Timeline of How the Pistons Went from WORST TEAM to PLAYOFF CONTENTION | Rebuild

Brunson will fire and that’s it. The Pistons end the longest losing streak in NBA playoff history. They win their first postseason game since 2008. I would think Reggie Jackson and Drummond have value in the market. Obviously, we can’t really win the East. We know that we can compete for the East and get to the playoffs, but then what happens? We’re not bad enough to get a high lottery pick. And if we do, we need to be better in the draft at picking the right players. Dude has been playing in NBA purgatory for the last seven years since he got into the league. Detroit, the best they finished in his tenure is eighth in the East. That’s the best. And then you’re going to trade the man who clearly isn’t the problem without a heads up. Blake Griffin is preparing for the next time he plays a game, whenever that may be, said he’s feeling good, not declining, and this is not his last contract in the NBA. But as the Pistons finally admit they are entering a full-on rebuild, Griffin said his place with the franchise’s future is up to management. I couldn’t be happier about being able to join the Piston family and lead the charge to continuously trying to uh restore the Pistons um back to consistent winning. With the seventh pick in the 2020 NBA draft, the Detroit Pistons select Killian Hayes from Lakeland, Florida. Stewart is more of a big bruiser type guy. He’s a below the rim player. This kid went definitely higher than I expected him. I had him late in the first round, even low in the second round. It’s coming into a tough situation, but at the same time, it’s a completely different team. So, I mean, that’s a challenge. The challenge is to bring this organization or help bring this organization back into um a winning organization. So, uh that’s a challenge for me. I was struggling first part. I was still trying to figure things out. Killian is hurt. I’ve never been hurtful a long time before, so that was definitely a new experience. I was scared at first, but players, they all supported me, so they helped me go through it. The Pistons on this trip are really struggling to score. 96 points per game. We know that they can’t shoot. They’re dead last in field goal percentage, 27th and threes. Go ahead and shoot. We’re not going to give you any three-pointers. Sixtime NBA All-Star Blake Griffin has come to terms on a free agent deal with the Brooklyn Nets. The agreement is reportedly for the remainder of this season. The deal comes just hours after Griffin cleared waiverss. The former Piston was released by Detroit earlier this week. Perhaps they aren’t as bad or they weren’t as bad as that record would suggest. Obviously, there was some pretty aggressive tanking down the stretch there as well, but in terms of the level of play and the quality of roster, they weren’t quite that bad. The Pistons had a 14% chance of getting the top pick and they did just that. Coming away with the number one pick overall. Great news for a franchise who desperately needs a generational talent with scoring ability. With the first pick in the 2021 NBA draft, the Detroit Pistons select Cade Cunningham from Oklahoma State University. being around with the Pistons organization so far. Tried to help make that transition smoother for me. So, I’ve been liking it. Detroit’s been good for me and, you know, just being able to lock in on basketball now and and be with the team, getting workouts. It’s been a lot of fun. The number one overall pick, good to go after returning from an ankle injury. So, get ready to see a lot more of the rookie. He has played in two games so far. The results of course lacking fireworks, but Casey pointing out that’s part of the process. Then he said he doesn’t like to use that word process. their number one guy, Jeremy Grant. Uh-oh. Uh-oh. Stewart and LeBron. Stewart is hot and everybody’s coming out now. This is ridiculous. Grant has been out for over a month with a thumb injury and yet his name consistently pops up in trade reports. The Pistons in the fall offered the Sixers Grant, Sadiq Bay, Kelly Olen for Ben Simmons. But that is where a lot of Grant trade rumors stem from. Marvin Baggley Jr. going to the Pistons. I think the Pistons are figuring out that uh this kid has a tremendous amount of potential. He just needs to hit the reset button. I feel like I’m the best rookie this year. Situation for situation, I feel like I made my case strong and every night I went out and competed. Try to be the best me. That’s all I can ask for myself. So, whatever the happens with the award happens, I’m ready for next year and what I can do next year. With the fifth pick in the 2022 NBA draft, the Detroit Pistons select Jaden Ivy from Purdue University. Pistons GM Troy Weaver always has the itch to trade. He said as much this week. He didn’t wait until draft night to make a deal to get rid of Jeremy Grant. The Pistons are trading him to the Trailblazers for a 2025 first round pick. Being in this type of organization who’s going to help me develop and grow. I feel like I’m excited. Even coming in with a a player like Jaden, I feel like it would even help my game with the talents that he has. So, I feel like I’m in a great spot for me and my future to be a Piston and to be here with this organization and everything that I’ve been through just growing up. I always love Detroit. I want to be Piston for life, that’s for sure. It runs deep. And just every single day rep the city well just that pride on my back. It’s tough, man. We don’t like we don’t like to lose at all. Like we were controlling the game most of the game. We had a key couple key defensive lapses and then we couldn’t convert on the other end. So, it’s a credit to them, but you know, like you said, it’s tough. It’s tough not to win that. Kate Cunningham plans to have season ending surgery on his left shin. Cunningham has been out since November 9th. The decision for a season ending procedure will allow full recovery by training camp of next year. The Pistons are acquiring James Wiseman from the Warriors in exchange for Sadi Bay. It has Bay Landing in Atlanta with the Hawks. Wiseman. He’s the former number two overall pick in that draft. The same draft that Bay was drafted in. Continue to be patient like we are. The pieces are here. We got young talent. We got veterans. We just need to get healthy and be cohesive. We’re going to get there. And big part of that is getting K back healthy and being able to add this summer. But we’re coming and we’re going to get there. I feel most bad for K that he was unable to take a step forward. There is a silver lining in all of this. They have a better chance to have the worst record in the league and get Victor Wimbeyama. It also gives them a chance to put the ball in Jaden Ivy’s hands. They found out their lottery hopes and dreams were crushed. The fifth pick will be made by the Detroit Pistons. Fifth, the worst possible outcome. Ben Wallace in Chicago stunned and bummed. The Pistons were in hot pursuit of Monty