Hot Takes or Toast: Should the Utah Jazz trade Lauri Markkanen to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul…

We’re doing hot takes or toast right now. It’s a hot take for the Jazz to make a deal, is it not? You want them to stand pat. Well, there’s been rumors out there that Philadelphia, which has Embiid, which has Maxi, which has some other veteran guys, they’ve got the third pick, but they want to win and win now. So, they’re open to trading the third pick, but they want a veteran player to come in and to be able to hit the ground running. Jazz got plenty of them. All right, Jordan Clarkson, thanks for being here. Not for the third pick. John Collins. Not for the third pick. Colin Ston. Nah, no. Not for the third pick. Okay. Lowry, thank you for coming. Lowry marketing. And they want to get rid of Paul George’s salary. Who don’t? So third pick, you get the third pick, Jazz fans, and in return and Paul George, you give up Lowry Marketing. Do you make that deal? What do you say? Get on the line, do whatever you do to uh communicate with us. The hotline, what’s it called? Go to KSL Sports app and use the call-in features, right? call in feature down at the bottom of the app. You can record your takes and we can play them on air. Yeah. Or you can call in uh 575 zone. Yes. 663. Yeah. Would you make that deal? You give up Lowry Marketing. In return, you get Paul George and the third pick. Now, I was listening to some Phoenix talk radio yesterday when I was at the gym and they were talking about a similar deal for Kevin Durant. Right now, Kevin Durant is about eight years older than Lowry Markinon. Markin is 27. Katie’s 35. And they were saying, I don’t know about that. They felt like Paul George was done, that he’s had a ton of injuries and uh and they they even speculated that he’s lost his desire to compete at a high level. I don’t know about that. I’m just that’s just what they were talking about. Uh but do you need to even keep Paul George? Could you just wave him? Uh and the third pick. So then you’d have the third and the fifth pick. Yes or no? Jazz fans, how you hanging on? Where are you? This is your turn to tell me where you are. Yock, you were somewhere in the state the other day. I’m in uh uh Blanding. Blanding? I don’t even know where Blanding. You keep pick these obscure places. Blanding is about as far southeast as you can go in this state. Is it? Yeah. It’s like down in San Juan County. Oh. Um how Okay, I’ll give you a better one. I’m in a a fountain green. Fountain green. Yes. Where’s Fountain Green? Ogden Canyon area. Did you have to take Utah history or geography or school? Multiple times. I took it because you flunked it. No, I had to take it in junior high, high school, and I even took it during college. PK. Oh, wow. Well, you should have got an A by the third time around. Uh, I would hope so. Well, that’s just stupid. Have to look at the transcripts. I took uh had to take Arizona history and the guy who I took it from, his name’s Jerry Hec, and he did like the 24 second clock for the Suns. And I’m, you know, I’m getting up there. Not right quite ready to be put out to pasture, but I can’t deny it anymore. Although I look spelt and I still look I my age, my looks be bely my age. Let’s call it like it is. You can see see me on television. You can see me on the the app. Hey out there, how you doing? You can get on our app and there’s a camera pointed right at me. I just waved to you all. Blew you a kiss. And did you just see me blow your kiss, Jacqu? I can. Yeah, I’m monitoring all this. Yeah. Well, you have to because you never know what I’m going to do. That’s a very good point. And the guy guys, the teacher was Jerry Hec and he did like the 24 clock or something. He still does it for the Suns. He still does it. He’s got to be like 90 years old by now. Unless he was 21. Y’all had Al McCoy go till he was what 95ish or whatever he was. I think he was right around 90 91. Okay. But still, you the sons are are happy to help people hang around for But I mean, he had to have been at least 30. I thought he was older cuz when you’re when you’re 16 years old, 30 might as well be 50. Uh and so they had this he these goofy tests and one of the tests questions was what town could be you and your mother in Arizona because you had to learn all the towns and the counties. Any idea what the answer you and your mother? No clue. Extreme Southwest. The Padres’s used to train there. Yuma. Yuma. Okay, there you go. Okay. Yeah. Arizona Western they had down there. Pretty good athletic school. Uh, so you and your mother, I remember it. Yuma. That’s like the only one I got right. Uh, so anyway, would you make that trade, Jazz fans? How are you hanging on? Chris Roberts says, “Nope. Anyone but Lowry.” Anyone but Lowry. Okay. I’d give you a Walker Kesler. Would you make that deal? Nope. Paul George is always injured and a bit too old. Yeah. So, you you just uh you cut him. He he joins the list of Russell Westbrook twice, wasn’t it? Wasn’t Westbrook uh didn’t he get acquired twice? And he never was never spent a day here. Glenn, I know Glenn Rice did. Never spent a day here. There’s been some others. Well, Kendrick Perkins, Westbrook’s done it twice. He’s As I said, Westbrook twice. He’s done it twice. We also had um who else was I think there was one other player that has Oh, Dererick Rose. Dererick Rose. Yes. And yeah. Yeah. Famous Jazzman who never spent actual time at Yeah. I