Should Phoenix Suns REUNITE With Chris Paul This Summer?

Should Phoenix Suns REUNITE With Chris Paul This Summer?

Should the Suns bring back Chris Paul? It’s a good question, Stephen. As a player or as a coach? Yes. It’s smooth leg Friday with the boys according to Brian in the chat, also known as PHNX sons. Welcome in psychos and psychos. I’m Eric. That’s Stephen. The beefing box Shane back behind the Mac. Ding the button as always. That’s right. Press them up. It’s a Friday. We’re having fun for the first ever installment of free agent Fridays for this off season. We’re going to be talking about Chris Paul. Stephen also has another free agent name we’re going to be talking about later on in the show. So, buckle up, grab a snack, grab a drink, hit the like button, hit that subscribe button, help us get to 50,000 subscribers. And of course, if you’re listening on audio, one, you’re amazing. Two, five star reviews go a long way in helping this show reach more Phoenix Suns fans. Speaking of reach, Stephen, you showed off your reach this morning. We went to Jabs Boxing in Chandler and got some boxing lessons. How How are your knuckles feeling today? Uh, it feels sensational actually. Do they always fun to um exercise your knuckles? My knuckles are messed up. They are they are messed. I don’t know if you could see. You can’t really see. They look not bad in that shot really at all on one of those. Uh my knuckles exactly that. Yeah, a whole lot of that. What was your what was your favorite part of of boxing this morning? Um, probably working on the cross cross jab, uppercut combinations, you know. My favorite part was when we put up the profile pictures of our biggest haters and trolls of the show and everybody just went up and started punching them. I liked when we started kicking Max. Yeah. Well, when everybody got a chance to beat up Max, that was fun. Well, um, are you going to tell the people who you had up for your biggest hater? Or is that you can infer? You can infer who’s been my biggest my biggest hater recently. We’ll punch that like button and let’s start talking about the point guard Stephen because as it feels like we’ve had every single offseason since Chris Paul has left. Let’s ask the question, should he come back to the Phoenix Suns? Before we get into his stats, what he did last season with San Antonio, we know Chris Paul is going to be a free agent. He’s entering in year 21. How much more do you think Chris Paul has left in the tank? I mean, based off of last season, it probably has two impactful like winning impactful seasons left. Um, and if he plays 82 games in the next two seasons, um, in each of them, respectively, you might be able to add another year or two on top of that as like a highle six type of player. Yeah. Played 82 games this season. Let’s go ahead and take a look at his stats for those 82 games for the San Antonio Spurs. Papovic and Mitch Johnson. 8.8 points per game, 7.3 assists per game in year 20 in 28 minutes per game is absolutely absurd. Add in 3.6 rebounds per game, shooting 43.7% from the field, 37.7% from deep. If you bring Chris Paul back, Stephen, before we talk about the pros, maybe the potential cons that come with signing Chris Paul again, does he start for the Phoenix Suns next year? Yes. I would say yes. And I would say yes because it helps to mitigate the Devin Booker leading the dance the entire game dynamic that the Suns fell into a lot this season. You bring in Tyus Jones, you bring in Monte Morris, and how much do those two have the ball in respect to Devin Booker, and it wasn’t the balance that you wanted. And I think some of the issues we saw is because it was in his hands necessarily, obviously, so often as it was, and it became kind of a little bit of a burden at times in terms of having the ball that much and not being able to mix in his offball actions with the on ball. Struggled for the first what, two and a half months. Some people said it was fatigue. Some people um speculated injury. I just said it was a lack of rhythm because he had that he didn’t have it in his hands as much early on and then once he got it back into his hands more that’s when this um scoring type of stuff started to show again. Bran in the chat. Bren Tanahill, haven’t seen you around here, Bren, make sure you stick around. Love seeing new faces in the chat saying, “I’d rather have CP3 than Beal. CP3 is still a net positive on the court. Beal is killing them out there.” Putting the Beal stuff aside because we have talked about Beal’s oncourt production a lot. In simple terms, Stephen, for those who didn’t watch San Antonio Spurs, Chris Paul, maybe the last time they watched Chris Paul was when he played for the Suns or their new Suns fans who didn’t watch Chris Paul on the team, why is he still a positive on the court even in year 20? Um, it all starts between the ears and I think it that’s probably first, second, and third. When he was at his best in his early and mid 20 mid 20s, it was that mental cerebral side of thinking the game through in real time, being a chess player in real time, and combining that with one of the quickest first steps the league has seen. And one of the more um wellround one of the most well-rounded the big fundamental was Tim Duncan. The little fundamental was Chris Paul. And you combine that with the IQ part and you make for a player that is always thinking ahead and also able to stay in the advantage because of the athleticism. You get to his his year 40 season, which is insane to even say as a six-foot point guard, unheard of. And it’s still the cerebral dynamic, but also the way that he’s able to lead. It’s just so many there’s a litany of intangibles that honestly are maybe the biggest reason that allow for him to play as long as he has at this level and impact and winning the way that he does. And those intangibles of course are part of the reason why in our cold open the question was well as a player as a coach and the answer is yes. And I think it was Brian who put it in the chat before the stream went live that Nicole Joic is showing that you don’t need an established head coach out there if you have a cerebral assassin. Chris Paul is exactly that. He’s the type of player who’s going to tell you where to be, the correct spots to be at on offense. If you mess something up, if you’re not doing what you’re supposed to be doing as a teammate, Chris Paul’s going to tell you, and sometimes even as an opponent, he’ll probably tell you, “Hey, you messed that set up. You were supposed to run there.” That’s just the type of guy that Chris Paul is. If the Suns are going to go with a younger head coach, which isn’t confirmed, but we know that that could be the likely scenario that they decide to go down, having Chris Paul in any capacity around the franchise eases the burden on that young head coach for a team that isn’t going to have championship level expectations, but is still going to have a veteran team with Devin Booker and Chris Paul and and rookies whose growth and and ability to to recognize the game is so instrumental. for