“MPJ is unplayable” – ESPN reacts to Nikola Joker went OFF 44 Pts in Nuggets’ Game 5 loss to Thunder

City did what they were supposed to do on their home court. They beat the Nuggets 112 to 105 in game 5. They go up in the series 3 to2. Nuggets will head back to Denver and regroup. Welcome to Nuggets Post Game live presented by your front range Toyota stores. Katie Winji, Chris Dempsy, and Chris Marlo joins us to break down this Denver Nuggets loss. Things were going really well there for Denver after that third quarter and then they ran out of gas. Yet again, it felt very similar to game four in that way. What was your reaction? Yeah, they the shop making is not there for them in the fourth quarter of these last two games. And um look, this was the stated advantage that the Nuggets had over the Oklahoma City Thunder coming into this series uh their ability to finish these games. And what is happening now as we’re watching a young team in Oklahoma City kind of grow up and finish learn how to finish these games while the Nuggets continue to struggle to shoot at the most important times. Yeah, it was interesting uh in the interview, the postgame interview uh the Thunder playing 10 players. The Nuggets playing basically six or seven. Uh Thunder had six players in double figures. The Nuggets had just three. Yok was magnificent. Uh but it was just sometimes you just have to say it. Thunder really really good. Nuggets were really really good. It was a fantastic game. One of the greatest games we’ve ever watched. Uh Nuggets just coming up short to ride some context to the fourth quarter too. Game four four fourth quarter you lose that quarter by 11. The one of 12 from the three-point line game five. you lose that quarter by 15 and you also go one of 12 from the three-po line. So closing which has been the sweet spot for the Denver Nuggets has not been the case these last two games. And you take a look at the fourth quarter tonight 34 to 19. Was it just the Oklahoma City Thunder had a little bit of extra juice or what did you see out there? Yeah, you know, I think from the standpoint of the Nuggets missing a lot of shots, you know, I I thought OKC got a little desperate. I mean, they needed to come back in this game. The Nuggets had a number of chances to take an eight-p lead and make it an 11 point lead or a nine point lead and make it a 12 point lead with three pointers that were missed really to start to hit some knockout blows. They never could quite get the knockout blows going. Um, and so then OKC started coming back and uh look, you know, Lou Dort gets them off to a great start in the fourth quarter, right? He hits three three pointers, they really start to get momentum. Um, it really injects a lot of life into the rest of the team and they had balance scoring up and down that roster um in that final period. Yeah, I think you’re exactly right. That was the key. D makes the 3-3s that brought him back into the game. Then I think the Nuggets got a little bit of fatigue when you’re playing six and you’re going against 10. Uh, you know, was it a game the Denver Nuggets could have won? Yes, but they just didn’t have enough down the stretch. Yokic was fantastic. But you can’t just have three guys in double figures. I think there’s some kind of a stat when Yokic scores 40 or more. The Nuggets are not very good in terms of the one loss percentage. We’ll have to get that get that number what it is. But, uh, you need more support. Brown kind of cooled off. Murray cooled off after a great third quarter and the bench was ineffective. Yeah, you know what’s interesting about OKC plays, you know, um the uh the prevailing opinion is that you these rotations just get shorter in the in the playoffs, right? Um and yet they’re playing 10 pretty consistently. And I do wonder um I I’ve always thought over kind of the course of my um really especially analyzing basketball, why more teams? Why is it just a given that you don’t play uh more? Now look, the Nuggets need more production off the bench. That’s that’s their excuse obviously. Um, but you can win this way as long as, you know, as long as those players are producing. Um, and OKC is just doing the same thing in the postseason that they always did in the regular season. Nicole Yokic was spectacular tonight. His sixth career 40 plus point playoff game. Time now to go all in presented by Vall Corporation Nicole Yokic. 