While you’re there on this tremendous Tuesday, as my daughter told me, coming into work today, Tim Ko, what’s going on, man? What a what a night. What a day. That’s all I had. That’s all you got? Uh, what’s up, Bobby? Despite how it looks, I’m wearing purple. The rest of y’all are all wearing black today. I thought we were This is not purple. This is so purple. Are you kidding me? This is extremely purple. What are you talking about? You got to relax, Bobby. This is black. This is not the same color. Y’all are all in mourning. I’m the only one that’s celebrating today. Last night, after the show ended, I had like three more slices of pizza. I am on cloud nine right now. In about 6 hours, I’m going to take the longest nap of my life. Mark Stein, be our tiebreaker. Is that purple that Bobby has on? Maybe at once. At one point it was. Jeez. On today’s show, Carella. We’re going to investigate Bobby and his uh newly discovered color blindness. Probably wasn’t. I mean, your daughter had to watch us act like she ridiculous people. When I tell you my daughter was in her own world with her tablet watching PBS Kids and Blues Clues and everything else, she didn’t have a clue what was going on until we got in the car. She said, “Daddy, I’m hungry.” “Okay, baby. I’ll get you something to eat on the way home.” No problem. Uh says, “Daddy kept you way too long than what he needed to.” That’s because we were celebrating last night the fact that Cooper Flag is going to be a Dallas Maverick. The Dallas Mavericks win the NBA draft lottery with 1.8% 8% odds, the fourth lowest odds in NBA draft lottery history. Rolando Blackman, the representative for the Dallas Mavericks tonight, grinning from ear to ear as Mark Tatum handed in the card that had Dallas Mavericks number one in the NBA draft lottery. Swift reaction across the entirety of the NBA world, obviously given the circumstances of what this team has been through over the last three months, but specifically to last night. Tim Ko, a surreal scene in Chicago for Mavericks fans who have been wondering when something positive was going to happen. Uh they got it in the form of one of the most unexpected things that we’ve seen uh or maybe expected depending on how you feel about it uh in NBA history, man. I mean, the streets are saying that was all rigged. Well, rigging is beautiful. Mhm. Rigging’s on its way up. It’s There’s never been a better time in human history to commit a little light fraud. Wow. Yeah. Sounds young, I guess. No, it’s it’s just I that’s that’s the thought I keep coming back to. I I I tweeted this last night, you know, Monday morning. This feels like I was in a different city. uh feels like a year ago, you know, published the results of a of a exit survey, a fan survey, and like 80% of people, the last question was very simple. Are you excited for next season? 70% of people answered, you know, least excited, you know, like 90% of the fan base, you know, to the extent that was representational, uh, you know, just look around you. Look around at at any Mavs fan. Look around at any Mavs community. There was nothing to be excited about. There was nothing to talk about. This was headed in a very, very stale, bleak direction. And all of a sudden, just overnight, that changes. That is the beauty of the NBA lottery. That is the beauty of the script writers in Adam Silver’s office who did the remarkable, did the unbelievable. You guys don’t really think it’s rigged, do you? I’m asking the three of you. My three I’m asking the four of you because Tanner’s in Tanner’s in the funniest outcome. I’m asking you guys, do you think it’s rigged? I think I think the funniest defense of it is like uh Ernston Young is some like paradigm of of morality like they’re they’re above such things. That’s right. You know, that is the funniest defense of it. Uh spare me with that. But no, I do not think it’s rigged. I think that uh Americans struggle with probabilities. I want to ask questions. Let me say I think they struggle with probabilities. Let’s just say the script writer was cooking in the way that this has gone down uh in the last few months leading up to last night. I watched the entire 13 minutes of the actual uh pingpong ball being dropped in and the combinations being revealed. So what do you think after that? It’s unbelievable. Like the odds of them actually winning that and them getting the actual combination like it was when the number one pick was revealed you didn’t in the room was like it was just a hush because they still had you know two four to go. you have these sheets, okay, with all these combinations. So there’s a thousand combinations and so if I guess if you have 1.8% you have 18 out of a thousand combinations. So like you’re going through the sheets trying to figure out like what what if you have it like and yeah then all of a sudden you just hear this voice Dallas Dallas you’ve won the lottery like and I’ve been in I was in there for the WBY lottery in 2023 as you said it’s on YouTube I posted a link to it today on my Substack. The link is easy to find. You can watch the whole process. Like if they are rigging that thing they are magicians. I don’t I don’t I don’t possibly see how it could be rigged, but I say that knowing no, there is nothing I can say to dissuade zillions of people from thinking that it is rigged. And I was actually on a on a radio show late last night and they asked me, “What do you think the league thinks about this?” And it’s like, we’re 40 years on from the Patrick Euing supposed frozen envelope supposed when he bashes it into the side of the Tumblr. like they just have to live with this. There’s nothing that And Adam Silver will have a press conference at the finals. And I’m sure he’s going to be asked this, but like there have always been conspiracy theories in the NBA since the 80s, since I was in high school, since the Knicks won the Patrick Euing lottery. So literally, it’s been at least 40 years of conspiracy theories in the NBA. This is the 40 40th anniversary of the Patrick Euing lottery. So they’re not going away. But I’m not sure I’ve ever heard it as loud as this. Like literally I mean in our chat after I mean everyone in the world is shouting rigged rigged rigged. It’s rigged. Yes. And it’s like it is like I would love to know behind closed doors in New York. What does the league really there’s nothing they can do to change this perception? Well, they flatten the odds a few years ago to discourage teams from tanking. And we’ve seen now what the last two years in particular Atlanta who had similar odds to winning the NBA draft lottery. They win it. The Mavericks make the biggest jump in NBA draft lottery history, going from 11 to one, jumping 10 spots, and they win it. So, it’s rigged. In some ways, this is what the NBA kind of wanted. It doesn’t necessarily It doesn’t necessarily benefit you to tank based on the way that they flatten out the I disagree that it’s what the NBA would have wanted. Let think about it critically. If they really wanted to rig the lottery, would they reward the team that did the thing like or would they just ensure that Cooper flag goes to Brooklyn, for example, because if it’s all about feeding the big market con there are so many people convinced that Adam Silver called the Mavericks and said, “You must trade Luca to the Lakers.” That did not happen. But again, there’s there’s like I know nothing I say is there there are there, you know, people are going to believe that that