Both teams hunting pitches early in the count and so far it has not been an effective strategy. We’ve not seen a hit in the game for either side and the only base runner Christian Walker reached when it appeared Nick Marley missed strike three on the previous pitch. Otherwise, both pitchers would have perfect games going. Altuve, the batter, he grounded out on one pitch his first time. And the pitch to Jose is over for a strike. First pitch change up at 90 m an hour. Lighter so far has gotten out four times on the first pitch. Over the top comes Lighter into the plate and that one’s right down the middle for a strike. Altuve appeared to be determined to work the count but finds himself in a hole at nothing and two. Walker on deck and then Yiner Diaz. The 02 pitch is on the way. They swung on and fouled back. Houston coming into the game averaging four runs a game for the season. Slightly lower than that league average, which is 4.2. They’re right in the middle of the pack in runs scored. They rank eighth. They’re 13th in home runs though with 37 down near the bottom and stolen bases too. Here’s the 02. It’s lunged for and floated out to short right field. Adise Garcia drifting toward the line takes care of it. And there’s one out to start the fourth inning in a scoreless game for Christian Walker. The fourth inning brought to you by the Texas Lottery. Proudly supporting Texas Education and Veterans. Thanks to the Texas Lottery, Metroplex ISD employees can take advantage of savings on select Ranger games this year. Look for ticket specials on rangers.com. Walker drew that walk in the first inning and he has been the only base runner today. Only his 14th walk of the season and the pitch is swung on and missed. It is 0 and1. the former Arizona first baseman out of South Carolina. Two-time college World Series champ with the Gamecooxs 0 and one and the pitch from Lighter. That’s swung on and rolled out short. Duran up and throwing two outs and the Yer Diaz coming up next. You can experience a Ranger game in your own private suite. Premium views, exclusive amenities, memories made. Book online or explore your options at rangers.com/sweets. Diaz grounded out to short to end the first. That is Kevin Polar in right field today. Pardon me, not a dol. And here is the pitch. And that’s swung on and popped up into short right field. Out goes Burger. In comes Polar. Polar says he has it and he does as he crosses the foul line that is ruled a fair ball and it is out number three and Jack Lighter has another really quick one two3 inning. To the bottom of the fourth we go scoreless Rangers and Astros on the Rangers Radio Network. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. Hey, close. His last one against Kansas City, he featured eight innings and one run allowed. And though Valdez carrying that over into today so far, Hagerty uh led off the Ranger first by grounding out. He’s one of seven leadoff batters that Bruce Bochi has employed this year. And this is the third time that he has hit in the leadoff spot. Josh Smith getting the early part of the game off with the lefty on the mound. The southpaw lets it fly and Hagerty takes a look. That is down low for ball one. Opposing batters hitting 228 against Valdez this year. Lefties with a higher batting average than righties. 10 pitches inside, but four of the five home runs have been hit by righties. And we get a late strike call there. It’s a ball and a strike on Hagerty. Valdez into the motion and the pitch. It’s outside. Hagerty came up when Polar went on the injured list, but with Evan Carter going on the injured list today with the quad strain. Now both Polar and Hagerty are on the roster. Polar a right-handed batter and Hagerty a switch hitter who hits much better right-handed. The count is two and one. And here it comes. And there’s a check swing roller foul over toward the Rangers first base dugout. I’m going to count at two balls and two strikes. The Rangers heading for New York to face the Yankees after this. Yankees, of course, leading their division by four games over Boston and Toronto. They’re 26 and 19 going into their game with the Mets tonight. And much better at home than on the road. Two- two pitch. That’s fisted foul on the ground. Third base side. Yankees 14-9 at home. And for the year, they have a run differential of plus 84. That’s almost two runs per game. They’ve outscored their opponents on the [Music] average. No score here. Bottom of the fourth. Here’s the two- two pitch. And that’s lined to right. It’s a base hit. Hagerty shortened up with two strikes and he becomes the first Ranger base runner. And Hagerty is a threat to go over at first base. Here comes Wyatt Langford in a scoreless game. You know, not that we’ve seen all that much of Hagerty, but when he has been in games, he has given the Rangers quality at bats every time up. He’s the one guy that’s actually worked the count a couple of times here against Valdez. And there he got a change up toward the outside part of the plate and just punched it into right. He has impressed Bruce Bochi. Bochi has been very complimentary of Hagerty. And the pitch to Langford misses for ball one. infield at double play depth with Rogers, the second baseman, way over toward the middle. And that pitch is a strike over the outside corner against Valdez. There have been five stolen bases this year. Nobody’s been caught. Yanner Diaz has thrown out three out of 32. Valdez at the belt to the plate and it is low. And again, keep in mind he’s one of the premier ground ball pitchers. He has induced seven double plays this year right behind his teammate Hunter Brown who has produced eight. Two balls, one strike on Langford. Struck out his first time and he swings and he drills one into right. Hard line drive, base hit. Hagerty turns second, slams on the brakes, and goes back as Cam Smith came up throwing. And the Rangers are cooking here in the fourth. Their first two base runners of the game come on opposite field hits with nobody out. And it brings up Josh Young. So there was plenty of movement on that pitch. Armside run there for Valdez. But the pitch was in the strike zone and it was up. You leave that sinker up a little bit just like leaving a change up. It’s a hitable pitch. and Wyatt shot it out into range. So here’s Josh Young. He struck out his first time. Valdez delivers and that one is lined to left. That’s a base hit. Hagerty got a late start, but he’s being waved around third heading through the plate. There will be no play at home. He scores standing up and Josh Young has given the Rangers a one- nothing lead in the fourth. Well, Hagerty paused because he thought the third baseman Paradus might handle that on a line. It went to the left of Paradus, but Tony Beasley aggressively waving him around. And Desenzo did not appear to have a strong arm as he got that into the infield. So, Young has his 19th RBI. And we have our first run brought to you by K Cabota. So, that was a curveball that finished in the strike zone. that was up but finished in the lower third of the strike zone. A lot of these curves that Daldez has thrown