their future. You need a coach to help you out there. Chris Paul can help out all of that. Yeah. And it it again, it just eases the burden of not just the head coach, but it also allows for someone like Deon Booker to just hoop. And I think that dynamic equally as much as any other dynamic that he’ll be bringing to the fold would be something that uplifts the team, raises the floor, puts Devin Booker in a position that he’s obviously familiar with, and also again breaks up that mundaness of always having to dictate the offense from the initiation helm, allows him to get back to his traditional shooting guard roots. And I think that opens up so much more. And the other big thing with CP, it’s crazy to even be saying this in again year 40 season. His picking roles were equally if not more efficient than K Cunningham, James Harden, Tyresese Maxi, uh Anthony Edwards, De’ar Fox, LaMelo Ball, all these elite guards. Chris Paul’s not getting to the ball anymore. It’s strictly drop covers or they’re just switching it. And he’s still finding ways to have that impact if he’s not blowing past people. Now, a big part of that, of course, is the fact that he got to play with Victor Webbyama, and being able to play with Victor Webbyama is going to help your your pick and roll numbers, but of course, the Suns have different strengths as a team. We can assume most likely that KD is gone. Maybe we can explore a conversation where Katie is still here. And do you still pursue Chris Paul, which I think both of us would answer yes for sure. But with didn’t get enough time before honestly with a team facts with a team that is Devin Booker offenseoriented right you know that your scoring engine is going to be Devin Booker it would be so nice to have somebody looking solely to set him up as a true point guard. But I understand some people who would be hesitant. Not a lot of people in chat would be hesitant, but those who are listening or maybe who are going back at this after some time that would be hesitant because of the Taius Jones experiment, right? And the fact that we were saying get the ball out of Taius Jones’s hand and put it into Devin Booker’s. Is that a concern for you? Any crossover between I know they’re different as players, but they’re the same position, Tai Jones and Chris Paul? No, because they’re not the same player. Um, I know it it’s just easy to say apples to apples and say that, oh yeah, you have one point guard that hardly ever turns the ball over, you get another one and you can just kind of replicate the same impact. It’s not that because, and this is no slight or disrespect to Tus Jones, but you’re talking about a point guard that is solid versus an all-time great. M and the difference between that is all, as I started talking about with CP, it’s all between the ears and the ways in which he goes about leading. Some of those possessions where Tyus is just giving it up to Devin Booker and saying, “You go ahead and do the trick or the KD and say, “You go ahead and lead the offense.” Chris Paul is going to put people in positions and that’s going to help to mitigate so many of the issues that persisted with the Suns in the half court this season. That will help so much organizing the offense in the clutch. That will help a ton as well. But also Chris is not he doesn’t have to have it in his hands as well. I think that’s something that he’s grown into later in his career. A lot of that time in the 2021 season, he was giving the ball to Devin Booker in the finals and letting him go to work. But having him to bring it up and then get into that and kind of mitigate things like that, I think goes a long way. And the last big thing, he was still very good giving it up to Wimbeyama and being able to play and catch and shoot. And I think that’s something that he would be able to replicate in different context of play, but similarly with Dub Booker. I agree. And if Bradley Beal is playing and on this team, which again, we know the Suns are most likely going to exhort all options and trying to figure out a way to not have Bradley Beal a on the team and B on the court. Hypothetically, let’s say he is. Hypothetically, let’s say Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal, and Devin Booker are all back on this team. They all benefit from being in a lineup with Chris Paul in different and unique ways. Bradley Beal being on the court with Chris Paul might allow him to return to the mindset that he had in Washington. I’m not holding my breath, but in theory, you could talk about that. I think Kevin Durant and Chris Paul’s connection and how they benefit each other and especially in a twoman game is relatively self-explanatory. There are a couple points in the chat I want to bring up though. One of them is from Mario. Mario Not Bros 2 says, “We need a point guard that can defend. Period.” When we did our tiering yesterday, point of attack, uh, defender, point guard was up near the top. Chris is older. Like you said, it’ll be his year 41 season now. He just had his year 40 season, his 21st season in the league. Do you have any worries about Chris Paul on the defensive end as a starting point guard? There are if you don’t have the personnel to insulate him on that end of the court. I feel like the Suns most likely won’t. That part remains to be seen. I would imagine that if you’re building a roster the way as you desire to around Booker, you will have multiple defenders at multiple positions. So, they would naturally be able to play in lineups with Chris on the court to help to mitigate a lot of that. But even with the physical limitations that he might have, he was still like top seven, top six in steals this season, the deflections again, and that’s comes back to what I started with between the ears, he’s still as sharp as ever. Um, you look at what Draymond brings defensively. Chris might not be the athlete or have the size that Draymond does, but as far as IQ, communicating and being able to be a value adder in that respect off of that alone, he still brings that. And I think that’s something again being a highlevel communicator. That’s something the Sunsory missed this season, especially on the defensive end of the floor. Another good point brought up in chat beyond just Chris Paul’s fit in Phoenix and why the Suns would want him. It’s a two-way street. Jared asks, “If anything uh if why would Chris Paul go back to a franchise that traded him away and now didn’t work out for Phoenix while CP3 is in a better situation playing with the Spurs and WBY, assuming that it would be way more likely due to where these teams are projecting to go and resign with the Spurs, who are closer to contending it feels like than the Phoenix Suns. Why in your mind would Phoenix be a destination for Chris Paul? Uh well, for one, we know that the Suns have are not a team that has been shy about giving guarantees to free agents. We saw that as recently as last year where they’re guarante a dice roll in multiple ways. I don’t think that if Chris stays in San Antonio, he starts next season. And I think he