was a deal. Adam Silver called them out, said, “You trade Luca, we’ll make sure you get Cooper flag.” Like, yes, that that’s what happened. This is not going to happen because like then you’re also assuming that Kyrie faked a torn ACL. Like they were not gonna they were going to make the playoffs or at least certainly the plan. When the trade was made on on February 2nd, the Mavericks were not trending to be in the lottery. That’s right. They did not know that. Great point. The way you just said it. They did not know that Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irv Irving were going to play all of one game together post trade. Yeah, it’s just it’s just not going to you’re no, it’s not worth all of that stuff. And also, I know the uh Deont and and Miriam are very rich. Um do you think Patrick Dumont is aware of who Cooper Flag is? Do you think he actually is like would be great? Let’s hope he is now. Maybe he is now, but he’s not. He’s definitely not soccer practice. Yeah, he was so locked in. He was at He was at He wasn’t even watching. So, like I don’t think the owners care. And uh you know, based on what a lot of people said about Nico, I’m not sure Nico cares all that much either. I reject it because it’s the the the conspiracy the it was rigged. It it bleeds too much into the conspiracy around the Luca trade, which I I have been saying, we all have been saying this entire time are are incorrect. When it comes to conspiracy theories, I’m a I’m a big soft conspiracy guy where people in power let things happen that are going to that are going to keep happening. I’m a big soft conspiracy. So, but but this is this is too it would take too much involvement. JP Canrell trying to start a fight with Kevin Gray. That’s the kind of thing I was going to say, but I was like, I don’t want Kevin Gray jumping across this table and, you know, is there angrily defending his true favorite sport? Is there a paper trail that comes down from the league office that says uh to the referees rig this rig this game because we want this team to win? No. Uh does the NBA is the NBA very aware of the referees and their tendencies and how they might factor into certain players in a star series when they go about assigning referees? I’m sure they have some awareness of that. Uh now are they act I’m not I’m not actually saying that that is what they’re doing but that I could get on board with you know that type and and there’s just there’s no soft conspiracy that allows you to rig the it’s al you can also talk yourself into believing that any outcome is rigged because whenever you get to the moment where it’s like the Spurs get the number one pick. Oh that’s perfect. Pop had to retire and they have Wimi and you have the best international prospect and now the best American prospect. That is so perfect. Oh my gosh. Let’s say it’s the Hornets. Oh, they have Brandon Miller and LaMelo. This team needs to be so good. Oh my gosh. And the Mark Williams trade completely fell apart. Let’s get them Cooper Flag. Oh, and Cooper Flag went to Duke. And where is Duke? That’s in North Carolina, which is where the Hornets player. Like literally any Brooklyn. Biggest market. They suck. Let’s get him there. Like every usually my talking point. But you got to admit that like in this one, Dallas is the I just don’t think so because why would you you wouldn’t reward ineptitude. like because and again I’m arguing a stance I don’t believe in. Uh I I do not actually believe it was rigged. But in this argument, you have a fan base in Revolt who is threatening to take away support and engagement from the team in the fourth largest media market. I do get how it would be in the NBA’s interest to, you know, try to uh revive what is a a fan base that is losing, you know, interest like that. I at least get how that is the juiciest possible play. I just don’t I don’t know if that’s I just say there is no story I would rather break in my career than unearthing that there is an actual rigging conspiracy like I would that would be like the greatest possible story six weeks to figure it out say got time to get to work on it like and so I mean it just you know before it was all it was all a conspiracy so the Mavs could move to Vegas what happened to that that conspiracy is now done because does it make it more likely are less like where are we on the Vegas ometer right now that they have Cooper flag like more or less likely I mean to that one it’s kaput in in my eyes it’s that’s a done deal I thought that was h oh yeah it’s a done deal cuz they’re moving deal no they’re not moving they’re not moving Rick Wel said why aren’t y’all talking about the stadium well they’re playing in the stadium in a few months they’re going to Vegas I mean and Mark I want to get your thoughts on this because one of the things that obviously with them having the odds that they did to win the draft lottery we talked about how the lottery odds have been flattened over the years to discourage quote unquote tanking by NBA teams. We saw the Utah Jazz, who had the worst record in the league, go from first to fifth in last night’s draft lottery. Do you subscribe to the idea that this is working to discourage teams from tanking? Because we’ve seen now over the last couple of years teams with very low odds actually climb up and win the draft lottery. I think it will be a talking point, but I mean look, there are so many different examples in this lottery. Like Utah the the LA Utah traded go Baron Mitchell. The first two seasons they started 26 and 26 and then tanked. You could say that was a much more ethical tank than this year when they just flat out said we’re going to be the worst team in the league. They got fined 100k for not playing Lowry Markin. I don’t even know how many games Mark and end up playing, but it was well shy of 60. Like the Jazz outright tanked this season. 17 wins, worst record in the league, and they dropped to fifth. I think the league’s happy about that if they were telling us the truth because that team set out to tank from day one of the season and did not get rewarded. Now, on the flip side, the Philadelphia 76ers were the champions of the off season last July. They sign Paul George. All their guys get hurt. They go on a hellacious second half tank where Quinton Grimes becomes all world the only guy who gets all the shots, but they finished 24 and 58 because of all these injuries. They have three max contracts. And the Sixers got rewarded to a huge degree. Maybe not to the level that the Mavs did last night, but the Sixers tank totally paid off. I mean that that could be considered more of an ethical tank than what the Utah Jazz actually I mean some would say yes and some would say no because I mean Philly in March and April the Sixers were were trotting out some unsightly lineups. Let’s just say still beat the Mavs. Um they beat the Mavs and they captured the Grimes. So So all’s good in Philly. And so like that that one’s where I mean Philly was worried about losing. I mean, Sam Prey is actually in the drawing room because if that pick falls outside the top six, the Thunder get it. The 68 win Thunder suddenly get a lottery pick and instead Philly jumps up to three. Then you look at a team like Washington. They obviously tanked this whole season, but they played a all their guys are young. They played a super young team. I don’t think around the league it was viewed at as egregiously as as what the Jazz were doing. But then it’s like, man, the