You can follow me at Ethan J Skolick at Five Reason Sports. Make sure you check out all the recent episodes that we put up. There have been a lot. And I’m excited about this episode because I followed this guy for a long time. Even before even before the Will Bradley Beal wave, his no trade clause stuff that was going on for about two months. He’s Gerald Borgay. You can find him now at phnx_ports. He’s the lead son Suns writer. He’s around Phoenix, the Phoenix Suns all the time. Knows the organization as well as anybody. And of course, he’s here to talk with us because we asked him to about Kevin Durant. Uh which I basically asked Pat Riley about at the press conference. I asked him after Sha and Dwayne and Jimmy would he and I could have said Timmy and Zo and Bosch and a whole bunch of other guys too, but I focused on those three. Would you be willing to manage another aging star? Because I know that he’d have some reluctance about that. Pat does not. Uh Pat made it clear that if it’s the right player with the right contract, uh that it’s something that could work. We know that they’ve had a a KD fascination forever 2016. They kind of finished a relatively close second to the Warriors because Spo impressed Durant uh at the presentation. They had no business being in that conversation. All they had on the roster basically was Dragitch and Whiteside. uh but he considered it at least. They tried again in 2022 when he was in Brooklyn. They tried again at the deadline this year when they found out basically that Jimmy was going to be flipped uh for Durant. They’re like, “Well, you know what? We’ll take Durant.” Uh and then when they made an offer, which we’ll talk about as we go forward, but Gerald, appreciate uh you joining us. And and I guess the first question is, is Kevin Durant still great? Yes, absolutely. Kevin Durant is absolutely still great. Um, the thing is that he’s obviously approaching his 37th birthday before the next season starts and and that’s probably where Heat fans or any fans of a team that’s trading for him would be the most concern. Uh, but this is a guy that if he had met the threshold for the minimum number of games played this year, he probably would have been all NBA or at least strongly considered despite the fact that the Suns were a 36- win team. Uh, Kevin Durant was one of the few people that did his job this past season. Uh, I know it’s easy to look at the Suns and see just a bunch of turmoil and chaos and disappointment. Um, but Kevin Durant was, you know, fantastic as ever. 27 six and four stat line. Still very efficient shooting splits. Um, and this is a guy that last year only missed like seven games. This year he missed about 20, so he wasn’t as healthy as he’s been in past seasons. But if you’re still getting 60 to 65 games of Kevin Durant, um that’s more than enough to be worth, you know, interest in him. The question is what kind of package it would take to get him. Um and then obviously there’s kind of that potential contract extension that’s still hanging overhead. He’s eligible to sign a two-year extension this summer. So any team that’s trading for him would probably want to be interested in making that extension rather than giving up assets for a one-year rental. Okay. And a lot to dig into there. So, let let’s stick to the basketball part first, and then I do want to touch on the extension with you. I’m old, so I try to uh try to regiment these things in my brain. Okay. If you if you look at the way he played this year, the numbers, yes, are as efficient as ever. Um the points, rebounds, and assists are basically his career averages. So, like this is not a guy who’s been in serious decline. You mentioned the games missed. I mean, that’s less than Jimmy’s missed the past couple of years. So, I you know, if you have concerns about that, I get it. He’s obviously had some serious injuries in the past, including an Achilles, but it doesn’t seem to be that he’s slowing down significantly, but you see him on a regular basis. So, one of the things that’s been mentioned, well, two things. One is he’s not really a rim player anymore. That it is mostly mid-range and threes. He’s aggressive, but not all the way to the basket as frequently as he used to be. And the other thing is I always felt he was an underrated defender. Um, but there’s been some criticism, not criticism, but just acknowledgment that he’s not exactly what he was in that era. Could you address those two things from the way that you saw it? Yeah, so I I think the rim pressure is a valid um concern or criticism. He can still get to the rim. He just doesn’t do it quite as often. Um, and part of that might have just been as bad as the Suns offense was, like there was no organization to it, the whole play random thing. uh it was a little too random and there was very little structure based on what I’ve heard. Um so it’s one of those things where maybe a little bit more structure and a coach like Spo would be able to get that type of rim pressure or rim presence