I’m going to do it a lot more regularly here uh as we get into the off season. I normally would do the illiter illiterative thing and say mailbag Mondays, but I don’t like to say, okay, Mondays are always going to be mailbags because something could happen, a trade could happen, all that stuff. But just johncurales.combag johncales.combag to submit your questions. That’s the way I organize them. So, johncralis.combag to get your questions in. And I got a lot of questions here. Uh, later on we’ll talk about changes to salary structures and I I have an idea about that that’s tied to the awards. Uh, we’ll get to moving up in the draft. We’ll talk about Payton Pritchard and all sorts of trades. But I want to do a little something different because I do I do a weekly Q&A for the um subscribers on Boston Sports Journal. And I wanted to start with this right away for a number of different reasons, but the question that came in there, one of the questions was Aaron Nesmith looked amazing last night. Why did Boston give up on him so quickly? And I wanted to throw that in there because first of all, hilarious that the Knicks had a seemingly insurmountable lead in game one of the the the conference finals. They blew it. They went into overtime. They lost in overtime. Uh all of this talk that I’ve heard about Tom Thibido out coaching Joe Mazula and how he should have Joe Mazula should have done X Y and Z and then all of a sudden it turns around it and happens to the genius Tom Thibido. Uh it’s just funny to me that a lot of the criticisms that were levied on Joe Mazula turn around you levy them on Tom Thibido. He Tibs was like seen as well who look how great a coach he is. He out coached Joe Missoula and it turns around in that first game in the next series and all the same stuff happens to him which is just to say sometimes it happens right and it’s not a not really a commentary on the coach. Tom Thibido was the same coach he was in the Celtics series. He didn’t forget how to coach. Um so it’s just funny. It’s just funny to me to see as to the question of Aaron Nith. We all know that after two years here in Boston, he wasn’t getting the time. The Celtics were at a different stage. I think Aaron Nesmith has has been promoted to team captain right now of the uh all situation matters team. I say it all the time. Situation matters. You take a guy who uh sucks somewhere and he could be useful somewhere else. You take a guy who’s useful somewhere and he could be a star somewhere else. You saw it a couple years. We saw with Delano Banton when he went to uh Portland. You get some opportunity and you’re like, well, why couldn’t he do that here? Because everybody ahead of him was better than him here. Aaron Nesmith, same idea. Everybody ahead of him here was better than him here. And maybe maybe you can argue mayhe should have played uh but under Eay Udoka especially, you know, they were looking for defense and he was uh just an outofcrol wrecking ball on defense. We joked about how he every time he was out there defending. I gasped. There was at least one moment per game that he played where I gasped and I was like, “Oh my god, he might be he might be dead. he might be seriously hurt here and he’d get up and be fine, but I was like, “God, this guy is a lunatic.” And, you know, credit to him for playing hard, but he was out of control. And at that point, he shot like 27% that season. It wasn’t coming together for him. And the Celtics needed somebody that was more win now. So, they packaged Nith in a trade for Malcolm Brogden. Makes perfect sense. No one questioned it really at the time. It made Malcolm Brogden was the six man of the year. Now, he ended up getting hurt and that was part of why the Celtics lost that year. If he had been healthy, maybe it would have been a different story in the finals, but the the trade for Brogden made sense. And Nesmith got to go to a team that let him play, that let him figure it out, that let him shoot through some of the slumps. And now look at him. He’s he’s not like an all-star, but he played great. He hit what, five or six three-pointers in the fourth quarter. He completely willed the Pacers back to beat the Knicks and then Tyrese Hallebertton took over after that. It was great. It was beautiful and I’m so happy. I’m really happy for Neith. I love it when players, you know, find that situation that works and it and they thrive. I’m I really am legitimately like happy that the trade worked for him, that he’s in a place that uses him well, that he had the opportunity, the minutes, and that he’s now in a position to thrive, and he basically won Indiana playoff game. So, shout out to Aaron Nesmith. Very happy for him and all of that. All right, let’s move on. Matthew asks, uh, how involved will Joe and the rest of the coaching staff be in any decisions or team reconstruction or is this all Brad’s decision? Uh, so they the coaches are