Wizards finished sixth every every in every lottery. Somehow the Wizards are sixth, sixth, sixth, sixth. And I’m sure their fans are going, man, we’ve been suffering forever. We haven’t had a 50- win season in forever. And the Mavs trade Luca Donic and get the number one pick. So, there are so many different competing perspectives. And there are a lot of there are many I think there are many more unhappy teams today than happy. Sure. So, I don’t know where it goes. I think it all speaks to the fact that they have never figured out the answer to this. And whatever system they try, they make tweaks, they make changes. Like, there are still going to I think there will almost always be more unhappy teams. I mean, it’s not just the Mavs. I mean, how many how many front offices today are looking at the Mavs and the Spurs? The Spurs. Yeah. Three straight years in the top four. They win the Webby lottery. They draft Castle who wins the rookie of the year and now they get number two. I mean the Spurs are teeming with assets to go after Giannis Antakmpo if Giannis actually ass out of Milwaukee. So and the Spurs have already won. I was not thrilled with that. Not thrilled with that. Bobby’s Bucks. the I mean the Spurs and the Spurs when they win the lottery it’s like Rob Robinson Duncan Wemby just so I’m not I am not smart enough to come up with I am not one of those reporters who’s like hey here’s my solution to fix the lottery. I’ve been covering this league for more than 30 years. I don’t have it. Um, but I I really hope that we get some earnest dialogue about this the next time Adam Silver holds a press conference because I would I would I would love to know the true conversations that are happening in the league office or even just among league people in Chicago today because it’s like conspiracy talk has never been louder than it is today. We will get to your super chats as well uh throughout the course of our show here on the DLLS Mavs podcast. The NBA draft lottery of course took place last night in Chicago. The NBA draft combine also underway. In fact, Tanner Cooper flag working out today for scouts and of course for the Dallas Mavericks. Cooper flag as you can see uh if you’re watching us live knocking down three-pointers running from corner to above the break and knocking down threes uh again during that is a big sturdy threeman Bobby Carlla straighter. Yep. That is a big Oh, he missed. Delete it. That is a sturdy two-way wing. It is. If you’re listening on the podcast, you can go back and watch on DLLS Sports as Cooper Flag getting his shots up from the three-point line. uh working out at the NBA draft combine, Bobby, which gets us to what the Mavericks are going to be getting with this particular player, a player that was a sensational uh freshman at Duke, of course, with the Duke Blue Devils leading them to the Final Four and puts together a profile both defensively and offensively that I think Mavericks fans are obviously going to love given the skill set that he brings on both ends of the floor. Yeah, I mean, especially defense. Now, he is obviously a really talented offensive player. Um he’s 18 years old. Last year he shot 38% from three, 84% from the free throw line, which suggests that he’s got legit shooting touch. Average 19 a game in college. Offense is going to be interesting with him because, you know, depending on how you set up your team is really going to in kind of dictate what he does on offense. He’s definitely more than a catch-and shoot guy, but he’s not quite like a Luca or Jason Tatum run your offense through him type, at least right now. And so it’s kind of good in that respect if the Mavs were healthy that he’s playing off Kyrie and AD. Now we’ll talk about his fit in the next segment, but what can he do today? So he can defend today at an NBA level and he can defend multiple positions. This is the kind of guy that can fit really in any scheme and as you start talking about trying to compete for playoff spots, for titles, you know, you have to look at how the opponent is going to attack you. teams go mismatch hunting and flag is he’s 69 Stein like you said very sturdy he measured in at 6’8 with no shoes 220ish I think 225 maybe even at the comment a frequently cited comp is Kawaii that is a lofty comp physically he’s built like that 7 foot wingspan he’s long he’s strong uh he can move his feet he’s explosive he has a pretty good vertical leap for a guy his size like he is very very versatile on defense um in ways that the Mavs haven’t had. Like, go back to last season. Derrick Jones was wiry and quick, but he couldn’t defend up. PJ defends centers, but he can’t really defend guards. A guy like Maxi Cleba in his prime could switch off everywhere, but he wasn’t quite as quick. He was very explosive, but he wasn’t quite as versatile or dynamic. Like Cooper does all of those things on defense. And so, you know, Nico says defense wins championships. Obviously, that’s the number one focus. So I everything you have to do starts with defense and he fits in there. Offensively, Tim, he can do a little bit of everything. I’m not sure right now that he’s doing anything great at an NBA level, but he can do everything well and that is a terrific starting point. Yeah, you mentioned you mentioned how he’s not Jason Tatum. Um, and obviously unfortunate timing, Tatum. Yeah, my I didn’t mean it like that. No, no, no, no, no, no. Uh, but Tatum, I think, is a good comp for what he could be. He’s just not that yet. Um, but I I don’t I don’t think there’s any concern that Cooper is going to come into the NBA and be in any skill set, in any phase of the game on the offensive end, be a negative player. Y, he’s going to add. Now, how much can he add? Is he going to just be an average spot-up shooter, or will he make strides in his rookie season to be better than average as a spot-up guy? Um I I think I think right away he’s going to be he’s going to be a plus guy in transition. Uh he’s he’s going to be he’s going to be awesome on that end. Uh but you know how much of a playmaker is he going to be? We know that he’s not he’s not tunnneled visioned. You know he he is somebody who can make simple reads will make simple reads consistently almost every time. How do the complex reads start to you know start to grow? How quickly does he get the hang of that? But but he’s going to be, you know, and we’re talking for the entire NBA, not just for rookies, for the entire NBA. I think he’s going to be an average playmaker from the moment he starts playing in the NBA. There’s going to be rocky moments. There’s going to be some adjustments, of course, but he’s going to be an, you know, an average play playmaker. A guy who can uh, you know, make those simple reads, you know, when eighth in the ACC in assist percentage last year. Yeah. Yeah. He’s he’s he’s he’s going to be a good passer. He’s going to be a a good shooter again like an average passer, an average shooter. um an average uh you know guy who just kind of muts it up and and and get gets points and I don’t know like a Josh Hart kind of way you know just like those those hustle points just knowing when to cut knowing where to be like he’s going to be at least average in all these ways offensively with so much room to grow. He should be graduating high school right now. He reclassified. He’s 18. Literally he reclassified so that he could get to college a year earlier and now he’s going to be pretty much the youngest player in the NBA. while already being