out of Kevin Durant again. Um because I think a lot of what he was doing in Phoenix was getting the ball at the elbow or at the free throw line and kind of just let him operate out of that. There wasn’t a lot of getting him to his spots um through movement or anything like that. So, I do think maybe a change of scenery could help with the rim pressure thing, but again, approaching his 37th birthday, is he going to be the same downhill presence? Probably not. Still as efficient as ever, despite the fact that most of his points are coming through jumpers. So, at least there is that. Uh, as far as the defense is concerned, I really think that is a product of the environment in Phoenix this season. like this was a bottom five defense. And last year under Vogle when they were borderline top 10, KD had like a borderline alldefensive caliber season. He was never going to be considered for it because the Suns weren’t an elite defense and there are just so many good individual defenders in the league. Now we really need a third alldefensive team at this point. But like Kevin Durant was phenomenal defensively last year. this year. I I think it’s harder to defend when you are on a team defense that doesn’t have trust, that doesn’t have familiarity or chemistry. Um, you know, individually, he could still stick with most players on the wing. Um, he still offers some of that secondary rim protection, which is pretty valuable if you’re playing him at the four. Um, but outside of that, I do think a lot of the defensive regression this season was just a product of it kind of sunk in halfway through the season for these guys that man, we’re not very good. It’s harder. I really do think it’s harder to try on defense when underneath it all know that it’s not a good team. This is a fascinating conversation that we’re not don’t really have time to get into because I just don’t understand how it bottomed out so much from Vogle to Bud when they had pretty much similar reputations when they came different approaches but had had a similar success. I mean they both won championships in fact backto-back years uh and yet uh obviously it was disaster under Bud and they’re looking for a new coach now. All right. So let me ask you this. He’s still great. Um the efficiency all that he’s a top 10 scorer. I don’t think there’s any question about that when he’s on the court. He said the defense is really not that bad. Maybe a product of the environment. Matt Ishbia is loaded. He has shown that he will spend whatever it takes. Doesn’t really care. F them picks. Uh all that kind of stuff. You know, f the second apron. So I guess I ask this. Why would they even entertain trading him? And why did this start at the deadline? Because the problem seemed to be when you put Bradley Beal in with him and Booker. And I know that we know the Beal situation very well and the no trade clause and all that. and it made it pretty much impossible to trade him. But like why wouldn’t you then say, “Okay, um we’re going to pivot. We’re still going to spend, but we have KD and we have Booker. We’ll figure out the Beal thing as it gets closer to expiring and let’s keep him.” Wh Why would they not do that? Why did they create friction with a guy who at the time didn’t seem like he really wanted to get traded? It’s a great question and I think there is some regret within the Suns organization about the way that they handled the trade deadline in terms of uh you know dangling him without letting him know. Um because all the reporting that we got and based on what I heard was that they had a deal in place with the Warriors and that it was Kevin Durant who when they brought it to him was the one that shot it down. Um Kevin Durant has wanted to retire here. He’s publicly and privately expressed that he wants to be in Phoenix. Um, but he also understands the nature of the situation that this team has underperformed. I think about midway through the season, the Suns realized that this group was going nowhere fast and that changes were needed. I thought that if they were going to trade for Jimmy Butler, it would make sense to obviously pair him with with KD and Book, but that wasn’t realistic in terms of, okay, the Heat don’t want Bradley Beal. Now, we need to find a third team that will take on Bradley Beal. How are we going to get that done? And it just didn’t seem like that was gonna go anywhere. They never presented Bradley Beal with any sort of offer for him to invoke or not invoke his no trade clause because they just couldn’t get anything done on that front. So I think there was interest there and I think they realized when trading Bradley Beal to create this new and improved big three wasn’t going to happen. I think they kind of just pivoted and realized, okay, if we can’t move Bradley Beal, we’re kind of handcuffed in how we can restructure our roster around Devin Booker because Book is still only 28 years old. You know, he’s a lot younger than KD. Kevin Durant’s kind of our only avenue to restructure this