Yes, if you’re looking out my back window on YouTube, that is snow. It is May 14th and it snowed at my house last night. Cute. All right, here’s what we’ve got for today’s show for you. Uh today’s show is uh we are going to it’s packed. So Oklahoma City’s unbelievable last night. Breaks my heart. I hate them more than anything on the planet and it didn’t work out for me last night. Cleveland, we’ll talk about them being eliminated. We have the new age of guards hitting the NBA. Combine day one yesterday. Bunch of results. two of the top five picks possibilities really stood out and a heavy rumor floating around the top five right now that we’ll jump on uh on the show as well. So, we are loaded with notes and news and thoughts and information, but we are starting with nine potential trades the Utah Jazz could make with the fifth pick of the NBA draft. And the question on all of them is whether or not you would want to do it. So starting generally on an alphabetical level, let’s start with the Atlanta Hawks and Trey Young. The Utah Jazz could trade the fifth pick of the draft for Trey Young. I really think they could probably get Trey Young done. Atlanta is in a funny little situation. They don’t seem to kind of have the answer on where they’re heading. They don’t own all their picks. And Utah Trey Young at $43 million a year. And again, we’ve kind of done this enough. I don’t want to go into what each trade would be, but just so you have kind of the con make sure you have the concept here when it gets to the Jazz. John Collins situation is you could agree that he either John Collins’s date is June 27th. The draft is June 25th. So John Collins could either opt in or agree to an extension and then you could deal him post July 1st of the next business year. Okay. Um so he either opts in or you get him an extension and then he could be traded. Otherwise, you cannot trade John Collins until he’s opted in. So just John Collins $26.5 million contract is not tradable until he opts in. So the Jazz trade pieces are Colin Ston’s $19 million contract. Jordan Clarkson’s $14 million contract just from contract standpoint. Kenyon Martin Jr. is actually interesting because he’s actually an $8 million contract. And then you’re trading any of your young pieces whose contracts aren’t very big, right? So Keont is at four and any of those type of players are there um as well. Kenyan Martin, by the way, I think you might have to guarantee him for the next year. Uh I think he’s non-G guaranteed next year, so I’m not it I’m not entirely sure how his trade works. And then Lowry is sitting around 46 million. So some of these deals are hard to get done. So, let’s walk through it. First thing is if the Jazz were to trade, make a trade and you trade. So, the first player alphabetically started with Atlanta, we go Trey Young and Trey Young has one year at 46 million, a player option on the next year at 48. So, you you don’t have any guarantee that you’re getting Trey Young for more than a year. He could player option, become a free agent, and leave Utah. You could also have to decide you want Trey Young. I think Trey Young is a walking top 10 offense. I think he’s remarkable. I don’t know that I think Trey Young is worth bailing on the rebuild. For 46 million, it’s gets hard for the Jazz to get there without John Collins. Ston and Clarkson, just so you kind of always have it, is at 33 million. And then you got to piece pieces together. So, the first name Trey Young. Would you be willing to would you bail on the rebuild for Trey Young. He’s And then you have you’re trying to well probably keeping Lowry and I don’t know how good you actually are at that point. You’ve and you’ve given up the fifth pick of the draft. Staying in alphabetical order, your next one is interesting. It’s what the heck is Boston going to do after they lose tonight? And I don’t know whether they trade Jaylen Brown, but Jaylen Brown is on the books for 53, 57,61, and 64 million the next four years. I wonder if there’s a deal where they would trade Jason Tatum is out for a year. He is not Jason Tatum. Earliest time that he would play would be 9 or 10, 12 months. that gets him too late in the season. I do not think you’re going to see Jason Tatum next year. I the Jason Tatum ruptured Achilles is a franchise changing route for the Boston Celtics. On Jaylen Brown, I don’t know if you have to trade the fifth pick of the draft on Jaylen Brown. You might be playing a money game with them in some way where you do maybe something with Lowry, but Lowry, frankly, and Chris Appzingis are somewhat redundant. But Boston, I think, is in the market now as a possible trade team. Okay, staying alphabetically, LaMelo Ball. LaMelo Ball is signed for 37, 40, 43, and 46 for the next four years. You could get LaMelo Ball done with basically Colin Ston, Jordan Clarkson in the fifth pick. They might want Kee George. They might want another piece of there. It lets Charlotte completely restart with new Charles Lee in his second year, new management, new ownership. They get out of the LaMelo Ball era and you have to decide whether you think LaMelo Ball can ever play winning basketball. We will not get a player with the fifth pick of the draft as talented as LaMelo Ball. This one I’m a little bit more willing to talk about. The risk level much higher. He’s got four years left on his deal. The fact that he’s a big money player doesn’t really bother me. I’m not sure it bails the rebuild. I think it actually just gives you a great potential