so capable. I will say defensively I I I do think that he is, you know, my understanding from talking to people, from listening to people, uh point of attack is is probably his weakest area. He can guard up and down and that’s an enormous enormous plus, but he’s not he’s not a Herb Jones, he’s not an OG Anobi shutdown guy. That that’s a he’s not quite that, but he’s going to be such a plus defensively just because he’s always in the right place. He knows where to be. The versatility is the versatility, the the team defense and and then the weak side, you know, the the shot blocking is the is the crown jewel that everybody is, you know, I think everybody is aware of his, you know, his ability to protect protect the rim um as a as a 4.9 block percentage last season. Yeah, that’s ridiculous. That that is that is absurd. That is probably better than Derek Lively’s was last season. Maybe not quite 1.5 steals, I think. So, yeah. Yeah. 1.5 steals per game, 1.5 blocks per game on average last year for Cooper Flag. One of the things I’m excited about uh the competitive spirit of the young man uh was going through and just watching some of the highlights uh and competitive moments that he had with Team USA as they were getting ready for the Olympics. I mean, he is going right at Anthony Davis. He’s going right at Drew Holidayiday. He’s going at some of the best in the NBA. And I think the confidence of the young man having been on a big stage, obviously what he did with Duke leading them to a final four and all the expectations that he had coming into his freshman year and then exceeding in a lot of those uh in a lot of different ways. I’m excited to see what he does against some of the best in the league from Jump knowing that he has got a lot of confidence about his game already. Uh and I think the experience with Team USA is going to pay dividends for him. uh knowing what he’s going to be expected to try to help bring, but also understanding this is still a rookie. The learning curve for him and how that’s alleviated with some of the skill set that he already has, I’m excited to see what that looks like, Bobby, because that’s for him. Um he’s got a lot of things that you love on both ends of the floor. But I think the competitiveness uh is something that I think folks will really enjoy about about Yeah. No, for sure, man. He’s a dog. He’s a dog. Um, now last year at Duke played on a college version of a super team. Uh, but still number one in the NCAA in box plus minus, number one in the in the whole NC in all of D1 in offensive box plus minus and number five in defensive box. You just brought this up. So I I I’ve been trying to load this. It finally loaded. I was trying to load box plus minus for dating back to 2000 for all of college. There are only 10 people who have hit 15. And box plus minus it’s a it’s a you know it’s a box score stat. It’s a it’s a all-in-one encompassing stat. Uh there are 10 college players who have who have had a season where they hit 15 in box plus minus. He is one of those 10. Uh he is one of only three freshman. The other two freshman, Zion Williamson and Anthony Davis. Pretty good college. outside of Wimi, you know, for college prospects, Cooper Flag is in that trio in terms of the best number one picks and younger than those guys were and he’s he’s more I mean, he’s going to be 22 when his rookie contract ends like Yeah, I think I think with Zion’s injury history, uh Cooper Flag is the best prospect since Anthony Davis. The best domestic college prospect since Anthony Davis. Oh, wow. That’s how good he is. Daryl my just last week said that in his estimation, Cooper Flag is pretty much the most valuable singular asset in the NBA because of his talent potential and the fact that his first four seasons will be on that rookie scale deal. I mean, then that’s the thing is like what did you say last night? 13 million next season. Cooper Flag is a $13 million player next season. Is It’s unbelievable value. Yeah. Real quick, his rankings in the ACC last year, top 10 in defensive rebound percentage, top 10 in assist percentage, top 20 in steal percentage, top 10 in block percentage, obviously scored uh a whole lot of points, ranked third in points per game, literally does everything. Made the conference all defense, was conference player of the year, was national player of the year, was everything player of the year. Uh much like LeBron, everyone has known who he is for five years now. Grew up with his high school and AAOU games being aired nationally. Like LeBron got a taste of him in the Olympic. Yeah. Played with Team USA. Like he is he is built for this. He’s ready for the moment and all that stuff. Like he is just it is it’s just unbelievable that he’s that if the Mavs do the right thing that they will take him and that he’ll be on their team. Let’s talk about the fit for Cooper Flag on the other side of the break with the Dallas Mavericks. How he fits alongside Anthony Davis and others in what is should be a dramatic NBA draft for the Dallas Mavericks. All that more coming up next here on the DLS Mavs podcast rigged. Oh, is is that is something’s in my Oh, that’s that’s the Mavs future. Oh my gosh. Oh my god. It’s so bright. It’s so bright. It’s blinding me. Wow, man. What do I do? While you’re there, let’s take a look at the fit now for Cooper Flag when it comes to the Dallas Mavericks. Of course, with Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving as the centerpieces of this team, Kyrie Irving coming off a torn ACL going into next year. Anthony Davis looking to have a healthy year after missing six weeks due to an abductor strain. Did come back to finish up the season uh with the Mavericks before ultimately falling in the playoffs. I want to read this quote uh as we get ready to discuss this because I found it very interesting. Um, this comes from Mark Stein’s good buddy, um, Jake Fischer when it comes to the Dallas Mavericks and what they did in terms of the winning the draft lottery. Uh, Mavericks assistant GM U Matt Ricardi spoke uh, on it and he said, quote, “There have been ups and downs since the trade to go from a finals run to the lottery. None of us expected that, but we played the right way down the stretch and didn’t tank.” End quote. Uh that is the quote from assistant GM Matt Ricardi who was in the room as the ping pong balls uh were being dropped and the Mavericks of course winning the number one overall pick. So Tim Ko, how does Cooper flag fit with this current version of the Dallas Mavericks? We talked a lot about it yesterday and we’re going to be talking about it a lot in the the coming weeks uh leading up to the NBA draft, but it’s like he’s going to make your team better. just point blank like there there are fit questions but questions isn’t really the right word. Uh questions has such a negative connotation. There are quit uh there are there are fit uh possibilities. There are there are a lot of directions you can go with this all of a sudden you know I I I don’t think at any point and and maybe not even now Dallas has been interested in moving on from a player like PJ Washington. Um and PJ can come off the bench and and he can fit great. Um, you know, it’s just a matter of of are you are you sliding up or are you sliding down? Is Cooper Flag going to be your four, going to be your three? Uh, you know, he’s he’s going to be a starter. He’s going to be in that starting lineup. Uh, is it going to be Anthony Davis, PJ Washington, Cooper