don’t I don’t know that Paul George suits up for you whatsoever. you’re looking to get the best players available and most draft experts will have Jeremy Woo who will join us uh ESPN draft analyst and writer at 9:00 9:05 uh saying that man there’s three really good players I think there could be more than that but they’re talking about so you get in the top three so you get the three in the fifth pick I think that helps you rebuild this Does Larry Markin help your rebuild? Are you just intent on keeping Larry Markin or do you want to trade him for a better deal? All right, let’s go to Mike. Well, then Mike is next. First, we’ll go to Ryan. If all we have to do to get the number three pick is give up Larry Markin and take back Paul George, am I going to do that? Yeah. Hell yeah. All right. I’m with Ryan on that because if you can keep the fifth pick, PK, right? You got the third and the fifth pick. Yeah, I’m all in. Go push push it through right now. And yes, Paul George, more than likely you buy him out or some at some level. Yeah, see you later. Who cares, right? Right. We had lock on was it two weeks ago and he was advocating for them to bring in Damen Lillard. Obviously Damian has the connection here. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Contract, but Dame ain’t going to play at least for another year it feels like. So you’re taking back salary. you need to get to a floor and whatnot. You can absorb it. I Yeah, I see. And you get the third and the fifth pick. I see very little downside. And marketing. Okay. And I I want to get Lome’s uh response when he gets here. Top of the hour. He’s supposed to be here. Markin’s going the opposite direction. His first year, they’re all fired up. He plays 66 games and and they give him the all-star thing. I mean, he had a nice season for sure. There’s no doubt. and and you know he was 25 and 25 and a half and 8.6 just looking at the raw stats two assists a game that 8.6 six would be the boards in 66 games. But then last year was 55 and his most recent year was 47. Now I know that he sat I get it and they had sat him on purpose but you look back in Chicago and Cleveland he’s not exactly Cal Ripken Iron Man over here. I mean he ain’t replacing letter Carrier with a number of consecutive games played. That’s for sure. All right, PK, my Utah native uh card has been revoked. What? Our good friend True Blue BYU 1984 says this. Dear Jacob Sea Hatch, Fountain Green is down in San Peak County in the middle of the state. Mountain Green is up by Ogden. Oh, you got your wrong. You have just failed geography. I wonder why you took it three times. Yeah, apparently. I ain’t heard of either place. All right. Um I’m in uh uh Moroni. Now where the heck’s Moroni? Down by Fountain Green in San Pee County cuz I’ve been there. They have a bunch big turkey farm. Oh, they do? Yeah. You ever heard Norbest? No, they do a bunch of turkey processing down there. Oh, yeah. Okay. I’ll learn eventually. I’m still trying to figure out where Third South is, man. I I haven’t caught on to all that stuff. I grew up and there was just streets. you and my wife. My wife is a California native and the grid system is the most foreign concept to her in her entire life cuz she grew up knowing just street names and then I’m over here like okay you want to go to 90th South and Third West and she’s like what in the you know what did you just talk about like what do you it’s like speaking a foreign language right I all these downtowns there the down the third west second west it’s just right over there I I don’t by the Delta Center just give me give me some landmark that I can figure it out. I haven’t figured out. I’ve been coming down this street now for years. I don’t even know what it is. That one 300 West. That’s that. Okay, there you go. Third West, ain’t it? I don’t know. It’s It’s I haven’t figured it out yet. Eventually, I will. Give me time. Uh I know in Phoenix you got Central Avenue, everything east is street, and everything west is drive. So, that’s uh one way to figure that out. I can figure that uh city out easier than I can here. So Markin marketin has had available in his eight seasons 656 games. He’s only played in 450 of them. So what are you really giving up? And he doesn’t fit the timeline. He’s a nice player. There’s no doubt about it. He’s a nice player. But does he really fit the timeline? Especially, and this is where my trust of team management comes in big time. If Jay-Z and Danny Ray say, “Yeah, man. That player at third, we really, really like that kid.” Whoever it may be, Ace Bailey, what whomever it might be, Trey Johnson, figure it out. Probably Ace. And if they if their people and those guys sign off on it, I sign off on it. That’s to me, A has proven he knows talent. You can say whatever you want about him, the trades, tearing it down, blah blah blah. But the guy knows talent and I think he has an ability to project talent, too. You can’t just Most folks who are in this can look at talent and see it. I always said that when I covered high schools, high school preps, and you know, you’d work your way up. Uh, and then when I was working for the watchdog, like in the playoffs, I I didn’t do high schools. Jay Drew did a phenomenal job he did, but I would help out on coverage. Tom Wharton just passed last week. Great human being. And he all my years at the Tribune. He’d always do preps and he had done it before. And uh, you know, a guy like him who did