Shams Charania Provides MAJOR Update Regarding 2025 NBA Free Agency + Cooper Flagg SPEAKS On Mavs

[Music] Welcome into Mavericks Today by Chad Sports. I’m Jeffrey Cooperstein. We got a lot to get to on today’s show. We will start off though with Cooper Flags reaction to the NBA lottery when he saw the Mavericks won. We have exactly what he had to say in just a moment. But before we get into the bulk of today’s show, if you are pumped that the Mavericks won the lottery, hit that thumbs up icon for me. My bosses sent me a challenge and they said we need to get to 300 likes on today’s show. So, help me out. Help me look good in front of my bosses by hitting that thumbs up icon. Let’s hop right into what Cooper Flag had to say about the Mavericks and about the results of the lottery. He said, “I was surprised like a lot of people. It was kind of a crazy draft lottery. They got a lot of really good pieces and I think it’ll be a really cool opportunity.” So, Cooper Flag already believes that he’s going to be a Dallas Maverick. And if you believe the reporting of Mark Stein and Tim McMahon, which I do, it sounds like the Mavs are hellbent on selecting Flag with the number one overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft. It does not appear that they are going to trade that pick. It does not appear that they’re going to do anything else with the number one pick but select Flag. And when you plug Flag into this rotation that already features Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, and Derek Lively, it’s a really formidable starting fiveman. And then uh off the bench, you add the likes of Naji Marshall, maybe Daniel Gaffford, maybe PJ Washington, depending on what the Mavericks decide to do here in the offseason. I’ve taken PJ Washington out for now because I think he’s going to be traded for something else there. So that remains CBD. But Cooper Flag fits into this team seamlessly as a small forward that can do both that can play at a high level on both ends of the court. Um he’s what he enters the Mavericks roster as the best defender already. He can defend two through four at a high level. He can shoot at a high level. He can do everything at a pretty high level and it just elevates the ceiling of this Mavericks roster immediately. PJ Washington’s a really good player. He’s not Cooper Flag. Flag gives this team a chance to contend in the Western Conference pretty much immediately if this team can stay healthy. If Anthony Davis can stay healthy, and I know that’s a big if, if you get Kyrie Irving back in January like he’s targeting and he can stay healthy, this Mavericks team can do some serious damage in the Western Conference and they had Cooper Flag fall into their lap and this team really is becoming Duke South. You have Kyrie Irving and Derek Lively, both from Duke. And now Cooper Flag, going to be the third Dookie on the court for the Mavericks this season. And it’s never a bad thing to uh have a little pipeline from the Duke Blue Devils to your franchise. I mean, Duke, one of the most historic programs in college basketball, maybe the most historic program in college basketball, and having three guys from there, never a bad thing. And the circumstances that led to the Mavericks getting the Cooper flag is absolutely insane. It started on February 1st with trading Luca Donic away. Then everyone started getting hurt, including Kyrie Irving tearing his ACL. You had Derrick Lively having a stretch fracture in his foot. You had injuries to Daniel Gaford and PJ Washington. All of that com uh, you know, combined made the Mavericks falter down the stretch and lose in the playin. The Miami Heat, by the way, won the playin. If the Heat had lost the plan, they would have had the 11th best odds in the lottery. Thus, they would be selecting Cooper Flag, not the Dallas Mavericks. And then the Mavericks also won a coin flip against the Chicago Bulls. Josh Giddy hit a halfcourt buzzer beater for a win for the Chicago Bulls. So, the Mavs got lucky there by winning a coin flip where the Bulls had a 1.7% chance versus the Mavs having a 1.8% chance. And that gave them the uh luxury to select Cooper Flag. Not to mention the 18 out of 10,000 chance to win. Out of the 10,00 lottery combinations that could have been pulled, the Mavericks had 18 of them. And one of those 18 were pulled for the number one pick in the NBA draft. By the way, if you haven’t gone and watched how they do the draft lottery, you should do that. It’s posted on the NBA social media and it gives you a little bit of inside baseball on how exactly they do that lottery. The way the Stars align was absolutely historic, man. like the the circumstances that led to the Mavericks being able to be in a position to draft Cooper Flag and instantly