HOUR 1: Utah Jazz draft rumors | Inside Texas writer Keenan Womack talks Jazz draft prospect Tre …
The noon hour is here. Check it out. And you’re locked on to Utah’s highest rated, most listened to sports radio station. It’s my station. It’s my station. This is Hance Olsson and Scotty G on 975, the KSL Sports Zone. Hey, let’s do it. Hans and Scotty 975, the KSL Sports Zone. The gang is all back together again. You didn’t even miss me, did you, buddy? Uh, I missed you. The listeners really missed me. No, nobody missed me. Uh, Lloyd already sent me a text and said, “Why don’t you just stay in Boston?” Uh, Scotty doesn’t want you. That might be just personal on Lloyd’s part. Brandt doesn’t want you. Brandt says that you’re unruly and unhelpful. But I missed you guys. Well, we desperately missed you. At least I did. I can’t speak for Lloyd, but yeah, I actually needed you to get back because Scotty was pretty much insulting every one of our guests. I as usual. Oh, no. It was a slip of the tongue. It was It was a It was Oh, tell me it’s not Kurt He’ll tell you what. Let me grab it. Let me grab I’m going to grab the audio. We can play it later. What if you No, cuz that all you’re doing is you’re just gonna uh Well, we need a rule. I won’t edit it. I won’t edit it at all. How bad did you offend Bowler? Well, you know, Lloyd usually stays pretty quiet in interviews. Yeah, Lloyd popped in real fast on this. Uh because I had said, and I say this all the time. I’m like, when you’re gone, we just load up the show with a lot of guests, you know, instead of dragging somebody and making them a co-host and wrecking somebody else’s schedule, I just be like, hey, you know what? Let’s just load up and and talk to everybody. Yeah. And and have some fun. I always say it takes a takes a village to fill in for hands. And so I’m telling that to bowler. I’m like, “Yeah, you know, Lloyd’s out there. We’re booking anybody and everybody.” Oh, I think it sounded a lot worse than that. Anybody that’ll take a phone call. And that’s how Lloyd thought it came across. Uh, and then so Lloyd makes it worse, honestly. He’s like, “Babull, you’re not anybody and you’re not everybody.” Lloyd, tell me you dropped the, “Hey, Scotty, go to hell.” Yeah. Well, and I don’t think Bowler was offended by it until Lloyd kind of had to reset and go, “Oh, but but we’re not talking about you, Bowler.” I’m like, “Of course, nobody’s talking about Bowler like that.” It was Bowler’s weekly conversation. It’s his regularly scheduled appointment. It wasn’t like we went out of our way to schedule Bowler. Were there any text exchanges? Were there any apologies? Did he Did he text you and say, “Hey, real nice.” No, Scotty. No. He said it was a pleasure as always coming on with you. Well, I’m glad to be back and I am ready for my full dissertation on the interest and ethics of Bostononian leaders of the early 18th century. Wow. Look at you. You got your PhD in American history now. I did, man. That was four days from 7 am till 10 pm of cramming in as much history as I could possibly cram in. And I could not be more happy about it. My wife, not so much. Yeah. There’s two different types of vacation people. There’s one who is going to map out every second of every day and then the other person that’s just like, “Hey, let’s wake up when we wake up. Let’s eat when we ever feel hungry. And let’s just go with the flow. You are not the second. You are the first. I am the first. And it is from wake up until late night. It is a go session. There’s just too much to do. You know, when you go in a place like Boston, hey, you’re spending good money to go on a trip like that. Yeah. I mean, this is how crazy Boston is. And this is a true story. You can ask Amanda. This is how crazy Boston is. So, we’re driving back from Lexington at Concord where we had spent about 12 hours. Like, it was a jam-packed day. Got there bright and early and we ended up leaving a little bit later in the day. It was probably more like 10 hours. And we’re on the back we’re on the way back to Boston because we had this duck tour planned, which is a car boat that half the tours on land and then it goes into the Charles River and goes all over the Charles River. And it it’s kind of a cool deal. And we’re on our way back and we’re like, “Oh man, we we got to stop and hit this Mike’s Pastries because it was it’s the big thing in Boston.” Yeah. And so we Googled Mike’s Pastries. And so we stop we pull off the road to go to this Mike’s Pastries and we’re like, “What is this whole to-do?” Like because it was all buzzy and old looking and it was like, “Oh, there’s a Harvard tag. Is that Oh, this is Harvard’s campus.” And we’re like, “Oh, we’re at we’re on Harvard’s campus.” So we got out of the car and walked around Harvard’s campus like, “So this is Harvard. This is where all the smart kids go, huh? We’re We ended up in Cambridge somehow.” Did you feel enlightened? No. No. I was like, “Dorks.” Did you go tell somebody how you like them apples? Bunch of nerds. I did. I did. Yeah, I did. Slap up uh somebody’s phone number on Amanda’s phone number like, “How about how