Williams. Tonight, they got their man. Their deal is worth 78.5 million or 13 million per year. Owner Tom Goris played a huge role in the pursuit of Monty Williams. With the fifth pick in the 2023 NBA draft, the Detroit Pictton Pistons select Assar Thompson from Oakland, California in overtime. you know, I work on my whole game. I feel like I I have a lot of different, you know, parts to my game that, you know, help us play winning basketball and um, you know, I just want to showcase those best I can. Yeah, I feel great and I’m feel 100%. I think this group struggles with adversity. The countenance, the spirit of the team start to diminish. But for me, the message is not going to change. You know, we’re going to continue to fight, continue to compete. We got to fight. We got to hang in there. The compete level has to be up if we want to give ourselves a shot. Playing together, hopping the ball around, all those are are big things. Just being connected defensively, competing, talking, staying connected is who we are. And we give ourselves play good basketball when we do that. I feel, you know, very confident in the paint, you know, as I’m trying to expand my game. I’m still learning like we had to go through a lot uh this morning and yesterday, but I’m still learning how to screen roll. And you know, you look at some of the things that will prove to be a bit of a silver lining for the Pistons. 9.7 left. Oh boy. Here we go. Sell the team. They’re saying the unknown comic. No. Yeah, remember him. Breaking news. The Pistons are still putrid. 26 straight losses. They lose 12615 on the road at Brooklyn. They were outscored 6242 in the paint. Well, the nightmare continues for Pistons fans. The team officially set a new NBA record tonight for the longest single season losing streak. And this comes after the Pistons started the season 2 and one. We have a good core. We have a good foundation. We have these all these young players. And we have flexibility. So, we have to not panic and do the right thing, execute, and have urgency. What if I told you the Detroit Pistons had a 21point lead on the road in Boston and still lost? Why would you believe me? Because the Pistons are putrid. They matched the NBA record, 28 straight losses. It wasn’t relief. It was just like, “Thank God.” You know, finally guys were screaming. I was almost in tears. I’m just so happy for our guys. I’m happy for everybody in the locker room. It is easy to look smart when you’re stripping a team down, but now Troy Weaver’s challenge to build a team back up looks more and more difficult. Less than four seasons later, Weaver waved Hayes in one of the many moves again as a seller at the trade deadline. This is so bad that the Wall Street Journal had that as a headline. Are the Detroit Pistons the worst team in NBA history? They haven’t won a game. Seven weeks, damn near to be exact. Congratulations to the Detroit Pistons. You’re bad, but you’re not good enough to be bad enough to win the number one overall pick. But they have 14 wins and then you don’t have the number one overall pick. Yet, you’re picking number five here. And when we win, we’re going to feel joy. I want everybody in this building when we lose to feel pain. I want the players to have all the confidence in me, and they’re the ones that are going to get the credit here. Our goal is to compete night in night out. put a product on the floor in a team the city is proud of. With the fifth pick in the 2024 NBA draft, the Detroit Pistons select Ron Holland II from Dallas, Texas and the NBA GLeague team ignite. The Detroit Pistons are hiring JB Bickerstaff as their next head coach. Tan Langden, the new president with the Pistons, when they dismissed Monty Williams, JB Bickerstaff was the first coach they brought in. Tim Hardaway is on his way to the Pistons after a trade with the Mavericks. The Pistons are planning to take on contracts from other teams this off seasonason. They have cap space and they want to use it to acquire draft picks by taking on other teams contracts. Tobias Harris is a legend. He’s the MVP of the summer for getting the bag in Detroit. Another what 26 27 M a year with no pressure. Tobias Harris is a legend at the Bay. That’s more important to me. He got the best career ever. This is a team. This is a franchise that has been so low and so bad for so damn long. The NBA and sports is better off when Detroit is relevant because we see how passionate that fan base is. Let’s make the Pistons a good team. Let’s get them back into the spotlight. Over to Malik Beasley. Beasley to Ivy for the pump. He got Yes, he did. Yes, he did. Oh, man. He got fouled on a three. On a threemate. Blocked down from behind inadvertently by Cole Anthony, but Jaden Ivy’s in a lot of pain. He is not getting up either. He is in anguish on that floor. Jay Ivy Pistons are going to go check him out. It says here he’s a free agent at the end of the year. Exactly why I’m okay with this is I would never want him longterm. He’s a pain in the ass, but he can play and I think in the role that they need him. It’ll take a little bit of pressure off Cade. Certainly replaces the Ivy. It’s a great feeling. It’s hard to put words on it. Uh been a lot of work, a lot of wins, losses, lessons, all that stuff, man, that’s led up to this point. So, I’m just thankful for the moment. Um thankful for my team, my coaches. This is a very hard team to play against. They rough you up on the interior. They have a lot of size. This team is sixth place with eyes on fourth. One year ago today, February 24, they were 9 and 49. Look at them now. This team just tripled its win total from last season. The first team in NBA history to do it to a great organization. Detroit, the fans, you know, they supported all year. They’ve been here. Last year was a tough year, but everybody’s sticking to it. What a turnaround. The 117 105 the final from 14 wins a year ago to the playoffs this year. And we’ve said it a million times, no one saw this coming, but now that it’s here and now that it’s happened, Pistons deserve a moment to enjoy it. I want to be the best player in the world. That’s every day. You know what I’m saying? That’s what my phone tells me every day. That’s the only thing I’m striving for. And having the best team in the world, you know? I don’t think there’s too many players that you could argue above me. Just how long was it ago that the Pistons last won a playoff game? Kate Cunningham, he was 6 years old. Full wins Lollipop. That was the top song. The iPhone was under a year old and LeBron was 249th on the alltime scoring list. Kade, you guys won 14 games last year and here you are in a competitive first round series. We prove to ourselves that what we have in the room works, can be very successful in the NBA. When they come play Detroit, it’s going to be a dog fight. Even with their season coming to an end, this was the type of season that some say reignited the fan base of the Detroit Pistons. And with a relatively young team, coaches and players feel the future is bright for Detroit basketball.