put them back into contention in the West is pretty remarkable and I’m not sure we’re going to see anything like the last three months and change that we’ve seen from the Dallas Mavericks franchise. I just don’t see it happening again. And Flag is in some pretty rarified air too when you look at freshmen who have entered into the NBA draft. These guys won national player of the year as a freshman. These are your last four. You had Kevin Durant in 2007 with Texas. You had Anthony Davis in 2012 with Kentucky. I believe they won the national championship that year as well. Zion Williamson in 2019 with Duke and the Cooper flag last season. So, he’s in some pretty rarified air, man. I mean, Anthony Davis and KD are bonafide Hall of Famers. Zion not a Hall of Famer yet, but when he plays is absolutely fantastic. So, if you go by the uh by the historic the the historic side of things, Cooper Flack should be a pretty damn good player for the Mavericks. We will get to the Sham Shirania update here in just a few moments. But I do need to tell you guys about our sponsor of today’s show, which is Fanatics. All right, Sham Shirania had a little update for us and we kind of knew this but it all but confirms the Mavericks will be pursuing a point guard this off season. We know Kyrie is going to be out till at least January with that torn ACL and the Mavericks are going to need someone to uh to tread water until Kyrie returns. Here’s exactly what Shams had to say. He said whether it’s in the trade market or free agency, that’s a big priority for them. Kyrie Irving is targeting sometime in January to make his return. We’ll see which point guard they can have as a plug and play for them. And I obviously think the Mavericks need to pursue a point guard uh this off season. They can’t enter the season with Brandon Williams and Naji Marshall, maybe Dante Axim if he returns as their point guards. They have to go find an external option, whether it be via free agency or via trade. I do think Washington and Gaffford are going to be potential trade chips in order to go get a guard, but there are some decent free agent options out there on the market. You have the likes of Malcolm Brogden, D’Angelo Russell, Trey and Taius Jones, Russell Westbrook, and Chris Paul. All who of whom I think would be decent options for the Mavericks going forward. But there are a couple of these guys that I really want to focus on here. And I think that’s Malcolm Brogden and and Taius Jones. I I think both of those guys would be solid options for the Mavericks going forward. Taius Jones spent last season in Phoenix. And Jones is a guy who, yeah, he’s not going to wow you with anything. He’s not going to light up the stat sheet, but he had a really solid season in an otherwise very tumultuous year in Phoenix. And Malcolm Brogden, who didn’t play much last year, has been a guy that I know the Mavericks have liked for a very long time. Brogden played in just 24 games last season, averaging 12 points and four assists. didn’t shoot it that well in those 24 games, but Brogden has a larger sample size over the course of his career. He won six man of the year a couple years ago in Boston with the Celtics. So, he would be a really decent option at point guard. And then Tus Jones as well, who averaged 10 and five last year, shot 41% from three as well. Um, could you get Taius Jones for the taxpayer mid-level? You might be able to, I think. Uh, either of those I think would be interesting options for the Mavericks going forward. And if you do sign one of these guys, the options open with both PJ Washington and Daniel Gaffford. You could still use those guys as trade chips, but maybe you use it to clear salary to get more draft assets, or maybe you use it for another position of need that you may not have foreseen earlier in the offseason. So, if you do sign one of those guys, and I think you could, and you you could play those guys for the first 55 or 60 games as your starting point guard, it really opens up the options for Nico Harrison and the Mavericks front office to see what they can do in order to improve this roster even further. I want you guys to pick one to sign though down in the comment section. If you think it should be Malcolm Brogden type B, or if you think it should be Taius Jones, type J down below. I’m curious to hear what you guys have to say. And that will be it for today’s show, guys. Appreciate you for tuning in to Mavericks today by chat sports. 1. Unlistenable. Use a high quality Shure microphone. Why the big earphones? I'm out until this channel has better, professional sound quality. Used to really enjoy Chuck Cooperstien on the radio. Maybe he can suggest how to improve sound quality on your channel. At this time, very distorted and unlistenable.