44 points, 15 rebounds after having three games where he wasn’t his normal efficient self. much more back to Nikoli Yok doing Nicole Yok things tonight. What changed? I don’t know. He just got a rhythm early. I I was told by an insider that is his elbow is an issue. Now, how much we really don’t know, but once he started going uh it felt like he got into rhythm. Once he makes a couple of threep shots that opens up the driving lanes for him, he looked comfortable. I thought, you and I disagreed a little bit that they used him a little bit more on the low post and got him involved and that set up some other guys. Uh but uh that was MVP stuff and this shot would have been one of the greatest shots in in NBA playoff history if the Nuggets come back and win that game, but it wasn’t to be. Yeah. Yeah. Was, you know, look, I I thought he played uh physically, right? You know, he played through the contact that had uh you know, had that b that had bothered him so much. uh prior to this and he set that tone immediately right at the top right at the start of the game and um and then all those little things that he was missing right those little floats that are such a hall mark of they’re all going in tonight. So yeah, you know with him it’s just you’re not really stopping him you know if he’s not scoring it’s probably just just Nico issue not you. Denver Nuggets in the fourth quarter had just three players score. The Oklahoma City Thunder had six different players score in that fourth quarter. What David Adlem said, did anything stand out to you? Well, yeah. Look, I you know, I think from the standpoint of what’s happening in these fourth quarters, um I I really here’s one thing I hope doesn’t become a narrative. Um, Nicole Yokic was fine in this fourth quarter. There was not fatigue. That was not fatigue. He scored 13 points. I mean, if you look at him across the board, um all of the stats and only one turnover. Like there was nothing about his fourth quarter that suggested he was um tired, especially stepping back and hitting a Sombore threep shot late in the fourth quarter to tie the game. So, um look, you know, if if there’s going to be a conversation about how long a lot of the Nuggets are playing in these games, okay? And you heard David Adam say that’s something that he’ll relook at. And if he feels like, you know, it’s a real issue, he’ll he’ll say it. You know, there’s comes a point where you just have to do what you have to do to win a basketball game. And sometimes that means you have to play your your starters or your main players or whoever’s playing well, very heavy minutes to be able to get through a game and through a series. It’s just what happens in the playoff sometimes. Yeah, we chatted off Mike about that. If if you start the fourth quarter, Yokic on the bench, you’re up by what, eight or 10 and then all of a sudden they go 10 nothing run. Everybody goes, “Adaman, you’re an idiot. Why didn’t you start Yokic?” And if you put Yokic in and they catch up, then you’re you’re get criticism for that. So, I thought Yokic played fine. You got only three points from Aaron Gordon in that quarter. Uh it just Christian Brown did not score in the second half. Uh you need more you need more support for Yokic. And Murray had a wonderful third quarter, but he went cold in the in the fourth quarter. Maybe that was and to your point, both of you guys points, you know, you rattled off how many players scored for like that’s support around SH Jayen Williams, right? And so, you know, those players stepped up and made those shots uh in when they made a win counted. One more point on Nicole Yokic, too. Even if he is tired, he’s able to produce through that fatigue in the fourth quarter. And David Adleman is having these conversations as the game is going on with Nicole Yokic. Are you good? Do you need a break? And they’re communicating. He’s making sure that he feels good. I’m certain that Nicole Yok said, “I’m good. I’m ready to stay in.” This was Nicole’s 70th career game with 25 or more shots taken. His highest field goal percentage. He shot 68%. Yeah. 17 of 25 from the fields. He got he got to all those things that were he was getting to in game, right? You know, little putbacks, all the little Yeah. Adam made a good point, too. He said, “Look, I had the four time outs and we’re resting him. If they have coach’s challenges, that’s extra. The time outs are longer because the national TV’s in there. I I think the Yokage thing is a joke. What they needed was more support from the others. Ok, so let’s talk about one of the others because Jamal Murray in the third quarter did what he needed to do. He had 13 more self-exanatory of how to defend a player is you know where he’s going to be instead of he’s everywhere that you don’t know where he’s going to be and it’s hard to load up to him and hard to keep up with him. Um he’s right here and now we can do this thing to toal him. That’s such a good point. And so much of a scoring came when he wasn’t the primary ball handler bringing the ball the floor. You immediately get more tired when you’re having to do all of that work to get into that ways to try and sitation. Scott always says he saysur at his best when he’s going down.