values still being able to start even if he is only playing 28, 27, 26 minutes a game. And because of that, I feel like naturally there’s a there’s a marriage and relationship there where there’s familiarity in Phoenix. Obviously has a long-standing relationship with Devin Booker that preceded this time in Phoenix and has continued even more so. They were just golfing two weeks ago, I think, or something like that. Um, so I think those things play heavily into his favor. Who knows? the coach that ends up coming in to coach the Suns might be somebody that Chris has a relationship with as well just because he’s been around forever literally. Same thing with Kevin R that we talked about yesterday. It’s like of course all these coaches have ties to Kevin. You can’t be in the NBA for that long and not have ties. Exactly. And then the Team USA stuff as well. So if any of those coaches have those ties, there’s overlap in there, too. So there’s just so many things that make sense in terms of relationships that have pre-existed. John in the chat says, “Simple answer book.” I mean, it’s the reason why he came here in the first place. Reason why he came in the first place. Exactly. Another reason I This is not something I personally thought about. So, shout out to Kaylee for putting this in the chat. Says CP3 does love cultivating young talent. Donoso could inspire him. So, of course, San Antonio has the best youngest talent in the NBA and Victor Wyama, and we know that, right? But there is a youth movement in Phoenix on the slight end with Ryan Donosu Gdaro. Of course, are going to be looking to draft some other players this year. Draft stuff starts next week, by the way, for everybody who’s waiting for us to get into our deep dives. That might be a reason that Chris Paul looks at this roster and says, “Okay, I’m needed here. I loved my time in Phoenix. It’s close to LA, a lot closer than where San Antonio is. I know I’ll still be playing high level basketball with somebody that I reached the finals with the farthest I’ve ever gone in my career in Devin Booker. And there are these young guys that have this mentality. Oso has got a brain. I’m not going to say like Chris Paul, but a brain that dissects the game on a high level. Ryan has the motor and the energy that Chris Paul looks at and respects and it’s like, man, that’s what you want to see, especially in a perimeter defenseoriented player. And he’s also extremely smart. That could be a reason for Chris Paul to to want to come here. There’s another elephant in the room when it comes to Chris Paul and that is did he play good enough last season? 82 games, 28 minutes per game, eight points, seven rebounds, good percentages from the field, impact player on a team that was in playin contention before the Wanyama injury. Did he play himself into a contract that maybe the Suns wouldn’t be able to afford? I don’t think that’ll be the case just because it’s going to be on the shortterm scale. Probably two years max. It might just be a one-year deal. Um so I don’t think he would have outplayed the realm that the Suns could reach as far as the financials go. Um, but to the point that you made prior to this one, you look at his most recent stops, Oklahoma City, they how many times when you hear Lou Dort, Shay Gil Alexander talk about how they got to where they are now, unprompted, they bring up that Chris taught them how to win on a professional level. Hopefully in game seven, they they tap into that. Exactly. And if you’re talking about building a culture, you see what happened in Houston when he got there and the gimmick that they were looked at across the league turned into, oh, this is a problem that took the best ever assembled roster to the brink of elimination had he not got hurt in game six. We might be talking about history completely differently. Now, fast forward to Oklahoma City. We talked about that part. The culture established there. You see what they’ve built. You see where they’re at now. Look at what he did with the Suns. obviously in tandem with Devin Booker. The culture established with Monty Williams. You see where that got them. You see what what they were building towards. They lost the plot recently. They’re trying to get back on track now. See what he did with the Spurs. Obviously with Winyama, but the culture established the younger players and the way that they bought in and the what they got out of them, it’s just different. So, if you’re talking about trying to establish a culture and not have that all-enccumbent upon a head coach alone, there’s no better player that you could bring in to help do that that’s available and that’s in your tax bracket than CP3. And I completely understand everybody in the chat saying, “Why would he do it?” Because yes, all these things that we’re listing off, they benefit the Suns and Chris Paul loves hoop and there are reasons why Chris Paul want to come here, but there are a lot better situations, even if it’s not San Antonio, to drop Chris Paul into. And I do believe a lot of these teams are going to be lining up to sign Chris Paul because also with the CBA, we’re moving more into either you’re a max player or you’re a veteran minimum player or just a minimum player with some mid-level exceptions thrown in there. thrown in there as well. You know, Chris Paul might end up just having to take a similar small contract from wherever he feels like the best situation. Chris Paul still doesn’t have a ring. And I don’t love ring culture conversations. I think that they I think ring conversations belong when talking about the all-time greats, but not in discrediting them if they don’t get it, but more as like a and then some type of conversation. He might only see a couple years left. either his body can handle it or he knows he wants to go into coaching or whatever it is and think to himself why would I spend that time with a team that’s certainly not going to be competing for a championship next year unless what if Kevin Rant does stay how many times have his teams been counted out in respect to projections yeah and then they outperform those and now the learning curve is expedited my rebuttal to all of that is and continues to be how many starting points guard opportunities can you find across the league that have an opportunity to play in the playoffs? All he asks for is opportunity and you see what he does when opportunity is presented. He goes and makes the absolute most out of it. Do you have any teams that come to mind? The Suns are the only one that makes the most sense. Anybody else? Even in the Eastern Conference, I feel like there might be some sort of void, but nothing. You can say you can say Miami. I just don’t think he’s want going to want to go East. I don’t even think Miami is in a I guess the Eastern Conference is kind of a tiebreaker. I don’t know if Miami is in a better position to compete in the Suns. That’s the point cuz every team that is somewhat established has a point guard that’s probably been there for a year or two now, you know, that’s doing some things in alignment