s pretty crazy to fall that far, for sure. Um, uh, okay. Can you answer this? It goes in reverse. So, if the Raptors don’t get past seven, they go into top four. Yes. So, the Raptors, you don’t hear them, uh, at they’ve they’ve said the seventh team, and the Raptors have still not been called. Yes, the Raptors are guaranteed a top four pick. What happened last year was uh so the Raptors was pick was top six protected I think it was to the Spurs and when uh they announced that Raptors pick where it was drawn essentially instead of revealing it as the Raptors pick they revealed it as the Spurs pick because it became the Spurs pick. So, me not really realizing they had done that, I was watching and thought, “Holy [ __ ] we’re past pick number seven and I still haven’t seen the Raptors. That means we’re guaranteed a top four pick, right?” I didn’t realize, but then they showed the four teams in the top four and the Raptors weren’t there. I’m like, “Uh, what is going on?” And then the chat said they they they revealed the Raptors pick as the Spurs pick because it conveyed to the Spurs. So no chance of that confusion today. If you don’t see the Raptors at seventh, it’s a top four pick for sure. And that happened to us in the 2021 draft with Scotty Barnes. Uh all right. Uh best available, please not comment. Hey, Kyle Malash might be the best available. I think he could jump at the combine, too. Um, take a look at the top NBA talent. How many are number one or even top three picks, hey, a lot of them aren’t, but you’re more likely to get the top level talent in the higher you are in the draft. It just gives you a better chance of finding that talent. The actual lottery spin is done in private with every team’s executive watching before this public display. Yes. Uh, it’s already it may already be done or it will be done, but yes, they just reveal it for, you know, content purposes, which I support, but yes, you’re right. It it’s it’s done in the background. Fred was president for the Scotty Barnes uh selection. That That is true. Fred was didn’t seem very amped, but you know, I I wonder how players take it. Like, are players like do the players even know this is going on today? Do they really care? I don’t know. The Sixers. I’d be sick. I’d drown myself in Lake Ontario. The Sixers got first. It’d be a pretty horrific day for sure. Uh a lot of people fundamentally misunderstand odds. Yes, they do. Yes. Ain’t wrong. Doug Doug Doug putting that uh what is it? Engineering degree. Something like that. Putting that to use. Um did Atlanta get everyone? Yes, Atlanta got number one with a 3% chance of the number one pick, which I think it was like 3.7 or 3 point I think they were like ninth or 10th they moved up from um not from 13th though but Atlanta was last year. Uh at the end of the day worst case scenario we drop or stay at seven and we are with Malwash would m him. He may not be available. other guys they could look at. Um Derek Queen has has floated around as a possibility for the Raptors. Another center. There’s There’s opportunities. There’s opportunities here. I remember it was so Yeah. And and the issue was I hyped it up like we’re top four. We’re top four everybody. Everyone’s getting all hyped. I’m like wait did I [ __ ] up? And I did. I’m sorry. For the sake of Flags Korean development, I hope he doesn’t end up in Philly. They are notorious for bottling most of their talent. Well, a lot of it. Yeah, but I mean Joel Embiid is an MVP, so it kind of worked out there. Brandon says, “Wait, if we get first, don’t we dip into the luxury tax, which means trade Barrett?” I actually am not sure of the salary implications that are placed in the Raptors if they get the first pick. If somebody could let me know, that’d be great. Um, we are first apron team being the lottery, Phoenix says. like we’re we’re not going to be any like we’re going to cut we’re going to cut some money. They’re going to cut some money. That’s just not going to happen. Um I I don’t think they will be at least I I’m we definitely are not going to be a tax team. So don’t even don’t even float that idea. The Raptors will not be a tax team. Okay. Uh how long does it take after seven for start? I don’t know. Like they they haven’t they don’t say like, “Hey, coverage starts at seven, but at 7:17, make sure you’re sitting down.” Like, you know, like like the playoff games are scheduled for 7:30 and then uh like what? They start at 7:45. Well, actually, if there are games today, so what time are the games? They So, the Celtics play at 7:30. This needs to be wrapped up by 7:30. So, it’s not going to be like super super long, but this whole show needs to be done by 7:30. So, I’m guessing they they start around 7:15, run the whole thing, get to the top four, go to a commercial, um run the top four, then interview the team that get that gets the first pick. I