player who’s a little older and if he puts it together is more ready to go and is probably better than anything you can get with a fifth pick in the draft. Risk is higher. LaMelo is still a real mystery, but the kid can really play. He plays in his own weird way. Can you get him into a team concept? And frankly, he’s shown that in Charlotte, you can still go through the process of getting a good draft pick while having LaMelo Ball on your roster, but you would be suddenly have one of the major pieces. Staying alphabetically, would Cleveland move Darius Garland? Cleveland may have lost this. The concern all year on Cleveland is that their guards were just too little. And when I watched late in the fourth quarter, Tyresese Halbertton just bogart Darius Garland into the middle of the paint made me wonder. Darius Garland’s got three years left on his dra on his contract after this one. 39, 42, and 44. He’s 25 years old. Is he good enough to give up the fifth pick for you? That’s his quality. Yes, he’s he’s a fifth pick. that’s come together. He’s an all-star player. Is it worth Is he so good you bail on the rebuild? I think that would be an interesting conversation. I don’t know that Cleveland wants a rookie there, but it would probably relieve them some financial burden that they have coming. they would relieve them as Evan Mobley jumps from 11 to 38 million next year. I think that one’s actually probably more in play than you think. An interesting one to me would be Detroit. So Kate Cunningham jumps to 3840. We’re not getting him. They have a really good book, so they probably don’t need to do anything. But the one that’s a little interesting to me is Jaden Ivy. Does Jaden Ivy really fit with Cade Cunningham? And would Detroit trade Jaden Ivy for the fifth pick of the draft? Again, now the Jazz would have to make an evaluation. Do you believe Jaden Ivy is better than the fifth the player you’re going to get in the draft? You would not be blowing up the rebuild at all. You would just be taking a player. You’d have to pay him earlier, which might be just fine. Actually, Al moving some of the payments might not be a problem. And you’d have to believe in a sick Jade Ivy, which I generally do. Former fifth pick of the draft himself. 6’4, 195, 23 years old. you signed him to his extension. He’s averaged 17 16 points a game in his three years in the NBA. Only played 30 games last year. His three-point shooting jumped from 33 to 41. His free throw attempts have dropped over the two years, which is a little worrisome thing to me. But he has he he’s got a chance and he’s probably further along. And there might be some argument where you’re bumping the timetable up. So you give up the fifth pick. Maybe you’re giving playing around with some other pieces in there. Some other things. These are, you know, I’m not putting perfect deals together. I don’t know if you want Jaden Ivy, Keonte George, and Isaiah Caller all on your roster at the same time, but that one’s interesting to me. And Ivy’s only seven to 10 million. and you’re paying Jade Ivy as a restricted free agent. You’re giving him an extension. He’s extension eligible coming up here in 2526. And if for some reason Detroit doesn’t want to do that right now with him because they’re not sure on Kate Cunningham, then that suddenly becomes an interesting deal. So I’ve presented five names to you. Trey Young, possible Jaylen Brown deal. That’s pretty complicated. Might not have anything to do with a fifth pick. LaMelo Ball, Darius Garland, and Jaden Ivy. I’ve got four more for you next on Locked on Jazz. Today’s show is brought to you by my good friends over at Intercap Lending. That’s Steve Carter. Thanks so much for making Lockdown Jazz your first listen of the day. Have you recovered yet? Yeah, not really. Okay. Four more players that you might be able to acquire with the fifth pick of the NBA draft. Is Tyler Hero good enough to trade the fifth pick of the draft for? Miami might need an entire rebuild. Hero’s got 31 on the books for 25 26. 33 on the books for 26 27. He’s just 25 years old. I do like the idea a little bit, by the way, of trading the fifth pick for a player. That doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re not still losing 60 games next year and drafting in the top five, but that you have a player who’s older and more mature and bridges the gap a little bit more. I don’t always love it may be working fine for Oklahoma City right now. I don’t always love having the 22, the 21, and the 20-year-old all together work fine for Boston too with Tatum and Brown. So, this might be a stupid thought on my part, but I kind of like the idea of having a 26y old, a 22, and a 20-year-old, and they work together with somebody leading with some maturity and get pretty ugly when they’re all that young. Is Tyler Hero worth that? Or maybe it’s Tyler Hero and a pick. But just a thought, Miami at 25 years old looking to spruce things up. Would they be interested? Toronto’s really interesting to me. Toronto has too many similar players in my book. They have Brandon Ingram, RJ Barrett, and Scotty Barnes, who all to me are the same. Mid-range Mavens. Barnes shoots the least well of all of them, but is kind of a 6567 point guard who might be the best of all of them. On the other end, they have RJ Barrett signed at 25, 20, 27, 29, two more years. They have Brandon Ingram at three more years. Are you really playing Brandon Ingram, RJ Barrett, and Scotty Barnes? And I’ll be totally honest. If I was Toronto, I