have been pitches finishing below the strike zone. So once again a hitable pitch that was a little bit up. So it’s Langford at second now and Young at first with Garcia coming out. Enfield looking for two. The pitch to Adoleis and that’s a strike over the inside corner. Borderline call going the pitcher’s way. On the box we see it did appear to be a strike right on the inside edge. Owen won the count and the pitch to Idololis. That is inside and low. Let’s pause for station identification on the Rangers radio network. Your home of Texas Rangers baseball KRLDFM and HD1 Dallas Fort Worth. We one- nothing Rangers with runners at first and second and nobody out in the second half of the fourth inning. Garcia waiting for Valdez. And here it comes. Annie Dolles takes tight. That’s a sinker and the count is two and one. On deck is Marcus Simeon. With men in scoring position, the Rangers have struggled all year. the batting average at 217 in these situations as a team. Adoleis Garcia a 229 hitter. The 2-1 offering swing and a miss and the count is 2 and2. Marcus Simeon who waits on deck has been one of the best if not the best with men in scoring position hitting 294. The crowd getting an Elbombi chant going. Valdez deals 2-2 and Adulli strikes out swinging on a change up. That’s a big out. Second time that Garcia has struck out today. Five punch outs for Valdez. He’s working on the short end of a one- nothing score as Simeon makes his way to the plate. Marcus struck out on a change his first time. and he’s had good success against Valdez. A career average over 3 in 36 at bats coming in with a couple of home runs. The game brought to you by Balconus Distilling. It’s the original Texas whiskey. Valdez to the plate and Marcus shoots one foul off to the right and out of play. Nothing and won the count. Next weekend, the Rangers are in Chicago to face the White Socks. Then back home against Toronto a week from tomorrow on the 26th Memorial Day. That’s a 305 game. 0 and one. The runners go. The pitch is low and there’s no throw. That’s a double steel as Langford swipes third. His ninth stolen base of the year to lead the club. And Young followed along and grabbed second, his third stolen base. Langford got a great jump there on Valdez. And of course, Young has to pay attention to Langford. Wait for him to get started, but Wyatt was such a good jump there. And of course, the ball ended up getting away from Diaz. So now they bring the infield in. And here’s the pitch. And that’s way outside. The curveball didn’t have much break to it. It’s a twoin-one count here on Simeon with Jonah on deck. Rangers looking to add to a one- nothing lead. Valdez goes behind the mound, grabs the rosin bag, leaves it back there on the turf, gets ready two and one, and now comes home and Simeon takes it low. The curve ball hits three balls and one strike. So, a big moment here as the Rangers try to add on a great opportunity. The set by Valdez. A long hold and the pitch to Marcus. He lost him. He missed outside with a curve. He missed on three curve balls in that Simeon played appearance. First walk allowed by Valdez. And the bases are loaded for Jonah Heim. He flyed to center his first time up with the bases loaded this year. Jonah is one for one with a couple of RBI’s in his only plate appearance. We’re going to get a mound visit today. And right now it is Josh Miller, the pitching coach, heading out there to talk to his battery. in the shortstop. Dub Bond comes in and joins the conversation as well. Not much else going in the major leagues uh this early, but the Tigers have an early lead at Toronto, two to nothing in the top of the second. And Washington has a 6 nothing lead over the struggling Orioles in the top of the second in Baltimore. Yeah, our game started today before any of the early games on the East Coast. Yeah. Later on, the Angels will take on the Dodgers at Dodgers Stadium. The A’s play the Giants in San Francisco, and Seattle plays San Diego in San Diego on rivalry weekend. Langford at third, Young at second, Simeon at first with one out. High batting right-handed, and the pitch is inside and low for ball one. And Valdez badly in need of a double play here. Jonah has hit a couple of home runs off him in his career. Valdez going to the full windup now with the bases full. And here it comes. And Jonah swings and hits one in the air to deep right field. Deep enough to score a run but playable. Smith is back to make the catch. Jogging home is Langford. Over the third goes Young. It is two to nothing Rangers on Jonah Hines’s 15th RBI. So, some situational hitting by the Rangers there. And with two outs, it brings up Jake Burgerer. And something that has been better for Texas here in recent days yesterday. Josh Smith with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning that gave Texas a 4 to one lead. Rangers have done a better job of moving runners and in general being better in these situational hitting spots. We’ve got an insurance run brought to you by Globe Life. Make tomorrow better. For over 125 years, helping protect families when they need it most. Globe Life. So, first and third now in two outs. Simeon’s the runner at first and Young at third. Rangers might start Marcus Simeon at some point. Burgerer flyed to left his first time. Here’s the set in the pitch and that swung on and missed. And Simeon was going back toward first base. I’m not having Valdez move figured out as yet. Atlanta and Boston are underway and Atlanta’s leading two to nothing. That’s in the bottom of the second at Fenway Park. A quick look at the quick trip scoreboard. The pitch is down low. It is one ball and one strike on Jake Berger. Burgerer having a good home stand. He’s seven for 21 with a big home run in that one to nothing game for Jacob Deg Gro. One ball, one strike. Valdez ready and the pitch. Check swing on a breaking ball. He did not go around on that curve and the count is two and one. And Valdez pitch count now is up to 57. as this has been a long inning for him. 28 pitches for Valdez here in the fourth. Lighters at 37 for the game through four innings. The 2-1 offering. Burgerer swings and lines it up the middle. It’s a base hit off the top of the mound and through. And to score is Young. Around to third goes Simeon. It’s three nothing Texas on Ber’s 16th RBI of the year. So Burgerer gets ahead on the count. gets a sinker at two and one. And here in the fourth inning, Valdez has just not been as sharp with his location as he had been in the first three innings. If Burgerer doesn’t swing, this is strike two. It’s a pitch that’s near the bottom of the zone, right around the inside corner. And the Rangers have stopped trying to pull everything. The majority of the hits here going up the middle or the opposite way. And here comes Polar with Simeon at third and Burger at first. And the pitch is a strike to Polar. That’s a sinking fast ball at 92 for strike one. So Valdez was perfect for three innings, but the second time through the order, Rangers getting to him. Four for five and a sacrifice fly and a walk. The pitch swung on. That’s line to center field. On comes