  2. If mavs is pursuing a PG, it's easy. The 1st pick of the 2025 nba draft is DYLAN HARPER🤣. All jokes aside, Brogdon is the best option in my opinion

  3. 1:25 Klay won’t start ahead of PJ. Did you not hear Nico say
    “Defense wins championships”?
Who’s guarding the point in a lineup like that? It’s PJ.
Kyrie will be out front as well, sort of, and AD and Flagg will man the best help defense in the league. Won’t matter if someone blows by Kyrie, he will have LOTS OF HELP in the paint.
He and PJ will go over every screen and force guys to the rim or the elbow. Same with Naji, Exum,Christie and whomever we trade for (Smart?). This team will play a lot of 92-88 games.

  4. Cooper should beg to be traded. Why would he want to be associated with this corrupt, incompetent Mavs' organization and the players are dropping like flies with injuries. Cooper could be cursed and his career jeopardized by being on the Mavs team.

  5. 7:01 ……I don’t know how much better these guys are than our current point guards in the building. 20 or so minutes a piece for Williams and Exum doesn’t sound awful. Can we win with those two guys and how many more wins do we get with a Brogdon or Paul? It’s close for me. Williams and Exum played great in their VERY LIMITED MINUTES at the point.
Can we get Brogdon for 5/M for the year? If so sure. Paul for the vet minimum? Hell why not.
    That will be the obstacle.
Price! We also have PJ and Gafford REQUIRING new extensions along with Kyrie and Brandon Williams. If we don’t trade anybody it will be messy next year. We are so loaded in the front court it’s likely going to be messy THIS YEAR.

  6. Tyus Jones seems like the obvious choice. He had a great run with Memphis when Ja was out and we won’t require a lot of him. He’s so steady I like him more and more.

  7. Wings are more important than bigs you’ve seen it in the playoffs Cavs crumbled. Keep PJ move AD to the 5 bring Lively off the bench. Trade Gafford for a guard. Also Klay needs to come off the bench when Kyrie comes back and start Max or Naji for POA defence.

  8. Klay is the reason Luka is gone. Not his fault but Luka, Irvin and Klay wasn't gone work defensively. Last year we could hide him with #55, so i would bench Klay and start Cooper.

  9. PJ lost his starting gig. Wont be happy being a backup and too expensive. Trade him. Gaff already stated he wants big money. Too expensive. Trade him.

  10. Just because the Mavericks received a gift don’t start getting rid of key players. I don’t even want to think about it at this point although I am excited for the #1 pick. Go Mavs.

  11. You guys are stupid if you want to trade gafford and washington just because they get flagg, it doesn't mean you dont need those two. The mavs still need frontcourt depth because remember to dont trust davis and lively to be healthy all throughout the season. if they trade gafford and washington and one of davis and lively get hurt so your next big guy coming off the bench will be the allmighty dwight powell 😂

  12. Jeffrey

    Here is my wild thought
    – draft #CooperFlagg as no 1 pick
    – trade #danielgafford to LAL for #DorianFinneySmith and 2nd round pick. I am not starting the conspiracy theory and I like Gafford the dawg
    – sign #AlHorford thru free agent
    – trade #pjwashington to Cavs for #tyjerome assuming Cavs need big body. Wahington is the best especially against OKC

Starting 5 – Irving, Thompson, Flagg, AD, Lively
Sub – Jerome, Christie, Marshall, DFS, Horford
Depth – Williams, Hardy, Exum, Prosper, Powell

#nicoharrison please don’t screw it up