preps every year for like 40 years. You could go to a high school game, really like any any high school sport, and it would take you maybe about a half a quarter to figure out, okay, that kid, he’s really good. You know, I can remember I covered uh who what Dan Coat went to Northridge, didn’t he? And he went on to BYU, played in the NFL, and I think he’s coaching high school football now. And he is the new athletic director of the new Westfield High School up there. Okay, cool. Moved over from Farmington. And so they were playing at Weber State. I don’t remember who they were playing. Uh, and I didn’t know much about the preps. I didn’t know any schools that were good or whatever, but I they they signed me. I go up to Weieber, cover the game, and I see him just go down the field a few times. Okay. Wow, this kid’s really good. Played in the NFL, live over in the Brighton area. I went to see this kid, this little Polynesian kid whose feet were the most incredible feet I’d ever seen. He played in the NFL. His name was Reno Mah, right? Uh Sei Foku played in the NFL, a receiver. My uh neighbor kid had the bad luck of being the receiver on the other side of him. Never got any balls because it kept throwing it to Foko because in triple coverage, he’d still go up and catch it, right? made it to the NFL, went to Stanford and all that. So, it doesn’t take that much to see talent in the moment. You got to have the ability to project talent down the road. What’s he gonna be like three, four years? That’s where it gets pretty tricky and that’s where you have to be a specialist. That’s where the U of and Whittingham and Scally and those guys have really, really separated themselves. They can take a kid who plays a different position. You didn’t even play the position like and see where he can be, his position is in three years. And so many of those kids that they’ve done that have gone on to play in the NFL. I think Ang’s got that ability. So, I would sign off on it, man. Well, see, I’ll just McKay Williams just weigh in on this. He says this, “I’m taking that trade all day.” And then it’s got a gif of Cartman from South Park saying 100%. You’re damn right. Damn right. We’re using profanity now. Acceptable profanity. You know, I would have said durn. Oh, you’re darn right. Me and Dion, Jake Scott, Dion Sanders, Coach Prime. But yet, some of the Jazz fans are saying, “No, Mark Jones, that’s a hard pass for me. If you’re going to have a bad contract, give me the younger player.” Okay. Once again, PG probably doesn’t ever play here in Utah. Yeah. Ah, the women have spoken, Yavon and Jessica, and their both responses are the same word with two letters, N O. No. Now, no is a universal language across all, if not almost, no. That’s if you want to learn Spanish, start with the easy ones. C for yes and no for no, man. David, please know. He’s overrated, always hurt, and won’t stay. We’re not talking about Paul George, man. I’m not I’m not considering Paul George as the centerpiece of this deal. It’s the fifth pick for me. That’s the or the third pick. Now I got the third and the fifth pick. I don’t know that they’ve drafted anything that’s going to be a superstar, any player. But interestingly, the two pious picks the last two years haven’t done much. Now, Taylor Hendricks has a massive excuse reason because he suffered a severe injury in early in the season uh last year, right? And but then after that, George was a decent pick for where you got him. I mean, he shoots too much for my taste. Sensible ball still developing. Philipki, you got to consider a great pick. Second round pick. I don’t see how you can’t consider him anything but a great pick in there. you got flip is absolutely awesome. Yeah. Yeah. This this kid I’m intrigued by what he can do. I believe he can help you win ball games. I think he’s got a skill set and Collier is still in development stage. Yes, he’s got to get better in his shooting. No question about it. But, uh, for what he was asked to do on such a young team, pretty dog on good. So, I think you got to say what they’ve drafted is okay at minimum. It depends on how high you want to go. All right, we’ll hit that with Tim coming up. Hey, but we may have the Utah Peak. That piqued my interest. Yeah, we’ll see. We’ll get that. We got sound. Could they possibly come here a lot sooner than we think? Move over. Get out of town, Coyotes. You’re not the only one. Stay with us. We’ll get to that next. 975 the queso sport zone.

PK and Yawk examined if the Utah Jazz should engineer a trade with the Philadelphia 76ers that would send Lauri Markkanen to Philly in exchange for Paul George and the third overall selection in the NBA Draft.

  1. You don’t even think about that deal. Keep in mind what could’ve been the return for Lauri a year ago. We didn’t do it. If the argument is that he looked better a year ago, fine. You don’t sell low. Scouts are talented but there are zero guarantees ace bailey even pans out over Tre Johnson/VJ. Paul George is not going to really be tradable, so if we analyze the range of value comparisons of Lauri as an asset, we cannot in our right minds be more excited about the difference in upside between 2 guys (neither named cooper or dylan) than we would’ve been about the warriors previously offered care package. Lauri doesn’t even necessarily need to be part of the future, but in a world where deals come and go and all you can do is be ready, this is not appealing.
