Ian Begley reacts to the Knicks uninspired Game 5 loss to Celtics | SportsNite
We now go inside out as SNY NBA
Insider in Begley joins us from Boston and Ian. Let me ask you
the question. You asked Jalen Brunson. What was the biggest
factor for this one? Unraveling for the Knicks in the third? You can point to a few things
aiming, one of them was I think the
Knicks let Miss shots affect
their effort on the defensive end, Tom
Thibodeau, mentioned that after the game. So that was
something that really hurt them. In the third you could
talk about, former, Nick Loop, cornet, 5, block shots, and I
thought he really got this crowd going here at TD
Garden crowd. Wanted to really push this team along to a
win without Jason Statham. There was a lot of energy in the
building at that point and then Jalen Brunson. The quarter Celtics 18 free
throws in the quarter. So a lot of factors at play, none of
them, good for the next. Boston, hit 20 to 30 led by
Derek white making seven, how are the Celtics continuing to get so many open
looks even without Jason Tatum on the floor. I think what you saw tonight was
Nick transition defense just subpar they were losing
guys in transition. They talked afterward about the
communication being poor. The effort being poor outside again. Miss shots may be
impacting, guys efforts on that end, but they got lost in transition.
Them that led to a lot of open looks for Boston, Boston
shooting it really well from Beyond The Arc. Derek white in
particular, he’s hurt them. A lot early in these games last
three games in the series car, Earl Anthony towns ended
with 19. Thanks in large part to eight free throws. But Ian
just three attempts from behind the arc for towns. Why is he
getting more? Looks from Deep. Well what you’re seeing is
Celtics go small on him and then they’re shading Luke kornet
as a second Defender to him. So important conversation
after the game Jalen Brunson said because
they’re sending the second Defender there. If he’s
aggressive, it’s good for us karl-anthony towns saying I was
just following the game playing trying to do my best in terms of what we had
mapped out. And he talked about trying to operate inside, just
not getting the opportunity to shoot out there. So that’s an
adjustment, the next have to make, we saw The make that adjustment in the
Detroit series karl-anthony towns coming out in game three
and shooting it really well. So maybe that’s another adjustment.
We see, going a game six in New York which to
me, it’s a must win for the next.
You don’t want to come back here Monday game, seven in Boston,
anything can happen. So the next really have to take
care of business Friday night at MSG. Alrighty, and let’s quickly
follow up on that, you know, this team better than
anyone, you know, their mindset. What sort of did you pick up on their
confidence level now that they have to head home
for game six. Yeah I think the confidence is
there and I think it’s there based on what they’ve seen
already in the postseason. They’ve had success in these
moments coming back from Bad performances bouncing back and
then playing well the next game. But really what? You’re looking
at here is how does towns get more involved? If he’s not
getting more involved? Are they getting open? Looks off the
defense has attention to towns. That’s what I’m going to be
keeping an eye on early game, six Friday night, and an OB
towns and bridges, a combined 10, 437 from the field. Alan your eyes? Who was the
biggest disappointment? Yeah, all of them but Jalen
Brunson. It is inexcusable. I don’t want to hear the excuses
about the referees, inexcusable that Jalen Brunson would foul
out of a playoff game, a potentially clinching, a playoff game with over seven
minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Now, I’ve never seen
five fouls in one quarter before from the Superstar and
that’s where the game got out of control in the third quarter
was a tie game. So yeah, I mean, none of those guys, a man could
shoot, it can’t happen Nick So healthy. No excuses to
me, but I’m gonna go on mr. Clutch in the Superstar. You
cannot put yourself in foul trouble in the third quarter of
the way that he did and then fell out with seven minutes ago. Yeah, I’m going to go with the
other All-Star here and I think it has to be karl-anthony towns.
Look. I know that McHale Bridges, and ogn. An OB had were
shooting nights karl-anthony towns on paper. 19
points on 11. Shots, looks pretty good. It comes down to three things for me. With Kat
number one, the silly fouls have to cut it out. They cost.
Tonight number two, he was involved in a lot of botched
defensive coverage has which we’ve seen from him.