with their team culture. So, I mean, OKC if they don’t win this year, a lot of talk about Shay being a two naturally more than a one. And of course, they played so well together. He’s been back there. OKC of course has money. They have the draft picks. They have everything. the whole infrastructure, the whole nine yards if they fail this year, which is very possible as they play game seven against the Denver Nuggets who had a crucial game six victory. It’s maybe on the table that they would need a point guard, but if you start going down the list, I mean, James Harden and the Clippers, I believe Harden has a player option this year. He’ll probably going back to the Clippers. Yeah, he’s not going back to the Clippers. You look at other playoff teams, Denver, they’re not gonna probably need a Chris Paul, although maybe for for depth reasons, but I think they need somebody else than Chris Paul. You look at a Lakers, I don’t think that there’s a fit there with two ball dominant guys. You look at the Grizzlies, if they keep Jarant, I don’t know if there’s really a fit there for Jaw to play off ball. Spurs are a decent fit. Portland has a ton of young guards. The Sacramento Kings need a point guard. He’s not going to go to the Kings to compete. The Dallas Mavericks are going to be without Kyrie Irving for a long time next year. They might be a team that’s looking for a point guard to start and then be a backup if Kyrie does play uh at the end of next year to go with Cooper Flag and Gaffford, PJ Washington, Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson. No distributor in there, no floor general. So maybe Dallas would be one of those teams that brings in Chris Paul to mentor. But you’re right, there’s not a ton of opportunities out there for him to start. At least I think teams would still take him. And I think he and and if we’re looking at all of these situations, he tends to air on the side of familiarity with those type of decisions if we’re looking at his track record on that. And again, what situation breeds the familiarity that Phoenix does? Yeah. Obviously, it wouldn’t be the same head coach that he would be coming back to them in, but that one reason why he said he came is still here. And he’s a better version of himself now than he was two, three seasons ago. It’ll be interesting to see. I would love to bring him back. I would welcome him back. I think the last thing that we need to touch on with Chris Paul, he played 82 games last year, feels unlikely to happen again. Is there any concern with signing somebody who is that old and sure takes care of their body, but injuries always creep around it feels like with Chris Paul? Yeah, I mean obviously there’s inherent concern there once you get to probably 35 and up, but if he’s not playing that same threshold of minutes that he was when he was with the Suns playing around 29 to 30 minutes, if he’s closer to 25 and you have a viable backup or if that backup point guard is literally just Devin Booker and if Kevin Durant still here, he’s not playing point guard per se, but he’s still being the main facilitator of an offense from his pockets to the floor that he operates. race from. You have enough there if you have three primary ball handlers. And those three primary ball handlers are Chris Paul, Devin Booker, and Kevin Durant. Like, what more can you ask for? Most teams only have about three primary ball handlers. And if you build out the rest of your roster with those archetypes that we talked about yesterday, those players that can be connectors and things like that, a player that we’ll be getting to shortly, that helps you mitigate having that usage be as high as it once was as well, which helps you preserve him. also brings the usage down and the minutes down. Let’s put a poll in the chat. Would you want Chris Paul back on the Phoenix Suns next year? Yes or no? Real simple answer. But guess what? Free agency Friday is not just about one free agent. We’ve got another one. And Steven’s very excited about this potential fit. We’ll tell you all about it right after our first break. Oh, I’m so pumped, pumped, pumped for next weekend. I’m serious. Shane’s laughing. I’m going to do a little station, little station action next weekend at Heila River Resorts and Casinos. Wild Horse Pass was my location of choosing because we do all of our events there. So, I’m super familiar with their state-of-the-art gaming floor, their sports book, their dining options from upscale to approachable. But, I’ve never been able to go dip my toes in the pool. I’ve never been able to go sleep in a room. I’ve never really been able to get the full experience. And that’s why I had to do it. I had to go to Hila River Resorts and Casinos for a nice little station. Of course, I’m bringing my lovely wife alongside with me to show her all the wonders of Hila River Resorts and Casinos. Of course, there are more locations than just Wild Horse Pass, there’s probably one even closer to you. The only rule is along with, you know, the legal ones. You do you. At Hila River Resorts and Casinos, visit playadhila.com for more details. And a huge shout out to all Proshade Concepts I just saw. I’m a lucky guy. I just saw a ad for All ProShade Concepts with Espo in it via Espo’s Twitter. And you know what? Great acting all around. But what stole the show was the patio shade that they put in there. It was automatic. It was smooth. It was so so clean. And I got very jealous. It’s not just because, you know, Espo owns a home, but also because he has all pro shade con concepts coming out and taking care of him just like they’ll take care of you. And they have taken care of the valley for 20 years. They started making window shades by hand for family and for friends. Now, they’re the most trusted local shade company, voted number one by ranking Arizona for patio shades in 2024, a Better Business Bureau A+ rating, plus over 1,000 five-star reviews on Google. Call 6232041476 or visit allproshadeconcepts.com right now to schedule your free estimate. Shout out This ain’t Mike Bees. Maria, what’s up? Maria, Mark, Enslow, Stephen, you’re in the chat. Smash that like button. do it. Why not? I’m a little upset that you just said Steven’s excited for this next guy. I am excited for CP. That’s crazy. Listen, of course you’re excited for CP. Shane, of course you are a massive fan of this next player. I would say I might be the biggest. You might be, but I’m a bigger fan of the sale that we have of all of our merch over at gophnxuch.com. It’s not chilling, Shane, when it’s reality. In fact, maybe I shouldn’t bring this up because the deals are so good, it might put us out of business. Up to 75% off select spring cleaning items, 30% off all inventory items on the entire store. Go to gophnx.com, click that merch button, or of course you can go to store.allcityetwork.com. Disrespect is crazy, but we can continue on. Just had to make sure you let that be known. It’s true. So, Bees would like to know, Shane, what you have to think about all of this since we haven’t heard you on Suns in a