Mavericks Face AGONIZING Choice to Trade PJ Washington or Daniel Gafford | Mavs Trade Options
One more thing. Now that the Mavs have Cooper flag, is it smarter for them to trade PJ Washington or Daniel Gaffford in order for them to get the guard they desperately need? I’ll tell you on today’s ass. I’m here because uh I have Dallas is going to get a seat at the table. It’s me versus the machine. Nice penetrating bust to the middle. People forget about hot man the hot player. Wait, wait, one more thing. Yeah, you’re still locked on to the Dallas Mavericks. My name is Nick Angstead, media member, NBA channel manager, locked on podcast network, your team every day. This is the one more thing, a bonus episode of locked on mads. I did a show earlier today talking about lessons from the playoffs. This episode is brought to you by Monarch Money. Take control of your finances with Monarch Money. Use that code locked on [email protected] for 50% off your first order. Today’s episode, is it smarter to trade PJ Washington or Daniel Gaffford? because now the Mavs have Cooper Flag and Kyrie Irving’s going to be out for an extended time next year and they already needed a guard anyway, but they really need one. And these two are the most prominent figures. It makes sense. They’re both going to be unrestricted free agents next season and they have one year. That means they both have one year left on their deal. The Mavs are going to have to make a choice and maybe we’ll learn pretty quickly on if they’re going to extend them or or what they’re going to do on them. And so I’m very curious, but I do think that this question and PJ’s extension elig eligible August 28th, by the way. And so this may be a question we ask for a long time, but we may actually find out the draft, free agency, stuff happens, things move at that point. But I’m asking this question because of the reasons I just mentioned. The Mavs need a guard really badly. In order to get a good player, you have to give up a good player. And you start to look around, you’re like, “All right, should they give up Naji? Well, he’s got a lower contract than the others, maybe.” Kayla Martin, they just got him. That’s one of Nico’s guys. Maybe Max Christie, he’s gonna be 23. Still some potential there. And I don’t think you want to give up too early. Klay Thompson, I don’t know who you’re getting for Klay Thompson. And the Mavericks need shooting desperately. And he already brings that. And you just look down the line and you’re like, “All right, well, who are they going to trade?” Gafford and PJ Washington make the most sense. The Mavs have too many players at the four and the five position and that’s what they play. Like, all right, we’ve got to steal from one position to give to another position. It’s probably going to be at the five or at the four. And right now, PJ Washington slots in as your backup four. Gaffford is your backup five. So, the Navs have two bench players that they could trade and go get some kind of guard that they so desperately desperately need. Even with Kyrie healthy next year, they’re going to need somebody else. I talked about that in the lessons I learned from the playoffs. You you need one more guard. You need somebody else to be able to create some kind of offense, score, handle the ball. Like right now, the Mavs would go into the playoffs if they were healthy with one guy I’m I’m confident can dribble the ball. Kyrie, that’s it. Brandon Williams, I’m I’m not sure in a playoff setting yet. He could. Max Christie, I I’m not feeling good about that. Klay Thompson, I’m not feeling good about that. Hardy, definitely not. Those are your guards. Caleb Martin, Naji, Naji probably could. PJ Washington, we’ve seen at times. Cooper flag. Are you gonna get make Cooper flag dribble the ball? Like you’re just all of a sudden put in this situation and Jason Kid’s crew is put in the situation where you have one guy that can dribble. Oh no. That doesn’t work out very well. And I I don’t mean just like physically dribble. I mean dribble against a playoff level defense. And that’s very hard. So I started to look through the the benefits or the what would happen if the Mavs traded PJ or or or Gaffford. And so let me just walk through the PJ side of it. Let’s say that they decide to trade PJ. So here’s what you’re getting. Your wing depth evens out a little bit. You’re down to five players plus Anthony Davis if you lose PJ Wash. So you got Anthony Davis starting at four, Cooper Flag starting at three. The backups are then in some way some configuration of Naji Marshall, Caleb Martin, and Omax. And so that’s like your that’s your your wing your your forward rotation basically if we’re considering Clay a guard, Christy a guard. And there you’re like, okay, like that’s it’s pretty good. Anthony Davis flag are probably going to play like 30 or so minutes. That gives like 20 minutes for Anagina Martin. And that kind of makes sense. You’re not leaving yourself a lot of room for injuries there. And so that’s kind of tough. If Anthony Davis goes down with an injury, then