Meyers and he makes the catch as that ball stayed up for him. And that ends the inning. But eight Rangers bat and three Rangers score on four hits in a walk. Two men are left and after four complete, it’s the Rangers three and the Astros nothing on the Rangers Radio Network. [Music] Do I do? [Music] You [Music] are doo. by Nick Marley for arguing balls and strikes. Denzo struck out looking his first time up. Lighter over the top and to the plate and that is inside and high for ball one. Denzo now one for eight in the series. Yordon Alvarez remains on the injured list for Houston. Cory Seager out of action on that list for the Rangers. The 10 pitch swung on and missed. It is one and one. And of course, the Astros without big guns such as Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker. Last year they said goodbye to Guriel Korea. The pitch is in for a strike. Altuve the only one left from the uh trash can banging scandal among the Astros hitters. That doesn’t mean that Jared hates them any less, does it? I don’t think there’s anything that would uh ameliorate his hatred. No, I don’t think so. One, two, breaking ball. Did he go? He did not says the first base umpire Mark Ripper and the count at two balls and two strikes on Zack Denzo. This the first time that Lighter has ever faced the Astros. It’s only his 13th career big league start, his 16th big league appearance with a career record of three up and five down. Two balls, two strikes, the overthetop wind and the pitch and that misses for a ball. It is three and two. Lighter has not gone to the slide step yet to fool a hitter. Something that he’s done each of his last two starts a few times. Payoff pitch with the full wind up and he walked him. He missed high. So the second walk that Lighter has permitted. He’s generally been getting contact early in the count. He only has one strike out today. And here’s Jake Meyers who flyed out to center in his first plate [Music] appearance. Cam Smith, the rookie out on deck. The set, the pitch. There’s a swing and there’s a slow ground ball to short. Duran to Simeon for one onto first. They got them both. 643 on a ball that was not hit that hard. And the bases are wiped clean. and McDonald’s owners and operators of North Texas will team up with the Ranger Baseball Foundation. They’ll donate $1,000 to the Ronald McDonald Houses of Dallas and Fort Worth for that double play here at Globe Life Field. You know, and Meyers runs well and he actually got out of the box. Okay, so a real nice start by Durant and turned by Simeon. So, two outs and nobody on three nothing Rangers lead as Lighter tries to execute the shutdown inning. Cam Smith the batter the rookie grounded to third his first time up lighter over the top and to the plate and that is in there for a strike. Smith defensively has played exclusively in right field. This is his 33rd start in right came up as a third baseman. Came over from the Cubs in the Tucker trade delivery. That’s a breaking ball and that’s a strike. It is 0 and2. Smith had a big spring training to make the ball club. So lighter a strike away here now from a shutdown inning after the Rangers put three on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Here’s the O2 offering and that is fouled back by Smith. Brendan Rogers, the former Rocky, is on deck. Another big crowd here. We had the fifth sellout of the year last night and this appears to be very close to another one. 0 and two the count. Lighter ready to go. Peers over the net. Comes over the top and to the plate and it is outside. tried to get a chase on a slider, but that was too far outside and the count is a ball and two strikes on Cam Smith. He had a 15game on base streak earlier this year. Former 14th overall pick in the draft. Just last year, he played in just 32 minor league games, just five above double A. One-two pitch. He struck him out swinging with a slider. It is a shutdown inning for Jack Lighter and he has not allowed a hit through five innings [Music] [Music] after Heat. Heat. Hey, hey, hey. [Music] Hey, hey, hey. [Music] ers that you can buy with people like Chris Young and Ross Fster Maker, Evan Grant and Brad Sham, Dale Hansen at his house, and of course Matt and Jared and I, Dave Raymond, all of your favorites. you can go to lunch or dinner. So, take part in that auction. It’ll go live on Thursday and we’ll have all the details for you then. Here’s Duran and he takes a strike on the outside corner. He’s the only Ranger who didn’t bat in the fourth against Valdez when the Rangers scored the three runs. Duran grounded to first his first time up. Right-handed batter against the lefty and the pitch to Zeke is waved at and missed. That was a an awkward wave at a curve that was low and the count is nothing and two. Hagerty on deck and then Langford in the home half of the fifth inning. 0 and2 and the pitch is fouled at the plate. I get a reminder that uh with that piece of Zeke and he is hurting. Well, he is really in pain down on a knee. And Matt Lucero hustling out of the Ranger dugout to take a look at him. And I think he might have gotten hit in that most delicate area. We see it again. He fouled it straight down and then straight up into the groin. So on Memorial Day, the Rangers play at 3005 against the Blue Jays. Jacob Deg Grom probably going to be the Rangers starter if the Rangers stay in rotation between now and then. And then on Tuesday night, it’s Bruce Bochi World Series Parade Bobblehead Night presented by Medical City Healthcare. That’s the Rangers and the Blue Jays in the first 15,000 fans. Get that uh special collectors bobblehead. Get your tickets at rangers.com for that Toronto series. And then for the Cardinals on the weekend as the Rangers next home stand features the two birds, the Blue Jays and the Cardinals. And Zeke is still down flat on his belly as he tries to shake off the foul ball that hit him between the legs. And now he is up on his feet and literally jumping up and down to try and wake up. And that’s got to be a really frustrating situation for the trainer. There’s really not much he could do. Only thing that’s going to heal that is time. Yep. He doesn’t uh he doesn’t dress like Adrien Beltray for a game, does he? I don’t think so. I don’t know that anybody does who’s certainly playing in the infield, but based on his reaction, uh maybe maybe he is unprotected down there. [Music] But Zeke appears to have kept his lunch through all of that, which is always an issue. He’s back in there at 0 and2 and Valdez ready to face him. Three nothing Rangers leading to start the bottom of the fifth. And here’s the O2 offering. And that bounces in at the plate. One ball and two strikes. Curveball misfiring. And Valdez has uh been very erratic with the curveball command today. And that’s a big pitch for him. Throws it about a third of the time. Yeah, he wasn’t in the first three innings. One and two. And the pitch to Zeke. That’s a call. Strike three over the inside corner. And Zeke slowly heads for the Ranger dugout. Clearly still not feeling at the top of his game. That’s a half a dozen strikeouts for Valdez. And we swing