roster and still either be competitive or recoup assets, however you want to look at it. And I think that’s kind of where they’re still at this summer. I don’t think they’re going to trade Kevin Durant just to trade him and and accept, you know, some low ball offer. But I do think they also understand that like we’re not trading Devin Booker because he’s the face of our franchise. He’s younger. Trading Bradley Beal is going to be really difficult without attaching a draft pick or two to unload his salary and find somewhere where he’ll actually wave his no trade clause. Kevin Durant’s kind of our only remaining option to restructure this thing. Um because otherwise we’ve got 150 million plus devoted to three players and not a lot of wiggle room to restructure around them especially since you know guys like Grayson and Royce have been good but not the accompanying role players that you kind of need to contend. Yeah. And obviously Taius didn’t work out particularly well among others. I like that move at the time. Um I know that he had engaged with him uh but obviously that didn’t play out the way that they wanted. All right. On the other side of this, uh, we’re going to talk about, okay, so where does he go then and what what is the actual realistic possibility? What would they want for Miami? And maybe even what was actually offered at the trade deadline because there’s a lot of stuff out there that I know not to be completely true. Anyway, check it out. Real estate shop, real estatefl.com. Amanda Javier and their incredible team. Well, they’re they’re they’re married couple that will take care of you when you’re looking to buy or sell your house. That’s really what they do. They got open houses every weekend. You can see them out there in the community. Huge Miami sports fans, Miami Heat fans as well. Javier has been with us on the podcast as well. You can also check them out at the Fort Lauderdale Realtor. They’re honest. They take care of their clients. And again, they can handle both sides of these deals, too. They know the area as well. I see them out in Pines. I see them east. They’re everywhere in South Florida, in Broward County, and beyond. So, check them out. It’s real estatefl.com. That’s real estate shop, two P’s and an E. real estate shopfl.com or the Fort Lauderdale Realtor on IG. They also sponsored our defending the house segment this year. Uh and we apologize to both Javier and Amanda for those last two games against Cleveland because nothing was actually defended. Okay, we got uh Gerald Borgay back and you can follow him at phnx_ports. Uh great network that they run there. They cover Phoenix sports uh there. You can also check out uh what all city does in in Chicago and Denver and other places. Uh we do our own thing here in Miami. Some say I don’t do it particularly well. Uh Gerald, so let’s get to the trade deadline. So I’ve reported this and I’m standing by my reporting. Okay, the Heat were trying to trade Jimmy Butler. Jimmy wanted to go to Phoenix. It got into Jimmy’s head and particularly to those around Jimmy that he could basically take Bradley Beiel’s salary slot. This happened sometime in December, December 7th, the Suns visited Miami. After that, coincidentally, it all kind of heated up. Uh Jimmy really got in his head that he could go to Phoenix. His guy, his we call him his his turtle. Uh he was out there promoting, you know, putting Jimmy in a in a Phoenix uniform and saying calling Bradley Beal the greatest shooting guard of all time. So, this was all building that he paid attention to all of this. We don’t need to get into specifics of how it would be handled by the league, but whatever it is. I know there were conversations, okay? And they may have been innocent, but it got into Jimmy’s head that he could take Be’s money. that didn’t end up happening. Miami can’t make that deal because they don’t want Beiel’s contract. We reported that from the very beginning uh over my dead body is the way that it was quoted to me at the time. And so that wasn’t going to happen. So they start to engage then with Golden State. As their engagement with Golden State, they kind of find out, well, wait a second. If we send Jimmy to Golden State, they’re basically trying to flip him to Phoenix. So they start to engage with the Suns. And I know that there were conversations between James Jones of the front office and also directly the owner of the of the Phoenix Suns Matt Ishbia with the top levels of the Miami Heat organization. The Heat to my understanding and I know it was reported that they basically offered uh Jimmy’s contract Josh Richardson who was on the team at the time and a pick. Um, my understanding is they did offer Yovic that that they and that’s what they could offer without a whole bunch of minations because the Suns are in the second apron and they couldn’t aggregate salaries like they couldn’t throw Ryan Dunn in or something was a player I know that the Heat have liked since the draft. They couldn’t do any of that. So, it