what happens? You can’t move Gaffford to four. You probably start Caleb Martin or Naji Marshall and then all of a sudden your backups are are you’re in a different spot there. So that one’s that that’s one thing. You do keep center as a strength though if you trade PJ the Babs having two centers in Lively and Gaffford that can go out there defend the rim catch lobs rebound do those things that’s great Anthony Davis wants to play the four I know he he should probably play five a little bit more but he wants to play the four and so he’d be playing the four a lot if they have Lively and Gaffford we’ve barely seen him with Lively we’ve seen him with Gaffford some we really haven’t seen what that that what those combos are yet and so That’s something that I would still like to see a little more. PJ closes more games than Gaffford. PJ plays more than Gaffford. Last year, PJ played 32 minutes a game. Basically, that’s before Anthony Davis. Gaffford played 21 minutes a game. So, you’re losing more time. Now, you do add Cooper Flag and Anthony Davis is now here and that changes some things. But, if you trade BJ Washington, you’re losing more minutes. You’re losing an a possible closer. You’re going to close more often with PJ than you would with Gaffford. And then if you do trade PJ, AD gets his wish and he plays the four a lot, but he’s probably rar rarely going to play five at that point. It’s like very few minutes. And I don’t know if that’s the best thing for the Mavericks. I think a lineup of AD PJ flag is going to be better at times than a Gaffford AD flag, right? Like or or whatever configuration of lineups you you look at. And so that’s kind of interesting. The Mavs also lose another shooter. PJ Washington shot 38% from three last year. I know some people like to say that he just got super lucky in that playoff series last year against the Thunder and that’s the only reason the Mavericks won is because PJ Washington scored every single point for them and that he would never miss the three that entire series and that was the only reason why they won. Shout out to Matt Moore. But PJ shot really well from three last year and the Mavs already they I think they need a shooting now. Like they they I don’t know that they can give away another shooter. I’m not sure what Flag Shot’s going to look like in his rookie year. He was good at Duke. added that for sure. Anthony Davis has not been a consistent three-point shooter. You’re not asking Lively or Gaffford to do that. Naji has not been a good three-point shooter. Was not good last year. Martin did not look confident and did not look good. He can be. So, you’re asking Kyrie when he comes back. Brandon Williams, Clay, and Christy to be like your main like those are your only shooters on the team. You’re you’re lacking so much shooting for a team that needs shooting because you’re playing through your bigs a lot. Like, that that’s that’s tough for me. I’m feeling better with PJ out there than I am with, you know, with like I I would feel better in that in that sense. And so that’s something you’re listening to. Coming up, what does the roster look like without Gaffford and who has more trade value? I’ll tell you all that and more coming up. Today’s lockdown be locked down. Today’s episode of Lockdown M brought to you by brought to you by Monarch Money. Monarch Money is a tool to help you not just manage your money. And some of us need to just manage it. It’s the one more thing where we say one more thing about the Dallas Mavericks. Today we’re talking about now that the Mavericks have Cooper flag and they need to get another guard, who is it smarter to trade, PJ Washington or Daniel Gaffford? Both of these players are good players. I I see the comments every day about why do we keep talking about trading Gaffford? He’s good. He’s better than Lively. Blah blah. Why do we keep talking about trading PJ? He’s such a a a seminal piece for us and he’s so important for us. I get it. They’re both good players. You have to give up something good in order to get something good. The Mavs aren’t just going to give up, you know, like the the Mavs aren’t just going to give up one of their like they need to give up they need to give some a player that has enough value that gets back the player of value that they want. I don’t know that Naji gets you there. I don’t know that Caleb Martin gets you there. That Caleb Martin got you Quinn Grimes for the Sixers. Look, the Sixers just traded him and got you Quinn Grimes, right? Is that is Quinn Grimes enough right now? He could be. He played really well for the Sixers last year. It’d be really nice to have Quinn Grimes on the team this year where you’re going, man, okay, he can at least create some shots. Max Christie, is he gonna is trading him going to give you enough? Is Clay is trading Clay going to give you enough? Like the Mavs, those guys do some things that that you need and they don’t have as much value as the other two guys. And the contract stuff I just talked about is a big deal. The contract stuff is a massive deal