to the top of the order for Hagerty who got the rally started last inning with a leadoff single to right and then scored the first run. Literally adding insult to injury there. [Music] Hagert’s one for two. Grounded out in the first inning. Valdez deals and that pitch is a strike over the inside edge. It’s 0 and one. The Rangers three runs on four hits. The Astros no runs on no hits. Jack Lighter at 49 pitches through five. The [Music] 0 and one. And here it comes. And that’s a little bit tight to Langford. One ball and one strike to Wyatt. Valdez working one and one. Lets it fly. There’s a swing and a foul. Grounder on the third base side. That ricochets out into fair territory. And we’ll wait for Desenzo to collect that one. Lob it underhand up into the stands. And it’s a one ball, two strike count. Valdez rubbing the shine off a new baseball. He features a brownfielders glove with bright yellow trim. and he works in long dark blue sleeves under the blue jersey. The pitch is inside to Langford on the count at two balls in two strikes. Valdez making his 145th career start. He has a lifetime RA of 332. Two balls, two strikes, and here comes the pitch. Langford chops it foul at the plate. Dribbles to the back stop. It’s Rangers Tuesday in New York. They get their first look at the Yankee right-hander Will Warren. That will be a 605 first pitch Texas time. 605 on Wednesday as well with Ryan Yarborough starting for the Yankees, a lefty. And then 11:35 first pitch on Thursday to face Carlos Riddan. Two and two. Valdez into that short rocking motion and the pitch to Langford and that is a call strike three on the inside corner. Borderline call goes the pitcher way and it’s a one two three inning for Valdez. [Music] [Music] Hey, hey, hey. Hey, hey, hey. Heat. Heat. Hey. down Broadway for strike one. That’s where we’re headed after the game today. Rogers now 0 for five in the series. 0 for eight over his last three games. The 01 pitch swinging the miss. He was fooled on that slider. It’s more the change of speed than anything that got him. And the count now at no balls and two strikes. Here comes the O2 pitch. Swing and a bouncer. Foul. That one over into the Houston dugout. And so the count will hold here. Nothing and two. Mauricio Duban on deck. And then Isak Paredus coming up after him. the two- strike pitch. Swinging him in. Struck him out. Fast ball at 98 toward the outside part of the plate. Third strikeout for Lighter. And again, the reason why he doesn’t have a lot of strikeouts, the Astros have been swinging early in the count and putting the ball in play. If my count is correct here, six Astros so far today have put the first pitch in play and those six wings have accounted for seven outs. Well, here’s another one. Bouncing ball to short. Durant has the shoulder eye hop, wings it across to Burger and Duban for a second time is out on the first pitch. So, two away here in the top of the six. lighter just rolls on. And that brings up Esso Paradus. For over 125 years, Globe Life has helped protect families when they need it most. Globe Life make tomorrow better. Well, Paradus has been the one Houston hitter who has been on lighter here. He lined out to deep left center in the first on the first pitch and then he lined out to Jake Burgerer at first, his last time up. takes this pitch low and outside for ball one. Paradus had hit third in the order in each of the first three games of the series. He’s two for 14 in the series. Takes this pitch here. A change up just a little outside and low. And Lighter falls behind in the count at two balls in no strikes. Three nothing Texas on top here as we play in the sixth. Lighter with a 200. And that’s at the top of the zone for a strike. A wellplaced slider. Not only is he commanding his pitches, but he is changing eye level for the Houston batters. You don’t often see the slider at that part of the zone, but he gets the called strike peering through the mitt. He’s ready. And here’s the 2-1. And that’s hit sharply. Foul near side. Camerawell over on the Houston side. Hope everyone’s okay. Well, everyone’s okay over there. And the count now two balls and two strikes. [Music] Two out, nobody on. Lighter with the 2-2. And that pitch is down and in. That change up. Had a little armside run in toward the right-handed batter. Full count here to Paradis for Lighter. This is the third time he’s gone to a full count. The two previous times he issued a walk. The 3-2 and that’s lifted high into the air center field. Hagerty has plenty of room. Back a few steps now in a few steps. He’s got it. 1 2 3 go. The Astros lighter working on a no hitter through six. We go to the bottom of the sixth. Rangers leaded three nothing on the Rangers radio network. [Music] It all it beat it away. [Music] [Music] Feel the feeling the way you feel. Feel it. The way you feel. The way you [Music] feel the way you feel. [Music] his first ever quality start as he gave up just a run in a 4 to1 victory over Colorado. Lighter gave up just two hits uh in that game while walking three. He has walked two so far today. But again, there’s a zero in the hit column as Josh Young stands in here. Josh with an RBI single, his first or his last time up rather, swings and sends one foul and into the seats down along the right field line for strike one. Young’s RBI single, breaking the deadlock and giving Texas a one to nothing lead. Josh one for two in the ball game, has also scored a run and he has stolen a base. The 01 hit high into the air center field. Meyers shading in that direction toward right center. Moves just a few feet to his left and he takes care of Young for the first down. And that will bring up Adolei Garcia who has struck out twice against Valdez. Family fun Tuesdays are back here at the ballpark in 2025. Next one coming up on Tuesday, May the 27th. Game two of the series with Toronto. First offering to Adoleis who’s at the bottom of the zone for strike one. Adoleis striking out looking in the second swinging in the fourth. And time requested here by Adoleis on Family Fun Tuesdays. You get to save 50% on select tickets for those Tuesday games when you use the offer code COE50. That’s COE50. Parking is just $15. Kids AED 13 and under can get player autographs. Go to rangers.com/familyf fun to find out more and to get your tickets. Swinging a miss by Adoleis here on a curveball and he’s behind in the count at nothing and two. Adoleis trying to snap what has now become an 0 for 10 skid. Valdez a long hold. the step back and the pitch and a swing and a miss that on another curve. And so Adulti’s out on strikes for a third time. That’s eight strikeouts now for Valdez. One shy of his season’s best. And that brings up Marcus Simeon. Simeon has struck out and walked. And the first offering to Marcus that change up a little bit low for ball one. Valdez his careerhigh in strikeouts in a game is 13. He’s done it twice. Last time he struck out 13 in a game back in the 2023 season. His pitch in the bottom third of the zone for a strike. at one and one the count here to Marcus Sime and he bats with two out and nobody on. When you take a look