while. How would you feel about Chris Paul or how do you feel about the current state of the Suns? Like, you’re asking me like a genuine question? Sure. Yeah. Uh, I mean, it’s horrible. It It rips my heart out to to think about this team. Every time it pops in my mind, I get sad. Um, welcome to PHNX. What I think about Chris Paul, I think that he would he would be a a valuable voice more than anything. like a guy that that can a true human reset button when it comes to culture. I think just looking at that aside from basketball, like I see a lot of people talking basketball in the chat and that’s great because this is a basketball show and the X’s and O’s, but in terms of like leadership and just vibes, you don’t think of Chris Paul as a excuse me as a vibes guy, but you you do think of him as somebody who can help the vibes by, you know, leading and that’s what he did here. and and people always want to talk about him as a teammate and if he’s a good teammate, if he’s a whatever teammate, it doesn’t matter what type of teammate he is as long as it contributes to a bump. And we all know the famous Chris Paul bump. It happens. It’s a real thing. So it’s true. More bumps than a frat bathroom. Bees or the Timberwolves game or the Timberwolves is John Oon. B says fax Shane. Brian says let Shane cook the world’s number one basketeer Shane Defbach on the ones and twos today. Good to have you around Shane. Sorry this team depresses you so much. I I uh Is it really good to have me around because I forgot to start the poll in the chat. So, give me one second. I’ll get you the answer. So busy. He was so busy thinking about what he’s going to say about this next free agent. Stephen, introduce our our next free agent for free agency Fridays. All right. So, um this shouldn’t be a surprise for all the people that have been in the chat consistently all season long. When we were talking about trade targets, when we were talking about free agents before the season started, before he actually got signed, I was saying that I hope the Suns brought him in. Unfortunately, they did not. He was very much affordable, so it wasn’t that problem. But maybe they just didn’t have first dibs in the order of waiver waiver pickups and whatnot. But the dancing bear, maybe one of the most fun nicknames across the entire league, Gershon Yabusle. Woo! Shane. Shane, calm down. Calm down. Too excited behind the back. A 68. Okay, Noah. Number two. A 68 forward that can double as a small ball center or just a not so small center. 71 wingspan. Surprising athleticism both laterally and vertically. an IQ and feel for the game that stands out. Like what more what more could you ask for from the forward position? And again, we talked about a lot of players yesterday being able to bring all of the different archetypes we spoke to into one type of dynamic. Few players check that box off in particular than Gershan Yabusellle does. And got a lot to say here, but I’mma kick it to you. Love Gershan Yabusle. I think as a player he would fit perfectly alongside Devin Booker. I think he could play alongside Oso. He could play alongside Nick Richards. He could play alongside Ryan Dunn. Bradley Beal if he’s still around. Kevin Durant is still around. Yabusell. Uh Zay says Yabiselle is bad. Stephen, uh take some time and send a message in the chat cuz I would love to see what you had to say. And by the way, it’s with the PH. I was going to say he must be it’s his first. I think it’s his first. So, I’ll give him a pass. But also, he must be talking about another Gershon Yusle because he just completely butchered that spelling. Yelli, that part too for sure. Yeah, Zay, let us know why you think Yabuselle is is not good because both of us would disagree and and good stats good stats for Yabiselli this last season, Stephen. Uh really good stats. We’ll start with the graphic we have made and then we’ll kind of go to the other ones that I have um taken down. So, 11 points considering his role, considering what they were asking him to do in Nick Nurse’s offense and just generally in his team context last season. Not bad, especially when you look at the efficiency on that. Uh 5.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists, again for a forward is really good, especially a power forward. Uh 38% from deep, 39% on catch and shoot three-point attempts. At the rim, he was at 74.4%. and from three to 10 feet he was at 46. So that’s like floater/hook shot range where you’re getting up those type of soft touch attempts. So that shot profile and being able to be efficient within that realm of shots that he’s taking and you apply that context if he’s playing with Booker and potentially Durant, there’s a copy and paste dynamic there. Um, so I’m going to kick it back to you. What are your thoughts on that? Well, Zay says he’s old. He’s 29. Yeah, he’ll be 30 this season in December. Mhm. not old enough the French conversion maybe that he’s older French years but he he saved some time playing NBA basketball you know so save those joints he’s basically like a 27y old and the way he moves you would not think he’s 29 you would probably think he’s closer to 25 26 to be honest Brian asked what Yaboselli’s nickname would be though he doesn’t need another one the dancing bear exactly maybe the best nickname of all time I I’ll call it I I’ll give him one now. He’s the spirit animal of the blueco collar boys. Wow. I’ll go ahead and give him one now. Would he be the bluest of collars? He would be the biggest of blue collars. The rein the reinforcements, the muscle. How would you how would you like his fit hypothetically in a lineup that features both Devin Booker and Ryan Dunn? How does that help those two players? I would love it because it gives it gives Devin Booker, a player that we talked about again yesterday that checks off multiple archetypes in one dynamic. You need someone that says good screens. He has that hashtag girth with his size. Just literally takes up space as a hard screen to navigate. He’s also a willing screener. So, he’s looking to create contact that’s going to create an advantage for Deon Booker as he comes off of that. He’s a player that can pop and space the floor. He’s a player that’s effective in the short role. He can be a natural deep roller. He’s a player that can be a connector. He’s a player that can space off of a Deon Booker le pick and roll and play off of tags. Be an elite or not elite, but be an above average catch and shoot three-point attempt shooter. He’s a player that can put the ball on the deck. He has the IQ to drive and kick or drive and score. I can keep going. I think you might have some competition for Gershon Yabiselli’s number one fan. Yeah, I think so, too. I I I mean, I’m telling you, if the Suns had him last year, they’d probably make the play in. That’s the type of impact on winning that he has. I would love to see his fit. I do think his stats are slightly inflated to what he would normally have as an output. If that Philly team stayed healthy, you’re probably looking at not a significant decrease, but I would imagine he’s not at double digit points per game. Maybe the assists go up because he has better players that he’s passing to, but he took advantage of an opportunity. He played well. Going over to the Western Conference does make the competition a little bit tougher, but he fills so many different voids. You also said you have some stats that were off of that graphic. Yeah. So, 21 games with 15 or more points, 30 games with two or more three-pointers made, 27 games with three or more assists. In terms of points per shot attempt, he was in the 70th 70th percentile of the league. 