What Was Jason Kidd Thinking When He Heard The Mavericks Were Trading Luka Doncic? | 5/15/25

How were you told that you had just traded Luca? I was told by my boss, Nico, um that we were going to make a change. But where where? Give me the give me the scenario. In the hotel. This is in the hotel in Cleveland. Um and so um he said the news was going to hit in an hour. Um and and that’s how it went down. And so, uh, when he told me, um, I started, I went back to my room to start figuring out how we’re going to use AD and Christie, um, because of this change. And so, so you found out you didn’t even get a chance to argue. No, there was there is no arguing. This is this is what was going to take place. Um, and so, uh, for me, it’s to to move forward. Um, from past experiences as a player, I’ve been traded um the day after Christmas, I think, uh, from Dallas uh, to Phoenix and uh, thinking they were trading uh, Jimmy or Jamal and they told me that they were trading me and so um, and so just understanding that the train keeps moving and uh, I thought um, my players and my coaching staff did an incredible job with, you know, once they heard the news of of preparing to keep moving forward and um, and especially with all the trade and the injuries, I thought we did an incredible job. When’s the last time you spoke to Luca? Uh, I text him on the that morning. Uh, and that’s the last time I’ve talked to him. How did he respond to your text? Uh, I don’t think he was too happy. Um, and just again from the experience of being traded, um, you know, maybe being surprised, uh, you know, upset, feelings are high, but again, uh, I love the opportunity of coaching Luca. He’s an incredible person and we all know his talent is one of the best in the world. And so, um, you know, again, my mindset is to deal with the cards that I’m dealt and, uh, and keep pushing forward. And I’ve always, uh, said this publicly and privately. I wish Luca the best. He’s one of the best players in the world. I thought you were going to say that you meet with Nico in his hotel room. He tells you he’s trading Luca and then you go back to your hotel room and cry, but but that didn’t happen, right? Uh I didn’t cry. I was uh more or less trying to figure out how we’re going to make this thing work, you know. Um this is a a big trade. Um but who do you call first after Nico tells you that you’re trading Luca? I didn’t call anybody. I put my phone down and looked at the ceiling uh and started trying to brainstorm of uh of how this is going to go down. Um I did not call anybody um once this uh hit and and my my job as the coaches is to make sure that we all are pushing in the right direction. Uh there was going to be a lot of questions that morning um from staff and players and and I thought Nico did a great job of uh of handling it by having the meeting and and for us pushing forward.

  1. Wow. You weren't even thinking of the player that just got blindsided right? You WERE ONLY thinking about you & Nico right? I was truly excited when you became the coach of the Mavs! I even defended you a time or two. But after seeing you in the interviews & now this video…I can't believe you're the still in Dallas! I'm so disappointed that you sat up there in front of the media & went along with all the incompetence of Nico Harrison & Patrick Dumont. I now know why. You're only concerned with Jason Kidd!! Do whatever it takes for Jason Kidd to come out on top. They traded the franchise player without anything in return. Tanked the season & put the remaining players in a bad situation. Trashed Luka & Dirk! But you're all about Jason Kidd!! I'm done!
