Mavericks Fans Get INTERESTING Cooper Flagg Update From Jason Kidd + Latest Mavs Coaching Rumors

Welcome into Mavericks today by chat sports. I’m Jeffrey Cooperson. Great to be with you guys here on a Tuesday. And Jason Kidd said something interesting yesterday that we need to talk about. Could Cooper Flag possibly be playing shooting guard for the Mavericks next season? not small forward, not power forward, which is what we were accustomed to to him playing at Duke, but could he be playing the two alongside Kyrie Irving with the Mavs next season? We’ll get into that here in just a second, but I do need to ask you guys to hit that subscribe button. Our goal is to get to 32,500 subscribers as soon as we can. We’re about 350 subs away. Help us get there as soon as possible. We’re covering the Mavericks with daily news and rumors, the latest on Cooper Flag, the latest trade rumors. We got some coaching rumors we’re going to get into on the back half of today’s show. All of that can be found right here. It’s youtube.com/mavsttv. Hit that sub button right now. We know that this is the type of team that Nico Harrison wants to run. He wants to be a extremely defensive defensive, excuse me, versatile team that has guys who can switch one through five and play at basically the highest level possible on the defensive end. Off offense be damned. And if Cooper Flag is going to be playing the two, that’s kind of what this Mavericks team is going to look like. It would be an extremely big lineup with Cooper Flag at Shooting Guard, who is basically 6-9 with shoes on. If you had Kyrie, and this is, of course, when Kyrie uh would come back in January, you’d have Flag at the two alongside Washington at the three if you were to keep him with Davis and Lively in your front court. And this would easily be the biggest lineup in the NBA. And I this is a way to play. I’m just not sure it’s the way to play in today’s modern NBA where everything is based off shot creation and ball handling and floor spacing. You’re not going to get a ton of floor spacing with this lineup on the court. And it’s just not something that I think that the Mavericks should try to uh deploy at an extremely high rate. Cooper Flag is a forward. He’s either a small forward or a power forward. I think either way it would be good. And if you threw him out at the two alongside Kyrie, you’re creating a problem that you don’t have with shot creation. Like Flag is not going to be the best playmaker. He’s not the best shot creator for himself. Now he can kind of playmake within the flow of an offense, but it absolutely would be a problem. When you look at how the Mavericks have had success over the last couple of seasons, it’s been with multiple ball handlers on the court. It’s been with Luca and Kyrie. It’s been with Spencer Denwitty and Kyrie. It’s been with Den Witty and Brandon Williams. They always have two ball handlers on the court at any given time. And when you take one of those out, it puts an extreme amount of pressure on that primary ball handler to try to initiate the offense and get the Mavericks into the flow of things. You just need more than one ball handler on the court. And I’m not saying Cooper Flag can’t handle the ball by any means, but it’s certainly not one of his main strengths coming in to the NBA draft. Here is what the Ringer draft guide had to say on Cooper Flag’s handle. He said, “Flag’s handle is a work in progress, but not in a discouraging way. He’s evolving by the minute in the sense that in the in that sense, and has shown that he’s quick from a standstill and has blossoming technique at the elbows or facing up out of a post up. Duke worked to create on and off ball opportunities for Flag in an effort to keep defenses from packing the paint. And in a 40-minute game, which the college game is, Flag did average 4.2 assists to 2.1 turnovers per game. So, if you’re doing the quick math there, that’s a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio, which is what you’re looking for. I would like to see Cooper Flags playmaking ability uh take the next step and bring that part of his game to the next level. And if he can do that, I absolutely believe he can be a franchise cornerstone piece for this team going forward. And I’m not asking Cooper Flag to come in here and be an extremely polished product. He doesn’t turn 19 years old until the middle of December. So, this is a guy who’s coming in extremely young, who it has a more polished game than most would expect for a guy who’s 18 and a half years old. But if you’re going to put him out on the court, I think you need to have two ball handlers out there or someone like a clay Thompson who is able to handle the ball in an emergency situation. I just I don’t think you can have a Kyrie Irving or Brandon Williams or whoever at the point guard surrounded by three wings or Anthony Davis and Dererick Lively. I just don’t think that style of basketball works anymore here in the NBA. So, if I’m the Mavs, I’m heavily leaning towards Cooper Flag playing small forward or power forward in the coming uh years, but we’ll see what Jason Kid decides to do. We know Jason Kidd, we know Nico Harrison, we know what they like, we know what they value, and they certainly value defense over everything. So, I could see Flag playing the two. What is