I’m going to guess this is like 7:10 7:15 this is taking place. So, I’d say I mean, hey, be in front of the TV, be in front of the monitor with me at 7 and you don’t risk anything going wrong, but it’s not going to be super super drawn out. As much as it’s its own standalone thing, this transitions into the playoff game. So, they they do got to, you know, keep keep people going. How many picks we have this year? I believe just a two. It’s uh our own first, which we’ll find out where that ends up today. And it’s the Blazers second, which will be the thought it’d be a better than this, but it’s going to be the 40th pick. I thought it would be better, but Portland were better than expected this year, unfortunately. What is your take on the Giannis rumors? Do you think the Rap should make a call? Hey Brandon, sorry to do this, but like you got to watch the videos, you know. I’ve done a full video on this and I’ve also done uh one of the Saturday Q&A videos that covered this a lot as well. So, uh I’mma I’mma lead you I’mma lead you to the water there. Your choice whether or not you drink it, you know. Uh it goes live at 7 o’clock the draft lottery. 7 o’clock is when it starts, the coverage starts. Am I Celtics or Knicks? I think the Celtics win the series. Uh I I thought I gave him a slight lean at down to nothing to win the series at two. I think they’re going to win the series. Glad this isn’t competing for attention with the Leafs game. Yes, that would have been that would have been a problem. Agreed. Or maybe a solution because if this had interfered with yesterday’s game that might have been pretty good because they were absolutely horrific yesterday. Ace Bailey and Cooper Flag be nice. Well, Portland are We’re 10th last, so I thought it’d be unless some teams have lost their seconds or something. 38 to 40 range. I I I suppose um uh I think we might get the eighth pick. Okay. So, let’s I mean there’s no sense of respectfully. There’s no sense of of thinking where we’re going to end up. It’s all laid out probability wise. This is it. There’s no I think we’ll get this. I think we’ll get that. It’s these are the chances of each thing happening. 7 and a half% chance of getting the first pick. 7.8% chance of getting the second pick. 8.1% chance of getting the third pick. 8.5% chance of getting the fourth pick. Uh 39th pick. That Portland pick will be 39th overall. Okay. I don’t really understand. Maybe there was like a tie. I don’t know. Anyway, no, I don’t understand. Anyways, okay. Thank you to Invaldo for that. Cannot be the fifth or sixth pick. So, they’re going to announce the draft in reverse order. Uh if we are not called by seventh, it’s top four guaranteed. It cannot be fifth or sixth. 19.7% chance of the seventh pick. The highest probability is 34.1% chance of the eighth pick, but we do have a 32% chance of ending up in the top four. So, you know, as much as it’s this is the most likely outcome, it’s almost as likely to be top four. But there still is like a good chunk 12.9% chance of moving all the way down to nine. Very small chance of moving to 10th. A microscopic like a microscopic chance of the 11th. Like it’s probably one out of there. So there’s 1,000 possible scenarios. Maybe in like one of those the Raptors end 11th. They cannot be 12th or lower. So yeah, there’s no like the people who have done predictions or simulations. It’s all nonsense. It all the simulations have been done. There are what? There’s actually, by the way, um the there’s four ping pong Sorry, there’s there’s 14 ping pong balls all with a number 1 through 14. Four of those ping-pong balls are drawn out or taken out with a random combination of numbers 1 through 14. Each team is assigned a percentage of combinations. So all sorry all the combinations mean something different. So in 7.5% of those combinations, the Raptors have the first pick. Of the 14 ping pong balls, there are 1,01 possible combinations that can be uh selected from the the the ping pong ball machine, we’ll call it. One of those is a dud. Nothing happens. I guess they would redo it if that one and 1,000 and one is selected just so they have an even clean 1,000 possibilities. 