at the Rangers side of the score book everything in the fourth inning. Here’s a sharply hit ground ball foul of third. So make it a ball and two strikes. Outside of that Valdez has been perfect. The one two three first, second and third, fifth. And if he gets Simeon here the sixth. Rangers got three runs on four hits and left two, sending eight to the plate in the fourth. The one-two hit high into the air center field. Meyers to his left. Still on the move. He now stops and makes the grab. And there you go. Rangers have gone in order five times, but after six lead the Astros 3 nothing on the Heat. Heat. Hey, hey, hey. Heat. Heat. [Music] fly to right. Lighter ascending the back slope, plants that right foot on the third base side of the rubber as Altuve is ready to go. Altuve right in the middle of the box. And here comes Lighters pitch. a swing and a pop-up foul going back into the seats on the right side for strike one. Well, a little note from Steve Sparks, one of the broadcasters for the Houston Astros. Houston with no runs here today through six innings. It’s the 17th time this year that the Astros have played a game where they haven’t scored a run in the first five innings. Here’s a sharp ground ball to third to the left of Young. ease up with it, fires it across and in time to retire Alt Touve. So, not a first pitch out, but a second pitch out as the Astros are swinging early in the count, making contact and making outs. Lighter with just three strikeouts now through six and a third. The pitch to Walker and that’s just a little bit high for ball one. Walker drew a walk in the first inning. Grounded out to short in the fourth. The Astros through six have left just one man on base. Here’s the 10. And that one hit high into the air, but again foul and out of play right side. So one ball, one strike to count. And so right now, every out that Lighter records is a new career best in terms of innings pitched. Again, in his most recent start earlier this home stand against Colorado, he went exactly six innings at the time a new career best. The 1-1 hit sharply up the middle, but Simeon is there behind second. He picks it up, fires to Burger. We’ve got two men out here in the seventh inning. Jack made an attempt to field that ball. unaware perhaps that Simeon was right behind him and would have an easy play on it. Was hit pretty hard at 104 m an hour, but the Rangers really have not required a single above average defensive play behind Lighter so far. You know, they turned a nice double play, but they haven’t really turned any hits into outs. Here’s a swing and a foul off the bat of Yiner Diaz. Diaz is hit into a force play and flight out the shallow right field. The lighter tugging on the camp ready to go with the 01. The right-hander kicks and fires. And this pitch is inside. He missed there with a front door slider. And the count at one ball and one strike. Lighter very methodical in his approach. Overhead with the wind he goes and the 1-1. A swing and a miss. Wow. Diaz there chased a slider that was well off the plate outside. And lighter ahead of the count at one and two. Two out, nobody on. Rangers in the infield playing the right-handed hitter to pull the outfield shaded the other way. Lighter home with the one-two and that pitch outside. He figured, well, if he swung at the previous one, let me throw another one there. See if he’ll go after that. He doesn’t. And the counted. Two balls in two strikes. Diaz. Tugs on the batting helmet then looks out the lighter. Jack ready with the 22. And here it comes. Swinging a foul. Challenged it with a fast ball toward the outside part of the plate. And so we stay at two and two. Hey, be sure to text Rangers to 76432 for Rangers news updates and exclusive ticket offers. Again, that’s Rangers. Text it to 76432. Another two- two pitch on the way here from Lighter. The right-hander kicks and throws. And that one’s hit high into the air down the right field line, but going foul and into the seats. And so a rare lengthy at bat against Lighter here today. So far, six pitches without a result. The longest played appearance for any Houston player today with seven pitches when Jake Meyers lined out the right center back in the second. The 2-2 bounces in. Lighter spiking that curveball a couple of feet out in front of the plate. So it’s a full count now to Diaz with Zack Denzo waiting on deck. Lighter walking off the back slope looking out into center field turns as he gets to the turf rubbing the baseball down. He then fires it into his glove before getting that right foot planted on the third base side of the rubber. Ready with the 3-2. And here it is. swing and a highf fly ball deep out into right center field. Hagerty going back. He’s looking up and it’s gone. Yiner Diaz spoils the no hitter and the shut out with one swing of the stick and opposite field home run to put Houston on the board here at 3 to one. And I’m not sure that pitch was a strike. That was a high slider that I think was above the zone, maybe even outside. And Diaz able to go and get it. Pitch definitely up and out. Boy, that was almost letter high. And Diaz just going with the pitch for his fifth home run, his 22nd run batted in. And so Lighter had the no hitter going through six and two/3. Of course, he’s no stranger to no hitters. Tossing them at the Vanderbilt when he was in college, but to do it here so early in his big league career, it certainly would have been something special. So, Diaz with the home run, it’s now a 3 to one Ranger lead. And here’s Zack Denzo. Pitching coach Mike Maddox gone out for a brief chat there with Lighter. Denzo walked his last time up. He’s 0 for one. And the pitch is a fast ball near the top of the zone for strike one. Lighter has been convicted in his pitches here today. Very confident. The 01 and that pitch outside and low. So make it one ball and one strike to Denzo. Lighter taking time getting repositioned on the hill. Here comes the 1-1 swinging a foul. That one coming straight back and the counter to Senzo with a ball and two strikes. And this has been the most pitches that Lighter has thrown in any inning. He’s up to 16. His previous high was 14 pitches back in the second. Here comes the one-two swing and a foul tip caught by Jonah. Denzo is out on strikes. Fourth strikeout for Lighter. And the Rangers will take a lead into the bottom of the seventh. But the no hit bid is gone on the Diaz home run. Seventh inning stretch time. Let’s join Globe Life Field public address announcer Chuck Morgan. Gentlemen, will you please rise and direct your attention down [Music] the Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Now with a three to one lead will send him Ber and Polar to the plate against Crober Valdez. Again, it’s been a really odd start for Valdez. Five perfect innings, but a fourth inning in which he gave up three runs on four hits. Jonah, who had a sack fly in that three-run fourth, we’ll leave things off here. Jonah officially 0 for one but has hit the ball deep twice off of Valdez. And Jonah with a bit of a history of success against Valdez now five for 22 lifetime against