always involved and and Brad will take into account what Joe’s evaluation is of certain players. Joe will report to Brad this player I feel this we can do this with him we can do that with you know we can’t do that with him so on and so forth right so it’s like a a status report here’s uh what happens if we lose Drew Holiday what do you lose we lose X Y and Z and it’ll be honest it won’t be the stuff that he tells us it’ll be the honest you know coach to his boss something like, “Yeah, he might have lost the step or, you know, I don’t I don’t trust the shot like I used to.” Um, or something like that. I’m I’m just guessing. I’m just saying things as an example. And Brad will take that into account and say, “Okay, we’re we’ve got our ranking system. The coach has made his his decision. The coach has said blah blah blah. This is this is where I how I feel about the guy.” and you try to just deal with that information and you also explain to your coach, we’re going to have to move certain guys, so be aware. Um, it may be uh if it comes down to a choice of players, hey, we’re trading, we have two trades on the table for Holiday, would you prefer player X, player Y, and what do you think? And I think I think Joe would be up to speed as to like some of the talks. Maybe not blowby-blow. Hey, today I talked to, you know, Detroit and we said blah blah blah. No, it’s it Joe will be involved to a certain degree, but then Brad takes over. But he does have input and may have a vote on certain things, but there are bigger elements. And Joe is very cool with, hey, you okay, if that’s what you got to do, then give me my team. I will I will coach up my team and be done with it. So, he has a seat at the table, but not uh maybe not the deciding vote. Next question. Joe says, “My personal prediction is that any player with the last name that begins with H will not return on the roster next year. Can you talk about Sam Hower and what type of return he might be able to fetch on the market?” Okay, so H is Holiday, it’s Horford, and it’s Hower. Holiday. I’m good with Horford. I think will come back. Uh but that is dependent on Jason Tatum and his injury and and whether he’ll come back this upcoming season. But I’m still leaning Horford comes back. Hower interesting case here because I don’t think a Sam Hower trade will be what can he get in return. I think a Sam Hower trade will minimize what the Celtics need to attach to move the salary. Hower is going to be very tradable as if you listened to yesterday’s podcast with Keith Smith, which I highly recommend because we we we really get into the nitty-gritty of a lot of the trade stuff. Um it is listen, I understand some people might not have the stomach for it and or the wherewithal for it. Um, it can be very deep in the weeds of technical stuff, but we’re trying to explain to you the Celtic situation, so I recommend that. But the as far as it pertains to Sam Hower, Hower fits into the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, which I think is going to be like 14 million or so next year, maybe 15. uh which gives teams the opportunity to use that on Hower to you can now absorb a player via trade in that and also maybe you sign a guy instead of you you using your bianual exception which hard caps you I think at the first apron or second apron I I’ve lost track of that one but it does hard cap you in some way uh you don’t use your 4 million bianual you just use the rest of your midle and boom there you go and using your full mid-level hard caps you as well but Um, I think it hard caps you with the second apron, which I think most teams will be fine with. So, long story short, Sam Hower trade, I believe the greatest value to Boston, which is weird to say, but this is what the situation that they’re in. I think his greatest value to the Celtics is being trad tradable into exceptions across the league for nothing and maybe attach a second round pick which is minimal damage and you save a fair amount if I’ll just say if you trade Sam into the uh first you know if if that’s your first move you have I’ll just do the math right here. $10 million. We’ll round it. 5 million is taxed at $875. So right there, that 5 million, you’re saving $43.75 million in taxes just for that trade. And then the next 5 million is taxed at 825 and you’re saving $41.25 million. So that’s $85 million in taxes just by trading Sam Hower into cap space. If that’s your first move and that 10 million comes off the top, you’re saving $85 million in taxes. That’s your value. We’ll come back and talk about uh more trades. uh what happens to Payton Pritchard if Drew Holiday gets traded and uh what happens about uh salary structures and can guys restructure all that stuff? Lots of questions. It’s all coming up next. Today’s show is brought to you by FanDuel. Open up that FanDuel app and hop into these NBA playoffs. So go check it out uh wherever you get your