Unfortunately all year and the number three I know there’s always talk about
is that the coach is at the point guard not getting cat.
Enough shots players have agency. He could demand the ball
when you got a small guy on you. You could take that
player into the post. He needs to do that more is that taking advantage of those
situations nearly enough? Plus he made cornet look like Dikembe
Mutombo which is what we’re going to get to hear.
Jonathan, can you explain to the viewing audience? Who
exactly Luke kornet. Is and how he was able to make
such a big impact in this game. Well, long time, Nick fans know
exactly who Luke quartet. Is he started his career with the next
and he was pretty good. He’s gotten a lot better look. I
know you’re going to look at the stat sheet and you’re going
to see Josh Hart, 24 points and made a bunch of Threes, the Celtics. Even if
he has a game like this are not going to divert from their
strategy of ignoring Josh Hart when the Knicks have the ball and that’s Luke kornet being
able to play off of him and muck up driving Lanes. The next
kept challenging cornet at the rim and cornet kept. Winning those battles. He is a good rim
protector. He knows that his stay vertical not foul and I
think if they don’t figure that out they’re gonna have. Maybe
some issues heading into the next game on Friday night. Yeah, I mean he’s blocking shots
on the perimeter as well to me. That’s the lack of ball
movement from the Knicks. Here’s the thing we can’t be
talking about. Luke cornet being a Difference Maker in this
series. At the end of the day, it’s still Luke cornet. The
Celtics had their heart and soul ripped out. When Jason
Tatum Went down in game four. So that look, Luke
kornet stepped up. I underestimated. The Celtics
and their heart in their
toughness. I also overestimated the Knicks
thinking that they would show up and play a good game and
instead Luke cornet turns into the star of game five. Alright, salad
start with you. What’s your concern level now for game, six
on Friday night at the Garden? Call me crazy. I’m not
concerned. I was concerned up to all even if they were up 3-1
before the Tatum injury, I would have been concerned once
Tatum went down my heart. Art, my gut. Everything is
telling me the Knicks are going to win this series. I think they
finally figure out a way aimin to close out a series at
home. Put the Celtics away when they
return home Friday night in game six,
On SportsNite, Eamon McAnaney and SNY NBA Insider Ian Begley discuss the biggest difference in the 3rd quarter, how the Celtics were able to get open looks and Karl Anthony-Towns’ continued struggles. Sal Licata and Jonathan Macri also offer their thoughts on what was the most disappointing aspect of Game 5, Luke Kornet’s impact on the Boston lineup and the Knicks’ concern level for Game 6.

Imagine if the Celts win 3 in a row ?
The knicks wld have to move to another state.
Urgency.
The Knicks cannot defeat Boston, the refs and Adam Silver.
Kat needs to be more assertive. Brunson didn't take a pay cut to sign a player that plays soft as charmin in the playoffs. Randle's making him look really bad right now.
Don't blow it at MSG. that would be extremely embarrassing
Feels like lazy reporting…
We have had worse refs. No excuse for refs. We played bad
Knicks better not blow it on Friday in MSG, they have to close this thing out in game six big time
Failing to make a shot should NEVER affect the defensive effort. Thats a childish and lazy way to react to the game. PITIFUL…. and its not the first time this occurred in this series.
Can’t downplay Kornet like the one guy does. Kornet’s energy and play got the crowd into it and he was a one-man wrecking crew. Give credit where it’s due. Knicks not going to go into the paint with confidence!
We the Celtics are going to New York with full force and win.
LOOK I DOINT KNOW ABOUT ANYBODY ELSE. BUT TOMORROW NIGHTS GAME AGAINST THE BOSTON CELTICS WILL TELL THE KNICKS FANBASE AND JIM DOLAN A WHOLE LOT ABOUT TIBBS AND THIS BASKETBALL TEAM THAT LEON ROSE HAS PUT TOGETHER.
Worst game I’ve ever seen, those refs totally controlled the outcome, sickening
Knicks in 6 they always bounce back after a loss as long as JB comes out strong the Knicks should win