you like them apples?” Oh, well, the guy at the counter was like, “We only take cash.” And I said, “Well, at least I’m not unoriginal.” I did not. That’s awesome. They only take cash. I’m like, “What do you mean you only take cash?” Well, you should know that if you know anything about Mike’s Bakery. I’m like, I didn’t know much about Max Baker other than you guys had a good cannoli. Was it good? Was the canoli good? Yeah, it was beyond good. Yeah. Yeah, it was beyond good. The second best thing to touch. Yeah. To touch my taste buds. Number one being the lobster roll. The lobster roll lived up to the hype in Maine. In Maine. Mhm. What part of Maine did you go to? Had three different types of lobster rolls and the one in Maine was by far the best lobster roll. Was it hot or cold? Um, one was hot, two were cold. Okay. But I I had to kind of try them all. And the lobster roll is definitely worth the time. Worth the money. 36 bucks for a lobster roll. Oh. Oh, yeah. It’s 36 bucks per roll. And it’s 6 ounces of lobster. So, it is it’s definitely a bit of a sacrifice. They’re not making Not with Miracle Whip either, I’m assuming. And no, it the the best one that we got in Maine, we got at a place called Cape Elizabeth, and it’s just this little town that’s north of Providence. It’s up It’s up a little bit higher. Yeah. And we Yeah, we got the And the lobster has just a a very little mayonnaise, but it’s just big chunks of lobster. You said 36 for a for a lobster roll? Yep. For 6 ounces. Yep. You know, there is a place here that is actually like right pretty much that same price and it’s only 5 ounces of lobster and it’s 36 bucks and it’s like it’s pretty close to about that same exact price. Isn’t there a place in Utah like a truck that won like the best of lobster roll in the country? Yep. That’s in the country. In the country. Yeah. Beat out all the Rhode Island ones. Tell me I went all the way up to Maine. Three hour drive talking about by the way. Uh and the clam chowder up in Maine is is better than the clam chowder in Boston Massachusetts. Okay. And I had a lot of clam chowder. I I eat my weight in clam chowder over my time. You like it? Cuz I I I’ve seen both where it’s like kind of more like a a broth based and then some where it’s a cream based. Yes. So the the Massachusetts clam chowder is more of a thick um chowder. Yeah. The main clam chowder is more of a soup. Okay. And I like that better. Like a creamy soup. Huge chunks of clams. Like you bite into a clam, you’re like, “Oh, that’s a full-blown oyster.” Like that’s a sucker is going to have a pearl with it. It’s a massive chunk of meat and it’s good, man. It was really good. The food was good. Did you uh did you did you mix it up with the locals? Was there any incidents that we need to worry about? No. No, but I did send you the video. Um I I begged the buck the duck boat tour guy to let me drive and he did. Hans was driving. He did with the whole with the whole crew like you know we had all this these students that were on this big bus thing and I was like come on I’m not going to run into anything. They’re like yeah you will. But anyways I took the will. This is like hours after that boat from Mexico or Spain crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge and you’re like I want to drive. I was like wow the timing of that I don’t know if I would have been on board with that. I guarantee you some loudmouth Idaho was driving that like, “Hey, just let me take the wheel for a minute.” I drive all the time on the snake. I can figure this out. This is not hard. We’ve got those metal flat bottom boats. Promise you I got this. No problem for me. Don’t forget our mass is over 85 ft tall. No problem. No problem. We got it. That bridge is at least 95 ft. That’s 10 ft of clearance. Everybody just shut your mouth. Enjoy your ride. Fine. I got this. Oh, it was great, man. A dude, I’m so glad you’re back there. And as always, sat watched a lot of sports, man. A lot of sports. It was great to watch Florida advance. They put a whooping on. And by the way, Toronto fans are not happy. Oh, no. They were throwing their jerseys out again. They were throwing their sweaters out on the ice again. Man, they’re a bunch of crap. Every time Mariner touched the puck, they were booing him. Hey, if there’s a chance for the Utah Mammoth to get Marner. Yeah, let’s go. Let’s go. Because that guy will come to Utah and he’ll do everything he can to stick it to the Toronto fans. That that dude is ticked off. How could any one of those Toronto Maple Leafs players even look at the fans in the face after what they did? They weren’t eliminated yet. And there were like 85 sweaters that were thrown on the ice in game six but or game five before you even get to game seven and win game seven in Florida. Like that Toronto fans should be embarrassed, man. Well, it’s like they they think that they’re the uh you know, I can’t even say the Dallas Well, you know what? Maybe they are the Dallas Cowboys where they talk a big game, but they ultimately don’t do anything. Look, nobody from Canada’s won a Stanley Cup in 36, 37 years, but yet here