podcast. Let’s return to the mailbag again. Those questions can come in at johncales.combag. Tim asks, “Is it crazy to think that Celtics could become a first apron team this year?” Uh then he proposes a single three-way trade. Makes me think so. Trade Jaylen to Atlanta, Porzingis to Toronto before the draft. Um it is Listen, I’m just going to say this. It’s not crazy to think anything nowadays. And I’m normally a person who will say, “Listen guys, we got to make sure we’re keeping it under control here.” And there will be certain scenario like you can’t just you know you gota be you got to be uh taking into account what the other team wants to do. So trade Jaylen to Atlanta sure uh Chris stops to Toronto maybe maybe that maybe they do that. What are they giving up? Got to take that into account here. But would the Celtics do that? It’s not out of the question. Really almost nothing is out of the question. So, make sure uh you’re you’re taking stuff into account, but I’m not going to sit here and poo poo uh a lot of these ideas. So, could the Celtics become a first apron team? Sure. Uh it’s possible that the Celtics could get completely under the tax and not be under any apron. So they they so much depends on um what Jason Tatum’s uh recovery is. What um what’s that timeline like? And can the Celtics depend on him to come back? Can do they think he’s going to come back or do they feel like making a big swing and like the biggest swing would be trading Jaylen Brown? If they feel like that’s the swing they want to make then they could make it now and try to try to duck all the way under everything. So it’s not out of the question. Will says do you think it would be a good move to trade Drew to let Pritchard take his starting spot? And what do you think happens with Cornett? Now, if they trade Holiday, it’s because it’s strictly because they are saving money. But yes, Payton Pritchard slides into the starting spot. I think he is the natural uh you know, he’s a natural to move up. Now, it depends. It does depend on how the rest of the summer shakes out. Who stays? Who goes? How do the Celtics decide to play? You could have a Derek White starting point guard, Jaylen Brown as the two, and then Tatum as the three with do you keep Porzingis, do you keep Al Horford? Do you keep Cornet? It’s possible they keep Cornette. Um, and you go, who do you acquire? Did you acquire a guy who can play power forward? Or did you acquire a guy who could play small forward? Then you might have uh White, Jaylen, player X, Jason, and your remaining center as your starters, and Pritchard continues to come off the bench. Uh maybe you do Pritchard White, Jaylen, Jason, and your center. So there is a world where Pritchard rises up to the starting spot. There is a world where he remains in the six-man spot. So, it depends a lot on what the Celtics do with the rest of their moves. They are going to have to acquire players. They are going to have to bring people back. So, how they do that, what players they bring back, the level to which those players are capable of either starting or coming off the bench determines some of this stuff. Luke Cornet, such a coin flip here cuz he loves it here. No doubt about it. He was just at the Worcester Red Sox game. So, he loves it around here. He’s comfortable around here. But if somebody gives him $10 million, that’s like congratulations, buddy. That’s kind of like a mini Evan Turner to Portland kind of move. Congratulations. Go enjoy that 10 million. If you do 10 million over two years, hey, maybe we’ll have you back after two years. I don’t know. But if if if he if I don’t think the Sel going to offer him more than a few million, uh they can offer him whatever they want. But uh the the money that he turns down, I I I wouldn’t recommend him turning down significant money. I mean, it’s it’s life-changing money for him, his family, his kids, you know, he just you have to you have to do the smart thing. So, it’s possible that he comes back. We’ll see how far under the Celtics get, but uh it it may it this may be the end for Cornet. Uh which would be a shame because I like him. Uh let’s let’s get into one more here from Chris. Was wondering what you think about all the Second Apron salary implications. Uh, looks like Brown and Tatum cashed in just in time with their paydays. Do you think the second apron will start to limit top player salaries and how will it affect trades? So, here’s my idea. In fact, I’ll tell you this. I’ll tease my answer and come back with it. I think the second apron, I don’t know if it will, but it should change how change the system for how players are rewarded for certain postseason awards. I’ll talk about that when I come back. Thanks for making Lockdown Celtics your first listen every day. Thank you and go make your second listen. The locked on NBA big board show NBA draft expert Raphael Barlo react reacts to every workout