because you look at where the Mavericks are and you’ve got PJ and Gaffford that are going to be expiring contracts this this year. And then you look at the other guys and you got Caleb Martin. One of the big reasons why the Mavs wanted to get Caleb Martin is he’s got a couple more years left on his deal. He’ll have another year at 10 million after next season. Naji Marshall, same same deal. He’s making 9 million next year, then 9.4 the next year. Max Christie has got two years and then a a player option. And so you’ve got one more year in control of those guys at a number that’s that’s manageable. Whereas PJ and Gaffford, you have to extend or figure out what you’re going to do with them. So if they traded Gaffford, here’s the here’s my breakdown like I just did with PJ. You trade Gaffford, you keep your wing depth six deep, which is better in my opinion. You have Flag, Klay Thompson, PJ, Naji, Max, Christy, Caleb Martin, plus Anthony Davis. Like the you can never have enough wings in the NBA and the Mavs have a lot of wings. They’d have to figure some stuff out, but they you have enough wings and that is what you need. Your center depth then if you trade Gaffford is so dependent on 80 and Lively’s health because 80 then becomes your deacto like backup center in some kind of way. like Lively leaves the game, 80 shifts up to five, PJ comes in and like and then that’s your lineup, which I think is a better lineup. I think 80, PJ, and Flag is a better lineup than Gaffford, 80 and Flag. That’s what I think. But your center depth would rely on 80 and Lively health. As soon as Lively goes down with an injury, you’re talking 80 at the five like full time for as long as he’s out. Dwight Powell may maybe coming back. He’s on a player option. We’re not sure about that. But that that’s a concern. Like I am concerned about that. AD would play the five a lot more often if you trade Gaffford than if you traded PJ. Something to consider. It it is nice having center to be such a strength for this team that hasn’t had it for so long. And Lively is injuryprone. Like he has been injuryprone. A lot of them have been like these freak accidents, but he’s played 80 games through two seasons. That’s I’m I’m He’s not like an iron man where I’m feeling really good about man. It’s like how is Gaffford even going to play next year, you know? Like I’m not I’m not thinking that. The Mavs also lose a lob threat. I talked about PJ, they would lose his shooting for if they traded Gaffford, they they lose a lob threat, which is something, but they don’t have anybody to really throw lobs except for Flag and AD. Like that that’s not something that’s a huge strength of their team right now. Who has more value? Their contracts are almost the same. It’s actually hilarious. Gaffford makes like $200,000 more dollars than PJ next year when their their contract changes to the new year. And Gaffford is like 40 days younger than PJ. It’s it’s hilarious how those margins are so small. 200,000 on an NBA contract when you’re talking about 14 million each for each one of them. And then Gaffford’s like 40 days younger, not even two months. Like they’re so close in that sense. But I think PJ has a lot more value than Gaffford does. But but but but but but backup centers in the NBA are it’s hard to find. You look across the league and you’re like, man, what would the Nuggets do for a backup center right now? What would the Lakers have done for any kind of center this summer? Look what the Rockets just did with Stephen Adams going out there and playing. Like it’s not that backup centers have no value at all, but PJ is a wing. You know, he can start and close for you in a playoff series. He is a Thunderiller. But maybe one of these West teams would be like, “If only we had PJ Washington, maybe we could beat the Thunder.” You know, like maybe the Grizzlies were like, “I think we would have beat them.” If Jaw would have been healthy and we had PJ Washington, we would have beaten that that Thunder team. They’d be delusional, but they could think that. Who has more value? I think PJ does, but Daffford doesn’t have no value. I think that I think that’s something to to note. The Clippers didn’t really have a backup center for Zubots. Uh the Warriors barely had any centers at They had Quinton Post and then they were like, “All right, what do we do with Looney? What do we do with Trace Jackson Davis? I don’t know. Timberwolves have Nas Reed. Thunder have their two guys. They’re set and that’s where they are on that. You look at the the the East and a lot of a lot of teams are are pretty set in a way. The Bucks could really use a center, but I don’t know who the Mavs are getting from the Bucks. We’re not we’re not doing Giannis on this show at least on this episode of this show. I started to also look through some of the tradeable guards and what their teams may want. This is like completely projecting and hypothetical in so many ways, but I but we made those lists of of guards that the Mavs could go after that could be enough of a stop gap, but then could also