would trade Scotty Barnes. If I was Toronto, the 30% three-point shooting of Scotty Barnes, while he still has, he’s been an all-star, he still thought of highly, he averaged 19 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, and he is about to get his money. I would get off Scotty Barnes. I might be wrong. This is just one man’s opinion sitting in a snowy house in Park City, Utah on a May day. Don’t misunderstand where this is coming from. But how many players are you watching that play in the NBA playoffs right now effectively that shoot 30% from three and aren’t seven feet tall as a center that defends the rim? Zero. There is not a player playing that I can think of, unless I’m missing someone in the NBA playoffs right now, who shoots 30% from three that’s a guard or a wing. If I was Toronto before I have to pay 38, 41, 44, 47, and 51, I would bail. So, that’s not the most alluring prospect of wanting to make you trade for the fifth pick of the draft for Scotty Barnes, but this is an all-star, former rookie of the year, former fourth pick of an NBA draft. Would you trade the fifth pick of the NBA draft to get Scotty Barnes? And if I’m Toronto, I might do that. Hard sell for Toronto to get away with Messiah. But if there’s a player they like at five and they’re getting some other pieces because Scotty Barnes’s contract, this would be have to be, I think, a July one deal. Scotty Barnes is at 38 million. Is there something there you do? Is it five and Kee for Scotty Barnes? And Scott and Kee actually matches where Toronto is in their process better. He’s 23 years old. You’d have him signed for five years. He becomes your cornerstone piece ball handling and you hope you can develop a shot. The Jazz have shown some ability to do that. Here’s the real wild card. What the heck is Memphis doing? John Morant signed for 39,42 and 45 million in the next three years. Desmond Bane is signed for 36, 39, 42, and 44 for the next four years. And Jiren Jackson is gonna get paid the supermax. And he’s probably not worth the supermax. I Are they moving off someone there? I’m probably not giving up the fifth pick of the draft for Desmond Bane. Would you give up the fifth pick of the draft for John Mar? Comes with a lot. Super exciting. Sells a lot of jerseys. Gives you a 25-year-old allstar. Certainly accelerates the rebuild. probably means you don’t get your pick next year. And the last and final one that is the most mysterious of all, when you trade for Zion Williamson, 39, 42, 44, three years left, you’re not getting a talent with the fifth pick of the draft that matches Zion Williamson. new front office in New Orleans under Joe Dumar’s. The word is that they might be trying to trade him. Do you trade the And would you have to trade more than the fifth pick to get Zion Williamson? Probably. So, those are nine players that might be available for the fifth pick of the draft. Trey Young, Jaylen Brown. I don’t know how that works, but I think that might be just too much money without Lowry, LaMelo Ball, Darius Garland, Jaden Ivy, Tyler Herro, Scotty Barnes, John Morant, Zion Williamson. Let me give you that list again. either in the comments on YouTube or on X or on Blue Sky or on threads. Let me know which ones would you want for the fifth pick of the draft. Trey Young, Jaylen Brown, LaMelo Ball, Darius Garland, Jaden Ivy, Tyler Herro, Scotty Barnes, John Morant, Zion Williamson. I think I would strongly consider LaMelo Ball, Jaden Ivy, Zion Williamson, Scotty Barnes is super interesting, but I just told you all the reasons why I like shooters. I like guys who can shoot. It’s where I think I am. I don’t think I want to lose next year’s draft pick. Honestly, it’s a tricky little game. I’m kind of willing to make a move, but I don’t want to do so much that I lose next year’s draft pick. Kind of crazy. All right. Who stood out in day one of the combines and few players that may be playing themselves in the 21st spot in the NBA draft? All right, here’s some combine news on the top five pick range. Trey Johnson and Ace Bailey shoot out stood out yesterday in the shooting drills. and Trey uh Trey Johnson was the number one player in the pro line drill and at a 37 and a half inch vertical jump. Makes you wonder whether Trey Johnson’s going to get to five. I would be very pleased with Trey Johnson at five. I’d be very pleased with Ace Bailey at five. And the real question then is whether you’d be very pleased with VJ Edgecomb at five. And if that’s the case, then you’re set. And I’m not like that’s the last one I’ve got. If I if I suddenly have the three, then you’re set because Dylan Harper, then you got five guys. Right now, I’m not totally certain on VJ Edgecom. I really do like Trey Johnson. I really do like Ace Bailey. Jace Richardson, who is probably not that high and probably too high for 21, had the best off the dribble shooting. Will Riley was a very, very good off the dribble shooting. He’s possible 21 out of Illinois. I’ve watched a little bit of him and thought he was interesting. Little tiny Mark Sears, who’s 510, was the best shooter of anyone out there. Uh Walter Clayton Jr. was the standout for Florida, possible at 21, had some good numbers and shot very, very well. Two players that have played the uh Cedric Coward uh out of supposed to be heading to Duke, but maybe not. Transfer out of Washington State. Had a very, very good shooting yesterday. May have played himself into the NBA draft near 21. Um, Yexel Lendenburgg out of Michigan, 22-year-old