interview. I can speak and rumor leading up to the NBA draft. Find locked on NBA bigboard on YouTube or wherever you listen to podcasts. So, the question before the break was, how does the second apron affect player paydays and top player salaries and how will it affect trades? So, I think I think there’s they do want to temper some of the top salaries and I think it’s twofold. a guy like Jaylen Brown getting the super max. I don’t think that can happen for much longer. Uh Jason Tatum, your top player, can get the supermax. Jaylen, your second best player, I don’t think he can get the super max. I don’t think any like if if you’re just ranking them, you just I I don’t think you can go that far. And I think this is part of the goal of the CBA is to limit some of those top salaries. If if a team wants to keep a guy, they’re they’re going to have to like work on work on these salaries with them. Um you can you can work in some incentives be like, “Listen, you’re not going to get 35% of the cap. we’re going to give you 30% of the cap, but if you make an AllNBA team, another AllNBA team, then we’ll give you the 35 or something like that. Like, you’ve got to work in more incentives into player contracts. So, if take let’s just take Jaylen for example, you don’t just give him the 35%. You say it’s 30% and you have a chance to earn the extra five by doing one of the following. uh you make a sec you make you make an allNBA team again make it make another one uh or make uh you know make a second team or a first team uh or you you know whatever maybe maybe it is the finals MVP maybe Jaylen would have earned it anyway but make it an incentive versus just handing it to him. Uh I think you just you just have to you just have to start structuring these deals differently. If these aprons are there and building a team is going to be prohibitive prohibitive, then I don’t think you just hand out these these these salaries. Which brings me to I think maybe they just need to change the structure. Like a guy making uh an all defensive team or a third team allNBA. Third team AllNBA shouldn’t qualify you for a super max anymore. Like you got to be first team or second team. Uh you can’t make you gota be you know um I mean an MVP can do it right. Um defensive player of the year maybe but like a defensive player of the year and something else or you gota you got to up the stakes is my point. You got to up the you got to raise the bar and not just be like well third team all NBA. And I’m not saying like that’s nothing, but consider you’ve now put the 65 game rule in, so guys are getting eliminated left and right. Third team is a little easier to make. Third team is, you know, a couple of guys get hurt and now you’re 20th best player in the league, your 22nd best player in the league. Well, if there’s a a run of injuries that person sneaks into an AllNBA, you’re like, “Oh, well, okay. So, Supermax, well, I think the 20th 20th best player in the league is amazing, but not 35% of the cap amazing. Same as your top five players.” There’s got to be There’s got to be something. There’s got to be a You got to change that system because how does it affect trades? It just makes them harder. It’s harder to trade these guys. So, they need to change how these guys are rewarded for certain things and put it in line with the other rules that have been instituted since the 65game rule came after the the system for how guys were rewarded for making these teams. And the players would fight this tooth and nail and they should. I’m a union guy. If I was in the union hearing me talk, I’d be like, “No, you can’t do that. that can’t take away our guys’ ability to earn money. But from a team building perspective, this is I think this is something that both sides need to like sit there and talk about because or you come up with some other plan or something where teams at the top can realize like a little bit of relief, but that’s not what the league wants. That’s not what the league wants. Uh Dylan and Dan have similar questions about the draft. Dylan says, “I’m sure you’ll go over this at some point, but is it possible for the Celtics to make a trade to the Spurs or the Mavs for a package involving Jaylen Brown for one of the two top picks um saying that the Mavs roster is older, maybe they’re a more win now team?” Dan says, “Is there any possibility or benefit to trading up in the draft? Could they do something like packaging their two lower picks and some combo of Drew KP and Hower for a top 10 pick?” So, Dan, no. That’s I wouldn’t say that that’s how it’s worked. You know, you don’t go into the top 10 with 28 and 32 and Holiday and Porzingis and Hower uh to get a top 10. That’s not that’s not something that I think would work. Um so bottom line, quick answer is I don’t see them moving up in the draft. The Spurs maybe. And I say maybe like because I don’t think it’s 0% but it’s close. The Mavs I