84th percentile uh for noncorner three-point attempts for a big and on efficiency he was at 40% which ranked in the 70 77th percentile. 76 percentile for general three-point attempts for bigs players deemed bigs and he was in the 75th percentile for makes at 39%. Um, and then if we look past those and we’re looking at other numbers and nine garbage time minutes plus 7.4 that ranked in the 84th percentile or 89th percentile of the league this season. So you talk about impact, they were a team that was playing at a playoff level when he was on the court compared to when he was off the court. Obviously, like you talked about, the context of Embiid not being around slightly shifts those numbers some, but that’s not a slight to everything that he brings in terms of winning um as a player. Also, 375 assist points created last season. He also had 44 dunks, which would have tied with Kevin Durant for third on the on the Suns. And he also had 13 and1s, which also would have tied for third on the Suns. You forgot one really important stat. What was that? One poster on LeBron in the Olympics. I did. That was nine NBA seasons, so I didn’t include it. But yes, and that speaks to his surprise and athleticism. Someone that’s 6’8, 260, you’re not going to be expecting to get off the ground the ways that he can. Well, he’s grown his grain, his game a ton since he left the NBA the first time. That first thing with the Celtics was not is not the player that he is now. And I think that the Olympics set the tone for everything that he was last season for Philly. dudes catching Ali oops getting out on the open floor in transition running up running and filling a lane like he’s also Gdar or Ryan Dunn and he outweighs both of them probably combined so the athleticism the IQ the size he fills a void that the Suns did not have for to guard players like Julius Randle take on those stronger more physical forward matchups all of those things a switch big a big that can go and guard point guards if you need them to I’m doing that with the Suns or against the Suns both times this season What more can you ask for from that position? He He sounds like the perfect fit, Stephen. And watching him, I I would agree. He’d fit in really well here. Although for Shane, Julius Randall versus Gershan Yabiselli sounds like picking between your two children that you just love so much. You said, “Why not have both?” Dude, that would be I I don’t know if I’d be able to to watch that. I would I I would. Yeah. Now, if they’re on the same team, I don’t know if I’d be able to watch that. You wouldn’t be able to handle it. No, I wouldn’t. I would be overstimulated. Yeah. with Gershon. He took a pay cut. I believe took a minimum to go to the 76ers. I believe he was making overseas. It was a prove it deal. And by everything that you’re saying and by the eye test, he’s proven it. Stephen, everything you see, everything you know, you would assume most NBA front offices are generally aware of. Mhm. Why would he take a lower contract, maybe a minimum in Phoenix if they don’t get under certain aprons and come here when he spent the last year trying to prove it on maybe the only other team that was just as disappointing as the Suns? Yeah. Maybe because other GMs and owners are going to try to lowball him because they’re going to say, “Yeah, well, you didn’t necessarily play a role on the winning team and you also didn’t play the same role that you usually would because Envi wasn’t around.” So, I feel like that’s not something that should work against him. In fact, that should be it should incline people to think that he’s better than they maybe thought he was coming over from France in last offseason. But, I think that could be something that works against him. And that might end up obviously being an advantage for the Suns cuz maybe he might say, “Okay, let me go play with a player in Deon Booker that I know is going to be available that’s also going to have a fit in terms of role, context of the team, and opportunity where I will have probably more minutes available for me with the Suns and be able to kind of make some things happen off of that, improve my resume, and then revisit things going into the offseason after next.” Yeah, in the chat they’re saying it’s going to be brutal when he signs an MLE with somebody. Well, hope Do we know who the Suns duck that second tax and they get access to the MLE? So, that puts them in that ballpark, which is something that you would definitely hope that they’re able to do. I imagine there’s a 95% chance the Suns will have access to some iteration of the MLE. It might not be the full ML. It might be like 75 80% of it, but something tells me they’ll have that part squared away before free agency comes around. You would hope so. And if they do and they’re able to offer him the MLE, is that a contract you’d be willing to offer him? 1,000%. It’s the You think it’s a good deal? 1,000%. It’s the position, it’s the versatility that he brings. And if you talk about trying to play an evolved version of basketball, having somebody that can do evolved things on the defensive end and put that in tandem with the offensive end while also having the IQ that will translate to winning basketball playing off of and around Deon Booker. That’s exactly what you want. And he still fits the bill ducking the 30-year-old age. Yeah. Spurs have an MLE. Portland have an MLE. Uh Philadelphia has the MLE. So there are a couple of teams that could be using his services. Final thoughts on Gershon Yabiselli. What if I made you pick Chris Paul or Gershon Yabiselli at contracts the Suns can afford. So in a vacuum, who would you rather have on the team for just next year, one year, that’s it. It would be it would be Gershon. Wow. And it would be Gershon because of the positional need. The Suns need more versatility in their big room. whether he’s playing a four where he spent 20 I think 25% of his minutes and then the other 75 was at the five last season. You have a player that’s a tweener that can do both that can play with any player under the sun. He can go play with Jokic. He can go play with LeBron. He can play with anybody. That’s just how versatile he is. And that’s exactly what you want around someone like Devin Booker that matches it between the ears more than anything else with his IQ. Like I’m just thinking about some of the plays last season where he set a screen for Tyrese Maxi. He pops like he traditionally wants to. Sees that the defense shifted