Erik Spoelstra on BENCHING Andrew Wiggins for Nikola Jovic in Heat’s Game 2 LOSS at Cavaliers

what you could have done from that point to get ahead. Um, you know, it doesn’t ever matter how you get there. Um, of course, you know, there’s things that we’re going to look at and and try to get better so we’re not down, you know, 17 and um, you know, but at the end of the day, it’s a two-point game, you know, and and we had our opportunities uh there. Um, you know, we struggled to contain U. Mitchell obviously, you know, down the stretch. He made some uh tough shots. He he did what he typically does. We uh threw uh you know, two or three things uh at him and he still was able to to negotiate and manage and and and find some airspace. Um you know, so we’ll just we’ll get to work. We have a couple days um and uh you know, we just got to figure it out. couple couple of you know games where where we’re right there. Um you know and and now we just have to figure out how to get it over the top. It’s going to take more. It’s going to take uh collectively us uh um you know digging deeper and um we have respect for for uh you know who they are, what they can do. Um but we have to be better. How about the fourth quarter? Um, well, we had more consecutive stops, you know. Um, and we just kept on digging. That for us that creates momentum. I know everybody says that, but for us it definitely does. And, uh, and then we were able to to generate some some good things, you know, going down the other end. Uh, you know, Tyler was really good. But I thought Bam’s competitive spirit all night long was uh exactly what we need from him. Um and Nico gave us a real good boost. Um offensively, we just look different when he’s on on the floor. Um he he creates some stress with his his skill and um you know, I’m pleased that he was able to play those 24 minutes. It’s a credit to uh him putting in all that time conditioning, you know, the last month or so. Thoughts on the lineup change? I mean, obviously it seemed apparent, but going with DaVon and shaking things up when he been so good as a sixman, what was your thought? Yeah, just to uh there’s, you know, a couple different factors with that, but uh wanted to um you know, be able to organize ourselves offensively uh at the start a little bit better, get Tyler off the ball, wigs off the ball. Um and then obviously, you know, some defensive presence. Um his competitive uh spirit on the ball was was very good all night. uh and you’re dealing with, you know, two guards that can um put a lot of pressure on you. There seems to be an emphasis from the start to put up generating more threes. Uh yes, you know, some of the spacing um that led to turnovers. We have to clean that up. Um uh and look, each game is different. This is what this game uh presented and and we have to be able to to take open shots, create open shots. If those shots end up being the three-point line, you take them. If they end up being at the rim, you take them. In a playoff game, if they end up being somewhere in between with the right guys, uh you might have to take those uh as well. Um we just have to consistently get to our wheelhouse uh more often. And they’re 1130s in the second quarter. Is that just a point where I don’t want to say throw your arms up the air, but when there’s No, no, you never do. You got to keep on You have to stay the course. You have to become even more stubborn. you know, there was uh four of those, I believe, that we we defended really well and we closed out and we contested, you know, and they made those uh and then once it it got to, you know, seven or eight, I think those last four, I think we uh you know, were discouraged, you know, just for a short period of time. And and this team, you know, they can make shots. Uh you just have to you have to be um relentlessly uh consistent and stubborn. You have to continue to make those efforts uh and and close out and get a hand handtoball contest. Um even if they make four or five in a row, then that means you have to have to show even more resolve. And so that’s what will get better. Those those whatever it was four, I just remember you those were not the same efforts. Um and and and we’ll clean that up. Talked about after last game about trying to get Tyler more involved in the crunch time offense and we saw ironically DaVon seemed to run point almost exclusively, but Tyler’s motion both like towards the ball and away from the ball seemed to finally create those advantages you guys were looking for. So what were you looking for there? Well, it’s it’s tough to just run a a direct play for him, you know, against this defense. Um so this is something you know we’ve had to develop for for you know a few months getting him off the ball uh creating some overreactions become a lot more um you know patient uh in that game and it opens up a lot of things for us might be different next game yeah I mean we we had taken all the way to two I thought about it I actually put them uh at the scorers table at six to go and um everybody the group wanted to to uh keep on pushing through, stayed with it. Um but obviously uh you know he’ll be uh he’ll be very important the rest of the series. I’m part of Yovic’s just kind of like more quick and decisive decision making. Yeah, that’s who he is. Yeah. You know, he he’s been um you know just a a big- time boost for us off the bench, you know, all year long. Um and and he’s a dynamic uh player. uh you know, so we just look different. You know, he’s on the court, he makes quick decisions. Uh he’s got a great skill level, he’s got size. Um I’m just I’m pleased that he was able to play these 24 minutes in a playoff setting, which is probably like 45 minutes in a in a regular season. He he’s been grinding the conditioning to prepare for this. So much of the conversation before the game was game two spo, you just have a consistent ability to get your teams to turn things around after the game one loss. What is the I guess what is the the key to being able to bounce back both like emotionally and execution wise? That’s the deal. We have to uh we’ll get to Miami. We’ll get to work. All right. Thank you. Thanks.