had a very, very good day yesterday. May have played himself into the 21. The athlete of the day yesterday at the um of the uh was North Carolina’s Drake Powell, who had a standing vertical jump of 37 and a half inches. That’s what most people have with um on a running vertical jump. So, that’s a possibility floating around. Um in fact, by the way, on uh Lendenberg, who I just mentioned is actually NBA draft net as the Jazz taking him at the 21st pick. Colin Murray Bulls had a um kind of up and down shooting day yesterday. Um, some good stuff off the bounce, some terrible stuff. Catch and shoot. He’s another one that’s floating around. Jace Richardson, I I don’t think he gets to 21. I don’t think we need an we draft another guard, frankly, at 21. So, I don’t know that’s a possibility. Same thing on Walter Clayton. Like, are we really drafting our four another guard at that point? Um, so we’ll see that. Uh, Jeremiah Fears was number three on the three/4er court sprint. another player who’s floating around that top five um area. Liam Mcnal out of Yukon had a pretty good day as well on some of the athletic testing which was probably surprising uh or was not expected. Um and so that’s one who float is floating around 21. Some of the names as you’re starting to watch combine stuff if you want to kind of just get used to it. We’ll start watching them and talking about them. Um, kids Will Riley, Illinois. Danny Wolf had a very good day yesterday out of Michigan. Um, Noah Enzyme out of France or out of Germany I think is a kid there. Joah Behinger, another foreign kid. Liam McNell I just mentioned. Austin Newell out of George is a big guy. Uh, Thomas Sorber out of Georgetown’s a big guy. Meat Clifford’s another guard. Um, and then a kid out of Real Euro League, Huo Gonzalez. And then Walter Clayton. So, those will be kind of eight or nine names to start think hearing about 21. Um, they’re kind of moving up draft boards or floating around there. It’ll be interesting to see um what happens. There’s a lot of movement though in that range. Um, and these, you know, Cedric Coward was at 35, probably moved himself up the first round yesterday. Drake Pal was at 32, probably moved himself up uh to the first round. So, some of the combine news from yesterday, keep an eye on all of it. We’ll talk and keep listening to NBA big board uh to get that. But the of the guys that were keeping on, Trey Johnson and Ace Bailey supposedly both kind of jumped out a little bit yesterday, making people seem very excited uh about them. Um Cleveland is just the fourth team ever to win 64 games and not make it past the second round. Donovan 34 points, six rebounds, and four assists a game in that playoffs. hard to put anything on him, but it did not, you know, he’s going to probably get a little bit of this hit that he just has not gotten over that bump. Uh, last night, Oklahoma City was brilliant. And some of their depth really showed. Like, if you go back to our other late game watches, a lot of what we talked about was Caruso and Hartinstein. They didn’t have Caruso or Hartinstein on the floor with five minutes left in the game. Then Hartinstein came in for Jaylen Williams, but then Dort stayed in instead of Caruso and hit three huge threes in a row that really won them the game. But then he was the defensive matchup on Murray late instead of Caruso. OKC may have won the title last night with Boston out virt soon enough with Cleveland out and with may you know Minnesota is going to win that series. Uh OKC is the odds on favorite by a lot. They may have won the title last night. They they just made every play imaginable. Shay step back three. Beautiful play where Shay swings it. Dort rotates it to Jay Williams. He hits the corner three. They just made every play last night. It was not They were calm. They were collected. It was not a huge X’s and O’s thing. It was, you know, that series actually the previous one or two or previous games we did late game watch had just a tremendous amount of like really brilliant X’s and O’s plays. That was not the case tonight. This was much more of just guys. They just they just balled up and made the plays that need to. Most interesting one is Christian Brown’s scared to shoot right now and make plays late. So Chad Holm sitting in the middle of the lane. Harkinstein’s playing the big on their big and then Homegrren’s playing just in the middle of the lane. Makes it almost impossible. This is where the double big is getting interesting is that you play the the way everybody’s playing the double the single big is you find the non-shooter and have your big just not guard. You’re leaving someone open. This is a little different. You’re now playing a big on their big. you’re not mismatched and you have another big that’s sitting in there that’s being able to cover the lane and that I think we’re going to see more and more of as the league continues to get bigger and bigger though and that might be why we’re about to have the new wave of four guards in the conference finals. The four guards are about to be Hallebertton, Brunson, Edwards and Sheay as the four guards of the future in the NBA carrying their team because not sure you can get to the rim because of the size of guys anymore and the zone. 1. If J Brown is not an option, trade for Paul George's contract and swap the 3rd and the 5th pick. If the Sixers want Lauri, trade for Paul George and get the 3rd pick and keep the 5th. Regrettably, I'm starting to think Lauri does not fit our timeline.