The Detroit Pistons hit rock bottom with the longest single-season losing streak in NBA history. Just a year later, they shocked the league by tripling their win total and clinching a playoff spot. Led by rising star Cade Cunningham and a revamped young core, the Pistons turned failure into fuel—marking one of the most dramatic turnarounds in recent NBA memory.

  1. I hope to see the Pistons get more success in future seasons as a Grizzlies fan, and as a NY Giants fan (different sport i know), this shows that THERE CAN BE an end to being a meme in the league.

  2. You do such an excellent job summarizing several years of key moves, drafts, season results and playoffs, Jay. I always look forward to a new Jay Warvz video!!

  3. Let's just all be honest here if Monty Williams were white, he would NEVER got that job not to mention the LARGEST coach contract in the history

  4. Isn't that weird that as soon as they kicked Weaver out, they went from abysmal to a solid team?

  5. I never thought I'd say this so soon… but the Pistons are on right track

If they continue developing their project and improving as a team, we could see them contending a bit like the Pacers or the Knicks.

  6. i think if they could grab one more star like somehow acquire giannis as an example they would easily be a contender for a ring they would obviously have to give up a good amount for him but cade ausar are the only 2 maybe duren that would have to stay everyone else is movable

  7. I've always liked Cade, so glad he's had his breakout year and hopefully he'll keep on getting up there in the years to come

  8. Detroit turnaround is a bit similar to 1999 Richmond Oiler
From a dead last to a decent team
JB Bickerstaff is not Pistons legend and he doesn’t have a son to play with him
There was no blame game in Pistons changing room

  9. Seeing the team that is in bottom 5 in the NBA for multiple seasons and then improves to the Playoffs during a single season is always a pleasure

  10. Love the content bro. This is my go to channel when I want to eat and have a YouTube video 😂💯

  11. Winning 44 games after winning just 14 last year and win two Playoff games is simply incredible. The future is bright for this young club.

  12. Best turnover from 14-68 to 44-38 and a 6th seed, and somehow can force knicks in 6.

Credits to Langdon and Bickerstaff who give Pistons back on track

  13. Bickerstaff at least have a 4.5 year as head coach in Cavs, rebuilding Cavs and succeeding to Atkinson post lebron.

Bickerstaff have only one losing season (not counting 2019/20 season because it’s not a full season as HC)
