DRAFT A Player at 14 or TRADE the Pick!?

DRAFT A Player at 14 or TRADE the Pick!?

Spurs fans, all the focus has been on pick number two. Let’s not forget we have one more lottery pick. [Music] What is up, San Antonio Spurs fans? Welcome to TSR Sports. What a crazy week this week. What an exciting for week for us for Spurs fans. My question to you, the number 14 pick, should we draft someone or should we trade the pick? I’ll give my two cents in just a few moments. But we’re going to continue on from an article from Pounding the Rock where they talked about who we could possibly draft with the second pick. And we’re going to pick up with the 14th pick. First up, Carter Bryant, the 67 wing at Arizona who did measure just a little under 67 for the record. Bryant is a is a long, strong, athletic wing who shot the ball well in his freshman season. Just about a quarter inch shy of an inch of a 7 foot wingspan. I read that weird. And uses that length to be a real disruptor on defense. He may be one of the best three ND wings in the draft and he shoots 37% from three. Bryant may be a fast riser in the draft with his combination of size, athleticism, defense, and spot of shooting. He’s an excellent fit for our Spurs who could use more versatile defenders and shooters around Wemby. While I can’t argue with guys that can play defense and can actually shoot the ball. Up next, Thomas Sorber, the 610 center out of Georgetown, who was a little under 610. He’s actually just barely over 69, 69 and 1/4 in. I’ll get to why I’m giving out the uh the measurements here in just a moment. What the Spurs need a center? Yes, they do. Sorber is a strong, athletic, and long center despite his height. He has a 7 foot6 wingspan, and I do believe that is actually correct with a 9 foot1 standing reach. Okay, so our guy’s got some long arms. Sorber hasn’t spaced the floor yet, but his jump shot mechanics are smooth. His biggest strengths are his physicality and rim deterrence defensively. While offensively, he’ll be a solid weapon as a rim runner and short role playmaker in the pick and roll. Okay. And last but not least, Liam McNeely from UC N Yukon, the 67. Just slightly under 67 wing. McNeely may be the best shooter still on the board at 14. He didn’t shoot the ball particularly well last year, about 32% from three. He has been long been known as a three-point sniper. Pew, who has had hot shooting stretches at Yukon. He has size and strength on the wing, plays with fire, and comes from a great college program. The best college program there. Yep, Miss DSR. Defensively, he will need some work. Okay. And I think that’s actually all I have to say on my Yep. Okay, that’s it. So, short article. All right. So, and there’s five guys on the thumbnails here. I I want to ask you guys, are they measuring everyone with shoes on? Because man, when they do the combine, everybody comes up shorter. I’m also been keeping an eye on Rasher Fleming, who came up a little short at 68 and 1/4 in. He was originally listed at 69. And then Danny Wolf, who’s right above me, was listed as 7 foot. He’s actually 610 and a half. Uh, okay. And one thing I forgot to mention, by the way, if you watch Thomas Sorber’s highlights, if we were to draft Sorber sober, Sorber, oh my gosh, maybe I need to be sober to do this video. Thomas Sorber, I am. It would be team scream because I saw in quite a few of his dunks he was yelling doing the whole Kelman Johnson thing. I’m like, “Oh my gosh, can you imagine both him and Johnson on the court screaming together and screaming at each other?” We we literally would have to start keeping track of screams plus assists and rebounds and points and all that other good stuff. But anyway, at the start of the video, I said, “What would I do?” I would draft somebody at 14. We traded the eighth pick overall last year, but I like some of the talent that’s available at 14. I think there’s going to be a lot of guys off the roster. Bismac, Byambo, uh, I forgot about Charles Bassy for a second. We’re going to need a big, so I would draft anybody at 14, but a guard, not draft anybody. I would draft any one of these players, although I would prefer somebody 68 or taller. Rasher Fling has definitely been one I’ve kept an eye on. It’d be very interesting to see what the Spurs do really roster-wise moving forward, guys. We need a big, we have these two lotteryies, lottery tickets, if you will. It seems like almost a certainty the Spurs are going to draft Dylan Harper with number two which does raise a lot of question marks of fit when you got Fox you got Castle but selling him but I also agree with you guys 100% you don’t want to be the team that passes up the best player in the draft because of fit you guys are some of you referenced an old school one where and I do remember this I didn’t watch it but I certainly get the frame of reference in the what 84 draft the Portland Trailblazers because they already had a shooting guard and Clyde Drexler needed a big and he drafted Sam Buoie who was pretty much a bust and bypassed Michael Jordan who went third overall and became only the greatest basketball player on the planet. So I’m not saying Dylan Harper’s going to be the greatest thing, you know, the next Michael Jordan, but I understand if there’s a talent that and from what I understand in this draft, you know, it’s Cooper flag, it’s Dylan Harper, and then it’s everybody else. And if that’s there’s that much distance in the prospects, then I’m all in on Harper. It just it kind of I don’t get the fit. What I do know, what I do know is we need size on the court. We can’t have Wendy be the only big out there. It’s just not going to work. We saw it last year when he came off the