  2. Mitchell is to share in the blame… he’s had multiple 1 seeds now and can’t get past the second round! For as amazing of a scorer he is his off ball defense is bad and he allows wayyyyy too many buckets on the other end. Mitchell is an amazing player but I don’t believe he’s a number 1 option on a championship team. Most I see him is a second option (on a nuggets like team) and a third option (on a thunder/Celtics type team)

  3. Trade:
    Markanen,
    Collins,
Sexton, and any other player, the 5th pick OR a combination for following lineup, if salary works.
    -Tre Young(PG)
    -Zion Williamson(PF)
    -Steven Adams(C)
    -R.Sheppard(SG)
    -D. Knecht(SF) or Cam Whitmore
Not worried about Zions injury history, he would be what lures others to want to play in Utah.

  4. Yes to Ball. Yes to Zion. But don't trade the 5th pick for Zion. You can get Zion without giving up a prime asset.

  5. give me jalen green for lauri and sign/trade kuminga for john collins [opt-in], key and the lakers pick.

  6. I say keep Lauri, trade the 5th pick, and do everything we can to make the play in, because that’s the best we can hope for.

  7. We didn't even play our guys last season.
Fuck this tanking BS and play our best line ups.
You can still make the play in and get the #1 pick.

  8. David, do a segment of your show tomorrow or the next day that dives into realistic expectations as to what it would take to move up in the draft with different types of scenarios. Such as: What would it take to move up from 21 to a second top 10 pick? Why wouldn't we embrace the tank with a faster rebuild by chasing higher talents in this draft vs spreading it out over multiple drafts that will be harder to get good picks as we improve. I actually think its worth going after some talent heavily this year. I actually think if we could get a 2nd top top 10 by giving up our 21 and another 1st from next year would be worth that, but I don't know what's realistic in what you have to trade to move up. If it costs too much it obviously wouldn't be worth it. At 5 I think we end up with VJ or Trey, if we could go after Fears as well I actually think he's going to be really good, but I could also see us going after someone like Queens, he has a very unique game. He will be really hard do guard with his back to the basket spinning and he's really intense. Like his fire. Of course the jazz might have some picks they like a the picks we have and maybe they're right, but I think we start getting more aggressive on moving up for stars. Had we done that last year we could have possibly ended up with Amon Thompson which I happily would have given up our 10 pick (Cody) plus given another 1st rounder for something like that. I would have given that Lakers 1st or maybe more. Amaan is a stud and he's going to be big time in this league, his defense alone is elite and he's just getting started. We should have been aggressive to move up if at all possible. We should consider doing the same to speed up our rebuild if the opportunity and talent is there.

  9. It was foolish to get rid of Donavan Mitchell. Three years of losing and nothing to show for it. I had to laugh my butt off when the jazz got the 5th pick.

  10. Would you trade 1st round picks with Washington they have 6 and 18? I would consider it depending on who is available. Likely Maluach would be my pick at 6 if Johnson or Edgecomb or Ace Bailey are gone.

  11. Would you trade with Brooklyn for their 8th and 19th picks for our 5th and 21? I would want another asset like a future 1st round pick to do it.

  12. Dude we have keyonte we don’t need anyone else Lauri is awesome collier is better than Stockton look at the stats I believe key is going to be the next great player of the Jazz organization