was Yoic. They couldn’t even include Hawz in that straight deal. The money was slightly above what it needed to be. So, it had to be Yoic and Jimmy. And then my understanding is the Sun’s owner came back and basically was like, “No, we want everything.” And that included all the young players wear, etc. Multiple picks, multiple pick swaps, and the Heat were like, “We’ll talk to you in the summer.” Basically, that’s my understanding of it. Now, I I I can ask you for your understanding of it because again, we all have different sources. We all talk. If you want to share it, you can, but if not, I sent the larger question is what exactly are the Phoenix Suns looking for for Kevin Durant? And other than Miami, what is the market? Because we keep hearing Houston, Houston, Houston. But every time that comes out, it’s like, well, Houston really doesn’t want to do this. He doesn’t fit with their timeline. And Minnesota is the other one that’s come up lately. So, I’ll just I’ll let you handle it from your perspective. Yeah. Basically, what your reporting tracks for me, I didn’t have as many details about the offers that the Heat were, you know, playing around with and that the Suns wanted in return, but that sounds pretty accurate. it and it did sound like around December, January, there was strong confidence from the Suns organization that they were going to find a way to get Jimmy Butler to Phoenix. Uh it it felt like something that was somehow in the bag, even though looking at it from the outside, it it felt so improbable when it first started surfacing. So, um I do think there was a little bit maybe overconfidence that they were going to get that done and then when it didn’t get done, uh I think they scrambled and I think that’s why Kevin Durant wound up being dangled the way that he did. Um, but I I do think from the Suns perspective, in terms of what you’re looking for, you mentioned Minnesota. Um, the contracts there are a little tricky in terms of making something work. I I think you’re looking for the Suns are probably going to look to get younger around Devin Booker, but not rebuild. They want to retool. Like they they want young players, but established players. Um, probably a draft pick or two if they possibly can. It depends on what players are coming in return, obviously. Um, and then, you know, salary. I I don’t think they would be opposed to expiring an expiring contract. Um, if it’s, you know, somebody that they don’t really feel strongly about just to free up a little bit more flexibility moving forward, I think they kind of recognize that they have to take a step back this year to take steps forward. Um, but again, they’re not going to, you know, give up Kevin Durant for a bunch of young raw talent and then a bunch of picks. They want probably some combination of those things. Um, but I would imagine yeah, they’ll probably they would probably love a guy like Khil Wear as as far as their front court. I imagine that would probably be a non-starter for the Heat. Um, given the rookie season that he had and the potential that he has. Um, so how would that shake out in term of in terms of asking for Haime Hakez or uh Yoic? Like those are probably the questions that would determine whether the Heat can put together an offer that the Suns would bite on. Um and also whether there’s enough bidding like if is there a bidding war for Kevin Durant because I think a heat a heat offer becomes a lot more attractive if like Minnesota pulls out and if the Rockets are like dead set on Giannis or just running it back with their young core. Um so those are all considerations in there for sure. And Gerald, I’m glad you went through all of that because if it look, if Houston wants to really engage on this, I don’t see how the Heat could match it, particularly because uh I don’t think KD would have any issue going to Houston. So, it’s not like he would decline going to Houston. So, to me, you look at their young players, they’ve got like eight or nine guys that in the right situation might pop. Like, they just have a lot of really good young players. They need honestly they needed a Jimmy Butler uh in in the playoffs. Like they they need somebody who’s going to be a playoff riser. I don’t I don’t think Green I don’t some of these guys Sangoon I don’t see it there. They need somebody else to kind of get them over the top. And it’s why I didn’t like them in a match up against the Warriors and picked against them because it it just didn’t look like they were ready that like if I were them I would go all in on Durant. Not all in but I would make a significant offer for Durant trying to make it happen. Minnesota’s tricky because they’re still going right now. So, we don’t really know. Um, obviously there’s the relationship with with Ant. I don’t know if that’s a place he wants to go or not. Have you heard anything any whispers about that cuz I mean, he can make it difficult if he doesn’t want to play with the Wolves. I haven’t heard anything specifically about that. I do