1,000 possibilities. In 7.5% of those possibilities, Raptors are selecting first overall. That is it. No need to run a sim because if you run the sim 1,000 times, you’re very likely to end up with 7 and a half% of the time the Raptors select first. It’s a waste of time. We have all the numbers drawn up. It’s out of our hands. We leave it to the lottery gods. Who do I think is the best chance of getting a ring this year? OG or Pascal? Well, I think the Pacers will win the series and I think the Knicks won’t. So, I’m going to have to go with the guy who will be in the conference final in my opinion, which is Pascal Seakum. Um, 85.5% chance of being top eight. Yes. Yes. Yes. Could go wrong. Like, we’re thinking, hey, it’s a chance of going to first at 7 and a half%. It’s even greater chance we fall out of the top eight. Right. That seven pick announcer is going to be high tension if we haven’t already had our dreams deflate. Yes, I I do recall the 2021 NBA draft lottery watch along where we were on edge as seventh with getting announced and we weren’t called. Oh my god, we’re top four. And then kind of like, you know, you were elated, went to commercial break, and then you got brought down like, ah, we ended fourth. It, you know, still great, but like, wow, we’re in the top four. We thought we had a chance. That was a Kier, but hey, worked out. Um, well, it, you know, it hasn’t not worked out, but like I’d say it’s worked out. I’d say it’s worked out. U, there’s beer before picks. Um they they usually announce uh 14 down to five and then they run run a commercial break for the top four. Uh but by the way the uh the lottery ball system only draws the top four. After the top four are are selected through this lottery process. The rest is just in um descending order based on like the reverse standings. Only the top four is a lottery. The rest is just the reverse standings. the sim. Yeah, the simulations can be fun. It’s just like to like track the results is a complete waste of time. It factually it is. There’s no need to do that. Um like yeah, sim for fun. Oh, today I got the rap. I did three sims. I got the raptors in one of them. But like we we have the percentages so there’s there’s no point. There just isn’t. What can we get for RJ Trey? I don’t know. Um, a lot will depend on how the draft goes today or the lottery goes today before we can kind of see what the Raptors might be thinking. What pick range would you hope for? Uh, I mean top four. Like what would I hope for? Like first I I guess Mr. Row, but you know if the rapid top four it’s a great day. That’s that’s what I’ll say. Seven or eight would just be okay. Shrug. Ninth would be bad bad day. I’d be upset. Very upset. Uh I wonder why they don’t draw the lottery balls live for everyone to see. Uh probably because it’s just like a random sequence of numbers that don’t really mean much on the spot. And in doing this, they can draw out the content further. Um so it makes sense to do it this way because of like they just draw the numbers. We have 14, 12, five, and three. These are the four numbers that you have no idea what they mean, you know, and then um they tell you, okay, that means this team is the first pick. Um anyways, they draw it out. Anyways, they could, but this is this this is content. This is content they’re giving us here and it’s content that I can, you know, latch on to and create my content for. Um how low would our pick have to fall for the Raps to want to rebuild again next season? There is no possibility from this draft that could happen for the Raptors to decide to just blow it up. They are they’re invested in trying to win. That is the goal for next season and nothing that happens today will change that. Would you rather have kept last year’s pick uh and got Rob or this one? Uh hindsight, probably good we didn’t get that pick last year. Um maybe, you know, if the Raptors get that pick, they draft whoever. Maybe it’s Rob Dillingham. Maybe they’re not they they don’t tank at all because there’s no point and then they’re in the play and then they don’t have to worry about the lottery at all. as of right now kind of looks like it was we are better off not missing out on that one. Hindsight’s 2020. Uh if given the opportunity, would you draft Mobly or Barnes? Tough question. It’s um you probably would have to go uh Moy looking back on that one, but I’m not out on Barnes and and Barnes could shift that debate even by the end of next season for sure. Uh so the top three teams all have a 14% chance. the top team can only fall to fifth, which has happened on back-to-back occasions. And both of those occasions, it was the Detroit Pistons who fell to fifth. They did okay despite that this season. Uh New Orleans in fourth, 12%, Sixers, 10 12%, but a 34% chance they fall outside of the top six, which would mean their pick conveys uh to the Oklahoma City Thunder as it is top six protected. Who would have thought the Sixers would be in the position where that uh that um protection could come into place? Down here, the Raptors 7 and a half% all the way down near the bottom. It’s a very very small percent chance that any of the 14, 13, 12 or 11 move into the top four, but a chance nonetheless. Who knows? Crazy things have happened on lottery day before. Could we see more craziness here? I am currently not seeing commercials. I am on TSN 2 and I have got the draft coverage. Uh I’ve got the draft draft coverage on screen here. They do a commercial break after picks 14 through five are announced. They do a commercial break ahead of the top four. Uh, from previous experience watching this, could you imagine a commercial break in between every pick? How long would the [ __ ] broadcast be? Like 3 minute commercial break uh in between 14 picks with 13 commercial breaks, 39 minutes of commercials. It’d be like an hour broadcast. We traded away for not nothing but like relative to what Don’s worth, it was nothing. Uh disaster scenario, San Antonio, who already have Wemi move to second. And an even more doomsday almost scenario. The Sixers move up to third. Man, like Charlotte, Utah, Washington, New Orleans, the bottom four teams all bumped out of the top four. Third consecutive year where the top team goes all the way down to fifth. 