court. The team got destroyed. When he went down with injury, we’re getting out rebounded left and right. People were dunking on us left and right. We need to get a big and I I like some of the bigs here. My question is which one? I honestly don’t know. I’ve seen some good things about Rasher Fleming. I’ve seen some reasons to not draft him. I’ve seen some good things about Danny Wolf. I’ve also seen things reasons not to draft him, which you know you could apply to any prospect, but those those weaknesses in their game are going to be much more glaring and there’s going to be more of them when you’re somebody that’s picked later in the draft. And let’s not forget, we also have the second round. Maxine Reo is a name a player we’ve talked about a lot on this channel. We pick 38th in the second round. I see some mocks having him go higher. I see some draft boards having him lower. He might be available at 38, maybe not. But if this is a player the Spurs really want, and I’m certainly up for it, another French player that’s also played with Wendy, I I believe correct, maybe with the 8 million second round picks we have, and I think next year we have five second round, four or five second round picks, which we’re never going to use them all. Take your own second round pick, give him another one, and move up in the second round. Why not? We don’t really, we talk a lot about moving up on the first round and doing this and doing that. Let’s not forget the second round has some quality players. Hello, Mano Ginobi. uh Nicole Joic you I mean not saying we’re going to find that type of player in the second round but sometimes you can find a really good player and we need a big and he certainly fits the bill. There’s also the question what’s going to happen in the offseason. Will he make any trades? Who will come back? I think I have said I think I said earlier in the video I think a lot of guys are going to be gone off this roster. Bassie, Byambo, Mamu’s a giant question mark. That’s three of our bigger players right there. I don’t see a world where Brandon comes back or or Wesling. I think the Spurs picked up their contracts for next year, but they also might still be options. I honestly I don’t know on that one because right now I’m just kind of off the cuff. I didn’t plan for this part of the video. If we draft Harper, we don’t need we don’t need Brandon. We don’t need Wesley. And a lot of you saying we don’t need Vel. And I like Devin. I just I I don’t we we have too many wings and and Harper’s just going to give us a plus one on there. So, we got to start subtracting. Chris Paul probably won’t be back and he would save us 10 million on the cap. And that’s one thing we have to remember too. I say this on every video because I I need I want folks to remember the salary cap is something you have to pay attention to with our team. We just can’t you know I’ve seen some folks say let’s bring in Giannis and KD. I’m like the Spurs are not a franchise. That’s not going to blow away the salary cap but then blow away the luxury c tax then go to the first floor and then the second floor. We’re not going to sit there and pay or they are going to pay millions upon millions upon millions of taxes to the NBA and blow up the salary cap. We’re not that team. The Spurs, in my experience, and fandom will try to be at it. May go over it. We’ve gone over it. I don’t think I correct me if I’m wrong because I don’t remember the numbers. I don’t think we’ve blown it out of the water when we’ve won had, you know, championship caliber teams. But we’re not the type of team that’s going to be 100 million over the cap. That’s just that’s not the Spurs. And if you have Giannis with his 50 to 60 million, Fox getting his 50 million, WHMY getting what, 40 when his extension comes up. Yeah, you’re gonna have three awesome players. They got nobody around him. Absolutely nobody. And then your franchise when that that big player brought in gets old or or retires or or gets traded or whatever happens. I I like the way we’re building now. I don’t want to rush it. I don’t want to make mistake we’ve seen many NBA teams do where they they give up a lot of assets. the bring in an older player, win now, and yes, maybe they win one and then and then the wheels fly off. The Lakers are a good example. I I mentioned the Lakers a lot. You got LeBron James, the star, they had Anthony Davis, and they had a bunch of young players, and they won the bubble championship. And you put an asterisk on you all you want. It’s an NBA title. If the Spurs won that year, y’all wouldn’t be a would you? No, you wouldn’t. And then they traded away all their young guys, a lot of their young guys at least, and brought in Russell Westbrook, a win now move. Totally backfired. And yes, Giannis Ant combo is certainly at this time better than Westbrook was at that time, but it was a win now move. And it absolutely backfired. And I don’t want to see our team do that. Try to play the win now move, maybe win one, maybe win none. And then in three years, four years, five years went back and be like, what the hell did we do? Because the Lakers a great example. They have not been in the finals since that championship. They keep trying to bring in stars, trying to do that, you know, win now, win now. And Giannis, KD, those all feel like win now moves. I don’t want to win now. I want a dynasty. I want 15 years of Spurs greatness ahead of us, if not more, depending on how Wemy’s career lasts. So, that’s that’s where I’m at. I’m rambling. Drop a comment on your thoughts on the players we talked about. Hit that thumbs part the channel and subscribe and help part Spurs community. I thank you. And as always, go Spurs go.