they are prancing around like they’re they own the NHL. You’re like, “Hey, you haven’t done Jack squat, man. Quit acting like it.” Yep. And then you’re going to run out a player like that and he had media availability earlier today for, you know, locker room cleanout and they’re like, “What are you what are you thinking?” He goes, “Well, you know, I’d really love my time here in Toronto. It’s going to be You read between the lines.” He was like, “I cannot get out of this town fast enough. Fast enough. I am out.” Game five, those guys, those clowns were acting like it was elimination. And then Toronto has the guts to go to Florida and force a game seven. Like that was gutsy what they did. And and they had to do it away from their fans, but then they go back to their fans and they’re like, “You know what? Our crowd sucks.” Yeah. You know what? Let’s lose this one six to1. And watching Florida put three on them just like that. Boom. Isn’t it weird how sometimes those goals will just come in a pack of three? Yep. And you’re like, it’s like celebrity deaths. It was 00 all through the first and all of a sudden it was like what? Celebrity deaths. They happen in threes. They typically do and they happen quick. They typically do cuz we had we had a a group about a year ago that went down. The Dolly Parton group. No, Dollyy’s still with us. No, no, no. Dolly’s gone for sure. No, Dollyy’s still very much alive. Dolly Pardon? Yeah. Let’s not let’s not kill off Dolly. She was just in the Super Bowl like just a couple years ago or No, Dolly’s Dollyy’s still very much kicking. Are you thinking of uh Oh, I don’t know who you’re thinking of. You’re right. She sure is. My You’re right. She is alive. My bad. I thought uh that she recently passed. That Golden Girl died a couple years ago. Everybody was bummed out about Betty White. Betty White. Yeah, maybe that’s why. Uh, call Ernie Johnson. We want to apologize for saying that Dolly Parton’s dead. Ernie’s gonna have Scotty, you’re you’re our Ernie. Uh, no. Because All right. Can we just do Can we just get this out of the way right now? Yeah. Lloyd, can we get a ruling on this? Here’s the I cannot I I’m sure Lloyd edited this audio. There is no editing. I made sure and actually had Christian pull this real quick so I wouldn’t even have any editing capabilities. I had no part of it. I just had him pull the audio. All right, let me hear what you did to Bowler. Uh, how you holding up without uh your your co-pilot, man? We’re doing good. And and you know, look, those are big size 15s we have to fill. And so that’s why Lloyd does me a favor and just books anybody and everybody. So he’s like, we know you can’t handle it by yourself. And I’m like, you’re right, Lloyd. And then we’re like, “All right, so let’s let’s bring in the cavalry.” And by the way, Bowler, you are not anybody or everybody. You you Friday. No, this is your Friday stuff. I’m glad. Yeah, I like I like coming in on the Friday. Lloyd was the accelerant. Yes, Lloyd was the accelerant. Thank you. Okay, fine. I’ll take that. I I I I just I didn’t want bowler filling that way. So, I I maybe I should have just let it be. That’s my fault. Lloyd threw fuel on it. I think it would have because you were like, “Hey, look, it you know it we got to get the most prominent of Yes. Well, he didn’t say. He just said whoever would like to hop on air with us. That’s not what I said. I said I said Lloyd. And by the way, I was giving you a compliment, too, Lloyd. I was like, Lloyd does a great job. Going out of his way. There’s no camera right there. What did you just do? Uh, he did not do There’s not a camera, but I can tell you did something. I did not. I don’t know what you’re talking about. Did something. What did you do? There was a mosquito on his face, and he was shaking the mosquito. the fly off. There was a fly buzzing around his he was shaking the fly off his face. Okay, Lloyd. And his mic just happened to wake up like Mike Pence in a debate. You got that fly. I respect your friendship and your leadership, my friend. That’s another story I have to tell you later. Oh boy. Is everything okay? Yeah, we’re good. Everything’s great. Uh before we jump into our starter, did you guys go over the 2025? I was waiting for you on that one. PGA Championship major pain in the butt results cuz once again I was one golfer away from winning it and I had a golfer screw me over. But did you guys go over the No, I did not go over for you. Oh, I think you might find this to your surprise. Oh, I was the only person that had all three golfers make the cut. I knew that. But all three of my golfers sucked. Lloyd had the winner, so he gets an extra minus three. So Sheffller actually got him minus4, but Justin Thomas and Shane Lowren missed the cut. JT and Beefs. So he went plus 13 on both those. You had Bryson Desau at six under. Yeah. John Rom. John Rom at four under. Yeah. And Jordan Speed that didn’t make the cut at plus 13. You went plus three. I went plus six. Lloyd went plus 14. So you did win the PGA. Oh, I did. I won the thing. You won it. You won it by a grand total of three strokes. Well, I’ll