was joking and I I I can see some just because they traded Luca and got to this point. I can see Nico Harrison doing something crazy. But I uh I don’t think I don’t think and everybody that I I’ve heard is like no Mavs are taking that pick. They’re not gonna they’re not gonna trade Luca and pass on Cooper flag. Like that’s just not how it’s gonna go. So I don’t think I don’t think Jaylen Brown to the Spurs for the second pick is going to happen, but you make the call maybe. Um I don’t think that’s going to happen. I I don’t think the Celtics move up in the draft. I don’t think it’s possible. I don’t think it’s feasible. Uh which is also saying the same thing is possible. I don’t think I don’t think so. Uh, Elias or it’s a Greek name, Elias, I was thinking about uh the situation with the luxury tax and wondering if an NBA player can redo their contract to lower the cap hit uh like the NFL. No, you cannot. There is one instance of uh renegotiating and extending uh in certain circumstances. You can renegotiate the final year of a deal and extend off of that. that is generally done the opposite way to increase somebody’s salary and then add an extension. You know, uh let’s just say Derek White was making a lot less and you say, “Okay, we’re going to renegotiate the final year. We’re going to give you an extension off of that.” You can do that. There’s there’s no going to Jason or Jaylen being like, “Okay, let’s let’s let’s cut your cap hit down to 40 million a piece uh instead of 56 million. That will get us under the second apron. we get to keep everybody, but we’re going to backload or give you another guaranteed year and bonuses and blah blah blah blah blah. You cannot do that. So, Celtics uh NBA contracts are guaranteed uh unless otherwise noted uh with certain non-G guarantees, but the once you sign a guaranteed deal, that’s the deal. That’s it. With rare exception. Kristoff says asks, is it possible to get injured player exception for Tatum next season? think only if he misses the entire season. So, um and and the problem is that still counts against the tax, still counts against the cap. So, you you might be able to if the Celtics determine that Tatum will not return that season, the doctors agree and he will miss the entire season because of that. they can apply and they may apply and they I think if he’s ruled out for the season, the Celtics will apply for an exception to have it in their back pocket just in case and they’ll see how the season goes. And if at the deadline they need to acquire somebody using that or sign a free agent, a buyout guy using that, they can do that. Uh, but that’s it. It’s it’s it’s probably not going to happen if he’s coming back at all next year. You have to be gone for the rest of the season. Sophie, we’ll wrap it up with Sophie. Uh, I think we’ll see more playing time for some of the bench guys. Who do you think will most likely be able to earn more rotation minutes and develop into a key player off the bench? think the obvious choice is Baylor Shyman who has uh you know he he really progressed nicely over the course of the year. He had some nice moments. He’s got good size, good passing ability. Obviously knocking down some shots was very important and getting him that confidence. Uh not that he ever lacked the confidence, but every rookie faces a crisis of confidence at some point. So, I feel like he’s the guy that you can you can look at and be like, “Okay, Shyman.” In fact, I think you’re kind of counting on that. Whatever you get for Holiday, I think ultimately the perfect scenario would be Shyman steps into the Sam Hower role. Whoever the Celtics acquire for Holiday at worst slides into the Shyman role and maybe a better version of the Shyman role or like a second Hower role or something like that. But if Shyman can step into the Sam Hower spot and that kind of spot becomes like a wild card, maybe it’s a big, maybe it’s a a different kind of player, maybe it’s a guard. uh that that kind of that would allow the Celtics a lot of flexibility. So, Shyman’s my guy. Uh and then uh I don’t I don’t see much else like I don’t know if Drew Peterson like Drew Peterson might be able to compete for a spot. Uh he was a two-way player so he might be able to compete for a a guaranteed spot. Um I don’t know about JD Davidson. I think he’s I don’t still I don’t know. I don’t know. We’ll see how Davidson comes back. Maybe maybe Davidson surprises. Uh I’m not going to rule him out, but I’m not hopeful with him. I say Shyman’s the guy. Once again, questions can come in. johncurales.comag. johncorales.comag. That’s how you get your questions in. These podcasts will be much more regular during the offseason here. When the knicks lose, everybody wins
Trade Jaylen Brown!!
I hate to say it but because of tatums injury I think we should trade brown while his value is highest.
Just don't trade White and PP. And Al if he doesn't retire.