Who should the Spurs draft with the 14th pick? Is there a chance they trade it?

  1. For the 2nd pick, the Spurs cannot pass on Dylan Harper (such as the Mavs cannot pass on Flagg). He is by far the best available player and he is NBA-READY !!! He can already contribute positively next year.

Briant was interviewed just after the draft (you can find the video !!) and he explicitely said that this draft is so loaded that the Spurs intend to draft with the 14th pick !!
I don't know who the Spurs will draft at this position but I am sure that they already have a list of players to invite at the workouts in june in SA. Amongst it, I wouldn't be surprised to see Carter Bryant, Rasheer Fleming, Nique Clifford, Will Riley,… all the 3&D players at the SF and PF spots with size.

For the 2nd round, I know that I am very hot on Maxime Raynaud but, as french, I know a little bit his story and I am sure that this dude will have a long career as rotation players in NBA.
This guy is very smart. He doesn't need the basketball to realize big things in his life. He was in one of the best schools in France (Henri IV) from which all CEO, high-end managers,… come from.
He chose Stanford not for the basketball but to be in one of the best academic US university. His focus was not on the basketball but on his studies.
In his second year, he started to get a starter role and in his third and fourth year, he was the go-to-guy, almost qualifiying Stanford to the March Madness.
He declares recently in interviews that he is now totally focus on the basketball and is ready to do what it needs to have a career in NBA, especially the dirty work if needed.
He is also a friend of Wemby and almost always beat him at chess !!

His profile is very interesting for San Antonio because he is a stretching 5 (such as Wemby) [he is the 7footer with the most 3-point made in NCAA since… Lauri Markannen].
The main interest is that, when Wemby is benched, the Spurs could use Maxime and not change the systems used when Wemby is on the court. Of course, Maxime is not as good as Wemby but he could provide 15/20 minutes of good replacement.
Be careful of Indiana and Boston who will pick late in the first round. They will be also very interesting about the profile of backup stretching 5 of Maxime because their starting centers are also stretching 5 (Porzinghis and Turner).

  2. Spurs need to figure out how to get their hands on Kai Jones , and just let him let it rip with Wemby and others . He could be the best $2 pick up for this team ever.

  3. Essengue is not a bad option too…. He is already playing pro ball in Germany, not a bad championship … Plus he is French

Regarding Harper I red an article saying that he would have been 1st pick if it wasn't for cooper so it's a no brainer imoa

  4. I think Wemby is ready now. We have to capitalize on this. So here is my proposal:

    1) Get Giannis for Harper, Vassel, Keldon and first picks. We get Giannis in his prime for 6 years.
    2) During this 6 years – 3 first years is Wemby Giannis Fox Castle Sochan + shooters role players we find
    3) in 3 years when Wemby gets his max, trade Fox for new assets, Castle becomes main PG
    4) In 6 years, trade Giannis for new assets around Wemby

You always remain within the cap space and you get 6 crazy years now,
+ you get 6 crazy years after that with Castle and Sochan prime + the new assets from Fox and Giannis

  5. With how deep the draft is I feel like we should keep the pick and draft a 3 & D wing or a big man. It will keep the roster cheap.

  6. Everybody (almost) thinks that the Spurs suck at rebounding… This is totally WRONG !!
Pre-allstar (with Wemby in the team), the Spurs are 10th (on 30 teams) in rebounds per game.
Adding size this summer should help us to definitely setting in the top10 !!