like I wouldn’t normally picture Kevin Durant in Minnesota, but I do think that relationship with Ant like like he’s a he’s a purebred hooper. I think he would go anywhere where the basketball situation is good and he could compete. Um, and Minneapolis is an underrated city. Like, yeah, it’s cold during the winter, but it’s it’s a great city. Um, and I think playing on a team like that, depending on what they would have to give up, is something that he would probably consider. There’s more to do than there was in OKC. We’ll just say that. And, and Durant opened a restaurant in OKC to make it a little better. I don’t even think that’s there anymore. I think OKC is a possibility uh for a reunion. um if they wanted to to look they they have to Prey can’t just accumulate picks forever like we had one run they wouldn’t pay Harden the extra 3 million they they squandered one of the all-time draft sequences of all time if you look at you know Durant Westbrook Harden and Ibaka and now they have this new group and they had like 37 first round picks but I mean at some point you have to cash in and and KD cashing in there would be a great story if he did it so I I could key consideration there. But getting back to Miami, you mentioned where uh we’ve got a whole bunch of different potential offers that some of our guys in our network have put together. Um and we’re going to do an episode on that this week. But I mean to me it would probably start with Wiggins’s contract because it’s about 30 million, but then Phoenix will get another year on that. I thought it was a neutral contract when the Heat acquired him. It didn’t look like that in the playoffs. Um but I mean he’s a he’s a functional player still that you can still do something with. Duncan Robinson has a partial guarantee. You could you could get out of that and clear some money if that’s what you want to do. Um the Heat do have more tradable picks than they’ve had before. Not a ton and you could do something with pick swaps. Um I I guess the question does become the young players. I I would think that the Heat would want to hold on to where I I don’t know that that’s non-negotiable though. Like I I I feel like what we saw with Kell was there there was more progress this year than was expected. Spo went to it earlier than we expected based on his inclination to like to play 6’5 power forwards next to Bam, but it’s also a little clunky. Like I don’t know that they necessarily have a path with him and Bam that’s going to work and his motor we saw some signs of that some of the issues coming out of the draft. Um Yovic has offensive potential but can’t stay on the court and Hawkins took a huge step back this year. You talk about wanting players who can play now like is is and this could be a three-way deal too. That’s the other option they could do. I mean, would Wiggins qualify in that regard because the He Unless you’re going to trade Tyler, which they’re not I don’t think they’re going to trade Tyler to get KD and it doesn’t really make sense with Booker there anyway. Like, is Wiggins is that the kind of player that they would be interested in? Does that does that move the needle for them at all? I don’t know if it moves the needle. I think it’s fine. Like, I think Wiggins is like he’s an established player, so he could start for you, play for you, fill in for KD starting slot next year. you don’t take I mean obviously KD to Wiggins is a step down but you’re still going to compete like he’s still a two-way player that can fill a role in this league. Um he’s salary filler so you’re right that it would probably have to start with his contract. Um Duncan Robinson they could probably use and and he could either be flipped elsewhere. They could free up salary. Um you know if they trade Grayson he could fill in for kind of that movement shooter role that they currently have Grayson in. Um, and then as far as from there, if if wear was not off limits, I think they would be smart to start with him. Um, obviously has a lot of potential. Obviously, the Suns starting center spot has been a rotating nightmare over the last Do they like Nick Richards? I mean, do they I mean, they they acquired him. Do they like him? Is he under contract for next year? I think Nick Richards was kind of a pickup that we need to address the center spot somehow. we’re gonna give this guy a flyer because in Charlotte when he has started he’s played well. Um but again that was on a losing team. He was kind of meh in Phoenix. He he’s very much a backup caliber big and I think the Heat are very familiar with picking up players from Charlotte and expecting them to perform at a high level. Yes. So yes, feel your pain on that one. Yeah. And don’t trade with the Hornets anymore. Don’t stay away from mellow any of them. No, don’t. Okay. So, so basically where where for you in your sense would make and now and then the final thing on two more quick ones here because I know you got to go. First one is we really appreciate you joining us and you really