be darn. That puts the score H 15, Scotty 12, Lloyd seven. You’re making up some Wow. real ground on your with your golf picks, buddy. It really came down to Bryson. Yes. The Beefs smacking that ball as hard as he possibly could. Although Although he needs a new golf ball apparently. We’ll talk about that a little bit later on. He’s blaming his golf balls. Is he really? Yeah. That guy can never He can never just let good enough be good enough. No. I I will never take another flyer on another beef a member of the Beef’s connection. Yeah. Larry got you. Never. Yeah, eat more beefs. I already got you. All right, let’s get to it. Starting lineup, Hansen Scotty, 975, the KSL Sports Zone. This is Hansen Scotty G. Let’s go. The lineup is set and it’s time to kick off the show with the biggest topic of the day. This is the starting lineup on 975, the KSL Sports Song. It is your starting lineup right here on 975 the KSL Sports Zone. Hans Olsson, Scott Gerard. Hope you’re having a great uh what is it? Tuesday today. Uh all right, Hans, a lot of rumors out there in regards to the Utah Jazz. Uh, one in particular have the Jazz snagging the number three pick from Philadelphia in exchange for Larry Market. And Colin Ston might be involved in the trade, but the Jazz would also have to take on the monstrous bad contract of one Paul George. Oh, yeah. Paul George is still owed about 150 million, maybe closer to about $160 million. three years left on his contract. Now, that third year is a player option, but given where Paul George is at in his career, I think he’s probably going to pick up that third year on his option. So, would you Now, early reports had the Jazz in a pick swap and so they would move to three. Philadelphia would then picking up would pick up five. In no way, shape or form would I do make that trade. But if you took on the bad contract of Paul George for three years, would you uh would you give up Lari Markin and maybe Colin Ston to pick up the number three and number five overall picks? Well, I think that it’s pretty clear at this point after missing out in the draft lottery and needing to protect that top eight protection and making sure that it doesn’t convey. This is the final year of that and that gets eliminated. I think that it’s very clear that you continue in tank mode and complete rebuild mode. Yes. And there’s no reason to keep Larry Markin and on this roster and continue to bench him and hide him and pay fines because you’re not playing him, which they did. Was it just once that they did that? Yeah, just one time. just one time that they paid the fine by not paying playing Larry Markin. I I I don’t hate it at this point. That’s what you got to do. It’d be a massive salary dump. I think everybody would understand why you’re doing it. Um my one concern about that is what type of participation are you going to get from Paul George? because he is going to be around the youngest and most impressionable minds. So, if I could bring in a Paul George that teaches my young guys how to be the consmate professional and the ultimate pro and I can bring in a Paul George that is on time, that is attentive, that is non-combative, that will even conform and reform his game to the askings and and desires of Will Hardy. and and this Jazz front office, then I might consider it. If I feel like he could impart some of his wisdom and years of play and great knowledge, but if I feel like he is a bad seed, if I feel like he will be a bad example, I’ve got too much youth, too many impressionable minds, too much to risk to to let him come in and be a part of that. But like you said, that’s that’s just a small part of what the potential is. I just don’t know how much you want him to be around. Yeah. And that’s uh he’s got you’re in kind of a weird spot with him because there’s too much time for him just to pay him not to be around. Yeah. Can’t The buyout really isn’t Am I wrong in that? No, no, no. The buyout really isn’t a No, no. There’s There’s really You’re unable to uh make anything happen there. and uh and and there’s still too much time to be able to trade it off to somebody else either. Nobody’s going to want that as c as part of a salary dump. So, you’re kind of in a no man’s land with Paul George. And I’ve heard good things about Paul George. I’ve heard not so good things about Paul George. Uh I don’t know where he’s at mentally or where his ambition level is. Does he want to be a mentor or does he just want to go through the motions, get his paycheck, and do the least amount of work possible and uh and not be bothered? Well, I think that that’s the one thing that I could I don’t mind this. I I don’t mind it because we just we ultimately know where the Jazz are at. I do have a concern because I I do think that we may be on the edge of the golden turn for the San Antonio Spurs and or or at least some other dynasty. I I know everybody’s caught up in this. Everybody’s got a shot in the NBA right now because we’re seven consecutive different champions and there’s not a real dynasty out there. I do think that we’re on the edge of that golden age of somebody rising. Whoever