Trade Brown Holiday KP
For everybody saying trade brown ?? What would you trade him for ?? It’s so easy to say trade this guy or that guy but you don’t just trade somebody to trade them especially a guy like Jaylen brown that’s just a fact. There is legit only a handful if that of trades that make actual sense with brown and teams that would want him. Brad ain’t going to just trade him for nothing you need to get back at least 3 picks good ones and two young potential all star type players or a top 5-10 pick in this years draft. Brown is way too good and valuable to just trade him bc that’s dumb. I would only do it for a haul like for example. To Houston for smith or Thompson or maybe Eason smith and multiple picks and throw in van fleet too. Thats that or maybe a Jaren Jackson junior and Desmond bane and picks not just trade brown for picks that you hope get good players haha that’s what ppl don’t understand they say oh trade brown trade brown well for what ????

Nesmith is a good player but it didn’t work in Boston and that’s that it all worked out for both teams. We got holiday in the end and got a title also pacers got him it all worked out that simple
Trade Jaylen brown, porzingis and jrue
Que the trade brown gang smh
I miss the C’s…playoffs aren’t the same without them 😢
Trade JB, KP & Holliday!!!!!!!!!!
Yep guys. I love jaylen, but trade him now. It's impossible to build a roster with 2 supermax guys. Thinking we could get a haul from Orlando, Houston, Atlanta or San Antonio. Everything depends on where Giannis lands.
Im still hoping Nico is dumb enough to trade the #1 pick.

Recognize the city of champs 😢😢😢
Really happy for Nesmith. Found the right team for him and was rewarded for his hard work.

No jaylen trade please. Let holiday, hauser, and porzingis go.
Thanks John ☘️
Aaron Nesmith, is too good a player for Pacers, bad decisions by Boston, for trading him, would have been an asset for his incredible 3 point shooting.
What does the 1 billion dollar investment mean for the team in the coming seasons? Is that part of the sale or can that be used for the luxury tax?
Sam Hauser is not a reliable, 3 point shooter, missed a lot of threes in the playoffs against the Knicks, Sam, KP, Jrue and Al should retire, and be traded.
Derrick White for Jaden Mcdaniels and Divencenzo
Cant complain about Nesmith when Sam Hausers been 40% from 3pt every year….yes, Nesmith is the better player…but we got the chip
Amen Thompson already made an All NBA defensive team…only 22 yrs old…Jaylen Browns never done that….
No idea who’s going to be here come training camp. I’d like to see White, Horford if he decides to play another year, Brown & Holliday. I know I’m not in the majority on Jrue but he’s such a good defender and came through offensively during some rough times for our go to scorers last season. Hate this time of year. Everyone is a GM with a degree in finance all of the sudden😂 (including me sometimes 🤷🏻♂️)
Thanks John ☘️🔒
Let Brown put up massive numbers without Tatum, then move him
Hate watching/listening offseason talks in May.
You can't trade Jalen for draft picks again alot of these young players don't even make it in the NBA or go in the G league noway draft picks for a super star like Jalen unless he asks for a trade he got his money he's under contract i hope he's happy in Boston
Not surprised that Nesmith did so well in Indiana. Guy literally invented basketball after all.
NBA awards are a popularity contest..
Not a Mazzulla fan, and would like to see Cassell elevated to HC, or Mike Malone get it(since he's available). I know it won't happen though, since he's Brad's 'guy', but, him not only losing Game 1, but Game 2, with virtually no adjustments, and that 14 second Tatum dribble, dribble, dribble in Game 2, and not even getting off a shot was inexcusable.. A lot of coaches would've been fired(and rightfully so) after that. Tatum is terrible in these situations. Why not either White, Brown, or Pritchard as a last shot option(more ball movement would help like The Pacers do).
Been thinking a lot about yesterday's pod. It seems to me that the easiest and best way to move forward is just to trade Holiday for draft picks or a minimum player. That puts them under the 2nd apron and leaces them with a good team
The idea that Brown is an elite player to build around is not accurate. He’s a good player with severe limitations, not deserving of a max contract. His plus/minus ranking is 34 in the NBA. His overrated defensive rating is 109. That is low level average. 95 and below is elite. His FG % on game winning or tying shots in the last minute of the game is 37% for 2s and 22% for 3s. Trade him while he still has perceived value. Some of the trade ideas involving the Rockets or Spurs are no brainers.