48% chance of that happening, but just, you know, crazy. It’s happened three years in a row. Uh, the Raptors, the casualty of Dallas and um, San Antonio moving up. Toronto get bumped all the way down to ninth overall. They had a 12 a 12.9% chance of that happening. Uh, it it’s just, you know, probabilities. Doug B said in chat, probabilities don’t care about narrative. That was the probability. It happened. It’s a one-time sample size or anything can happen. It is what it is. So, let’s take a look. Like I said, no matter where the Raptors end up, I’ve said it. It still sucks. It sucks big time. Uh especially, you know, moving lower than I expected us to based on the odds, you know, 14% chance of not being a top eight team. It happens. Tough tough to sat through the season to have that happen. But, okay, let’s um let’s take a look because I said there will be talented players available in these areas and and I’m not wrong. Uh there are talented players available. I’ve had my eye on on a backup center and a backup center that the Raptors could absolutely be looking for in this area is common Malawash could easily fall to ninth overall. Uh my worry is that he’s going to draw enough attention at the NBA combine that he’s going to jump up a little bit and be beyond the reach. Seven and eight see themed seemed feasible for common Malawash. Doesn’t really seem like he’ll fall to nine to me. So, you know, might be. We got Derek Queen at home. Derek Queen’s still a good player definitely to look at in this range as well. Ninth overall. The current Tankathon mock draft, which I’ll give him credit, has been updated very quickly, has Derek Queen going to the Raptors at the ninth overall position. So, uh, that that’s not it’s not an unhappy outcome of the draft, uh, by any mean whatsoever. And look, the combine’s about to take place. Uh, you know, we’re going to players are going to build different stories. We’re going to get more information. So, a lot of this will change. A lot of this will look different. The top four seems pretty fixated. Um, you know, especially the top three with Cooper Flack, Dylan Harper, Ace Bailey, Dylan Harper next to Darren Fox. God damn it. Cooper Flag slots in for Donic. You know, like I said, uh there’s still a backup center void on the team, which can still be potentially filled with the draft, but you know, a lot of questions are now going to pop up in regards to trading trading the pick. It’ll always come up trading the pick. What are the refs going to do there? Uh what I’ll say on on the potential of trading this is the Raptors are not a popular free agent destination. They just aren’t. You know, Canada’s part of it. Tax implications are another teams like, you know, Dallas and San Antonio get a bit of a head start in agency because of playing in a non-income state income tax region. Naturally, they get the top two [ __ ] picks. [ __ ] off. So, uh, you know, we build our team through trades and through the draft. And the best thing the Raptors do is scout talent, draft talent, and develop talent. So, you know, if that’s the best thing that we do to me, put the money mate where your mouth is. Essentially, keep that pick, find some talent, draft that talent, develop that talent. That’s what we got to do from here. It’s the unfortunate outcome of the draft though. Even if we were like seventh, I don’t think even at seventh we’re drafting a guy that’s starting for the Raptors next season. I think we’re drafting a bench piece that’s going to hopefully develop into that starting piece. But I didn’t perceive a starter getting selected for the Raptors at seventh overall or even maybe fourth, maybe even not even third overall. Uh you want to draft the best player available, but if like the second best player available fits way better, maybe you go for them instead so you don’t have to worry about fit as much. talent over fit to a certain extent. I think the higher up in the draft you are, you don’t worry about it. Like if you’re the first pick, you just take the best player. Top four, you probably just take the best player. But around nine, you know, you can start to maybe think about the fit a bit more.