could be available as well, but then could also come off the bench when Kyrie comes back. So, like the first one, the obvious one. And I know there was a report the Lakers aren’t going to trade this guy, but Austin Reeves, the Lakers would want a center for sure. Even though PJ has more more value, they would rather have that center because they don’t have one. If they’re going to trade for anything, it’s going to be for a center. And we know Luca likes Gaffford and all that. They would want a center. The Celtics with Pton Pritchard. That’s a name I keep bringing up because Celtics have to make some decisions and next year’s kind of a stop gap year for them without Jason Tatum probably. I think they would want a center. I don’t know what they’re going to do with Porzingis. He’s going to be expiring as well. Al Horford’s older. Gafford like does is not a Celtics player at all. Like he doesn’t make sense to me for the Celtics, but I think they would rather have a center than a than a wing at this point. But I don’t know that that applies to the Mavs. That would be that would have to be complete money move for them. You look at the Kings, I think they would want a wing. They got Sabonis and and Yonas Valentunis. That’s they’re pretty set at center right there. They would rather have a wing from League Monk. He makes like 19 million. So the Mavs would have to throw something else in there. I think if you threw Hardy in there and then the the Kings would have to throw into a really small contract and I think you can make it work. I don’t know that that’s enough for the Kings, but Malik Monk would be awesome for the Mavs. Chicago, they’ve got Kobe White, Iodum, and we’ve mentioned Lonzo Ball a couple times. They would want either. They could take they could take either. Like Patrick Williams really hasn’t panned out for them. They’ve drafted some wings recently and I don’t know that they’ve really worked out. But then you also look at their center position and they’ve got Vu who’s going to be 35 and then they’ve got what Zack Collins I I don’t know what they would want either way. I guess the Jazz with Colin Ston, they would want a wing. They’ve already got Walker Kesler. The Pacers with Andrew Nemhard, I think they would want a center because Miles Turner is an unrestricted free agent and he’s probably going to resign there. But we’ll see. They may not want to shell out money. Let’s see what happens with them. But I just found this exercise interesting because you start to go through and you’re like, “All right, what’s the decision the Mavs are going to have to make?” Well, it does depend on it. It ultimately will depend on which team has one of those players and wants one of these guys. But if you had to pick, if you’re the Mavericks, I would rather trade PJ. I would rather trade Gaffford than PJ. I would rather keep PJ on the roster. But that means PJ has more value than Gaffford. And so you’d probably get a better player. That That’s my That’s my conclusion on this. It’s interesting on either side of it. Thanks for hanging out with me on the One More Thing. We’ll have more episodes all throughout the week, guys. ONE MORE THING: The Dallas Mavericks face a crucial decision: trade P.J. Washington or Daniel Gafford to acquire a much-needed guard. With Cooper Flagg joining the team and Kyrie Irving’s extended absence, the Mavs must strategize their roster moves to also build around Anthony Davis.
Nick Angstadt analyzes the pros and cons of trading Washington or Gafford, considering their impact on the Mavericks’ lineup alongside Anthony Davis. He discusses potential trade targets, mentioning players like Klay Thompson, Dereck Lively II, Naji Marshall, and Quentin Grimes, while exploring how these moves could affect the team’s performance in the upcoming NBA season.

Get rid of hsrdy, omax, powell, kayleb martin .. much more expendable
Trade martin and dsight powell keep pj and gafford they are vital big players for defense
Keep Gafford and we need to decide if we going to trade Klay Thompson or Pj Washington. That’s real question
Caleb Martin needs to go asap
Dante Exum need to go too
Hands-down PJ has more value then Gafford, unfortunately he become so redundant because he lost his spot to AD and now even this position he's losing to rookie which you cannot keep on a bench. If Mavs can get Kai Jones on some small money I don't mind losing Gaff, because he is so one dimensional, we are in age where you have so many skillfull centers who can hit 3, free throws, occasionally make a play, great rebounders – and he's none of that, and paying 20+ for him it kind of seems excessive. Also are you gonna pay 25+M PJ to sit on bench, I think he would be first one to reject any offers if you know he is going to be on bench. We need to dump that cancer Deadweight Power finally from the league.
All of this kinnda reaks on yet another trade with Lakers
Pj is the better move looking at how the league is moving keeping Gaf will be better to keep. Get Prichard then he can go to back up when Kai is back or white from the bulls.