maybe grabs Giannis and sticks him with Wimi or how however that forms in San Antonio. My guess is it’s going to be San Antonio. Uh I would agree with that because I’m that level of belief of Victor Wimbeyama and his future in this league. But, um, I do think that you’re you’re gonna miss out on that. I I think that we’re going to end up seeing a dynasty run for a bit from another team. Outside of that, if you see the Paul George move made, I think it’s an indicator that it’s another, as David Lock mentioned, three years. Uh, I don’t mess around if it’s a pick swap with three and five and Philly just moves down to five. No, absolutely not. But if you can secure number three and number five, I take a long hard look at it. I would agree with that. Hans and Scotty, this is 975 the KSL Sports Zone. Cougars and Aggies, we’ve got you covered. This is Hance Olsson and Scotty G on 975, the Sports Zone. Hans Olsson, Scott Gerard, 975, the KSL Sports Zone. Hey, you know what? It may be May, but we’re always talking football. Joining us now, Kenan WAC from Inside Texas, kind enough to join us. We talk a little football. We can also talk a little basketball. In fact, let’s talk with Trey about Trey Johnson right out of the gate. A possibility as being a member of the Utah Jazz. And Kenan, the more I watch that guy on film, the more I really like him. Yeah, man. Trey is a really fun player. First of all, thanks for having me on, guys. Really appreciate it. But, um, man, I I’ve been covering watching Texas basketball for a long time and covering it for a while as well. And I mean, Trey is the best scorer they’ve had since the great Kevin Durant. I mean, it really is not particularly close. There’s been guys here and there who have been able to fill it up, but I mean, what Trey is able to do as a shot maker, a three-level scorer. I mean, statistical profile kind of compares him to a guy like Allen Houston from the Knicks in the 90s. That’s he’s got drawn comparisons to Bradley Beal, Tyler Hero, although he’s a better scorer in the post than Tyler Hero. So, yeah, man. Trey is a really fun player and a really really effective offensive piece. What’s kind of the height of where you’ve heard him going in the draft and what’s the bottom that you could potentially see him going in the draft? Yeah, so I’ve seen him as high as third even. I mean, I know Philly has a lot of backcourt pieces, but Trey is big enough to play the wing spot. I believe maybe some sort of Paul George replacement. I think the lowest he would go would be six to Washington. I really don’t see him falling past six. Uh Washington’s offense has struggled really badly this year. They were really inefficient and Trey would would raise this the floor and possibly the ceiling of that offense very quickly. So I think he goes in the 3 to six range. But man, I’m hearing a lot of buzz about him to Utah. So, you know, there’s when we get into picks and and draft projections, we talk about guys not in terms of what they do well, but what they struggle with. And maybe that’s unfortunate on our part, but I guess the question is what do you think is the elements of game of his game that have to improve going to the NBA? Sure. Yeah. So, I kind of wrote down a few notes and the the two things he’s not going to provide at least immediately are he’s not a great defender yet. He has the physical tools to be an eventual point of attack defender, right? He’s 6’5 without shoes on. He’s got a 610 wingspan. He’s got he had really good lane agility drill. I think he was the best at that in the combine. But I think part of the reason he wasn’t an elite defender is because he had to expend so much energy on the offensive end getting to his spots and trying to score for an offense that really didn’t help him out a lot. So he had better luck defensively when he was playing at Link Prep in Missouri. He was a better defender there and uh he just expended less energy there because he had Leberon Clown to play off of. So there’s that. And then he’s not really a lead guard. Like he’s not he’s not going to be your lead initiator on offense. He did do some things that were impressive, you know, passing out of double teams when he was trapped, specifically the Arkansas game. If if anybody wants to get excited about him as a possible Jazz player, watch his his game against Arkansas where he scored 39 points. But uh he’s not going to be a lead guard at this level. But again, I like Isaiah Collier and I I kind of like some of the back p backcourt pieces Utah has. So, I don’t know that he would need to do that necessarily. What kind of guy is he? Because we’ve seen a lot of different players come through this Utah Jazz organization and and eventually they just run out of patience with it or they want out because they’re looking for big markets or does Trey Johnson seem like he’d be a fit for a smaller market team like this? I think I think so because the thing with Trey is he’s more than anything he’s competitive to the point where he wants to win no matter where he is. Now I’ve covered this Texas team all year and they were not great. They were