What’s Next For The “Cooper Flagg” Mavericks

Cooper flag to the Dallas Mavericks. The Luca trade package is starting to make a little more sense now if you catch my drift. But overall, in all seriousness, I’m very excited that Cooper is going to a situation where he gets to win immediately because he’s a winning player already. Something that really sticks out to me about this Dallas roster is my goodness, the versatility is endless. You can put out PJ Washington, Anthony Davis, Cooper Flag, and you got length on length on length. And something that stood out to me when I watched Cooper Flag, I’m not going to lie. I didn’t watch a ton of college basketball this year, but when I watched him in the tournament, I absolutely loved the effort he was giving defensively. Even in the game where they were facing a 16th seed and the game was pretty much over in the first five minutes, he was still locking up and giving so much effort. He really reminds me of Jason Tatum. Not offensively in any way, but the way Jason Tatum can guard a center, he can guard a power forward. He can stick on a point guard. Cooper Flag is going to be able to guard pretty much any position. The name of his game is versatility. I’m sure you’re going to be able to get away with him playing the center position in bench minutes and definitely with the Dallas Mavericks because they got PJ Washington who’s also a great secondary rim protector and rebounder. But immediately next season, if they can stay healthy, which is a big if, they are set to be a top three defense in the NBA. And honestly, they have potential to be the best defense in the league. Now, honestly, one of the first things that came to mind for me is I think this makes Daniel Gaffford very expendable. Tim McMahon from ESPN said, “You can’t have AD on a Max Lively on a big contract and pay Gaffford starting center money.” And supposedly Gaffford wants starting center money. I’m looking at this roster and the obvious need is a little more shooting and also they need another scoring guard, playmaker, another ball handler to take some relief off of Kyrie Irving. I think one of the reasons why Kyrie got hurt this year is just he had too much on his plate at his age. And clearly one of their biggest issues after the Luca trade was offense, but more importantly shooting. They were ranked 23rd in the league in three-point percentage post all-star break. So I think it’s clear that they should use that Gaffford contract to fill that need in a trade in the off season. I have two trade targets for the Mavericks. Now the first one’s pretty underrated. Like I don’t think people are going to be talking about him at all because he’s kind of been forgotten about. Anthony Simons. He averaged 19 points per game for the Portland Trailblazers. He’s 25 years old, so he can fit in the Cooper flag timeline a bit better than Kyrie Irving. His numbers were down last year, and I think it’s a situation for him where he’s just gotten tired in Portland because it’s really gone nowhere. But one thing is clear, this dude can shoot the rock over his career, 38% from three on 6.5 attempts per game. two years ago in 2023 averaged 22.6 points along with 5.5 assists per game. I think you would get the best out of him in this situation in Dallas. His biggest question mark is defense, but clearly they have enough defense. Another option is a little bit more obvious because the Lakers badly need a center, but do you really want to make another deal with the Lakers? But Austin Reeves for Daniel Gaffford would be interesting. It turns out he was averaging 27.9 points, 8.3 assists, and 6.6 rebounds per game in nine games without LeBron James. But my point is they need some play making, ball handling, shot making at that position to take some relief off of Kyrie. But also AD and Cooper Flag need floor spacing. They need shooters and guys to set them up or you’re not going to get the potential out of this roster offensively. Looking at the numbers also makes me believe that they’re going to trade Gaffford. It turns out Anthony Davis and Derek Lively, their twoman lineup this year for the Mavericks didn’t play much, 54 minutes, but they had a plus 7.5 net rating, 111.9 offensive rating, 104.4 defensive rating. And then Daniel Gaffford and Anthony Davis played less. It turns out they had a negative 2.1 net rating, 123.8 offensive rating, but 125.9 defensive rating. It wasn’t the largest sample size for either of those twoman lineups. So, you can’t take much from it, but I thought I’d share with you guys anyway. That’s pretty much all my initial thoughts. AD is redundant, blocks Flagg from playing the 4, is expensive, doesn't give what is needed (offensive creation for others) from a star on this team, is still a valuable player, but will see his value drop in the not to distant future.
The Mavs desperately need a high quality guard.
You trade AD and his big contract for a high quality guard and possibly some picks. Ideally someone young enough to be around for a long while. This gives you a well-balanced roster that is better fitted to Flagg's timeline with no major deficiency and plenty of strengths as well as room for growth.
There not going to be a scary team AD and kyrie aren’t making it a whole season and we haven’t seen cooper Flagg play in a nba regulated game yet
I don't think even FIFA is as corrupt as the NBA.
I'd do Hardy and Gafford for Reaves any day, but I'm not sure LAL would do that.
DAL needs to pull off a trade for a servicable PG to hold down the spot until Kyrie comes back, then to back him up.
I'd love them to go after a younger player like Simmons, as long as they don't give up picks.
The cheapest guard who can defend and playmaker and get his own shot is Lonzo ball. A Lonzo or Colby white trade would be perfect
Trading gaff will be a mistake. Lively can’t stay healthy tho he’s an ANIMAL. Having Gafford provides security. We need both of them or at least a gaff replacement
I like the thought of Simons, but not sure he really fits once Kyrie gets back. I’d rather go get a James Harden that can play point while Kyrie is out then slide to the 2 when he gets back.

I love Gaff, but if they could do a Gaff and Reeves trade, I am all for it. The dude is underrated, in my opinion. He is not the best defensively, but he hustles his azz off.

Another lowkey option is Collin Sexton. I think he's a perfect guard to get because he can score and create for guys. He isn't that good defensively, but he's such a dawg with a crazy motor, he's going to work his ass defensively and plus he'll have so much help defensively from the frontcourt it won't matter that much lol
Cooper's career will be cursed in Dallas. AD will be hurt most of the time. Kyrie will come back sometime in 2026 but not ever reach his peak again. They have no point guards or play makers. I'll never forget the Mavs robbed Luka of over $100 million. Thieves. I hope they come in last place for the next 20 years.

I'm gonna do you a favor. Cooper gets chosen by Dallas AND, don't think Neko has been back channeling to Giannis. Giannis wants out of Milwaukee. Think about it, you freed up dollars by not keeping Luka (which sucked, but done is done) you trade one or more of your bigs and you go all in on Giannis. Before you blow this off, who, I mean who, saw the Luka AD trade. What a roster Dallas would have, just sayin.

Scary is what would have happened if Nico got the appropriate picks and Reeves from the Lakers trade. This is just trying silly hype to make ourselves feel better — no way we contend with top 4 in the West, especially with Kyrie banged up and out for half of a season, in which AD will get injured again. Maybe next two seasons we get first round picks, too? AD and Kyrie will be so banged up, PJ will be gone because we don't pay anyone – just a funny little mess.

Fours because we are loaded there. More likely he will guard 3’s and bigger, slower 2’s. Won’t guard the super fast points either so just say he will be guarding WINGS. OCCASIONALLY SGA or Luka but generally just wings. Who guards him will be interesting as well.