should follow Gerald’s work. Um the first one is that like if could you sell this to the fans? Like it’s part part of big trades is selling it to the fans, right? Like a lot of fans don’t really want KD to leave. I I look at all this stuff and you know they they obviously understand the team didn’t work. He interacts with them on social media. It’s not always good. Um, but you know, I mean, he’s KD. Like, I mean, you you a reason to go to the arena. The Heat don’t really currently have that. Okay. That’s one of the reasons we want this to happen. Even if I’m not sure it’s the best thing if they give up too much. Like, can you sell a package of Wiggins, Duncan, who maybe you keep or you flip or expiring? You get a pick, maybe two picks, pick swap, and Kel Wear. Like can you sell KL Wear as like okay we’re going in a new direction is how would they view this? I think you can it it’s not the easiest sell. I’ll I’ll say that but I think if you get like two picks where Wiggins and Robinson you can at least sell that okay we got a young player who we think is going to be pretty good because I’m like wear was pretty high on my draft board for Phoenix last year um before they they got Ryan Dunn. Um and and again, you need a long-term center. You need and he’s somebody that can spread the floor a little bit potentially down the road. Um so I I think you could sell that especially if you get like two picks in return. Um obviously I think they would be like 2029 and 2031 probably is what you guys have. Yeah, most likely. Yeah, because they moved up their other picks. So that’s by not giving away the unprotectants, right? So distant picks, but you can still sell that you got two firsts. I don’t know how much of a priority that would be for the Suns because I do know like they’ve been very famously on the record as you know we don’t care about that seventh grader in 2031. Uh which you know that was that that was a year ago. It was a very funny quote but now it’s kind of like maybe you should care a little bit because right it could matter. Um but yeah, I think you can sell it. It’s not the sexiest return for sure. Like I think if OKC or Houston are in the running, it’ll be hard for Miami to compete with that type of offer. Um which is why Suns fans are obviously rooting for they were rooting for the Warriors to knock off the Rockets. They’re definitely rooting for the Nuggets to knock off the Thunder. Add a little a little desperation there. Um but again, if Giannis enters the fray, then I feel like OKC and Houston are contending for that guy. Um, right. So, maybe that does open up something where Miami is kind of one of the the only good options you have left. All right, we’ll close with this. Uh, give your prediction. I hate doing this. I’m going to make you do it. Where is KD when next season starts? Oh, man. I think Kevin Durant, see, because like Minnesota’s in there, the Knicks could potentially be in there if they fall apart. I’m probably gonna trade Bridg They’re going to trade Bridges back. Maybe. Oh my god. Which would be very funny. It would the highest level of comedy there. Um I’m gonna I’m gonna continue to say Houston. I know that all the reports have been that Houston is not that interested in Durant. And I think if Yiannis becomes available, he makes a lot more sense for them. But you look at what they have, like they have an elite defense and Kevin Durant is kind of the type of piece that would have really helped them in this playoff series that they had. Um, I think they traded for those Suns picks for a reason. I think it was for Deon Booker more so than Kevin Durant, but I I don’t know how you’re a Rockets team that’s the two seed that loses in the first round that sniffs your nose upward at Kevin Durant still playing at an allNBA level. Um, so I I still think it’s Houston and I do think some of the reporting could very well be posturing like no, we we don’t want Kevin Durant try to downplay the value a little bit there. So, you never know. Yeah. And when you have as many tradable young pieces as they have, it makes sense to downplay uh the value there. Gerald, we really appreciate this. Um, thanks for joining us again. Everybody follow his work. You’re gonna be want to follow it all off seasonason uh because we’re gonna hope traffic the hell out of this thing even though you said Houston. Har Gerald Borgay. Clearly, Kevin Durant is still in play for the Miami Heat. But we have questions. So Ethan Skolnick invited Gerald Bourguet, who has been covering Durant and the Phoenix Suns for @PHNX_Sports. Where does he think Durant plays next season?

  1. If KD comes to Miami. against any team in the East expect maybe Giannis. Miami would have the best player on the floor in KD, add a couple other pieces and we're a true title contender

  2. Don’t fall for it Heat fans you know the playbook.. they will wait around as if they have a chance to get YANNIS and KD will be traded elsewhere 😂. Then Pat will be like “Let’s run it back with the same guys!”
