🚨ESPN: Chicago Bulls Draft Derik Queen In Last 2025 NBA Mock Draft

[Music] What’s going on, Bulls fans? Welcome into the Bulls Report. I’m your host, Patrick Seman, and coming up on today’s show, we’re going to be diving into ESPN’s latest mock draft for the 2025 NBA draft where they had the Bulls landing an absolute steal at pick number 12. All right, so in ESPN’s latest NBA mock draft, they had the Bulls drafting Maryland center Derek Queen. Now, a lot of us originally thought there was no chance Derek Queen falls outside the top 10. There’s no chance the Bulls are even in a position to draft him at pick number 12. But after the scouting combine, he’s kind of falling down draft boards just a little bit. And the biggest reason for that is because of his vertical leap being a whopping 28 in. Now, this is his max ver as well, the lowest at the entire combine. Um, but he did uh measure in at 6’9 and a quarter inch. Also 247 pounds. Had a standing reach of around nine feet and then also wingspan uh of 7 ft, which is good news there. But the athleticism was definitely in question for Queen and the combine results didn’t favor him in any sort of way. But ESPN was just writing up their article explaining why um the Bulls decided to go Queen in their mock draft saying this. The Bulls reacquired this once top 10 protected pick at the deadline in the Zack Lavine trade, guaranteeing they would have or they would add a prospect as they navigate out of the middle of the Eastern Conference standings. Chicago is in position to draft the best available talent. but in this greater need of front court help which will make Queen an interesting option if he slips to number 12. Queen had an excellent season at Maryland and is in the mix for teams as high as the mid lottery but he looks to have a bit of a wider range. He came in at a legitimate 6’10 in shoes, but fared poorly in athletic testing at the combine and didn’t shoot convincingly in drills. Though unsurprisingly or unsurprising, those are two key areas for his long-term development that teams will question as he hits the workout circuit. He’s a major offensive talent whose skill set separates him from the other bigs in this class. Ultimately, his film should speak louder than the combine data and whichever team selects him will believe it can get the most out of him. His uh proponents around the league see an intelligent player whose potential is high and you know kind of I I do disagree on ESPN just a little bit talking about his ceiling. I don’t know if he has an incredibly incredibly high ceiling where you know he’s on the level of like an Alpurn Sangoon or obviously a Jokic who he who he has been compared to countless times or even like a guy like Demarcus Cousins. But I will say just because of how high his skill set is, I think that increases his floor a whole lot. Where the Bulls do take him at pick number 12, I would expect him to be a day one impact for this team. Like he already has an NBA skill set. Now, yes, maybe he could be like inefficient during his first couple years like we saw Modis Buzzelis be when he finally got some rotation minutes this past season where yeah, was he the most efficient player? No, probably not. But I also think Derrick Quinn could follow that same, you know, kind of trajectory where it’s like, yeah, inefficient for the first couple years, finally hits his stride, and then we’re looking at him as a true starting center in the NBA. And this past year at Maryland, he was good. Um he obviously had that gamewinner in March Madness off that left foot um fading away. It was an absolutely nasty move um against Colorado State, but he averaged 16 and a half points per game, nine boards, 1.9 assists. Now I do think that assists per game number will go up a ton at the NBA level. There’s just more spacing, a lot more just constant movement. So I think that would be a huge increase in his game. But he also averaged a block per game, which has been, you know, a negative on him, but also shot for 52.6% from the field. So, I’ll ask you guys this. Would you draft Eric Queen at pick number 12? Give me a D for draft or a P for pass. I’m doing in a heartbeat. I think this is a honestly a dream for the Chicago Bulls if they could somehow land Queen at pick number 12. But you guys make the call for me. Give me a D for draft or give me a P for pass if you would draft Derrick Queen at pick number 12. Now, I do want to talk about the possibility of Derrick Queen just falling in the NBA draft. says, you know, a lot of us did think he was a lock in top eight pick. But after the combine and after a lot of these reports are coming out, maybe he will be a, you know, will be available at pick number 12. There’s always a couple of prospects that we all think are going to go a lot higher than they actually do, and maybe Derrick Queen or a lot lower than they actually do. Maybe Derrick Queen could be that guy this year. So, this is actually coming in from Jamie Shaw of On Three talking about Derrick Queen and his performance at the combine in Chicago saying this. However, the draft comb uh combine confirmed the eye test about Queen’s athleticism. Well, it was already known that Queen was a less than average athlete. His testing numbers finished even worse than expected. Queen finished with