they did not have a great season. You know they lose in the first four to Xavier. Uh and and Trey is the best player on the floor every night. Pretty much every game they played he was the best player on the floor. That includes games against Kentucky, against Arkansas, against Alabama, right? like he was the best player on the floor and I understand the maybe hesitancy of oh this guy wants to be a big star but I think more than wanting to be a big star I think he just wants to compete at a high level and I think what that could bring to the organization for the Jazz specifically is just a higher level of of internal development I think he can drive some of that because he as a freshman at Texas was kind of the leader of the team a team full of veterans a lot of guys in their fourth and fifth years in college and he was the guy who took the mantle as the leader of the team. So, I think that’s what he brings as well is that leadership quality that maybe a younger team like Utah, it could help with that. Was the measurables at the combine a little bit of a surprise? Granted that I think, you know, and I know everybody nobody plays in barefoot, you know, plays barefoot, but he was like 6’4 and 3/4 barefoot. Did you anticipate him being a little bigger than that? I think what’s more important than his height is his wingspan, which is 610. So, I think like yeah, he’s he’s about 6’5 and you know, give or take an inch with the shoes or whatever, but I think the wingspan makes him more valuable maybe than the height does. Um, he’s wiry, but he is pretty strong. You know, he’s 190, but he’s he’s a guy that can put on some muscle to his frame, I think. and uh 38 inch vertical is pretty good. But I mean the lane agility drill and the shooting drills if you’re looking at combine stuff. I mean he was pretty pretty impressive combine outside of not being maybe 68 or 69 or some of the some of the wings we’re seeing in the draft right now. But you know I think he’s more of a shooting guard prospect but that can play the wing. So I think the wingspan is is a little more important maybe than the height in this instance. What his dad is Richard Johnson. Is that right? Baylor player. Yes. Um, so he was he he was raised then by because Richard was a a coach, wasn’t he? Yeah, I don’t believe he he played for Lake Highlands in Dallas before he went to Link Prep, though. Okay. So, he Yeah, he was at Lake Highlands. And real real interesting piece of trivia is he played against Kase Wallace uh when he was when Kase was a senior at Richardson. Trey was a sophomore at Lake Highlands. He scored 39 points against a senior Kase Wallace. So, there’s an indication of the kind of player he can be. Um, overall, when you look at his development in that one year at Texas, uh, I keep hearing and I talked to a scout the other day that said that I he said, I look, I don’t know if we’re talking about a Hall of Famer. I don’t know what we’re talking about in terms of Trey Johnson, but I do feel comfortable in saying that he’s a 20 to 25 point a night guy eventually in the NBA. Would you agree with that? I would just because of the myriad of ways in which he can score, right? He’s not a one-trick pony. He’s a guy that, you know, he can score out of dribble handoffs. He can score off the catch and shoot. He can be a scorer out of the pick and roll. Uh, and he’s just a guy that can make contested shots, come off screens and hit shots. He’s just a real really impress. I mean, he shot 40% from three on a team that had very little offball movement where he was required to do a lot. And I think that that’s an indication of what he’s capable of at the next level. So, what’s this old um name image and like this era been for you covering Texas basketball and watching the Longhorns try to maneuver and manipulate a very expensive market? Are they well in the money game and they’re ready to pay these players and be competitive in in their new league? Yeah, I believe so. I mean, they’re not on the uh BYU level necessarily, let’s say that. But, uh after Mr. Devansa. But yeah, I think you know this first year is going to be interesting. Sean Miller’s bringing in a lot of guys that are two-year guys, right? They’re guys with eligibility that he’s trying to create some roster continuity and then I think he’s swinging big at the 26 class. He’s offering a lot of five stars and stuff like that. So yeah, I mean obviously football is king in Texas, you know, it’s just how it is. You look at some of the the names on this current football roster and you’ll understand why. But um yeah, I think that the further they move into SEC play, the more backing they’re going to get. And if you saw Shawn Miller’s contract, that’s kind of an indication that they’re very much into the basketball program. Uh what are your early impressions? You know, we we’ve seen Shawn Miller have a lot of success at Xavier and then uh and then at Arizona, then he goes back to Xavier. What are what are fans expectations of him now that he’s at Texas? Yeah, I mean with the money they just dedicated to his contract, which he’s making twice what Rodney Terry