to that and goes from initially popping then just rolling and then going down the lane getting dunks and tomahawk dunks with two hands and things like that. That’s what the Suns need. And he’s also an energy booster. Something that would engage the crowd. Something the Suns have not had since Jay Crowder was around. Let’s put a poll in the chat. Would you rather have Chris Paul or Gershan Yabisell? So 76% of people said they wanted Chris Paul. There we go. So 75 or 76% said they would bring him back, but would they bring him back over Gershan? Because we got a couple people in the chat saying the Suns need a leader and that’s the void that Chris Paul would fill. Maybe if the encore fit isn’t as good as it would be with Gershon. All right, that’s going to wrap up our first edition of Free Agency Friday. Big shout out to everybody who tapped in for that. But our show is not over yet. We have a snake draft, a very fun snake draft we’re going to get to. Plus, we’ll talk a little playoff hoops if the time allows us to do so. And we’ll do it all right after our final break of the week. Desert Financial Credit Union and the Rubies. It’s a story as old as time. My parents, my grandparents, and myself have all used Desert Financial Credit Union. In fact, Megan has been putting together our family’s like ancestry charts, right? And I was looking at mine and I’m like, “Wow, everybody use Desert Financial Credit Union.” And there’s a reason why. Not just because it’s the best place to do your banking if you’re an Arizona sports fan, but also because for more than 85 years, Desert Financial has been Arizona’s largest, most trusted local credit union dedicated to creating exceptional experiences by giving back to the community, by giving back to the Rubies, by giving back to your family as well. That was Gerald’s last draft that’s popping up on the screen here. But we’re doing a draft today and it’s in honor of this video that Devin Booker put up on Instagram earlier this week. He was taking some BP. Stephen, and I know you as a as a former baseball player yourself, absolutely love to see a little two sport athlete. So, let’s just go ahead and take a look at what Devin Booker was able to do. Now, I don’t think you’re able to hear what he said, which is which is fine cuz I was talking over it, but he said, “This one’s going out left field for sure. First pitch is in the dirt. Bad pitch. Second pitch, nuke. Gone. Can’t even see the ball anymore. Bye-bye ball. So Devin Booker is clearly a two sport athlete, Stephen. So I figured what we could do today is we could draft NBA players that would be great two sport athletes. I have one fun caveat though. You can only you have to draft the athlete and then you have to draft the sport that they would do and you can only take one player per sport. So, you can’t draft a whole football team. Now, nonprofessional sporting leagues or non- major sporting leagues still count. So, we’re talking pickle ball. We’re talking darts, pool, swimming, Olympic sports, every sports on the table. You’re my question for you, Stephen. Modern NBA players or alltime NBA players? Um, let’s make it all time. Okay, let’s do it all time. Me versus you, Stephen. Just us two on the Snake draft today. I’ll give you the first pick if that’s okay with you. Did I win last week? I have no clue to be honest. I I don’t know. But I mean, would you rather the first pick or the second pick? I can go first. No problem. Then that’s that’s all you big dog. So, we’re going final poll. Gershon 62% of vote. Wow. There you go. 38. What do you want this uh draft to be called? Let’s call this the NBA two sport athletes. All right, Stephen, with the number one pick in the two sport athlete MLB player draft you select. I’m taking Will Chamberlain. Okay. For Yes. You got to pick a sport. You got to pick a sport. You can say let’s do let’s do track and field. Track and field. That’s a That’s a good pick. Obviously, Will Chamberlain did run track and field, I believe, when he was in high school. Probably one of the top five athletes that have ever walked on planet Earth. By council of all coaches that encountered him, they said he could have been great at their sport, whatever sport that was. I believe it. However, Wilt Wilt on the board for sure. Definitely one of the top picks for me. Would not have been the number one pick. So, I got backtoback picks right now. Give me Michael Jordan for baseball. I mean, that feels like an extremely obvious pick. And now I’m trying to think, I got a sleeper pick that I don’t know if I should take now or later. You know what? Give me Give me J.R. Smith golf. Okay. Jr. That was the pick that I’m like, I can maybe get that later. But I I’m going to draft with my heart. Give me JR Smith playing golf. Can we hide the chat, Shane? Fantastic. All right, you got backtoback picks now. I do. Let’s go. Victor Wimbeyama for soccer. Oo, good, good, good, good. I like that. It’s a good pick. Yeah, he’s he’s awesome. Just awesome. Great with his feet and you see the way position goalie. I think he’s al I think he’s more of like a striker. You think he’s a striker? Wow. Yeah. Have you seen him handle the ball? I Yes, I’ve seen him. Obviously, he’s a goalie. Literally takes up the entire go from upright to upright, but but yeah. Okay. You’ve got just some freaks on on your team for sure. That’s one way to put it. So, let me go. Well, actually, no, you have a second pick. I do. I do. Oh, I hope you don’t take the player I’m wanting to take. Uh, I’m torn. I’m going a whole lot shorter than these two players that I took first. Okay. And it’s going to football. I just want to know which player I want to decide to use because one was a all state high school player. Yeah. And one played basketball and football in college. One is a alltime great. One is a one of the better role players in league history. Mhm. Didn’t quite win a six-man though. Talking I don’t even want to say both names. Uh, heads or tails for me? Tails. Tails. All right. Nate the Great. I’m going with Nate Robinson. Played obviously football and basketball at Washington and was a start was a stud at both. Returning returning kicks and playing a little bit of slot and running back for the football team and obviously being a beast on the basketball court. Give me Nate the Great. And shout out for him getting that procedure taken care of. Yeah, that’s great. That was great news for sure. Okay, I got two picks now. Now, I am allowed to draft the same sport that that you did as long as it’s different from baseball and golf. My first two picks, Michael Jordan and J.R. Smith. The same player in J.R. Smith’s mind. Facts. Give me Steve Nash. Okay. Soccer or football, as you might call it. I think that one’s pretty self-explanatory for sure. And then give me James Johnson. UFC professional. Just do MMA. I don’t like the UFC. I like it a lot. Yeah. All right. So, my team so far, Michael Jordan for baseball, the Michael Jordan of shooting guards for people named J.R. Smith, J.R. Smith for golf, Steve Nash for soccer, and James Johnson