Flag? Oh my goodness. Imagine how switchable, you know, imagine how much uh you’re not really giving up rim protection by not having not having a center with which obviously Anthony Davis is. Uh but you’re not you’re not losing anything in this scenario if Derrick Lively is is now the guy coming off the bench. Uh you still have you know Anthony Davis and you know you just defense galore. Um there’s a very decent chance that they’re going to explore the trade market for PJ Washington. It just that is the reality Cooper as they should. So as I want to ask Kevin Gray who’s the resident PJ Washington expert among the four of us, how does that how does that sound? How does that sit with you? Uh it’s fine. Um like I mean it’s fine. It is I mean look standing on business. I mean if we’re going to stand on we’re going to stand on it. that I mean he’s the contract that he’s eligible for is a four-year nearly $90 million extension. That’s tough if you’re going to have him coming off your bench paying him that kind of money, but he doesn’t want to do that. Exactly. Um so a situation for him to go elsewhere to be a starter because he’s earned the right to be a starter in this league. Uh he is that been he has been that good for this team and he can help another team somewhere else. But getting Cooper flag makes him expendable. Um, we mentioned the amount of money that Cooper Fl’s going to be making over the first four years of his deal. The ability to have highlevel players on more podcast draft comes along and you guys say, “Man, Stein, good knowing you. You were expendable. We got to You’re you are priceless, Mark Stein. You’re not going anywhere.” Um, overlapping skill set. That’s right. Exactly. You’re versatile. You You’re not going anywhere. You’re the You’re the face of our show. You’re untradeable. Yeah. You’re not going anywhere. So, I don’t I mean, you don’t you do not want me as the face. Maybe the hat. I’m the hat. You You do have the only hat. You have the hat. Um but yeah, I think Cooper Flag makes PJ Washington and I think it would be smart of the Mavericks to explore the trade market for him. If you’re going to continue to make your team better in the immediate, uh PJ Washington can give you the ability to get better in the immediate. Yeah, they got too many wings. They got too many too many wings, not enough guards. Kyrie. I mean, again, we need to do not forget that Kyrie Irving is not going to play basketball until 2026 and maybe not the first couple months of 2026. Like, if the most optimistic timeline is missing around 50 games, I’m not feeling too good about that, you know? And so, all of a sudden, you have way too many wings, a lot of them on good contracts. Cooper Flag, one of the best contracts in the league. PJ Washington, really good contract, expiring. Naji Marshall, really good contract. Like you can reduce some of the uh Wait, Naji’s untouchable. Hold on a second. Pro knife podcast. Pro knife podcast. We were a pro PJ podcast and look where we are. But here’s the you have if you want to make the playoffs, you have to find a way to shore up your playmaking. Yeah. You know, uh Tim did a good job laying out defensive versatility. I think wingspan, wingspan, wingspan. Cooper flag 7 foot wingspan. AD 76 wingspan. Lively 77 wingspan. Naji Marshall 71. PJ Washington 72. You got wingspan galore on this team, but one thing you don’t really have is a lot of quickness. You don’t have guys that can stay in front of the quicker guards. I have all the confidence in the world that somebody like Cooper Flag, just as we’ve seen with Naji and PJ, can defend some of the bigger, bulkier, hulkier dudes, right? But the Mavs still need someone that can defend the quicker players. Uh Derrick Jones did a great job of doing that. Josh Green, maybe even a more athletic somehow player than Derrick Jones, did not do a good job of that for the Maps last season. So, it requires very specific skill set and there are only so many guys that can do it. If you can trade from an area of strength, whether that’s a guy like Gaffford also on an expiring or PJ or both for a player that can fill that role defensively and assume some of the playmaking duties that you are lacking without Kyrie and maybe even some scoring punch uh in the process, you have to explore that. that is that is you that you you are that is your duty as GM whoever the GM will be whether it’s Nico or someone else whatever they have to explore that now do they pull the trigger on that I don’t know if they don’t though there is still a glaring playmaking hole on this team until Kyrie is able to come back and again we don’t know when that will be don’t assume it’s going to be January just cuz you saw one person tweet it one time two months ago we don’t know when that will be Kyrie doesn’t know when it’s going to be that’s not how rehab works That’s not how recovery works. So you have to nobody in his camp. And again, the most optimistic is missing 50 games plus every backtoback when he comes back plus who knows how many more. Like that’s the most optimistic. You have to make it by. And again, you’re dealing now with the number one pick in the draft. Guy under a lot of pressure with a lot of expectations. You need guys that can make his job easier. Sure. You need guys that can serve him uplooks. You need guys that can will keep him from having to defend the point of attack on defense. like you you need to you need to bolster your strength while also masking your weakness and they don’t have many guys that can do that right now. Meanwhile, they have redundancy at several positions in the front court. Their front court is Yeah, they should do what they can to to, you know, fix that balance. And and look, I I am my basketball philosophy is of the uh position that you cannot have too many wings and and so agreed. You keep saying too many wings and I hear you. I think the most right thing to do is that PJ is a big now and that he is your backup center that Anthony Davis you are playing the five or you’re playing the four and PJ’s playing the five if it’s all about numbers like that then what do you do with Lively is he on the team is on the team but but you are building in some level of of injury uncertainty with him and uh it’s dangerous to go in with six starters man I’m not going to lie but more importantly you have to have a grown-up conversation with Anthony Davis at this stage in his career, 13 years in, you’re playing the five. The spacing is terrible with him playing at the four, you’re going to get a guy on Cooper Flat who can do so many things both offensively and defensively. It maximizes his potential for him to play the four and for Anthony Davis to play at the five. I understand he doesn’t necessarily want to do the banging and being down on the block, but damn it, this is the best thing for this team, especially at this stage of where they are to maximize the kind of winning that they want to do. Like, I’m tired of the whole conversation. He wants to play the four. He wants to play the four. Damn it. Get your ass in there and play the five. Do what you got to do for this team. Like, okay, so the Mavs can say you need to do that and he could just say no. Then what? You got to go. Like, you got to go. Like, when are we going to find this team doing the right thing for the team to win moving forward? The best thing for this team is the Anthony Davis playing at the five. There should be no debate about that 13 years in uh to his