was making, right? He’s making about 5.8 a year. That that contract information became public about a month ago. And you know, I think the most exciting thing for fans at this point is they want to see some offball movement. You know, they want to see a pro style offense that emphasizes using ball screens and multiple actions per possession. And they just didn’t see a lot of that with the last few coaches they’ve had. There’s it’s kind of stagnant offense. That was the big problem with Rodney Terry was they weren’t really running these interesting actions. It was kind of split screens and then you just kind of figure it out. And Shawn Miller seems to have a much more in-depth intricate plan on the offensive end. I think that’s what people are most excited for. So, how have you felt like things have worked out for Kai Jones? Well, I mean, honestly, like better than I kind of thought. Like, you know, he’s been bounced around the league. He had a little stint with the Mavericks. I mean, it’s been uh it’s been interesting to see his career kind of unfold. Um, but yeah, I mean, he was a guy that was was a bit of a one-trick pony at Texas, right? He was kind of just a lob thread rim runner type. And Texas has had a lot of those kind of guys over the last few years, you know, but some of them have developed better than others. You have guys like Miles Turner who’s in the Eastern Conference Finals and then you have guys like Mo Bomba who kind of blamed out. So, it’s a real luck of the draw with those rim runner types. You have to hope they develop some sort of perimeter skill of some kind. And if they don’t, it’s really hard for them to survive in the league. Well, hey, we certainly appreciate your time. Thanks for hanging out with us and look forward to catching up with you again down the line hopefully uh when the Jazz uh maybe make that selection at five with with Trey being the newest member. I would love that, guys. I really appreciate you all having me on. There you go. Keenan Wulmarmac inside Texas writer also uh and breaking down Trey Johnson as he covered that Texas basketball team all season long. Um I don’t hate that pick. There’s there’s some out there that believe that Trey Johnson will not be available for the Jazz at five. Uh that that he will sneak in and be either number three or number four. So, who knows at this point? He would be the Utah Jazz second selection of a Texas Longhorn player. Can you CJ Miles? Actually, no. CJ went from high school. CJ committed to Texas but didn’t play. Uh, Texas, Texas. Texas. Got to go to 1985. Oh, okay. Then I’m I’m Mike Whacker. I don’t know anything about him really. Yeah, but that’s uh from what I understand, that’s the only Texas player the Utah Jazz have ever drafted. Wow. Huh. I I don’t know anything about him. Was that a first round pick or It was a first round pick. Mike Whacker. And I just don’t I’d like to give you some back. Have you ever even heard that? I I I No, I’d like to say Oh, yeah. I Yeah. while I stall and look at his stats on uh Mike Whacker. Uh let me let me pull up his basketball reference page. 69, 225 pound player. Jazz took him uh yeah, Jazz drafted him. Let’s see. And I don’t think he ever played for the Jazz. He did not ever play for the the Jazz. Yeah, but that’s the only Texas player the Jazz have ever that from this just a quick research look. He did average uh 16 points, eight rebounds, and an assist a game his last year at Texas. So, who’s uh who are some of the better players? Is Jared Allen was he from Jared Allen? Was he from Texas? Uh I can’t remember. Obviously Kevin Durant’s the big one. Kevin Durant’s the biggest one. Yeah. Uh that goes back to 2007. Yep. Yep. Uh, he Jared Allen, Texas player. They’ve had a couple of good ones come through. Oh, you know what was crazy about that interview? Yes. So, I asked him, “Okay, so the Longhorns, how engaged are they in in this NIL thing?” And he said, “Well, we’re not BYU.” How about that? a guy who covers covers the University of Texas, the Longhorns, who they and Ohio State for so many years have been considered uh the the richest institutions in the country, the biggest spenders, the biggest spenders. Uh I remember they and there was a there was kind of an arms race between Texas and Ohio State as to who had the biggest athletic director budget for so many years. and he said, “Well, yeah, we’re spending money. We’re not on BYU’s level, but they’re spending money.” In a million years, would you ever thought you’d hear a Longhorns expert slashanalyst slashinssider slashbeat rider who’s been around for a long time, oh yeah, say that they’re not on BYU’s level. And then he referenced Dansa, but it’s not just Dansa. It’s not there’s a lot of talent and there’s a lot of stir and to hear him say, “Well, yeah, we’re spending, but we’re not on BYU’s level.” To hear a Longhorn reporter say that, what a world we’re living in. You ready for Western Conference Finals to tip off tonight? Yeah. Timberwolves and Thunder. Uh yeah, let’s go. How do you think this thing plays out? Uh I think Oklahoma City gets game one, but I do think Minnesota is