him but with a couple of walks and a couple of home runs. First offering to Jonah, a high strike. Now Valdez, the left-hander with the 01. And that change up is down. So make it one ball and one strike. Valdez with that rough fourth inning has not been as efficient as Jack Lighter here today, but still with gas left in the tank here, he’s thrown a total of 84 pitches to this point. The 1-1 chopped off the plate. Foul rolling in front of the Houston dugout. She’ll make it a ball and two strikes here to Jonah. Three runs on four hits for the Rangers. A run on one hit. The Yiner Diaz home run for Houston. There is no activity behind Valdez out in the Astros bullpen as the one-two is lined into center. A base hit for Jonah Hine. Just an easy swing on a one-two curve ball. So Jonah on board. We’ve talked about this before, but Jonah one of the better Rangers with two strikes in the count. And that brings up Jake Burgerer. Burger today one for two single to drive in one of those three runs in the fourth. And he flyed out to deep left in the third. So Jake has gotten some good swings off here against Valdez. Now there’s some moving around out in the Astros bullpens and nobody warming up yet. There goes the runner. The pitch taken to throw to second. Not in time. And Jonah’s in there with the steel, his third of the season. Well, we had he had two the first week of the season. We were thinking, wow, he’s going to steal 20 bases. hadn’t attempted one since, but and Valdez paid no attention to him. He just took what was offered. Rangers had a double steel in that fourth inning. And so, three steals on the day. The pitch was a strike to Burger. Nothing in one. The 01 is popped up high into the air. Very shallow right field. Rogers going out. The second baseman will make a two-hand grab to get Burgerer for the first out. And now here’s Kevin Polar. Polar 0 for two. Let’s check in with Jared, guys. Quick trip scoreboard. The Nationals leading the Orioles 8 nothing. And it’s rough for the Orioles. They designated Kyle Gibson for Simon earlier. Zack Epin, who’s supposed to be their reliable starter in what’s been a rough rotation, has allowed eight runs on nine hits over five innings. Mike Soka on the other end with four scoreless. That game’s in the bottom of the fifth in Baltimore. Thank you. Kevin Polar stands in and takes this pitch down for ball one. Polar has bounced to short. He is also lined out to center. Right-hander Caleb Ort now warming up for Houston. Here’s the 10 and that’s fouled off. So, a ball and a strike. Polar missed 13 games while he was on the injured list with that lower back inflammation. Polar being activated today. Evan Carter going onto the IIL with the the quad strain in his right leg. The 1-1 pitch hit on the ground to short. Dubon up with it. He’ll throw to third. He tries to slide around the tag but is tagged out by Paradis for the second out. So Jonah tried to make it to third even though the ball was hit in front of him. Polar reaches first on the fieldielder’s choice. Two men are out for Ezekiel [Music] Duran. Usually, you don’t want to run when the ground ball is hit in front of you and you’re the runner at second base. So, is out there 65. And here’s Zeke 0 for two. struck out his last time up in what was a painful at bat literally and he takes this offering from Valdez down and in for ball one. Steel walk behind zero turn and stand on mowers are built to get the job done. Shop online or at your local steel dealer. Steel let’s go mow. This pitch is cracked back up the middle. Valdez ducked out of the way and it finds its way out into center. Polar around second, easily makes it to third. Zeke bounces one hard up the middle. Rangers with a couple of hits and now a couple of men on here at the corners as we get to the top of the order. And Sam Hagerty, I tell you what, Valdez just did duck under that. It went right over his back as he turned his back to Durant in his follow through and he just ducked enough so that the ball went right over his head and beyond him past second and into center. You’ve got all kinds of possibilities here with Polar at third and Durant at first. You have the possibility of the double steel with Sam Hagerty at the plate and Valdez, a guy who uh occasionally does not field his position. Well, you’ve got the possibility of Hagerty trying to bunt for a hit here. Hagerty has had three very good at bats here today. He’s officially one for three. He singled and scored in the fourth last time up. Lined out to the warning track in right as Smith had to go back and make a catch right in front of a wall. So, first and third, two men out. Rangers looking to add to this 3-1 advantage. And Valdez throws a change up on the outside corner for strike one. Hagerty, the switch hitter, swinging from the right side. He’s now four for 12 from this side of the plate. The 01. It’s over the plate, but low. Missed there with a chain. Should make it one ball and one strike. Coming into play today, the change up a pitch that Valdez had thrown just a little more than 15% of the time this year. Polar off of third. Duran away from first. The 1-1. Durant takes off and the ball is beaten. Foul as it goes behind first base coach Cory Ragsdale and the counter ball in two strikes. Zeke got a pretty good jump that time on Valdez. Valdez will take a long walk off the hill towards second base. Now fires the ball back into the glove. Touches up to the Rosin bag as he looks out to center field. And uh he’s having a chat here with the second base umpire Edwin Jimenez. now wants and gets a new baseball will go back to the Rosen bag and now finally get on top. First and third for Texas here in the seventh. Rangers ahead by two. Hagerty waiting on the one-two pit. There goes Zeke again. The pitch gets bounced fouled over by the Houston dugout. So Zeke has made a couple of strong dashes here for second and we’ll have to retreat. That is a slow jog back to first base. Zeke just now returning to the bag. Valdez back on top. One ball, two strikes to count. And the pitch. Zeke’s running again and the ball is hit on the ground left side. Parades to his left is up with it. The sidearm throw gets Hagerty for the final out in the inning. So the Rangers threaten but can’t score. They get a couple of hits and lead two will go to the eight. 3-1 Texas on the Rangers radio network. Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Heat. Hey, heat. Hey, heat. [Music] Heat. Heat. Luke Jackson is not only available able today, but Bruce Bochi said he will definitely get him into the game. Here’s the 10 delivery. Swung on grounded foul pass third. Jackson hasn’t pitched since Monday when he was hit in the right wrist by the line drive at 111 mph off the bat of Brian McMahon. One and one on Meyers with Smith on deck and then Rogers number six, seven, and eight for Houston. and Lighter with a change up misses and the count at two balls and a strike. Lighter’s been very uh slider reliant today. Well over 40% of his pitches have been sliders. A 1-1 offering and that’s popped in the air short center and that falls for a base hit. It’s a humpback liner off the bat of Meyers. It’s the second hit for the Houston. They’re trailing three to one and Cam Smith is coming up. Smith has grounded out and struck out. Ladder’s pitch count still low at 81 pitches. Now he is pitching with regular 4 days rest after throwing 89 pitches in six innings and beating the Rockies on Tuesday. Smith 0 for two. And uh we have time called and Mike Maddox will go out to the mound talk to lighter and stall a little bit I guess. So Chris Martin can have some more time out in the bullpen. And while that occurs, let’s check back in with Jared Sander. Guys, time now for Aces Update brought to you by Chalkaw Casinos and Resorts where the players play. And how about a major league debut from Mick Ael, one of the top prospects for the Phillies exits in the sixth inning of their ball game with nine strikeouts. That ties the record for most strikeouts by a Philly starter in their debut in the modern era. He ties Curt Simmons who struck out nine in his major league debut back in 1947. The Phillies are leading the Pirates in a low-scoring game one- nothing through six innings. All right, Jared. Thanks. Well, Smith steps in. Lighter ready. Nobody out. A runner at first. Tying run at the plate. The pitch is inside for ball one. Smith 14th pick in the draft last year. Lighter, the second pick in the draft in 2021. The first pick that year was the catcher Henry Davis out of Louisville by the Pirates. The 10 pitch and that missed. It is 2 and 0. Borderline pitch that time. And the slider call went the hitter’s way. The guy picked right after Lighter is in the big leagues now, too. And that is Jackson Job who was drafted by the Tigers out of Heritage High School in Oklahoma. 200 pitch. That’s a strike. Two and one. His lighter went to a side step. And it’s two balls and a strike on Smith with Brendan Rogers on deck and then Dubon to follow. Victor Keratini on the bench today. He’s a switch hitter. Cesar Salazar a left-handed batter and two righties, Jeremy Pñena and Chaz McCormick. Two-1 pitch, breaking ball strike. Slider caught the bottom of the zone. Two and two. The one run for the Astros today came on a slider that was not very good. That hung up above the top of the zone and Diaz drove it out into the Ranger bullpen in right center. That came with two outs in the seventh and broke up a lighter no hitter. He had walked two at that point. Two balls, two strikes. The pitch just outside. Another borderline pitch going the hitter’s way. There have been two in this count that could conceivably have been called strikes that were not. So, the count has gone full. Remember, Nick Marley threw out Joe Espada early in the game for arguing balls and strikes from the Astros dugout. Full count, payoff pitch. swung on and popped a short right center. This is trouble. This falls for a hit. Another bleeder. Little Texas League floater out to right center. And the Astros trailing three to one. Have two soft hits here to start the eighth. And Brendan Rogers coming up. First and second and two away for Rogers who has flat out to left and struck out. And that is going to be it for Jack Lighter. Uh Bruce Bochi does not want to put him in a position where he could conceivably take the loss in this game. Lighter is going to get a big round of applause from a huge crowd. 34,433 here today as Lighter goes a career-high seven innings plus. And it will be his second quality start in a row. And listen to the hand for Jack. Chris Martin will be the new Ranger pitcher as the bullpin door swings open and the 6’8 in righty heads for the mound with a pitching change and the Rangers leading three to one. Let’s pause for this on the Rangers Radio Network. I’m Marcus Simeon and I know it’s cliche, but I’m a Californian who moved to Texas. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it [Music] means? Responsive. Chris Martin worked a scoreless inning last night. made his first appearance since Tuesday when he had some elbow discomfort. He lowered his RA to 183 throwing just seven pitches in that outing. And he is going to face a pinch hitter here, Jeremy Pena, with runners at first and second and nobody out. Pena hitting .301 with six homers and 23 runs batted in. We are in the top of the eighth. The Rangers have the corners up against a possible bunt as there’s nobody out. Myers at second and Smith at first. Martin the high hold and the pitch high and inside the Pina for ball one. Now Chris is yelling after this pitch and he yelled after his final warm-up pitch. Yeah, probably that elbow acting up again. You don’t like to guess on things like that. But now Chris is walking around behind the mound. He’s got his glove in his pitching hand, his left hand up in front of his face right now. And uh this is uh not good news. Um Mike Maddox out there, Bruce Bochi out there, Sean Fields, Ranger trainer out there. And that’s going to be it for Chris Martin for the day. And for the third time on this home stand, the Rangers have had a reliever leave for a physical problem. And a new pitcher will come in and work on the game mound as he gets ready and have all the time he needs to get ready. Robert Garcia had gotten up in the bullpen, but had not started throwing yet. And it looks like it will be Garcia summoned here in a key situation with runners at first and second and nobody out. A one count on PIA and the Astros with the tying runs aboard and the go-ahead run coming to the plate. So Garcia getting fitted out right now with the pitchcom device and then heading through the bullpin door. So we have a pitching change and let’s pause for these messages. Rangers lead three to one in the eighth on the Rangers radio. Let’s see if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it [Music] means? Oppo taco. A home run hit to the opposite field. Austin Hayes with an oppo taco. His 13th and it’s a one-run game. Expand your vocabulary by listening to every game on the MLB app and MLB.com. MLB Network Strike Zone Wednesday and Friday nights all season. Take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. Southpaw Robert Garcia out of Mantika, California comes on for the 24th time. That ties Louis Varand of Minnesota for the most appearances by an American League pitcher. Garcia has been outstanding with a 140 erra, one save and a one and one record. He worked a scoreless inning last night. He pitched the ninth through only 14 pitches. He’s worked 19 innings this year, has not allowed a home run. He’s walked five, struck out 17, and the league is hitting 182 against him. Garcia features a mid90s fast ball and a very good change up. And he comes on here in uh a heck of a spot. Runners at first and second, nobody out. A one ball count on Jeremy Pñena, which means that regardless of what happens in this plate appearance, it will go on the record of Garcia as Chris Martin throws one pitch today and then leaves. And Martin will uh have his book closed, showing an appearance, but no innings pitched and no batters faced as Garcia continues to warm on the game mound as the departure of Martin was due to an injury. Tigers and uh Toronto Blue Jays still tied 2-2. They’re