Omax Caleb martindwiwigh powel
PJ needs to develop his shooting. If he works on his middy, one step dribble pull up it would be a game changer. hes great on defense and hopefully we can keep him for the low. We are only going to be able to keep either Gafford or Lively and for our future Lively will be more versatile.. he’s proven to be a good 3 point shooter and he could be our Naz Reid
Hopefully the Mavs can pick up some great lengthy role players. If we don’t keep PJ, I believe Naji can fill his role rly well
Trade Dwight omax for Tre man
Trade neither that's how I feel and just my opinion
Jordan Poole ?
Stop with the CP3 BS, no title contender is signing CP3. Man is like 50yrs old and a negative negative on defense . Imagine Durt or Amen Thomson picking up full court in a play off game. Stop with the dumb takes please.
So disrespectful to Kai Jones, he should be signed. I rate him highly, and you didn’t even mention anything about him.
SAME PEOPLE THAT LOVE LUKA ARE STILL COVERING MAVS BUT TRYING TO DESTROY THEM ,,, GROW UP DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIP GO FOLLOW LAKERS
What’s the best Mavs podcast? Surely it’s Locked On Mavs
Come on, peeps. When the Mavs got the 1.1 pick, it came with a way higher slot price than what they thought they'd have. It will push them past the second apron of the luxury tax. They cannot pick at number 1, Flagg or otherwise, and hold on to PJ and Gafford while trying to also address your need for a playmaking guard.
Honestly, I'd be shopping AD now. But since Nico loves him, I think Gafford or PJ is the logical choice.
Not Gaff, he is a reliable back up 5.
So agonizing to trade bench players 😅😂
Sound's like mavs fan are about to over value PJ and Gafford..
Klay is a negative assest
Spurs fan here. You need a PG, we don't. To keep it simple, the Spurs will take Flagg for Harper and our 14th pick. Flagg says he would like to play with Wemby. You don't want another "VanDeWeghe" defection now, do you. Or maybe you should trade Flagg for Luka, keep Gafford and Washington and ride it out until you get Kyrie back in March. But wouldn't it be much easier to do the Harper trade. And as a result, Nico might get run out of town. Personally, I like Harper in SA. But it seems everyone thinks Flagg is the answer to all problems.😎
Trade Naji
Sad, sad, sad.. PJ, Gafford, Lively, Kyrie, were all an amazing fit and super fun to watch.. but only when they had Luka to make them all great together. Nothing left to care about.
Trade AD
No Brainer…..keep Gafford trade PJ. Gafford is consistent and PJ hasn't been!
What yall think of this trade concept?
Mavs: Coby White, Grizzlies 2nd
Grizzlies: PJ Washington
Wizards: Brandon Clarke, Zach Collins, Grizzlies 1st
Bulls: Jordan Poole, 2 Mavs 1sts
A lot to read here lol
Mavs get solid pg/sg on great contract
Grizzlies get a SF/PF and great fit with PJ
Wizards move on from Poole and gain solid big man depth
Bulls exchange White for a bigger contract and picks without a major downgrade
Sign PG and PF, like Shroeder and Batum or Saric with the money we got. Hopefully Kyrie takes a pay cut and this trade opens up about 2 mil. That way we can afford better vet back ups
Coby, Kyrie, Flagg, AD, Lively
Dennis, Klay, Naji, Nic/Saric, Gaff
BWill, Hardy, Max, Martin, OMax
I thought everyone is banning Mavs untill Nico is gone? So Moral does not matter when you get a free n1 pick by scam?
Well, if Gafford gets traded, we could sign Kai Jones. Still don't want to see either one of them leave. But I totally understand trading them while they have a bit of value.
How about naji?
Trade gafford klay for garland
Trade for Giddey, keep both
Utah – Derek Lively, Gabe Vincent, Shake Milton, Dalton Knecht & LA 2031
Dallas – Austin Reaves
LA – Naji Marshall, Collin Sexton, & Walker Kessler
Who says No?
Keep em both, trade AD 🙄
I prefer Dinwiddie than deal Gafford or PJ.
No No and No
Trade AD. simple as that🤔
Dallas should trade Gafford, Washington, Marshal, and Thomston for Lebron, Bronny, and Kleber.
TRADE GAFFORD AND SIGN KAI JONES TO VET MIN