going to get out of there with a split. Oh, so what do you mean? Minnesota gets out there with a like I think I think they’re going to win one of the two games. Oh. Oh. Gets out. Okay. Gets out of OKC with the split. Okay. So So it could be they could swip they could they could flop home court. Yeah. I I think it that’s going to happen because I think this series is going seven. Um I hope it goes seven. You know, this comes down to the battle of the next big star. You know, you you’ve got Anthony Edwards taking on Shay Gilg and this comes down to the battle of the next big star in the West. Yep. 100%. I think the guy that comes out of this can put the crown on whether he has the MVP or not. I think that I think the guy that comes out of the series is the one that’s the actual MVP. If if Anthony Edwards is able to overcome OKC and Shay Gilis Alexander, I don’t care who won the MVP. Anthony Edwards is your MVP. Can you uh can you just give me the bet then? I’d be willing to negotiate it. You get your attorneys. I’ll get mine. We’ll get my people talking to your people. We’ll figure it out. And we’ll we’ll figure this out through the the courts. Uh what you may have missed, this news broke, by the way, near the end of the show yesterday, but I wanted to get your thoughts on it. Uh San Francisco locked up uh Brock Party on a massive contract. George KD as well, and now once again, Fred Warner is the highest paid linebacker in the NFL. Signed a three-year 63 million extension. Uh 56 of that 63 is guaranteed. Okay. Well, you got to ask yourself, you’re going to pay that kind of money. What you’re still believing is that you’ve got a contender. Yeah. Is this still a contender? I don’t think so. But I don’t either, but uh the Brock Pery contract I think was way way too much. How many years did that 5year 265 181 of that guaranteed? No. 181 guaranteed million dollars to Brock Pury. I I guess when you look around you’re like what do we got 18 quarterbacks in the Well, yeah, that’s the question, you know, and that’s I hate saying that, but you got to give the money to somebody, right? And he’s your best player available. Well, he’s he’s better than anything Chicago’s had in the last 10 years. It’s really tough to come by a quarterback in the NFL. Yeah. And at least he’s got some postseason experience and postseason success, but I still look at the 49ers. I say that they’re just not a contender. Well, no. And Christian McCaffrey will play two games and then get injured for eight. That’s your problem. Yeah. He’s unreliable. So, you traded Debo? Debo’s gone. But but the other thing is what are you gonna do? Not pay Fred Warner? Yeah. No. Not pay KD? You know what surprised me and shame on me for thinking he was older than he was? Fred is only in his seventh year in the NFL. Like for some reason I thought he’d been around. Maybe because I kind of mix him up with Bobby Wagner a little bit. He just finished his seventh year. Just finished his seventh year going into eighth. Wow. Time does go fast. But yeah, it does feel like he would be like, it feels like he should be mid-30s. Yeah. And kind of in a final contract situation, but no, he’s still, you know, he might be on the tail end of the prime, but still in the prime of his career. Uh, other thing I wanted to mention really quick and what you may have missed, the East Finals start tonight in NHL, Florida and Carolina. The Panthers and the Hurricanes. Now, can we cheer for somebody other than Florida? Cuz I’m cheering for Carolina. Are you? Yeah, I’m still going Florida here. I They’re They’re still the showpiece to me. Well, I mean, I think they’re the showpiece for sure. I just uh I don’t know, man. It’s like cheering for the house in Vegas. They’re just better than everybody right now. This thing starts in Raleigh, North Carolina. And Carolina is minus 125 in game one in Raleigh. Yeah. Give me the hurricane. You got the hurricane. Yeah. This is not an Avatar bet, by the way. I think Florida switches it right out of the gates now. Florida’s coming out of a an emotional tough fought game seven. They’re exhausted. They had one g one day of rest and they are back at it. So maybe maybe Carolina still is a game one. All I know is that man when Florida needed to flex did they flex. They flexed. That second period was they just broke Toronto’s will to live there in that second period. That second period was like hey everybody. And it was what first goal came 16 minutes left or so 15 something left in the second and they didn’t look back. Nope. It was done. stomped them to dust within five minutes of that game. Stomped them to dust. And I can just see it. Florida’s going to come out tonight. By the way, this is a six o’clock puck drop. Florida’s going to come out tonight against the Hurricanes and they’re going to do what they do in every game one. They’re going to try to impose their will. And if Carolina can’t match it, doesn’t matter if it goes to game seven, Florida come out of it winning. Carolina’s got to match it and go above it. Toronto tried, they couldn’t. Carolina’s got to do it if they want to come out of this series.