in the bottom of the sixth inning at Rogers Center in Toronto. Atlanta over Boston 7 to4 in the top of the sixth inning in Boston. Cincinnati leads Cleveland two to nothing in the bottom of the fifth inning in Cincinnati. And the Cardinals are ahead of Kansas City 1 to nothing in the bottom of the fourth inning in Kansas City. In that American League Central race, the Tigers have a 4-ame lead over Minnesota, 4 1/2 over Cleveland, and 5 1/2 over Kansas City. The Yankees have a 4-ame lead over Boston and Toronto and a five-game lead over Tampa Bay in the East. So, the closest division in the American League by far, the American League West with Seattle leading the Rangers by a game and a half, Houston by two and a half, the A’s by four, and the last place Angels by six. Over in the National League, the East is tight with the Mets leading the Phillies by a game and a half, and then Atlanta six games back. The Central is a scramble with the Cubs leading the Cardinals by one game and the Reds by four and a half. And then of course in the West you have four teams separated by just five games. The Dodgers who have a one-ame lead over San Diego have a twoame lead over San Francisco and a fivegame lead over Arizona. Well, Garcia continues to take his warm-up tosses. Again, he has the luxury of taking as many as he’d like. And uh it seems that he’s already taken more warm-up pitches than he would normally take out in the bullpin. But until he feels comfortable, there’s uh no reason for him to say he’s ready to go. Even though uh 34,433 paid customers and the players on both teams are watching him do his work out on the hill. And maybe the longer he takes, the longer he freezes the opposing hitters. But it appears he’s ready to go now. He takes a walk behind the mound and advancing to the plate is Jeremy Pñena who has a one ball count as Chris Martin missed high on his first pitch. Uh let out a yell and then departed for the Ranger clubhouse. So for Garcia, he’s been kind of neutral in terms of ground balls and fly balls this year. In the past, he’s been more of a ground ball pitcher. He does have two ground ball double plays to his credit this year. Thinking about this situation with runners at first and second and Jeremy Pena batting infield will be at double play depth at second and short. And the corners with Pñena batting now are no longer playing in for a bunt. Burger’s way off the line at first. He’s about 35 almost 40t off the line. One and0 on Pñena Garcia ready. Here’s the pitch. Swung on and popped up. Right side of the infield. Marcus Simeon under it. The infield fly rule is called. Simeon makes a one-handed catch. And on one pitch, Garcia gets the first out of the inning as Pena has popped out. And that will bring up Mauricio Dubon. Dubon playing the shortstop today at least to start the game. He will probably change positions now that Pena is in the ball game. Pena will likely go to shortstop. Dubon has flat out to left and grounded out to short. The Rangers have turned one double play today behind Jack Lighter. Lighter going seven innings plus allowing one run at the moment, but the runners are his property at first and second. There’s a swing and there’s a slow chopper. Garcia’s got it. Third base side of the mound and guns to first for the out. The runners move up to second and third. So, the tying runs are in scoring position, but there are now two outs and it is up to Isach Paredus. Paredus playing third base today. And for the first time this year, he’s leading off with the Astros. The Astros had used only Jose Altuve and Jeremy Pena as leadoff batters before this afternoon. And Paradus has flyed out to left, lined out to first, and fly out to center field today. The Rangers leading 3 to one. In the top half of the eighth inning, Mauricio Duban, three plate appearances today. He has seen three pitches. Put it in play each time on the first pitch. Yeah, I’m beginning to wonder now if it was a Houston plan to attack early in the count against Lighter or if it’s an overall Ranger plan today. just throw them strikes, make them put the ball in play, see what happens. Well, this is the first inning that the Astros have had runners in scoring position, so they’re now 0 for two in those situations. The Rangers are two for seven in a sacrifice fly. So, Paris, the hitter, he has 21 RBI’s this year. Here’s the set by Garcia and the pitch. And that’s a little high for a ball. Slider didn’t slide. And it’s ball one. Garcia trying to put out a fire here. Jose Altuve is the on deck batter. Meyers at third and Smith at second. Garcia at the belt and to the plate. And that’s a strike down at the bottom of the zone with a slider with count evens at a ball and a strike on Paradus. He’s now two for 15 in the series. He does have a couple of runs batted in. One ball, one strike, and time called at the plate. All three Ranger runs came in the fourth inning. An RBI single by Josh Young, a sacrifice fly by Jonah, an RBI single by Jake Burgerer, and then the Astros with the home run by Yanner Diaz in the seventh. Three to one Texas in the eighth. Two outs, runners at second and third. One and one the count to Paradis. Here it comes. Swung on and a high drive. Well hit to left. Langford racing back to the corner. He’s at the wall. He leaps and it’s gone. A three-run homer and the Astros take the lead. Isatak Paredus has turned the game around and it’s 4-3 [Applause] Houston. And that brings the Astro fans out of their seats. They have been very quiet to this point. I’ll tell you what, Wyatt got up over the wall. I thought he had that. He just missed hauling that one back in. Paradus getting a hold of a 1-1 change up that was middle away and about knee high. So, Paradus able to extend there. Did good wood on that and just get it over Langford’s outstretched glove. So, Garcia gets a blown save. Lighter gets a no decision today and the Rangers will have to come from behind. Brian Abrau is warming in the bullpin to come on in the eighth for Houston as Eluve takes strike one. He’s grounded out twice in flight out. Altuve one for 14 in this series. Four runs, four hits for Houston, three runs, six hits for Texas. And here’s the pitch. And that one missed. One ball and one strike. The Rangers in the eighth are due to send up Langford Young and Garcia. One ball, one strike, and the pitch outside. It is two- one. That’s the first home run given up by Robert Garcia this year. And it could not have come at a worse time. Paradus with his seventh homer. His RBI total up to 24 and that now leads their club. The 2-1 pitch outside. It is 3 and one. So, uh, manager Joe Espada putting Paradis in the leadoff spot there. Had a huge impact in the game. Three and one. The pitch to Altuve. That slants in for a strike, a slider. And the count is three and two. Christian Walker would be next. 4-3 Astros in the eighth inning. Garcia deals and he missed outside. Artu takes the free ticket. That will bring up Walker. Walker has drawn a base on balls and twice he has grounded out. Mike Maddox, the Ranger pitching coach, heading for the mound for a conversation with Robert Garcia.