career, especially given the team that you have right now. He’s just got to accept that fact to play the five. That That’s just where I am. I I also so Cooper flag last season Duke was you know one almost the best team in the country. Obviously they didn’t win but they’re one pretty much the best team in the country. Well also they did so much to build up and develop Cooper Flag who was 17 for most of the season. I do think that to get the most out of Cooper Flag to some degree, you have to think about how to put him in the best environment and a lot of his game, you know, he’s not a perimeterbased, you know, jump shooter. He’s a driver. You know, a lot of what is going to be good for him and a lot of how he’s going to become a better offensive player, you need to make sure there’s some spacing. You got to make sure that that there is some room for him to to navigate in there. And I do worry that if it’s Cooper next to, you know, Clay Klay Thompson, obviously that’s, you know, one of the best spacers there is in the NBA, but then the other two players are Anthony Davis and Derek Lively. That worry that worries me a little bit. I I I feel a lot better if it’s PJ Washington. Dude, you saw the way teams were defending PJ. There ain’t no space whenever he’s out there. They leave him open. They leave him wide open. The Thunder did it for a whole playoff series. Everyone saw that and was like, “Yeah, we’ll take that chance.” Yeah. But I mean, that’s the modern NBA. At least he goes out there. If it’s if it’s Anthony Davis, he’s going to be in the he’s going to be in the interior. If if it’s Derrick Live, there’s just nowhere else for those guys to go. I mean, the the when we’re talking about offensive spacing at this point, we’re talking about your own spacing. Do you have the players who can actually go out beyond the three-point line? Because Dallas, as it stands right now, is potentially going to be starting two players who really don’t have a lot they can do past the three-point line. whether so if if PJ can go out there all he wants but if his defender doesn’t go out there you’re not really solving the problem you know the problem still remains that there’s just an extra guy in the lane waiting for you and so it’s you’re not wrong it’s it’s I mean it’s tough obviously it’s it’s not desirable you know my my opinion on the team construction well chronicled um but yeah I I I don’t know I I really don’t know it’s it’s really hard to imagine a way to smooth out these problems um without making a major major change to your team. And I don’t know if that’s going to happen. Um but I think there’s a way to kind of play center field and make it work for this season and potentially next season without, you know, trading AD or trade Kyrie, blow the whole thing up, whatever. Like I think you can still put a really really good team out there that will be top 10, maybe even top five defense with very few weaknesses on defense and then a serviceable offense, but it does require making more moves. uh you got to go get some guards and and some shooting. You need some shooting really really badly. And I see those in the chat saying, “Well, AD is better at the four and this and that and the other.” But at this stage in his career with the amount of front court size that you have, I believe the best way to maximize the roster given the construction that you have now that you’re going to be adding Cooper Flag to it is that Anthony Davis play at the five and allow him to be able to be that defensive anchor and give try to give some more of that space to guys like Washington like Flag to be able to operate because otherwise uh you’ve got a real problem because Derek Lively is a rim runner and a guy that’s athletic as a big it doesn’t work necessarily with him at the four uh and then Cooper Flag however you want to try to figure it out. Uh there’s a lot of issues there that I think it behooves the Mavericks to ensure that Davis is playing at the He won a title as a five. Exactly. And that’s the other part. He did win a title as a five with the Los Angeles Lakers. Uh for those who don’t remember back in 2012, in the playoffs, that wasn’t the regular season. We’re talking about the play. You can get by in the regular season, but you need that spacing, especially against good teams and in playoff situations. They need that. Let’s take our final break here on the DLSM podcast. When we come back, we’re going to get to your super chats as well and discuss your feelings as well when it comes to what happened last night and moving forward for the Dallas Mavericks and Cooper Flag. All that and more coming up next here on the DLS Mavs podcast. But first, the time has never been better to become a diehard. Every sports team in Dallas has something good going on right now. I think the Wings obviously getting Paige. How about the Mavs getting Cooper Flag? Cowboys all of a sudden they get George Pickins. Is it is it their year? Troy Aman says so. Uh Dallas Stars, it might actually be their year. The Rangers make a couple moves and all of a sudden, hey, they want to they scored two runs last night. They won. They’re on fire right now. Nearly 700 folks watching us live and debating us when AD comes to a four and a five. Appreciate all of your engagement uh here on the DLS. Man, it’s an annoying It’s an annoying problem. And it is it’s a great yes. It’s an annoying problem and it’s it’s it’s player, you know, it is AD’s um preference, you know, and now you’re you were having to build a team going into this offseason. You’re building a team around AD and Kyrie. Now you have the opportunity to remake your team around a 19-year-old. Now, I’m not going to call him a generational prospect, but he might be. Who knows? No, he is. He Tim Ko says he is. M we just went through the the the box plus minus. We just went through how he was the youngest best college. Are you as confident as me that they’re drafting him? I’m going to say it. The Dallas Mavericks will draft Cooper Flag. The Mavericks will draft Cooper Flag. There have been three freshman since 2000. Three freshman. One of them is Zion, though. It’s Nothing is guaranteed. That’s all I’m saying. Nothing is guaranteed. Zion did not fail on the court. No, I know. He failed because he’s not on the court. I know. I know there’s no there’s just no guarantees. Are you as confident as me? It’s gonna happen. I’m not as confident as you are. They’re not going to trade They’re not going to trade the number one overall pick. We’ll explore some of that. I think Yeah, I think it’s fascinating. That’s the first place my brain went. But let’s get to some of the uh the super chats before is leading off with that very question. That’s right. That’s why I wanted to get to it. 999 super chat. Why do y’all keep acting like we’re already got Cooper flag? Nico Harrison still running the show. I’m worried he’ll do something dumb again. I won’t be fully happy until the pick is official. There’s still 10 minutes after they announced the pick, too, that he could be traded. So, don’t, you know. Well, let’s walk down that timeline very quickly before we get to my sub45 that I ran yesterday, uh, after the draft selection was made. Um, if you’re Nico Harrison, and there’s a lot of conversation around in the win now mode that he is in, let’s walk down the road of him operating the way that he has so far. If we were to believe that he’s got a two to threeyear window, he traded away a 10-year runway. Now he’s got a potential