MMA. Stephen, you started off our draft with Wilt for track and field. Then you have Webby for soccer and Nate Robinson for football. Your final two picks. Let’s go. Stephen Curry. Oh. For golf. Okay. I like it. I like it. Steph is a beast on the range. He spends a lot of time there. Mhm. And by all accounts, he’s almost PGA level. About it’s a PGA play as I said, he’s about as close as it gets to not actually being someone fully committed to that. So, yeah. Give me stuff on the range. That makes sense. Um, and no pun intended on the range part. You know how that go. Some things come easier than others. Give me Pat Coneton for baseball. Yep. Yep. Yep. Yep. Yep. Yep. Pat is a player that could have easily chosen to go into the MLB draft and he had teams lined up. Might have actually signed a deal at one point and had been playing in summer or playing in spring or some capacity like that early on in his career. Um, but obviously chose basketball, has made a career out of that. Um, but I’m I’m intrigued by who you got last and who we gonna go to these honorable mentions. So, I got a couple names that I’m considering last. LeBron James football, Jaylen Suggs football. These come to mind first. I I’m most likely going to roll with LeBron. Okay. Personally, I think. Yeah, let’s just let’s just throw it in there. Uh, LeBron Braun Braun playing football. I mean that that is to get Michael Jordan and LeBron in the two sport athlete draft I feel like is a is a good move from me. There are a lot of other names. Uh was it Luke Renau who became an Olympian volleyball player? It was uh it was Chase Buddinger. Buddinger. Chase Buddinger. My bad to air bud. Luke Riddau would be it would be crazy. Well that’s what I was like I know it’s a white guy. Uh Chase Buddinger dunk contest champion himer dunk contest champ. Yes. Uh, indeed. Enzo said you were loc low-key selling on your list right now. Do you want to run the people through your your five picks and then maybe give some some honorable mentions for you? Mhm. For sure. So, I had Will Chamberlain for track and field and to just do whatever. Whether it be high jump, whether it be long jump, whatever you want him to do, he can do that. Um, I had Wimby for soccer. I had Nate Robinson for football. I had Steph Curry for golf. And Pat Conson for baseball. I like it. I think you have a good team. Brian says Shane should have drafted. We didn’t have a graphic for Shane. So, sorry. Yeah, I I Did we miss anybody, Shane? Not that I can think of. I made a last minute decision to drop out of the draft. I was scared. I think DeAndre Aton for esports athlete would have been good. Uh, I have Michael Jordan, maybe I should have taken DeAndre Aton number one, but I have Michael Jordan for baseball, J.R. Smith for golf, Steve Nash for soccer, James Johnson for MMA, LeBron for football. This a Mike says, “How the f did nobody pick Charlie Ward?” Uh, I didn’t pick Charlie because I feel confident in the top five that I had, but Charlie obviously is a name that came to mind. I mean, Heisman and basketball player, but yeah. Did he play in the NBA? Yeah, he did play in the NBA. That’s so crazy, man. Yeah, it’s it’s wild. Alan Iverson is another name that came to mind. Quarterback in college. That’s the the discrepancy between him and Nate, which is where I was at. Lucas says, “I like how no one chose to go to the NHL.” Not think that’s a super translatable sport. Well, he for Dion for Dion. Dion wasn’t available because Dion didn’t play in the NBA. I’m sure he probably could have if he put his mind to it cuz he quite literally did everything else. He did a dunk cont. Wasn’t there like a celebrity? Yeah, I’m I think he went behind the back and went between the legs. Yeah. So, yeah, Dion was that type of athlete for sure. I missed some super chats. Let’s get back to those super chats. Thanks for letting me know. Bees be says with the $2 super chat, trade be for Paul George. Get rid of the no trade clause. I just don’t want more years on that contract with that with that pick. They the number four pick. Yeah, if you’re if you’re getting picks, then we can talk. That’s the only way that number four pick has to be included. If he’s not included, then it’s a hard note for me. Brian says with a 20 peso super chat, “My mom is crazy about dancing bear too at Shane.” Brian, your mom knows ball. I don’t know if that’s what he’s referring to. Real quick playoff update from last night, Stephen. Mhm. Those Denver Nuggets. Yeah, they did it. They they’re they’re they’re winning this series. Is the Is the champion coming out of this series? Yeah, I think the Nuggets are winning the whole thing. It’s so unfortunate. It makes me sick to my stomach. I mean, maybe maybe, but I just can’t see anybody beating Philly or not. Oh my god, not Philly. I don’t see Philly beating anybody right now. I don’t see anybody beating Indiana right now. Wow. Which is crazy. I I think this is my fault because when the Thunder went up 3-1 in my mind I was like this is insane. The champion we’re gonna get this year is going to be the Thunder, the Pacers. And this is when the the Knicks looked like it was basically over and it still probably is. The Knicks and uh who’s the 14? The Timberwolves, which is insane. Awesome. Yeah. Really cool. The Nuggets are going to win the series and they’re going to win the whole thing. It’s going to suck and I’m going to cry. Oh, Nuggets winning the whole thing would definitely suck. That being said, I did get them at plus 6,000 on our friends at about 365 a couple weeks back. We do have a game tonight. Boston, New York. New York with a chance to win this series at home. Do they? They better. Uh, if they don’t, they better two straight without Jason J. Better not go back to Boston. Don’t let Emanuel see that. I know that. I know that much. I’m gonna say yes. I just don’t know if this is crazy to say, but when you apply the context of injuries to two-fifths of their starting group and two-fifths of their main rotation or two-fifths of their best players, that gets tough, especially with the ways that New York’s been able to poke at them on offense and also sustain on the defensive end. Yeah. Talked about the shot profile conversation uh earlier this week. So, I’m going to say the Knicks going to get it done in Madison Square Garden and New York is going to be on fire until the conference finals start. and they run into the buzzaw that is the Indiana Pacers. I’ve been pretty bad with my predictions lately. I thought OKC would put it away. Thought New York would put it away earlier. So, because I’m rooting for Michaela, I’m going to take the Celtics to win tonight. But the Knicks, no matter what, to still win this series. Knicks Pacers conference finals. I thought it was very funny to see an NBA fan say that was bad for the NBA. That’s crazy. It’s like, all right, you ain’t been watching the game, man. It’s like I listen, I know I ain’t that old, but I still know that that was very much great for the NBA. We’ll see what happens. And of course, you can keep it tuned in to PHNX Sports.