But I don't think that the Spurs will play the possession game to win but more trying to be more efficient than the opposite team.
With Fox as the starter PG, we will be able to increase the pace to score a lot in transition. Blake Wesley will also be a good third option PG to increase the pace (I wouldn't trade him !!).
I am pretty sure that we will play much more like the Pacers than like the Rockets !!!

I know that it is definitely an epidermic subject for the Spurs' fans but I think that the Spurs will also be able to play smallball next season when Wemby is on the bench.
Smallball is a very efficient way to play in some situations (and only means playing without a center and not with small players).
Playing smallball with Fox and CP3 doesn't make sense (because you don't want them to switch !!) but playing smallball with Harper, Castle, Barnes, Sochan and Fleming (for example) definitely makes sense because all players are not small and are not weak defensively (no players will be intendly targetted in defense).

Warriors and Lakers manage to finish very well the season with smallball strategies (and switch-all strategy of course) even if some players are weak defensively (Reeves, Doncic, Curry,…).
All the end of season, Mitch makes the Spurs playing smallball a lot. Our players have learnt to switch (beginning of 2025, it was a nightmare because our players were in general not very good in off-ball defense). I don't think that this experimentation hasn't a final goal !!

PS : Our players seem to have learnt very well because we even managed to beat the Warriors at San Francisco, sending them to the playin !! (Smallball versus smallball).

  7. The Spurs need to pick shooters at 2 and 14. Plenty of good backup centers in second round Maxime Raynauld (7-1 and can play Power Forward) and Yanic Konan Niederhauser (6-11 1/4, Yanic is at the combine)(can play center position when Raynaud is at the Forward position) both can play WITH Victor.

  8. If the Spurs front office can somehow trade up for Maluach by giving up 2-3 future 2nd round picks or maybe a 1st round swap or maybe even a 1st round pick in 3-5 years when our Spurs will be championship ready and will be picking late anyway. If not and we stay at 14 then my pick is another super athletic pick in Asa Newell. If we go Bailey at 2 and I hope we do, then I think Egor Demin opens up a huge possibility who can play the point and is a jumbo guard and even some forward at 6'9". GO, SPURS, GO!!!

  9. would prefere spurs pick forward like Bryant for development. If he struggles first year no big deal. But man the second center position with dependable veteran like Luke Kornet. We need someone stable that can protect the paint for 15 min when Wemby is resting.

  10. I think that we shouldn’t take anyone at 14th and trade down to get Raynaud.
First, he is a Center (what we need)
Then, he is an excellent 3p shooter.
Finally ( the most important for me) he is not a “kid” like all the other prospects. And this is very important for the second rookie which will be a very difficult situation for a young guy. (Lot of money and only few moments when you are really involved with the team).

  11. Based on how the Spurs have drafted after 2020 I would say trade it. There is talent in this range but we don't need another Primo, Wesley, or Branham.

  12. Spurs traded the 8th pick last year, what makes anyone thinks they will keep the 14th pick, they will trade that pick for a unprotected case of Dr. pepper is 2032

  13. I'm not sold on Dylan Harper….it's something about his game that I feel would not be a good fit with the team we have right now….

  14. The question is Do we draft the best player or Do we draft the best player for the team needs….I'm not sold on Dylan Harper. I like VJ Edcombe game more than Harper.

  15. Bucks have an interesting situation because Damian Lillard will be out for the 2025-26 season with his injury, has a player option in 2026-27 and is an unrestricted free agent in 2027-28. Bucks also are in desperate need of draft picks. Best scenario for San Antonio Spurs is to work out a sign and trade with De'Aaron Fox, who is on his last year before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2026-27, to Bucks so that the Bucks will have a PG for next year. Throw in Harrison Barnes and a bunch of picks, including #14 pick and future picks, that the Bucks need for Giannis and Tyler Smith. This trade is successful via the NBA trade machine. This way, Spurs don't have to gut their roster and still stay relatively young. Starting lineup would be Castle, Vassell, Sohan, Giannis, and Wemby. Gut most of the bench but keep Keldon Johnson, Riley Minix, Julian Champagnie, Sandro Mamukelashviki, and Harrison Ingram. Sign Kai Sotto to grow the Spurs fanbase worldwide and have an additional Big. Keep the 2nd pick and take Harper to play PG and see if Bucks will settle for #14 and future picks. If Spurs can't get Giannis, maybe trade for Kevin Durant or Kristaps Porzingis.

  16. Unfortunately Brian Wright will probably trade it for a pick 7 years from now again. I’d like to get a 3 and D wing which the pick though