Cooper Flag’s best position? That’s what I want to hear from you guys down in the comments section. Do you think it’s shooting guard, small forward, or power forward? Let me know down in the comments section what you think Cooper Flag’s best position is. We’ll get to the rest of today’s show here in just a few moments. Just a couple of news and notes before we get on out of here on today’s show. Sean Sweeney has made it to the second round of interviews for the Phoenix Suns head coaching job. Uh, and Sweeney has been in head coaching rumors before. Jared Dudley was also interviewed uh by the Suns as he was a former Suns player, but he did not make it to the next round. And it feels like the last three years of uh Sean Sweeney has been rumored to potentially be in this head coaching cycle. I believe it was Milwaukee that he was involved in as well. I know he’s coached in Milwaukee with Kid. So, he’s had multiple opportunities to become a head coach and he hasn’t quite taken him up yet and he’s still been uh the lead assistant in Dallas for the last four seasons. So, we’ll see what happens with Shawn Sweeney, but the Mavericks would be well equipped to replace Sweeney if he were to leave. They do have Frank Vogle on the staff as a coaching consultant who obviously won the 2020 NBA title with the Lakers. So, if Sweeney were to leave, the easy thing to do would just be to promote Vogle to the head of the bench. And Vogle was already uh one of the architects of the Mavericks defense this year. I know he was heavily involved in the game plan that beat the uh Sacramento Kings in the playin. So, while losing Sean Sweeney would be disappointing as he’s one of the best assistants in the NBA, it’s always a good thing when your assistants are getting interviewed for head coaching jobs. So, I think the Mavericks are going to be well equipped to handle this loss if it comes to that. And then another thing that we have to talk about here, and if you just want to get mad at the Mavericks, here’s your opportunity. The New York Knicks have been named the 2425 NBA TA Athletic Training Staff of the Year. New York’s training staff is led by Casey Smith, who you may be familiar with, VP of sports medicine. The team also or the team also includes senior athletic trainer Heather Mau. Smith and Mao are former members of the Mavericks training staff. These are the guys that Nico Harrison said weren’t good enough and he replaced with guys that are better according to him. Well, Nico also fired those guys this off season as well. So, pick one. Pick your struggle, Nico. Basically, it it was just a disaster of a decision letting go of Casey Smith. And we all know that that was a big factor into the Luca Donuch saga and the rift between the front office and Luca. The rift that currently exists between Dirk and the Mavericks right now is heavily uh because of the treatment of Casey Smith and how he was fired and all of the fallout from that. Jeremy Holppel and Deion Calhoun as well who are part of that staff are regarded as the best in their field. It wouldn’t shock me whatsoever if Dion Calhoun ended up on that Knicks training staff under Casey Smith who he worked for for about 20 years here in Dallas. And the the whole training staff shakeup and the mishaps and the mismanaging of the training staff is just an indication of Nico Harrison wanting to hold all the cards and wanting to have all the power and make all of the decisions in the Maverick’s front office. And you could I look and this is crazy. That’s what I’m about to say. I know the Luca Donic trade was the worst trade in NBA history and was a power trip and all that. The way that he has handled this training staff may be a worse indication of the power and the just the overall feeling he has that he needs to be the one making all of the decisions. No matter what it is, whether it’s basketball, whether it’s the training staff, whether it’s the business side of things, Nico wants to be the guy and the training staff is just another indicator of that. And at the end of the day, Nico has a Mount Everestlike hill to climb in order to regain the trust of everybody. The Mavericks winning the lottery does not give Nico a jail out of get out of jail free card. It does not give him forgiveness, so to speak, for what he’s done to the Mavericks organization over the last couple of years. He’s got a hell of a hill to climb. And like I and I I’ll continue to say this. I don’t think winning a championship is the end all beall, the huge fixer of the Nico Harrison problem, so to speak, here in Dallas. I think he has even more to do than winning a championship in order to get people back on his side. But like he said, only time will tell. I want to ask you guys before we get on out of here. Do you trust Nico to lead the maps? Pretty simple question. If you do, type Y for yes and let me know down in the comments if you do. And if you don’t, type N for no. I think all MFFLs are pretty much going to be typing their ends, but if you type your why, let me know down in the comments. And that will do it for today’s show, guys. Appreciate you for tuning in to Mavericks Today by Chat Sports. And of course, if anything happened surrounding the Mavericks, we will have it covered right here. It’s youtube.com/mavtv. Hit that sub button and we’ll see you soon.

Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd is excited for the Mavs to take Cooper Flagg first overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, but what position will Flagg play for Kidd? Mavericks GM Nico Harrison wants to build a big lineup, which means Flagg could potentially play shooting guard alongside Kyrie Irving, PJ Washington, Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively. Mavericks rumors on Flagg have been hot ever since the Mavs won the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery, with all indications being that the Mavs will take Flag with the No.1 overall pick.

  1. Calling it now. Flagg at SG. Def has the skillset. Going to trade for KD to be our 3. Going to flip PJ, Gaff( not going to lock them up. Cant lose them for nothing)and other players+ picks to PHX. Will sign Kai Jones to a multiple year deal to replace Gaff. He was a perfect fit for this offense/system. We are about to roll out an absolutely Massive long athletic 2way Demon Lineup/Rotation. Kyrie, Flagg, KD, AD, Lively. Good luck stopping that… 😂🤣

  2. Trade a pick for KD?

    Draft Ace Bailey?

Ain’t no way that’s gonna happened, ace ain’t got no defense whatsoever and KD ain’t it either to help Mavs win

Cousins better think twice with nonsense cause that won’t happened

  3. I feel like the Mavs may pick up Ace Bailey at 1 he will end up being more of a super star

  4. Man this guy obviously doesn't know basketball look at the Knicks line up 😅he'll Brunson is the primary heart is a under size 3

  5. I mean we all die hard Mavs fans. We have to start being honest with ourselves and other Mavs fans. Nico told no lies about Luka. The stuff that leaked, we as Mavs fans knew for years. With that said I was still pissed even though I don't believe Luka will play passed 32 because he does not love the game like that. Again being honest, if Luka has a Jason Tatum type injury no Mavs fan believes that Luka would put in the work to recover to 100 percent and would likely be over 300 during the rehab process. So, yea the move was stupid by Nico because he really could have gotten more but he told no lies and IMO we are better for it as we speak.

  6. The only thing that would clear Nico Harrison with the fans in Dallas is for Luka to breakdown in the next few years health wise and never get back to the western conference championship again let alone the NBA championship. As much as I would like to see Austin Reeves beside Kyrie in Dallas, I do not think Nico can have any business with Rob Pelinka ever again. Not even winning an NBA championship with AD, Kyrie, Flagg, Lively, and Klay would make up for the way Luka was traded. But Nico will never be allowed to tell the truth about that the decision to trade Luka. Dumont was the owner that decide not to pay Luka the max contract he was due this summer so, Nico had no choice but to trade Luka now.

  7. Bro, just when I thought we were getting some Mavs positivity, here comes the negative energy again at the end. Let's move on.🙄

  8. And don’t forget we experimented with Naji Marshall at Point guard. Now that would be a huge crazy good defensive team.

  9. If Nico already know he's getting the first pick with the Luka Trade… do u think he need to be forgiveness and we can trust in him again, because its a really good trade?

  10. Pj and Gafford for Ace Bailey and a few picks. Two 14mill players out, and two 14mill players in(Ace and Cooper)—this time on a 4yr contract. Sign Kai jones for cheap. Makes perfect sense but nooo…mavs fans always want some ‘kuzma’ or ‘coby white’ (or god forbid da vida vida…)when the easiest and most profitable move is Slapping them in the face.