a reported 12.45 lane agility drill, giving him the third lowest score in the previous five years of the NBA draft combine. his 28 inch reported maximum uh maximum vertical would have finished tied with Payton Sanford as the second lowest total last year. So obviously some concerns over the vertical jump over um him on that uh agility test, but I’m not going to freak out over these numbers. Now if Queen was a guy where maybe his skill set wasn’t as high as it is, then yes, this would be a massive concern. But he was the same athlete that dominated college basketball as an 18-year-old last year. He’s the same guy that carried Maryland throughout the NCAA tournament to a sweet 16. Like I think he is just that talented offensively that really these athletic, you know, testing numbers, I’m not going to, you know, totally freak out for him or over him. And, you know, that’s a good transition to talking about what I see when I’m watching Derek Wayne. So, here are five takeaways I have. Number one is just his physical offensive game. Now, yes, he is a very skilled player. He loves to play at the top of the key, kind of be that distributor, but when he does have a smaller defender on the low block, he is going to be physical with him. He’s going to bury them under the rim. Very similar to like Sangon and Joic do when they have a smaller player on them, they’ll just back him in, give them one move, and the ball’s going up. So, I love that part of his game. Very physical. And also, when he’s driving, he’s a big shoulder bump guy just to create that little bit of space. And then he does have this elite touch around the rim where he can finish over the top even if he doesn’t create that separation with his physicality. So I love that there. And then even though he only averaged 1.9 assists per game, I think he’s going to be an elite playmaker. I think when you see him at the top of the key, you know, in these dribble handoff situations where yes, if he is giving the ball off to a guard, he can set that screen roll and then he can play a little fouronree uh on the way down from the free throw line and below. I love that part of his game. but also him just working out of the low block like if he is eating on you know whatever center or big that’s on him like and teams have to double he’s a great passer out of the little block. So I love both those parts of his game and that’s why the 1.9 assists per night. I think that’s going to go up to probably three, four or five once he hits NBA level and he gets very familiar with that game and you know I already kind of touched about the great touch here. Um, but he really does. He also has a nice little float shot to him, too. Where if he is attacking that fouron three down where I just say the opposing team’s defense, they’re blitzing the ball screen. He’s attacking. I just say all of his kind of outlet passes are taken away, he can just get to that touch shot right above the rim. Hits it at a high qu. But then also with that jump hook, great at that. So, I love his touch around the rim and the touch mixed up with the physicality. you know, even though he is not the athlete that you would want him to be, still speaks to how dominant he can be um in the NBA game. And you know, some limitations he has definitely as a rim protector. Like he’s not going to be a guy like a Clint Capella or like a Miles Turner protecting the rim like a Mitchell Robinson, one of these true rim protectors. But I do think he could be a little better than people are making him out to be where people are just saying he can’t protect the rim rim at all compared to like Nico Vuvich for example. I think he’ll be better, you know, than Vu is at protecting the rim. But he is definitely an offensiveminded center. So there are question marks that the Bulls they want to go an offensive minded center or go a defensive minded center. I bet you if the Bulls had to pick between Queen and Malwatch, I would probably go Malwatch. But still, if Queen is there at 12, I still think you have to take him. Now, one thing I’ve also noticed, he struggles versus fast guards, mainly in pick and roll situations where they’ll get them on him and he can just blow by him. So, he does struggle a little bit in that aspect. But still, with how good he is offensively, these two limitations defensively are not going to hold me up from, you know, taking him at pick number 12 because the Bulls also need a guy out of that high post area just to orchestrate some sort of an offense. Well, let’s say Josh Giddy’s off the court or whatever it may be. So, I’ll ask you guys this. What would you do? Who do you want the Bulls to draft at pick number 12? Stuck in that NBA purgatory. Once again, should have said this uh on the top of today’s show. A lot of people were complaining about the trade package that the Bulls got for Zack Lavine. Imagine how upset we would be right now if that pick was heading to San Antonio because that was top 10 protected if that was obviously which it ended up being outside the top 10 that goes to the Spurs and the Bulls don’t have a first round pick. We would be all furious with this front office if that was the case. So, one little plus to AKME. Um, at least doing, you know, one good move for the Bulls off seasonason this past uh this past year.