five-year runway or more with Cooper Flag going forward. If you’re of the mind that Nico Harrison wants to stay in that mode, why would he keep this particular player and this pick if his window is two to three years? It would make sense if you’re Nico Harrison and you’re walking in his mind that he would move on from this pick to go get a win now player that can maximize his ability to win a championship within the next year or two. Don’t do it. Because I am gullible enough to believe that the new owner of the Mavericks, Patrick Dumont, has learned some very hard lessons over these past three months. Sure. and would not first of all we don’t know that that is what the front office would want but let’s just play along and say that is I’m going to be gullible enough to believe that ownership would not let him make that trade and that I’m going to be gullible enough to believe that collectively as an organization three months removed from a trade they should not have made. I want to believe the Mavericks realize deep down they should not have made the Luca Donas trade they made. They did not get nearly enough back for him. And again, they have been granted a get out of jail card the likes of which we have never seen. I’ve heard this compared to Anthony Davis asking for a trade in New Orleans and then New Orleans wins the lottery. Like that was foisted on the Pelicans. They didn’t, you know, Anthony Davis requested to be traded. They didn’t willingly trade Anthony Davis and then win the Zion lottery. I’ve seen this compared to the Cavaliers losing LeBron James and then winning the lottery three of the next four years. But again, the Cavaliers didn’t want to trade LeBron James. LeBron James forced his way. I mean, didn’t for LeBron James was a free agent and went to Miami of his own valition. The Mavericks traded Luca Donuch when they should not have. I think Patrick Dumont has learned the hard way what a mistake this was. What a I mean the column that the former mayor Tom Leopard wrote in the in the Dallas Mor news last week was incredible. I mean he really spelled out all the ways that this was a a violation of the unspoken trust between a franchise and its fan base. They now have this incredible get out of jail opportunity to they have a guy who should be a cornerstone for them for years and years and years. And I I I I just I want to believe that there’s no way that they would forfeit the opportunity to draft young Mr. Flag. If word Nico has even taken calls about it, then that is grounds for termination. In my opinion, that is grounds for the franchise being taken away from this ownership that you like again. But we can’t rule anything out because clearly this look that that that sentiment expressed in that super chat and people are going to be nervous and worried about this until we get to draft night and until Adam Silver walks up there and says the words with the number one pick in the 2025 NBA draft. The Dallas Mavericks select from Duke University, Cooper flag. Until those words are spoken, people are going to be nervous about it. Can’t like the way you played Adam Silver there. Um, nice job. Wow. Cat approval. That’s right. I’m moving up in the ranks. Um, like, yeah. So, people are going to be nervous about it, but but I I’m going out on a semi semi- sturdy limb. That’s one of the universes that you have to walk down when it comes to dealing with this particular general manager and the way that he’s operated uh with this team. Yeah. Yeah. It’s the It’s the first place my brain went as well because it’s all from a from an analyst perspective, from a basketball, it’s it’s all so juicy to think about everything but Cooper and trying to figure out how it would make sense in, you know, Nico Logic. But it comes down to that I just don’t think he has that that leash anymore, you know, like even even if he had the desire to trade, I don’t think he has that leash from from Patrick Deont. Um I don’t and and then the the salary structure is honest with $50 million. You’re not you’d have to trade your entire team. Your your team is already bad. Like you have a bad team right now. Imagine how much worse it would get if the many gifts that were bestowed last night. Again, we’re just going to keep hammering this. Like to get a player of Cooper Flags ability and potential for four years where he’s four seasons where he’s making less than $20 million is like it’s unbelievable. It’s it’s it’s an unspeakably amazing gift from the basketball heavens. Aussie D with a $1.99 super chat. I swear Kevin ran a sub45 when he when we won the pick. I think we know Super Kev’s burner now. Um wow. Wow. Um surprised he didn’t say sub44. Kevin, I know. I feel like sub43. You’re putting up Jaden Blue numbers. Touchdown. Uh Yah Billy with the $5 super chat. they end up picking flag. I would be shocked if the NBA doesn’t schedule Maz versus Lakers or Mavs versus Spurs on opening night. Shout out to Yogi Frell and Salah. Mav Spurs opening night two years in a row, right? Yes. Sala the baller. Every year Mavs and Mavs should play the Spurs every year on opening night. And they will also play in summer league too. Summer league. Are we going to Vegas? If Cooper does. I mean, Vegas, baby. No, we’re not gonna have to fight over that. Uh Azie D with the $1.99 super chat. Uh back in again. Can he guard the Lakers guard? Not saying his name. I’m imagining you’re referring to again. Point of attack like isn’t he’s he’s good. He’s good at versile. He’s going to be awesome. He’s he’s a better defender than he is an offensive player right now. But yes, like he he’s a good enough point of attack defender that that he can handle Gabe Vincent. I’m not worried about that. Like Cooper Flag like he will be able to shut him down. I’m glad you were able to dispel that. Thank you so much. Uh Tyler with the $1.99 super chat. Would any of you trade the pick to Los Angeles for Luca Dodgers? No. There you go. I mean, it’s just it it doesn’t work like that. It’s just I can’t That’s so hypothetical. It’s so non such a non-starter. Yeah. I mean, again, you’re giving up all your team. You’re giving it It’s just guys make too much money. The the math it’s just it doesn’t make any sense. Also, I just wouldn’t do it back, you know. Would you make that swap again with the Lakers would never do? Uh, yeah, but that actually makes sense moneywise. Get Maxi back. Yeah. Oh, wow. Oh, wow. Thank you very much. Thank you very much, Bobby. I appreciate that. Your birthday. Yeah, Bobby had a birthday over the weekend that he refused to tell us about. So, happy birthday, Carella. Thank you, Carell. Illustrator, TM Ben. So y’all wish Bobby happy gold that GM Ben I rigged the lottery. Oh my god. That was me as a gift to Bobby. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Your birthday. Shout out Tim and Kevin Kuck and Brandon Spano and the the whole squad for making sure that happened. You got a speech. Speech. Speech. Speech. That was it. Uh LFG. That’s my speech. Okay, there you go. See I’m going to have one of these blue ones. I know you’re saying I can’t wait for overtime so I can say LFG. Oh yeah. Words. We’re not going over. We should go to overtime just for me to say that and then we can log off. Oh well, Bobby as he cracks open the uh the cupcakes for himself. Y’all make sure you wish Bobby a happy birthday. Uh 750, but I appreciate you. We have time to get older than the flag. Uh we do have time to mention uh almost double. That’s right. Um couple playoff games tonight. Oh, number one. Uh the season could be 16. Gosh. Uh the season could be ending for the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight. They’re down three games to one as they play game five tonight in Cleveland. Pacers uh Donovan Mitchell a game time decision for the Cleveland Cavaliers. He’s dealing with an ankle injury. Pacers up three games to one looking to finish that off. Last night the Knicks took a three games to one lead in their best of seven series over the Boston Celtics. Uh Jason Tatum left the game in the fourth quarter um with about three minutes left. He is dealing with potentially a severe leg injury. Um the MRI has not been revealed yet in terms of how deep that injur how bad that injury is uh for him, but the defending champs are on the ropes. Uh and also you’ve got game five tonight between the Nuggets and the Oklahoma City Thunder. That game will tip off at 8:30 p.m. Uh with that series tied at two games a piece with that series shifting back uh to Oklahoma City. Would the Mavs rather see, Mavs fans, would you rather see Jaylen Brunson in the finals or Rick Carile in the finals? That is what we’re staring at in the face uh right now with both team pondered it that way. That is a that is Carly would be in his second conference finals in as many years. Jaylen Brunson Rick Carl could not stop winning playoff series as a Pacer in his second with the Mavs. From 2011 to 21 from 2012 to 21 they won how many playoff series? I believe the answer is zero. Zero. What was Oh my god. Why is my brain Who’s the team they beat to and then went on to lose to Denver? Spurs. They beat the Isra that was his absolutely championship in game three against the Nuggets. That game happened on my birthday, by the way. Um a robbery. Oh, it was Antoine Wright, though. You got to wrap up. He found it. Doesn’t matter. He fouled him. He fouled him. He fouled him. You got to wrap up. He fouled him. You got to wrap up. Antoine Right. Team is going to win the title. It’s either Rick Carile, Jaylen Brunson, or one of the two teams that the Mavs beat in the playoffs last year. Unless the Nuggets pull off the impossible. Either way, Mavs fans will have a fresh reason for they will be. That is a great poll question. That’s a great segment. That’s a great show that we can talk about tomorrow cuz we’re out of time on the DLLs Mavs podcast. I sincerely appreciate all of you joining us here on our show today. The shock hasn’t worn off, but this is still reality. The Dallas Mavericks won the NBA Draft Lottery and the right to draft Cooper Flagg No. 1 overall. What kind of player is he, and how would he fit on the Mavs alongside Anthony Davis and (eventually) Kyrie Irving? Is it a smooth fit, or do the Mavs need to make some other moves to work it out? The DLLS Mavs crew breaks it all down one day after the luckiest day in Dallas Mavericks history.

LETS GET DLO
Imagine having Luka, Brunson and Cooper Flagg on the roster^^
what a load of trash the NBA is
long after mavs fans who have been through all circles of Dante's Inferno (no relation to Exum), I'm happiest next for Jason Kidd who has been nothing short of spectacular during his chaotic time in Dallas.
The Dallas sports market is the most relevant as it's ever been. The haters are mad.
No one said anything about Vegas
Y’all are hyping him up a bit too much. We’ll see how he does against NBA competition for an 82 game season. #FireNico
Congratulations, Dallas fans. As a Spurs fan, all I can say is: "Nico was right. History has already decided." What a night!!!
We need Luka!
Thank you Adam Silver! 🎉
Are y’all sure that we’re not trading this number 1 pick?
geee guys who work for the nba media denying its rigged. what a surprise lol. its clearly rigged. this isnt the first time some nutty odds won out. it happens at an alarming rate that defies the numbers. im guessing it was to keep the dallas market from annihilating itself, fan upheaval of this magnitude is bad pr for the league.
Number 32 is in Dallas baby! Welcome Cooper, good thing the Mavs have a couple Blue Devils waiting for him.
I remember watching Olympic scrimmage, Flagg was looking right at home on the court with the US team. That was before this season and Flagg was already very close to Lebron's size. Considering he's still under 20, he's likely gonna grow, might end up bigger than AD. Exciting times for Mavs fans, now only need some more guards until Kyrie is back.
Nico Harrison victory lap
Can almost guarantee Nico finds a way to screw this up and trades Flagg for another player like KD or Giannis. I really hope not because Flagg would be such a good fit and gives us a future again, but after trading Luka absolutely nothing would shock me.
Luka who?
Nico will trade #1 pick and Kyrie for Ben Wallace. Remember defense wins championships.
Mavs should go get Chris Paul to be a backup guard to Brandon for cheap
MFFL
All I’m going to say is NDA
PJ, Martin, Hardy for Derrick White
What's wrong with Flagg playing the 6th man. And closing games.what would it take to get salmons from Portland. Or b will salmons and klay off the bench
Wrong, Davis won championship playing the 4. They had Dwight Howard and Javale McGee as backup
44:49 McGee and Howard were the centers on that team.
Nico Harrison has traumatized the Dallas fan base; we don’t trust him to make good decisions anymore.
What if Houston rockets missed out on the superstar trade this offseason. Are they interested in taking a chance by trading for Kyle Irving this summer?
Luka being traded was just half the reason for the rig… The more important reason is Flagg hinting he might go back to college. Really bad look for the NBA. Bring Dallas fans back + ensure Flagg goes into the draft. 2 birds 1 stone.
These guys are stupid if they think this lottery is not rigged……cognitive dissonence or stupid you decide lol.
Losing Luka was a kick to the balls. Nico should still be fired. That trade was epic stupid! But getting Flagg is a blessing! Imagine having Luka and Flagg. Sadly it probably wouldn’t have happened. Luka would have probably taken the Mavs deep into the playoffs. KI probably wouldn’t have gotten hurt. So as a fan of the Mavs (not Nico) I am super excited about getting Flagg. We can win now and have a foundational player for the future. 😎🙏🎉
Kevin’s stance on AD being a grown up was needed for Luka….never heard that though.
51 minutes in…Preach!
AD & PJ + parts and picks for Giannis…?
Bobby is so wrong, AD won the title as a 4.. McGee and Dwight Howard was the 5… AD became the full time 5 after that season and they been losing since he been a 5
Bobby needs to be trashed on every video…. I don’t get how he say our team is bad but other teams can and will get better.. But we won’t… He needs to be fired
You guys are hilarious. You have no idea what you have in store. "Average passer" LOLOLOLOLOLOL "Average everything" LOLOLOLOLOLOL This guy is SPECIAL but you won't get it until you see him every day. SPECIAL in every phase. SPECIAL He just got out of high school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SPECIALHis twin just graduated, Cooper leveled up. He will be better with better teammates. That's what's held him back the last 2 years. You wait. SPECIAL! I'm from Newport, played with his grandfather, Cooper is SPECIAL. Congratulations! Save this comment. By December you'll see I'm underselling him.

We are so back
PJ/Cooper duo will be insane. 48 minutes of STRAIGHT DAWG🐶
Lol . This shit is 100^ rigged
