From Seattle SuperSonics to OKC Thunder: The Rise, Fall, and Rebirth
They were terrible at first, but slowly built up into a legit team by the late7s. And in 1979, they won their first and only NBA championship led by Gus Williams, Dennis Johnson, and Jack Sigma. Then in the ’90s, they became elite again with Shawn Kemp, and Gary Payton. They made the 1996 NBA Finals, but ran into peak Michael Jordan in the Bulls, so that went nowhere. Then in 2001, they were sold to a group of businessmen, including Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz. Schultz then sold them to Clay Bennett a few years later, an Oklahoma City businessman. In 2008, the NBA approved a move to OKC, and Seattle fans were rightfully furious. The team relocated and became the Thunder. Just before moving, they drafted Kevin Durant. And right after arriving in OKC, they drafted Russell Westbrook and James Harden, making them one of the best young teams
